Fun fact: the composer actually put microphones inside a piano to record the vibrations and clicks that people don't usually hear to capture the idea of the vibrations of music that a deaf people would usually feel
@Animalace3
@Animalace3 2 года назад
How so inside of the piano? When recording piano, specifically grand pianos, the piano is almost always opened up and mics are put in very close to the strings (several inches above the strings). Well, I should specify that this method was used because at the time we were recording a big jazz band and the mics needed to be close up to not catch any bleed-over sound from other instruments. This specifically is done to capture just the sound of the piano, and not the sound of the room itself, other instruments, or really any other noise. As for actually recording a grand piano: Typically two mics are used, one to capture all of the bass notes and one to capture the high notes, though this is more for when you want the sound of the piano alone. Another way to record a piano is to keep the mics a good distance both up and away from the piano (1 meter or so) so you can capture both the sound of the piano itself and the natural acoustics of the room the piano is in. I should also say that it's not uncommon to use 4 microphones, to get both sounds of what I just described. 2 inside the piano to get the piano sound themselves, and 2 mics outside of the piano to pick up the room itself (and the reverberations of the piano itself playing through the room). Honestly, there's 101+ ways to mic a piano. And all that really changes is what it sounds like (even if only very slightly). So I'm curious as to how it was recorded since whenever I've recorded grand pianos, I've yet to mic one so the vibrations of the hammers striking the strings of a piano are heard moreso than the tones produced by the strikes themselves. P.S. For those unaware of how pianos make sound, the most basic explanation is that hammers are striking different length metal (usually metal) strings to make different tones. The shorter the string, the higher the pitch.

This is from an interview: "First, I did some research on hearing impairments. I found out that the types and degrees of them vary depending on individuals, and so I didn’t take deafness as a concept. Instead, I focused on a hearing aid, which plays an important role in the film. A hearing aid is basically an amplifier for your ear, so theoretically, it should create some noise. Then, I began to think how much noise to pick up, what sort of difference we hear between noise and musical tones and what makes noise become meaningful. All those thoughts led me to one conclusion, an upright piano. The fact that my parents were holding music lessons at home might have helped me, but upright pianos clearly stood out as an instrument that I could control the noise as much as possible. Upright pianos could produce noises from nails clicking on keys, a hammer clunking by pressing keys, a felt part on a soft pedal when it’s pressed down and a soundboard creaking as strings echo. In order to complete the concept of recording all those noises, I dismantled a piano and set up a microphone inside. By doing so, I was hoping to capture and record the sound as a whole including such noises, not musical tones."

The school also threw a girl with a disability into a class with no support and then asks a bunch of elementary school kids to be her aide. While it is nice that one of them volunteers to learn sign language, the fact that there is not an interpreter or aide or anything means Shoko was stuck at the whims of her peers. I really hope Japanese schools have better integration that this because it would not be legal in the US.

Yeah social anxiety really makes you hear things that are not there, something I can especially attest to with having been bullied for majority of my elementary school years. I'm just casually walking in the streets and suddenly hear kids (or adults, mostly happens with kids tho) laughing and my brain instantly makes it about me and believes they are laughing at me because that is what I've been conditioned to believe for majority of those elementary school years when my brain was still developing. Not only that though, it's a metaphor for him and Shoko being the same. He put his voice and thoughts into what they are saying, just how Shoko always thinks shes causing people issues with her inability to hear. They approach it differently but they think the same way. It's another reason behind why he asked her to show him how to live, because they are in the same boat and on a very similar journey for recovery and self love

I'm not sure... I thought the bullying happened during break times and after schools. Sahara moved to another school without saying anything, and definitely Nishimaya herself wouldn't tell the teachers who's the bullies. So I'm not surprised that the teacher had little clue who are responsible for the girl, other than Shouya. Especially that it's only Shouya himself that blatantly bullies Nishimaya during classes, while everyone else are having fun watching it from behind, making him easier to be blamed. Other than that, I'm pretty sure there are strict rules for teachers that prevents them to directly handle the situation when there's no major complaint. Although it's true that the teacher is the first person to shift the blame to Shouya. Then again, regarding strict rules, I assume the teacher has been holding his anger towards Shouya for a long time, hence slamming the chalkboard when there's finally a serious complaint. If anyone deserves the hate is Shimada. The character barely had any story as well, other than just being the bigger bully.

