The Giants of Jazz are: Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Kai Winding, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, with Al McKibbon on bass gave a live performance on the Newport Jazz Festival October 31, 1971 in De Doelen Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
This is the second piece 'Round Midnight'.
Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917- February 17, 1982) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight, No Chaser", "Ruby, My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Well, You Needn't". Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
Monk's compositions and improvisations feature dissonances and angular melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations.
Monk was renowned for a distinct look which included suits, hats, and sunglasses. He was also noted for an idiosyncratic habit during performances: while other musicians continued playing, Monk would stop, stand up, and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano.
Monk is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time magazine (the others being Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and Wynton Marsalis).

Thelonius Monk looked so humble and shy ☺️ 🙈 what an extraordinary human being and musician music 🎶 🎵 🎼

I've never seen Monk look self-conscious, even modest and humble. Very touching human moment--esp. on a tour during which Monk and Blakey were reportedly at complete odds. He also takes a beautiful solo on his most famous composition "Round Midnight" (interrupted by the jazz piano ad).

Dizzy's intro to this tune was very heartfelt and touching to me.Particularly so since it is clear from the closeups of Monk during that intro that Monk was very near to the end of his playing days.

DE DOELEN's Newport Jazz Festival was first held in 1966. In the explanation of this video for the 7th time, it is 1971, but isn't it 1972? DE DOELEN's poster also participates in this member in 1972. Has anyone investigated?

Peace. Ladies and gentlemen, there has been, to my knowledge, no one who’s been a bigger contributor to our music than our very exciting pianist, Mr. Thelonious Monk. [applause] He has served you in several different capacities, including…he’s a top instrumentalist. A great composer, arranger, leader. Bon vivant…and a doll. [Dizzy banters with bandmates] We’re going to play one of his compositions now that has become a standard amongst jazz musicians all around the world, and it’s called “Round Midnight”.

Terrible recording of jazz legends playing an iconic song. Dizzy’s solo is completely lost in this recording as well as much of Stitt’s complementary licks. A flawed recording and a shameful representation of the music.
