Noticed that Dustin always hang out with older male friends and even sees them as role models. Makes sense since we've never got to see his father in the picture.

*14:38* Wow…that explanation you gave about why you think Mike didn’t say “I love you” this whole time until the last episode really struck me. I often feel like I’m battling with that too. I have a boyfriend who has a job, has his permit, has friends while I am having trouble finding a job, no longer have a permit, and has little friends. It’s very hard for me sometimes to have value in myself and know that I am worth his love even though he tells me everyday he loves me. I love him so much back because he makes me want to be a better successful person. I’m the Mike in the situation and he’s El. He says he loves me more but in reality, I love him more.
@dogdog7883
@dogdog7883 2 года назад
That is a really beautiful way of explaining this situation

That’s a good point and something I didn’t think about before about Eleven is that she has always been the hero & this powerful person in Mike’s eyes and now that she doesn’t have any powers she might be scared that Mike won’t like her if she’s not as strong or just be very embarrassed that she isn’t as strong anymore. She might want to give the perspective that she is still strong and doing well because of that.

14:32 i think that another reason for his difficulty on saying i love you comes from seeing his parents maybe they clearly dont love each other and that must have been confunsing for him (and even nancy we've seen she has trouble saying it too)
@lightvale

girl WHAT? nancy couldn't say ily to steve because she didn't love him romantically anymore...not because she doesn't see her parents say it, she literally has no problem saying she loves jonathan. did we watched the same show?😭

Do you take requests? Just cause I think Jonathan as a character overall in the series is really interesting and how his relationship with his father effects how he makes his choices. Like it literally influences everything he does. Its another reason I'm sad he isn't given much to do in the show cause I think there is a lot of potential there to be a super interesting character that barely gets touched on.
@matariki9818

Maybe there's more to Mike not saying I love you to El' : each time he's vulnerable, she disappears somehow. Like their first kiss, she disappeared moments later fighting the Demogorgon. Then she disappeared for a year, and he called her each day and she DIDN'T answer. Not her fault, but she didn't answer. Maybe it's a way of preserving the relationship as well.

Aaah congrats on the 125k! I'm so happy you're celebrating through a Stranger Things video because I've been thinking so much about the new season haha! This video was so interesting-I loved having the breakdown of the emotional turmoil we see the characters going through during the season! Even though Eleven is far from being my favourite character (nothing particular against her, but there are simply so many incredible and complex characters in the series!), I really did love her standing for her truth and acknowledging Dr Brenner as an abuser! Also you made me see Dustin and Eddie's arc in a way which I hadn't fully processed, and I thank you for that, because it's making me love the two of them even more! Btw, I think my favourite video of yours is tied between your breakdown of family relationships in Encanto (the video which made me discover your channel, actually!) and your defence mechanisms video, which I thought was so informative! I still find myself thinking about it during social encounters.

One thing that I would love to hear your opinion on is the almost affectionate way that Henry/001/Vecna handled El. Was it simply grooming? Did he feel genuine affection for her? The way he treated her seemed out of character for him because he was so disconnected and disgusted with the other people in his life.
@StarryNightxx
@StarryNightxx 2 года назад
I genuinely think he cared about her because he saw himself in her. He actually believed for real that he was rescuing her by killing all those kids that bullied her. He only started to hate her because after everything he did for her she hurt him. (Although killing a bunch of people in front of a child isn't much of a gift lmao)
@shadowseer07
@shadowseer07 2 года назад
I think 001 did feel a kind of kinship with El, but I think that’s why he almost seems to be punishing her later, because he sees their difference in character as a betrayal on El’s part.