"Depression doesn't go away, doesn't lift for most people, its something they still have to wrestle with, its still there. But there's a capacity to feel again, there's a capacity to feel joy." This is quite possibly the best take away anyone could have. Bravo Mr. Decker! I just watched this movie for the first time and I am writing this 12 hours later. I am still crying thinking of all the powerful moments. I cannot believe how little people know about this phenomenal film in the west. As someone that was bullied in middle school myself I really connected with this film and it quite possibly might be my favorite animated film of all time. Definitely in the top 3.

I also love that part at the end where the “mean girl” call’s Nishimiya a “moron” in speech and sign language and at first Nishimiya seems like she’s shocked by this but then she corrects her and you realize that she wasn’t upset that the girl insulted her, she just saw she was doing it wrong. How demoralizing must it be to a bully to try to insult someone and your intended target is so high above you that they don’t just ignore you but actually try to help you insult them properly?! 😂
@ariannebrodeur
@ariannebrodeur 2 года назад
i actually think the point of that scene was not that Ueno made a mistake, but that she used sign language. up until this point only Sahara, Ishida and Yuzuru knew how to sign to communicate with Shoko, its pointed out several times by the others and Ueno herself, bc learning any language can be quite difficult. the point of the scene to me was that Ueno had made an effort to learn sign language, despite saying she hated Shoko. Shoko was surprised and repeated her to point that out- she was happy Ueno cared but laughed because it contradicted what Ueno had been portraying- thats why Ueno got embarrassed-she accidentally outed herself. i could be wrong tho, i dont speak sign language so i may not have noticed her correcting her, but to me that scene was meant to show Ueno isnt all bad and she does want to be friends, she wants to be better.

It mirrors the scene when Ishida is walking down the hallway at school he covers his ears to block out the sound of everyone around him and when Ishida finally uncovers his ears he lets the sound back in and is finally able to forgives himself. Something that really resonated with me about A Silent Voice is how both main characters are carrying burdens exacerbated by their mental struggles. Main Character-kun did wrong as a kid, but who doesn't? He absolutely didn't deserve how he was treated- abuse to an abuser is destructive as opposed to constructive, and it's often only through being constructive that we as people really move past wrong. Nishida's disability does cause difficulty, but it's not something those close to her resent her for and those that do resent her weren't being fair. Both were essentially scapegoats for the problems that happened in that classroom, and both carry the scars for it. I often find that with my own mental health I tend to get caught up on my perceived wrongs and faults- and perhaps with some of those there's a grain of truth, everybody messes up and does wrong sometimes. But self forgiveness and making reparations where they can be made is the only true way to move on from that. Thank you for discussing this movie, it's really powerful.

But I think Coco won that year. Which you could still argue A Silent Voice is a better film than Coco. At least Coco is still a great movie as well. But of course, it's always Disney at those things. To me, in the last scene, the reason why the crosses fell and Ishida starts crying inconsolably it's because he finally fogives himself. It is also the reason why he didn't go with her advances when she fells in love with him (besides the fact that he didn't quite get it at first), he just couldn't forgive himself so in his eyes he wasn't worthy of her love. This movie absolutely broke me. And I watched it on the same weekend with "I wanna eat your Pancreas" and Josie, among others... I almost died crying.

I heard it all the time that people said "it takes a lots of courage to ask forgiveness" but no one realize there a next part to it which is "but asking forgiveness doesn't mean you're forgiven". The courage is not used during but after when the person does not forgive you. And I tell you it hurts, when they remain silent when you're begging for forgiveness. 🥲

seeing the scenes where Ishida tried to set things right (in his own way) with his mom because he felt guilty of taking away so much of her savings when she gave money to Nishimiya's mother as an apology for Ishida ruining her hearing aids and seeing him slowly let himself go by erasing traces of his life (selling all his belongings etc.) was so heartbreaking to me because that conveyed perfectly what it felt like to want to disappear from someone's life because you felt like a burden. It makes you want to erase yourself from their life because you feel guilty in a way for being there and causing problems. I myself had a period of time when I was younger where I wondered what it'd have been like for my family if I simply never existed and it felt awful, but it did allow me to relate a lot to Ishida and it was so nice seeing this story of his come to a good place (even though the actual story of them irl didn't turn out well). I discovered this movie a few years ago when i was very much struggling with depression. It's now one of my favorite movies. Although i do like the english version better. They cast an actual deaf girl to play shoko and the scenes that she really tries to come out to people are heart-wrenching. Like when she is cleaning off shoya's desk in the flashback and they fight. Or when she is saying she hates herself on the ferris wheel. This movie is so beautifully done. It reminded me to stay in touch with friends and family. There are always people that care about and want the best for you. I can't recommend this movie enough to people.

