Them | Episode 9 | Covenant II | Amazon Prime | RECAP 

In the beginning of the episode Epps loses his boy and family, he is seen praying to God and asks God to show him how to shake the foundations of the earth. He is in grief and his anguish shows he is battling with his faith. Notice how the young boy then all of a sudden shows up in the bushes and he takes comfort in him. The young boy also shows Epps the scripture in the Bible in which they talk about slavery and Epps decides that this is God’s way of showing him that his new guests are to be their property. He starts to have Pride as a sin as he’s seen as an elder in the community. Also when they blind Nona and her husband she starts yelling that she doesn’t know how the Bible doesn’t burst into flames for him being so evil. The camera points to the young boy and he smiles and the Bible then literally burst into flames. That’s when I started to believe that this is not a child, but a devil or demon taking on the form of a child to lure Epps into wickedness. I believe the demon child set the Bible into flames and then the villagers started attacking her believing she was doing black magic which adds more fuel and hate to the fire. All of this is supernatural because they set the couple on fire and then the whole village even outside buildings from their community burn leaving only Epps and the child alive. The demon child takes Epps down to the basement where he then shows his true self. He starts shape shifting into different people as he’s telling Epps you asked to shake the earths foundation and He (God) never answered but I did. Epps realizes he made a deal with the devil and the child is indeed not a child at all but a demonic entity. He tells Epps to always make a hell for black people or else a Hell will be made for him. He later shakes on it and the child’s hand is now the hand of a old wretched woman. Epps is then killed and the boy disappears but now Epps soul is condemned to haunting black people who move into the community and making a literal hell for them as the Man in the black hat.

No one in the village ever recognized, reacted to, or even mentioned the boy. He is not even with them while they eat together. He just lurks around at times and talks to no one but Epps. When the couple first meet Epps and he calls to Miles they have a confused "is this man crazy" look on their faces. However, they ultimately decide to go with Epps because they have no other choice. They likely think he has some slight dementia. When Miles hands Epps the bible everyone around them is looking away and no one sees that happen. All the scenes that we see Miles and Epps in together, Epps is actually by himself looking crazy. The townspeople probably think he is talking to god, since he has a reputation for doing that. You can see so many hints early on, if you pay close attention.

And thats why they house is the only one that has the basement

Great show, but so hard to watch. It makes me so damn angry.

Maybe he wasn’t a prophet and was suffering from schizophrenia, but to the rest of the village people they thought he was talking to God and so called him a prophet o.O

this episode and episode 5 were the most disturbing episodes of the series in my opinion.

This episode was 🔥 finally got to see who the man in the black hat is! Oh, a that lil boy definitely represent the devil..it all tied in.. It clicked why Luck nem’ house the only house that has a basement..😱All the face changes at the end freak me out 🤨😨 it’s taking me to fast lol 😆 Great Recap per usual 💯💯

I honestly skipped this episode Black hat dude talk too slow and i sped up to almost halfway to see it's a blk hat dude episode. IDC bout his memories What about the emery fam ? Lol

The show is showing us where we come from, our history but at the end shows us to take back our power which we already have. Well at least that is what I got from the show.

Any religion or cult that puts a man superior or above others is always false the only way we talk to God is through prayer not one man that's puts his pants one leg at a time like every one else..thats the whole reason Jesus died so that we can have our sins forgiven and approach got to prayer ..and epps is going by the bible written under the mosaic law..wen jesus died for we were under a new law covenant so sacrifices and all that is done away with..so that scripture of owner slaves is no longer appropriate

This is what comes from following the rules instead of thinking for yourself and doing what you know is right.

Ngl, that ending with Epps and Miles creeped me the *hell* out. That was probably worse for me than the uncomfortable red hot poker scene and it's subsequent aftermath. It's been a minute since anything horror related had that effect on Tha Kid™. Well done _Covenant II_