I think that his connection to El, and why he had an interest in her and informed her about the memory of her mother will be revealed in season 5. He and her mom were being experimented on by Dr. Brenner at the same time. There are many fan theories about Henry and his relationship to El or El's mom

I wish you would break down Eddie & Chrissy. I realize that there wasn't a whole lot to see there. But for some reason I am just obsessed with Eddie & Chrissy. I feel like they would've gotten together. Mostly because of WHO Eddie was and WHAT happened to Chrissy's past. It never was fully explained but I feel that Chrissy had grown up as a Pageant Princess and has all these expectations to be Head Cheerleader, Prom Queen, etc etc. But apparently Chrissy doesn't want that...she was forced to live that life by her over-domineering and mentally abusive mother. And Eddie would've been like...Chrissy, be who YOU want to be and fuck what everyone else thinks. And with that support she may have fallen for Eddie. Like she'd be thinking "FINALLY someone who is interested in MY wants & dreams". I'm sure that Eddie had a thing for Chrissy. I mean, even if they won't admit it....every dude had a thing for the head cheerleader.

you talking about mike with the i love you thing would make sense if mike didn’t know what she wanted him to do to fix the relationship but he knows the problem is him not saying he loves her… if he wants to keep the relationship he knows el needs to hear “i love you” so hes not afraid of what she would say or if it would ruin the relationship bc HE LNOWS SHE NEEDS TO HEAR THOSE WORDS. smth else is holding him back n i wonder what it could be. /lh
@Nikolai12
@Nikolai12 2 года назад
Mike still has insecurities of feeling like he doesn't deserve El, he talks about this in the van scene with Will, and since Will has been his longtime best friend, he feels comfortable going a little more into his vulnerable side with him, espsecially while worried about the love of his life who is in danger and not being able to do anything about it but ride in a van for hours. He needed someone to confide in at that moment when he was so stressed out about El that even Will noticed and had start the conversation by reassuring Mike that El would be fine. And those insecurites most likely come from being constantly bullied and known as a loser nerd to the kids at school, and possibly growing up with the parents he has didn't help, and certainly traumatically losing El in front of his very own eyes when he was only 12 played a big part in shaping that insecurity/fear. El confronting him on why he won't say it just amplified the pressure and insecurity at that moment, and since she got taken away by police and Brenner shortly after their little fight, there wasn't time to resolve their problem until the surfer boy pizza scene when they could finally talk 1on1. But he was also interrupted before he could say it then too, as he was also interrupted while attempting to say it to her in season 3 grocery aisle scene. So despite struggling with being open to El with his vulnerable feelings, he's made attempts but with bad luck interruptions from other people. Plus everything she said in this video was spot on. There's really no other big underlying reasons, he said he loves El in the cabin scene in season 3 and the next step was telling her directly which was frightening knowing he felt he wasn't worth her love. Mike in the van scene is literally so afraid El will just magically wake up one day and leave him when she realizes he's a loser, like this is something he really struggles with... and it's why he struggles with expressing his emotions of love and putting those vulnerable feelings out there to her. Brushing that off for some other out there explanation is ridiculous honestly...

I will say in regards to will’s apparently jealousy from my point of view: While I know it hasn’t been fully explained, the moment that he comforts Mike in the car speaks volumes. As a queer person myself, I could see how Will used Eleven as a projection for all of his feelings for Mike. And while some people may disagree, it’s way easier to see that this is what Will is feeling because especially during the 80s, being gay was hated as a lot of people used AIDS as a way to push homophobia. Will’s fear of rejection, especially coupled with how society would reject Will for being attracted to the same sex hits all to hard.

Brenner is 100% the monster. Aside from all the moral issues with creating the lab to begin with, we also see his continuous physical and mental manipulation and control. Literally trying to hold El hostage. He's the villain here from start to finish.

