How do you hold onto your dreams through success and hardship?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to the magic of Wonka. They’re taking a look at Wonka’s optimism, hope, and deep desire to make dreams come true. Jonathan talks about how Willy’s origin story informs his drive to pursue his dream of becoming a chocolatier. And Johnathan opens up about how he can relate to Willy’s story. Alan shares why he knew Wonka was going to be good, but he was skeptical of Timothée Chalamet… what does he think now?

You forgot the three worst thinks in this movie do with Willy Wonka character ever : 1. He has nothing in common even in his story with Willy Wonka who Charlie Bucket was met(And with Roald Dahl book Charlie and the chocolate factory or even orginal concept of his character0Such a shame!. 2. Trying to copy many thinks from first version of cinema adaptaction of Roald Dahl book call Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory(for example oompa lumpas look,Pure imaginaction song)3.That was the worst propagate insult house of God ,confession sacrament and priesthood !!! For me as a Christian and Catolic it's not bear thinking about!!! But maybe I shouldn't be surpised as much I was because this movie was created producers not just Paddington bear movies(which I really like) but also harry potter series. It It speaks for itself. Of course, in general, people, like you, do not care about this type of films and treat them as a naive fairy tale. In reality, however, it is they who, in their naivety and stupidity, allow themselves to be caught in such satanic traps, and the further one goes in that direction, the less possible it is to return to the path of goodness, truth and Faith, and for this the help of priests and exorcists is often needed. Because without them, the world would have drowned in sin and corruption a long time ago. And that, unfortunately, is what this film is. Under the guise of candy-colored set design and costumes, a simple, overcomplicated story put together by force, and musical sounds. People, finally open your eyes and minds! This is an example of evil masquerading as good, i.e. one of the worst lies, and not a beautiful musical!!!💔😑🤧😭😞

Some people think this movie is a “betrayal” of Wonka’s character because it shows him as a kind person, and the original movie had him show little care for the fates of the other children. But I think it’s a little more complicated. Firstly, this is Wonka in his twenties. It’s natural to assume that he might’ve changed a lot since then. But also, Wonka in the first movie wasn’t some child killing monster. The bad things that happened to the kids were the result of their bad behavior, and he said at the end that they would be fine. Most importantly, the first movie made it clear that while he has become somewhat jaded because of other people’s betrayal, he still greatly values honestly and kindness when he sees it. He not only knows that goodness does exist in the world, but that the lack of it makes it all the more precious. It’s like what Lofty says at the end of the movie; “So goes a good deed, in a weary world”. The Wonka in this movie himself is a victim of the greediness and cruelty of people, as well as Noodle and his friends. That’s why he has no patience or sympathy for people who act greedy and cruel. And when Charlie proves to be an honest and kind child, he immediately gives him everything he has.

Agreed ❤❤❤ I need to remind myself when people try to dismiss the mindset. I think most of the time because they forgot how to dream. They only have a distant memory and a faint feeling of how wonderful it felt and that they subconsciously long for that. They then project that onto dismissing or denigrate our way of life to lure us over to their more hollow experience and frame of reference. Mainly because that way they don't have to be reminded of what they lost along the way.

"It's not the chocolate that matters. It's the people you share it with." My version of that sentiment is buying drinks for my friends at my favorite bar, and accepting drinks from them in return. The point is that we are sharing something more than drinks. Or chocolate, or whatever else we may share. I feel like it really is the people we are sharing our time with and the memories we make along the way.

That's me with my niece. Whenever she's sad, she says it would be good to eat grandma's cake. So we go to the kitchen and together we bake the cake that my grandma used to make me every week when I was a child. Then we eat it still hot, laughing because it's too hot. She always says it her favorite food in the whole universe! And she feels better, and I feel great. It's not about the cake, is about me sharing with my favorite person something that has a sentimental value to me, and with that, taking care of her, and creating core memories ever since she was a little kid.

I loved the emphasis placed on Found Family, and that Wonka's ragtag group of boarding house misfits gradually become a family to each other. And while there's a bit of romance, namely with the two guards with a mutual crush, I liked that they didn't give Wonka a love interest, and instead had him serve as a big brother figure of sorts to Noodle.

I haven't seen this movie yet for a variety of reasons, but from what I can see from this video, it really captures the soul of Wonka from the original books. There's a line in the second book that talks about Wonka retreating from the Bucket Grandparents having an arguement and sadly looking at his chocolate waterfall because it deeply upsets him to see and hear people fight and be angry. Willy Wonka is a silly little guy, but he feels very deeply and passionately and Timothee Chalamet does a fantastic job of capturing that soul to the point where I can actually forget who he is and just see the character.

