I have seen some lukewarm reviews of this album but I have personally always really enjoyed it. As you say, it is a fine sounding recording as well. Cheers
Monk is my favorite jazz musician and I've written about him many times. Monk's playing on this album is very strong but it is not a successful album overall. Essentially Monk and Mulligan hear music differently and don't really jell together. If you want to hear Monk with horns, Brilliant Corners, Monk's Music and 5 By Monk By 5 are much better choices. And of course his compilation album with Trane.
