Kathmandu is dusty, dirty and very loud. Power cuts are a daily problem and Internet connectivity is patchy. But in Nepal’s biggest university at the heart of the city, one ambitious scientist has been trying to boost the country’s physics research. Thanks to his efforts, and with support from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Narayan Adhikari’s students are now producing a steady stream of high-level papers, published in the world’s most prestigious journals.

In Nepal we need more professor like him to enhance the quality of physics.

And here i am complaining about having to buy my own physics books, when i get free, top notch education in one of the worlds top 10 technical universities...

***** Dude, relax. The only reason i am complaining is because i'm a dirt poor student :P Besides, there is nothing wrong with incorporating socialist elements into the government. The fact that all education and healthcare is paid through taxes is a godsend for a lot of people. I myself am coming from relatively good conditions, but the fact that everyone gets equal treating, on the behalf of higher taxes, isn't a problem at all. It's not without reason that Denmark is rated the happiest country in the world, several years in a row, despite having the largest income taxation in the world. Social security really is unmatched, when it comes to median welfare, and i am happy to comply. Money isn't everything you know. And besides, i'm studying for my masters in Electrical Engineering at the moment, so i'm probably not gonna worry about unemployment any time soon.

I like how he invites students to his house to discuss physics and eat dinner. Lol.

One of the reasons why research in natural science or in any other field is very poorly funded in Nepal is because we focus so much on publishing paper on 'recognized international journal' than focus on solving problem. We are so much focused on doing our masters or PhD and then working on aboard. If the authority at the university level change this mind set and do actual research for solving problems around the country then I strongly believe that we can generate funds from within the country for research. If we solve the problem for the government then there will be a strong motivation for government to fund the research. Instead of blaming we should start changing the purpose of education in our country.

well the massive budget constraints make it harder to for the Universities and the Government to invest their resources to do actual problem solving , there is a reason why Germany , USA , UK have more success in conducting science experiments than countries like Nepal, Bangladesh , Vietnam etc we just lack the resources.

he used to teach biophysics during my undergraduate at White House institute of Science and Technology (WHIST) now called as Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM). His lecture on structural biology was outstanding. He gave us knowledge about structures of different biomolecules like proteins, nucleic acid and carbohydrates. Wow its good to see him after such a long time. Yes, politics and power cuts are massive problem in our country.

Every high school graduate (or drop out) should be drafted to spend a year in some kind of service to the country or the human race. Once you have a very basic school and teachers, motivation is more important than money. American youth who have a free public education but disrupt their classes and disrespect their teachers and drop out should trade places with the millions of young people around the world who would trade places with them in a heart beat. Spend a few months in Haiti carrying water and gathering firewood and you might appreciate what you have here.

in my opinion lack of resources help so many scientist and student to get creative and invent low budget gadgets for experimenting. i hope they keep working and more investment should go to them internationally. in this day and age science is no longer confined to 1 place, we are all connected through the internet to collapse

indeed, all great things have humble beginnings... As far as Nepal is concerned, it is difficult for governments in poor countries to invest in basic sciences as they don't find any immediate profitable results in them beyond Academics. Physics is even more challenging at research level because it lacks industrial support. Subjects like Microbiology, Chemistry can still have funding or backing from the industries but in the case of Physics, it is not like that...

Why is there no girls in the school :(
@mhadiscientia
@mhadiscientia 7 лет назад
In developing countries, girls tend to take courses related to biological sciences or medical sciences. Lack of Women scientists or enrollment of girls in STEM courses is a problem in developed countries as well. This is no basic course, the class was of Masters in Physics so may be very few or no girls opted for that course.
@prqpelx
@prqpelx 7 лет назад
because in Nepal most of the girls choose biology as their basic subject and there are maximum boys to choose the physics.
