I was just telling my 11 year old son this today. I was slamming them today and he wasnt catching much. I told him if you wanna catch fish you gotta put your lure where the fish are at and that might mean you get hung up. Eventually he got tired of watching me catch fish and he put his bait where it needed to be and caught fish. Only got hung up once but got it back. Just found your videos tonight. Keep up the good work, and thanks for the info

Man, this is awesome. Really struck a chord with me, I feel like I pussy foot around with certain baits trying not to lose them causing me not to catch fish. I'm gonna keep all this in mind while fishing next time.

Looking at some old videos and found this one, this is the best advice I’ve heard in a long time. None of us want to lose our prized baits but that’s what they’re for. Clearly, ALL baits catch more fishermen than fish and I love my lures and don’t want to lose them. But my chewed up ones have such a special place...like you said...some of those do get retired. One way to solve this is to always buy two if you can and put one away. Then you always know you have at least one backup. I know...Easier said than done, especially w the super high end ones. Great video, great advice!!! I’m going to remember this, and “consider it a blessing” each time it comes back to the boat!! Perfectly said Bro!! Thanks!!! Pat

I heard something along the same lines as this from another Swim Baiter that like you said opened my eyes to catching more fish , he said treat the really expensive Swim Baits like you would a 20 $ Swim Bait. Good stuff Mike.

Thank you!!! New to chucking big baits, had been thinking along the same lines but wasn't comfortable with it, foul hooked a crocodile the other month with my fav deep diving hard body, thought I'd just snagged the bottom, but when I got the bib back it came from 80 feet to the left of the troll run...lure retrievers are worth there weight in gold, normally use a pole type, works well chasing Barra..thanks for the tips 👍

bob smith I think hes talking more about when the bass eats it and then snaps off because it was in an area that most wouldn't throw in to because of that. I've learned to worry about that after I get the bite.

This is the way I fish most of the time. Yes loosing an expensive bait is never easy but throwing it in the most snaggiest place is most likely gonna get you bit. Still need to put this method of fishing to my hard baits.

This is a very interesting way to think about lures. Seems to me I catch more fish on certain jigs and lures (that I am not scared to lose) than ones I am ultra careful with. Have caught tons on the Nichols Finesse Flippin jigs because they are only $3.5 and I guess I fish them with less worry (at least maybe subconsciously because I don't realize it with others). Same goes for cheaper cranks I am willing to fish more aggressively.

Good advice Mike. No coincidence you first two baits are weedless! I learned this lesson a few years back. I had to adapt my "system" of rod power and line type to compliment fishing solely the 8" weedless Hudd instead of the exposed hook models. I found that going up one rod power, and using braid to a leader (copoly or mono), along with giving the fish a 2-count to fully swallow the lure was the formula for extremely high hookup ratios when running the truly big weedless baits. Just like you said, I too found that putting that super real looking, truly large bait, right into the thick of places was the x-factor. Also, as you state....its gotta be soft baits. Because this particular philosophy is for targeting fish in or next to serious cover, the 'drawing' power of many of the big glides is negated. These fish fall into the ambush classification vs their 'cover water and flush'em out peers' (drawing from John Hope's research in Trackin Trophies).

Good point. I realized this first with jigs. If I'm not getting hung up & losing some then why fish them bc they're not in the right place if I don't have to focus on working that bait out. After I learned that with a jig I started applying that to cranks and all other baits. I throw a glide bait in a place full of coontail and laydowns. People look at me crazy when they see what I catch fish on. Lol
@MakinHicks
@MakinHicks 5 лет назад
Nick Cavazos amen. I was basically gonna make the same comment. Your gonna be more conservative with say a 100$ swimbait, but don’t be afraid to throw a jig into anything.

What I've learned from doing it like this is to throw the cheapest in the areas most wouldn't. If I lose that then no biggie. But if I get a bite then the next time I know it's worth it to throw in to that area again.

It's so true about not worrying about losing a bait...there's one thing to throwing a bait in a tree which is a newb move and a totally other thing to snagging a bait where you can't retrieve it...I've been afraid to lose a bait in the past and it kept me from fishing it correctly...so true dude...well said
@SacredGter
@SacredGter 5 лет назад
This has been the first thing people tell the new comers to the big swim bait world. And being that most start from the banks we already know this going into it. We can't see where we throw it. It could look clear as glass and still get hung up or lose the lure and the fish because of that. But I dont think it has helped me get anything that a guy that was more cautious about where he throws these big lures.