@randomsoprano85
@randomsoprano85 2 года назад
I agree, but what do you make of his genuine tears? Even though he was a monster, do you think he actually did care about El, and that there is some nuance there of him being not 100% bad?
@oraclecrystal5138
@oraclecrystal5138 2 года назад
@@randomsoprano85 I don't think he's a 100% bad person, as very few characters are. We even see Vecna treating El with kindness, as she's probably the first person he meets and respects. So despite being the monster in a story, a character can still have redeeming moments and qualities. I say Brenner is 100% the monster here because he had redemption opportunities up until the end and never took those opportunities. Was he all bad as a person? Perhaps not. But he consistently chose to be the villain. Similarly, our "heros" can have some "bad" qualities as well and still be the hero. We see El choose violence against her bullies and at first she truly believes she killed all the other people in the facility. Mike is often a bad friend. But they still remain the "heroes" of the story. So I would classify Brenner as 100% the villain/monster, even if he's not 100% "bad".
@SariaSchala
@SariaSchala 2 года назад
@@oraclecrystal5138 I think Brenner did care but not in the right way, he obviously was very sad when Vecna killed most of his subjects but he didn't see them as real humans, just tools or maybe pets. Also he did everything 100% the wrong way, right down to experimenting on Henry rather than actually trying to help him.
@professionalfangirl7024
@professionalfangirl7024 2 года назад
I feel that Brenner and El have such a complicated relationship as he was the first father figure, or parental figure in general to ever appear in his life. In her mind, though she knows better, some part of her still recognises him as "home". As the actors themselves have said, Brenner truly did love El, but was way too involved with his pursuit for science and discovery to truly realise how much he has mentally damaged El.

Mike's fear of saving "I love you" sort of reminded me of Hughie's masculinity issues in The Boys season 3. While there are obvious differences, they are both potentially feeling insecure because they feel like they need their girlfriends, and not the other way around (a misconception, as men shouldn't feel the need to protect their partners). Then, just like Hughie (spoiler alert) realized that he had other strengths besides pure power that could help Annie, Mike realized (partially through Will's advice) that it didn't matter how powerful Eleven was, she would always need him purely for his heart and love for her which goes all the way back to season 1.

16:24 this is so true! I was feeling weird how people were dismissing Mike's feelings because I kind of understand him and even I don't say "I love you" to the people I care about the most in my life that much, I'm more of the "actions" if that makes sense. I can understand his reasons and see his pov because I have been in his shoes and still am.

i really love eddie and dustin’s relationship. it was so obvious dustin really cared for eddie, he did so much for him. i feel like eddie might be the person who doesn’t really have close friends so when dustin was the one there for him he realized that it felt good to have someone by his side. like when dustin was worrying about eddie and he hugged eddie and it caught eddie off guard but he hugged back. i feel like they were the perfect duo, they were like younger brother and older brother that care about eachother a lot. i wish we saw more of them.

Thank you for this! This was an amazing analysis. 👏🏼 But, most importantly, thank you for your take on Mike. Thank you for explaining because we have been explaining it since forever, and people just keep spreading hate and misunderstanding and misinterpreting his actions. And it affects me so much because he is my favourite, and I can relate to him, and I know where he is coming from, and it feels like a personal attack when people say anything against him.

I also feel like if u talk about ur feelings, you kinda become more volnerable. I used to be so attached to the friend I had since kindergarten, and I was so terrified of losing her. That fear she kinda used against me. I did lose her. So with both Max and Mike struggeling to open up, in good and bad ways, it could also be because of volnerability? Like with Max being abused by Billy, like their realationship. I dont think she could ever hate him, but the feelings she has, and the guilt. Its not easy.

I suck at picking only one favourite thing, but I agree that Dustin is one of the best characters-he brings comedic relief, as well as serious plot development, and his relationships with several characters (Steve and Eddie, specifically) are so wonderful! Also Gaten Matarazzo's acting is phenomenal! That being said, I looooove love love Erica, Robin and Steve as characters. All of them have really interesting growth and something awe-inspiring in them (Erica's completely unapologetic sense of self, Robin's intelligence and, again, unapologetic quirkiness, and Steve's loyalty and ability to acknowledge his past faults) Sorry for rambling, haha, but this show really shines through some of its character development in my opinion!

Hi Steph! I actually found you through a video outside of your channel called "therapist breaks down couples fighting in movies& TV" with GQ. At the time I was still in graduate school to also become an LMFT, so coming across a video that had another LMFT was very exciting for me! I think the videos of you breaking down movies are so fun and enjoyable for me to watch not only as a viewer but in an educational way for me to learn in this profession too! However, I would say right now, my favorite video on this channel would be the "imposter syndrome as a therapist" one because it is something I experience heavily :( I have just received my LMFT-A license this spring but am still job searching. Job searching has always been daunting for me and contributes to the negativity of imposter syndrome. So I'd love to see more videos on self care for therapists, how to stay optimistic and motivated in finding the best fit out there in this career for new therapists, how to find your confidence and agency in this new chapter as a therapist, something along that realm. It's lonely having to go through this and hard to navigate through. But I'm glad I found your videos and it's helped me through my therapy journey😌 Congrats on your milestone--both to you and to your husband's work in this hit tv show! You guys deserve to celebrate, and keep it up!! My ig handle is @ctnguyen5. Take care, Christine