My mom has this saying that "behind the bully is someone who was bullied" People don't hurt others for no reason... its always another domino, every bully has something they are trying to hide, or keep, or steal because the bullies are the ones who are hurting, and their anger boils out on other people and hurts them too. And its really true; hurt people hurt people

This is my opinion but I think this is not the best view in things. Sometimes people just bully. Even if they have not been bullied and they have good personal life. But some cases yeah bullying makes new bullies

That's absolutely not true. Some people are sadists, or some kids are just selfish and don't realise the consequences of what they are doing (Nishida for exemple). Some bullies have been bullied, or are scared of being bullied, true. But saying they all are is so incredibly wrong. Even the movie goes against what you're saying: the protagonist was pretty popular when he started bullying. It's only when he got bullied himself that he learnt empathy and realised what he put her through.

There are definitely people who hurt others for no reason, or at least, not for a sympathetic reason. The Simpsons, of all things, put it best, I think- "Well, animals are a lot like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them act badly because they’ve had a hard life or have been mistreated. But, like people, some of them are just jerks."

I read the manga this is based on in december last year. Haven't had the courage to watch the adaptation yet. I *heard* it's good, but the thing is, it was kind of a painful read. Nishimiya's story of getting bullied for being handicapped - for disrupting the good atmosphere of the community she came into, more specifically - is very true to my own life. While I'm not deaf, I have other disabilities that impacted my school life and that ended up getting me bullied. I eventually got into hospital with a leg injury (caused by my bully) and he was so distraught that he tried to end himself (by jumping). The parallels were scary. The manga has 7 volumes and takes the entirety of the first one to show the childhoods and the bullying, before the second book starts with the time skip. I ended the second book wholeheartedly hating Ishida. And to be honest, I at first hated how much the story focused on his struggles because I kinda felt like he deserved it. But, and that's the part that surprised and impressed me, by the end of the story I managed to root for him and was completely turned around. As mentioned, I still have not watched the movie. Part of it is because it actually takes energy to ingest this story, but a part of me also is scared that I might feel the movie doesn't live up to the story. Seeing some scenes here though, kinda makes me want to do it. It looks beautiful.

The film didn't contain the entire manga and the loss of some moments upset me, because they were important to me personally. But it's really very, very good. Somehow few years ago I accidentally stumbled upon the trailer of this movie, then read the entire manga overnight and I've never cried so much in my life. Watching the film will also require mental strength, the voices of the actors and music added even more emotions. Still not a manga, but it also causes catharsis after catharsis. There is an incredibly gentle and respectful attitude to the original and this is the most worthy work on manga that I have ever seen. Sorry for my English... ~♥

This movie has been my favourite since I first found out about it, not only for the look in to depression, but also because it hits hard knowing that the way she was treated is still very much a reality for people who need to use sign or writing to communicate because so many people are just unwilling to communicate in anything other than oral language.

Near the end, when they meet on the bridge, after he apologizes to Nishimiya, Shoya asks her to help him live (at 15:36 in the reaction video). The distinction is that he's asking for her to help him, giving her a reason to continue living. The subs here are off, but both other subs and the manga make the line "I want you to help me live."

I relate a lot to both Ishida and Nishimiya. I've experience loneliness from being asshole (often unaware) and the outcast. It became a defence mechanism to block others out and by whatever means necessary due to my own experience of toxic relationships that's developed into this subconscious refusal to trust people. I've been the toxic person in peoples life, and that is a hard thing to wrap you're head around, especially when you have been both a victim and a perpetrator. Not all victims become perpetrators, or perpetrators becoming victims, but anyone who has turned another into a victim loses the chance of revival

The voice acting for Nishimiya was absolutely beautiful. It was well-executed both in English and in Japanese but also there are points where Nishimiya tries to use her own voice to say things but there's a language barrier that only makes sense in Japanese. There's a phrase "sukida," which is a part of saying I like or I love you usually in a romantic manner. But it also sounds like Tsuki the moon. And so there's this added part of she can't even use her own voice to communicate. She's one of those characters that takes all burdens and blames on herself. I think both voice actresses nail it and it's beautiful to watch beautiful to hear.

