The story of Big and Little Edie is one of the most paradoxically sad and inspirational stories ever. I’m so glad Grey Gardens has been returned to its former glory. I love that most of the furniture is original to the house.
@Jim Elliott Not nice and just your opinion, she did a beautiful thing by using the old furnishings and the house looks cozy and not overdone...perfect IMO
Steven Torrey right? I'd love these tours to be about the structure and not the person doing them. How about the kitchen? Bathrooms, hallways? Perhaps there's a better video somewhere.
The money that must have went into this old historic estate home to put in new walls, plaster and ceiling work, attic and basement work, new flooring, probably new sub=flooring just to eliminate cat/animal smells and years of neglect must have been incredible. I've watched the documentary and am happy that this unique home's history has been preserved and improved.
This woman totally gets it... seagrass mats, chintz, wicker chairs and aqua painted trim and cedar shakes. Original, classic wasp summerhouse style at its best. Gorgeous!!
@@AL-pk4ij I'm glad I'm not the only one who still knows the difference! WASP= White Anglo Saxon PRODISTANT. Catholic is NOT prodistant. (But I get why ppl would think it's all the same. Rich white ppl is rich white ppl. Lol.)
@@anneblubaugh58 220k in 1979 is equivalent to 900k in 2022. By the looks of it she put in over a couple million in renovations and upkeep over the years. Still a good long term investment especially since she still is the owner after 40 years. As the saying goes though, you gotta spend money to make money
Sally Quinn is the widow of Ben Bradlee, editor of the Washington post during watergate. FYI. He was the boss of Woodward and Bernstein, and encouraged and supported them in their investigative reporting that helped end Nixon’s presidency.
I was going to say that Sally Quinn is a Saint for undertaking a renovation of that magnitude, but she has already been called an Angel. May this video give her the recognition she deserves.
Stephen Golden She really is. And quite the visionary too! To walk into that house and see all the decay and literally smell it??? I would have turned around and walked right back out but Sally and her husband Ben knew something great when they saw it!
I think you should research sally Quinn. I believe she talks about practicing witchcraft and putting curses on people she wanted gone in her autobiography. She stopped only after her brother asked her to after she had a child with mental difficulties. Not the saint or angel you describe. Married to Ben Bradley.
The woman "Lois" she mentioned is Lois Wright, a long-time friend of the Beale's, who appears in the Grey Gardens documentary as one of the birthday guests. She actually lived with them at Grey Gardens for a year in the mid-1970's, and wrote a book about her experiences. She's reputed to be a famous artist and palmist, also having a long-running radio show.
@@rachelmckee8980 I feel like a lot of the criticism of him that seems to be on here is just thinly veiled homophobia...He didn't seem at all wrong to host this segment to me. Lots of enthusiasm for a very sensitive revivification of the property. What's so wrong with that?
You have to love the Hamptons and those who live there no matter how rich and crazy they are. I love the story of Gray Gardens and this part of its new life is wonderful. Well done!!
Imagine what the already finished neighboring houses were worth. Bet she got that house for a steal. That and the neighbors probably took a collection to assist with the exteriors and landscaping… fixing it certainly helped their bottom lines as well.
I am sure it was expensive. It is typically more costly to upgrade/restore/repair as opposed to a new build. It was structural, electric, plumbing, HVAC, roof etc etc.
I think we had all of the same wicker furniture in our house! I had that exact rug in my room. What a trip! How could they live in filth though? Why not clean & tidy up? I don’t understand how people could live in shit & piss & not be horrified & sick? 😬🚽🤯💩😸
@@staceylili6703 Don't be so unkind. Instead, look into the facts and circumstances that besieged them before you make a judgement. A little compassion is a fine virtue.
The garden is lovely! The house is fixed up very nice..I love the staircase when you walk into the front hall..They did a really beautiful job on that house..Before it was a disaster!
What a brave and wonderful woman to take on what must have seemed an impossible task to make that house something beautiful again. A fantastic job and it looks remarkable.
What the hell good is a beach house if you can’t just plop down and put your feet up? This poor house has been turned into just another hamptons show place.
I hope all the cats found homes... but I just love that it is fully restored and looking better than ever. The Edies were such classic characters. Bless their souls.
I remember hearing little edie agreed and let animal rescues take them, all but maybe four and she kept them until they died, when she finally moved and left Grey Gardens I remember reading she took one cat with her. I wish I knew what happened to the ones that were taken away, I never heard that they were put down
I was hoping the all of cats were rescued and given loving, forever families after they were no longer going to live at Grey Gardens. The poor, sweet, furry loves after they lost their own family, the Edie's. 😻😿
Bless too this Earth Angel, she purchased this wreck knowing she would not gut & destroy the beauty within. When we r gifted with the mean$ we do wildly wonderful things. Big & little Edie can RIP🤘
It’s just so wonderful that Sally bought GREY GARDENS from Little Edie Beale and just turned it into the beauty of an estate that it once was. After all the home went through Racoons and over 32 cats roaming around doing their business everywhere. There business is very pungent!! The Beales really let the place go badly they were both very eccentric Big Edie and Little Edie. I saw the Grey Gardens doc from the 70’s as well as the 2009 docudrama that Drew Barrymore starred as Litle Edie for HBO. She was excellent as Edie. The house was so beautiful and Sally made it stunning again. This is so wonderful.
first of all.. the lady who owns the house was suffering from a bad case of cottonmouth. The sounds coming from her mouth were less than pleasant. Second of all.. It's a shame that nobody helped the Edies restore it while they were living there. Somebody should have restored it and given them a lifetime stay. This is bitter sweet.
I hate that he called it shabby... that word dont describe Grey Gardens now. Maybe when the Beales lived there. It's an amazing part of Hamptons history I hope it will always stand.
Sally Quinn without any fanfare. Yes, she and her husband Ben Bradlee would have the means and sensibility to restore this home in such a way. Amazing 👏
Who wouldn't want to recline in front of the fireplace? Me, for one. One spark comes flying out of that fireplace, lands on your sheets, while your asleep: It's over mate.
Oh, I love it. Just the gardens would be enough to make me buy it, not to mention the house and the nearby access to the ocean...well, based on a scene in documentary lol
Beautiful restoration of the grande old dame that is Grey Gardens. Kudos to Sally Quinn and team. Loved the story of the message given from spirit. Hoping for many years of love, warmth, and friendship to the new occupants.
Such a beautiful and wonderful soul she was Destiny to have gray garden and little Edie & big Edie are very proud of her too for making gray garden come back to life once’s again ❤️👌👍👏
Really very beautiful recovery Just remarkable detail very well and Apropos furnished. The story is Lovely and very respectful of Grey Gardens History. Love From F..H.S. (Joe) Savannah GA.
I don't mean this to be insensitive or insulting; and I don't make comments about the wealthy/ultra rich and their money; but I am impressed that she had the privilege and probable exorbitant amount of money it took to restore this beautiful old estate to its original glory!
Old souls that have passed on quite often visit their homes. God only knows the people in my Moms old mansion built in 1918 come and go. We are all just simply guests.