smth i wanted to add to mike's segment!! i totally agree that it's a vulnerability-related thing, and i wanted to say that it also definitely comes from his upbringing and family environment! we see the wheelers' family situation the most (second to the byers') in the show, and while karen tried her best back in the first couple seasons, it's made quite clear it's not the most emotionally open environment. karen and ted aren't a very good model for marriage either, and i can say that can definitely influence a kid's ideas of relationships (romantic and otherwise) very early on. it's not talked about very often - only mentioned/alluded to a couple times by nancy (/jonathan) in the first season, and we're showed it more than we're told of it. but i've seen people talk about how that's a likely factor in why mike struggles to express emotion and say vulnerable things like ilys (even back in season three! he could barely say the word love TT he kept repeating 'blank makes you crazy, yk??') anyway other than that super cool video :]

Music saved me too. I absolutely bawled my eyes out watching Max in season 4. I originally watched it with my family and then went back and watched it alone because it felt so...real. like it's fictional but the fact that music literally saved her and we get to watch that battle was so touching.

I read this elsewhere but another factor that might be contributing to Mike not telling Eleven he loves her is the lack of affection his parents show each other. He has never really seen an example of what he understands to be the most important partnership in his life (other than his own) being vulnerable and expressing that they do love each other and thus he doesn’t know how to express these strong feelings he has for Eleven.

@@StephAnya Yes please. It's so complicated. People often just assume Billy was only being OTT protective of Max and acting how his dad acted with him, while downplaying his abusive and manipulative behavior toward her (plus his racist attitude toward her black friend), and the emotional and psychological toll he and her lack of social support had on her. His "protectiveness" was more about having control over her than a genuine act. She was not only frequently gaslit but also didn't have the support system to work through all that.

When I was in high school, my social anxiety and depression was at its worst, but for some reason I worked up the courage to talk to someone in my PE class, as I was changing from my PE clothes to my regular clothes, I was trying to strike up a conversation with that person in my PE class and then after a few minutes he and his friends walked away from me so then I ran up to them and as we were at the cafeteria after I got my cafeteria food, once again, him and his friends walked away from me, they just vanished and disappeared and I looked everywhere to find them, and I couldn't find them at all, so I sat I my regular sitting my alone like I usually did and then there another day in high school where even though my social anxiety was at its absolute worst, I still for the reason worked up the courage to strike up a conversation with a group of 3 other people during lunch, I thought I'd be able to talk to all 3 of them but It turns out that it was only me and the other guy talking, because as we were talking, I noticed right away that his friends were in the background and the whole time they crossed their arms and gave me the dirtiest looks ever, after that I was so humiliated and embarrassed and traumatized, that I decided to never talk to any groups of people in my high school ever again even outside of school because whenever I did that and they didn't like that, I ALWAYS felt like a burden to them and to everyone else in my high school, so that's why I do not talk to anyone that I dont know in general not just because my social anxiety is at its absolute worse whenever I strike up a conversation with anyone but I ALWAYS feel like a burden to everyone in general that I don't know, so I can totally relate to max from stranger things, not friends wise but strangers wise because whenever I am with my friends, I do NOT ever feel like burden to any of them at all, whenever I am texting or video chatting my friends or whenever I hang out with them in public I am 100% an open book and I feel like I can actually be true to myself when I'm with my friends or talking to them, I just don't feel that way at all when I see any strangers in general whenever I'm in public

to be honest, i was kinda disappointed that Henry/Vecna was "evil" from the beginning. i think it'd be more interesting if it was dr benner's treatment that made Vecna like that. it'd create more parallels between him and jane (i don't really like using el as a name for her) and make their dynamic more interesting. i don't really like the "doomed from the start" kind of villains