I watched this movie for the first time last week. I've been holding myself back to watch this movie, because I already now the key points and story of it. I shed tears the first time Nishimiya introduce herself to the class at the beginning of the story. I was sad because she just wanted to be friends with her classmates but ended up getting bullied just because she was deaf. Another reactor pointed out that Nishimiya never done anything wrong. She was just existing and deaf, yet she had to experience horrible things at such a young age. I cried when the film showed us that she wanted to end it all since elementary days when she was getting bullied. Before watching this, Anohana and Violet Evergarden was the saddest film/series for me. But after watching this movie, this is definitely clears both, at least for me. This hits closer to my experience with frustrations and depression couple of years back. I can relate to a certain level with what Nishimiya and Ishida feels throughout the movie. Anxiety, cutting off contacts with friends that i used to hangout with due to feelings of being ashamed of myself and hating myself. Throughout the movie i shed many kinds of tears because of hatred, pity, anxiety, and ended up with joyful tears during the end scene where Ishida finally not seeing Xs on peoples' faces. The fact that this was made by the same studio that made Violet Evergarden my top 2 film/series that i will always recommend to people.

If you haven't read the manga, I highly recommend it. The movie is a masterpiece but the manga goes even deeper in to all of the characters. Some of my favorite characters from the manga were characters that were barely explored in the movie like Nishimiyas mom and the guy who's friends with Kawai and also Kawai herself. It's a great read, it's really short (you can finish it in a few hours), it adds even more to the characters, so if that sounds good you should read it.

I love this movie with all my heart. The connection I have with it goes beyond that. I was in the situation of the bullied and the bully. I have mild hearing loss so ever since 2019 I have had to wear hearing aids. It was hard to connect with friends, even though I was friends with them before I got hearing aids. I feel like people put me in a category, feeling bad for me and treating me differently. It has always been hard to connect with people since my harsh childhood and having a hearing disability did not make it any easier. I also had the role of the bully. I said really harsh things to some people and threatened people in 7th grade. I dealt with a truckload of guilt to the point where I became suicidal and developed depression. Instead of people trying to understand what I did wrong, they kept on bringing it up and shamed me for it, especially my dad. It was really easy to relate to all of the characters in this movie and it made me realize a lot of things. More or less over time, I don't really feel guilty about those things because it was a long time ago. I never really made proper amends even though I apologized so much. I guess it was more of a forgotten thing instead of forgive and forget. I just wish someone was able to tell me that I didn't do anything wrong sooner. I just want to tell those people that I was projecting what was going on at home. I wish I could change what I have done but it shaped me into the person I am today and that's not so bad. The thing that was really realistic about this movie was those small details. Looking at people's feet or small little details. Then those details stay in your mind for the rest of your life, always bringing you back to that certain memory. Those small little strawberry candies will always be my main memory. I'm sorry Mr. Brooks. I'm sorry Riley. I'm sorry Candice. I'm sorry Leaf.

But he, and his former friends where all very quick to turn on him and throw him under the bus. Watch Ishida's body language also. He's mimicking sign language when first introduced in his class. But stopped after Ueno voiced her dislike of it. He was the only one who bully'd her about to raise his hand when the terrible teacher asked, no one else did. And so much more. I think the scene that hit me the hardest was when Yuzuriha and Shoko's mom were pulling down all of the photos. When I first saw it, I thought, "How much different would it have been if Shoko actually did die that night?" The more I thought about it, the more I started to realize that it might not have changed at all. There was nothing that either of them could have said or done to stop her. The only reason why she's alive right now is because Shoya managed to catch her. I don't know if this is how family members grieve when someone commits suicide (and I'm too afraid to ask anyone I know who's had to go through that), but I would imagine it would have to be something like this. Just wondering if there was anything they could have done differently to stop their loved one from making that choice.