This made me smile because recently my friend told me he had never had one of those Cadburry chocolate bars with caramel in them. I splurged with the last few dollars I had so we could split it together and it was 10 at night and we sat there in the parking lot eating it and it was a nice moment for us both. Jono, you have helped me see hope in the world after years of struggling to. I was terrified to see a therapist in person, but listening to your insights and advice pulled me out of a crisis I never thought I’d escape from. You are warm, caring, kind, and full of spectacular light. Alan, you’ve given me the courage to follow my dreams fearlessly. I spent so much of my life hearing people tell me I needed to have a back up plan. I spent so long worrying that my dreams were too big. Your perseverance, passion, creativity, and boundlessly open heart has made me feel limitless. I’m going after the dream that I’ve had since I was a child, and I couldn’t have gotten to this place without you two. Because of you, I see hope in the future again. So, once again, thank you for everything you do. Thank you for sharing your light with the world. Thank you. ❤️ Alan, I just wanted to note on what you said about “giving up on your dream”. I think you underestimate yourself far too often. You are a talented, insightful creative with an amazing eye for filmmaking. Being on RU-vid allows you to touch the lives and hearts of so many people, myself included. Yes, Hollywood directors can use their medium to connect with audiences, but not as intimately and inspiringly as RU-vid allows you to connect with us. Your dream is still alive. You have become a trailblazer in the world of cinema in a format no one has experimented with before. I think the work you’re doing on Cinema Therapy is so amazing, and necessary in our world. I think you’re more worthwhile than you give yourself credit for. It is an honor to be inspired by you. Jonathan, I hope you start singing show tunes as you walk into the room again. You deserve the love and happiness you put out into the world tenfold. Because of you, I have started waking up with show tunes in my heart again. Because of you, I am excited to live again. I am so grateful that Cinema Therapy exists, so grateful that you beautiful souls exist to heal the world. You’re touching more hearts than you know. You’re changing more lives than you know. I’m so sorry for rambling. ❤ I just had to share. This video, like most, made me emotional in the best way. I watched this with my 4 year old last night. When Willy opened his mom's bar is when I started crying and just continued to the end. I'm an Alan, I cry so often at movies. My 4yo looked over "mommy, are you crying?" I said yes because it's a running joke in our family but then she said, "I love it when you cry" in the sweetest way. Which made me cry some more but it felt good to be reminded that there is nothing wrong with crying.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie (also, one of two scenes that actually made me cry in this movie, the other being the ending scene), is the scene where Wonka gives Noodle her first chocolate. I don't know why, its just kind of heartbreaking but also heartwarming, simply because she hasn't had a true childhood, and to our knowledge, she hasn't had a true set of friends besides the ones working for Mrs. Schrubbit. Then Wonka comes along, and shows her that one piece of chocolate. She likes it, but then her face shifts. And she starts loosing hope about escaping again. All it takes is one glimmer of hope.

I appreciate how much this film referenced the source material while still maintaining its own originality (the way "Pure Imagination" was incorporated in the OST was lovely!) On this note, it might be a bit of a stretch, but I've been wondering if Wonka dropping his final silver sovereign in the gutter at the finale of "Hatful of Dreams" is a subtle nod to the 1971 Charlie & The Chocolate Factory! In the movie, Charlie uses a coin he finds in a storm drain to buy his Wonka bar that contains the golden ticket.

I've made art my whole life, wrote stories, painted etc. I went to an artsy type of school and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in design. I now do a completely different job, which I am good at and I like doing and it actually has nothing to do with art. And it was an active choice to not burn myself out in the world of art and design and to not pursue something as work that contains so much of my soul because I realized it would burn me out over time and I didn't want it enough. Art is still my whole life, but it really didn't need to be my career. I'm glad to be doing work that is a little more separate from my inner soul.

The music IS awesome and my favorite is A World of Your Own too. 3. What about Noodle’s dream? Spoiler alert: she got her dream too. 4. His mom’s smile is great. And Jonathan, my mom died when I was pretty young too and she was also a really amazing person.

I went into this movie with few expectations and left with so much joy. I went back and saw it two more times and recommended it to pretty much everyone. It really brought that childhood wonder back. 'A World of Our Own' was by far the best part of that whole movie, the choreography was so reminiscent of old musical movies, and it always brings a smile to my face. I will never be able to put into words just how much this movie means to me.

This movie made me understand the hype around Timothee too. He’s such an amazing actor. Honestly, now that I’ve seen this, I don’t know if there is anyone else that could have actually captured the Wonka that Gene Wilder gave us. He did it justice. He’s my favorite modern Wonka, absolutely hands down. Now I want to watch everything with him in it. Because I know it’ll be fantastic.

I remember in the original Willy Wonka film there's a line that goes something like "There's 100 million children in the world buying these chocolate bars just like you, and 5 of them will get those golden tickets, and one day later they'll go back to being just like everybody else". While a bit of a harsh lesson for a child (and as it turns out, Charlie doesn't go back to being like everybody else afterwards), but I think it's also important to balance people's dreams with some level of realism. It's OK to not be "the absolute best in the world at this", there is still a lot of value and joy from doing something well enough to satisfy YOU personally, and your loved ones.

I relate to this a lot because I had this dream for my whole life of being a marine biologist. I thought of getting my doctorate and everything. I went to a college a thousand miles away with these bright eyes and cheerfulness and…I found out it’s way harder than I ever thought. I’d always been a good student, but college was a whole new ballgame, and I found myself struggling. And I learned there were aspects of the study that I really didn’t like. Like chemistry. I can’t stand chemistry. And the schooling itself was already hard. It kinda beat me down and made me question my dream. I still loved the ocean and learning about it made me so happy, but suddenly the thought of going out and doing research and writing long scientific papers and stuff just felt so unappealing. Plus I had a really terrible professor who was a major roadblock. Couldn’t pass her class to save my life and I tried twice. Just a super unhelpful person. I had to switch marine biology to my minor instead of my major just so I could graduate on time. It was all a major blow to my dream and I wondered if I’d made the wrong choice. But I didn’t want to give up entirely. I just decided maybe I needed to shift it a little. Maybe I won’t get my doctorate and get interviewed for Shark Week, but I could maybe work in an aquarium, do something on a smaller scale. Maybe one day I could run some kind of educational program to teach kids about the ocean. I may not be making scientific discoveries, but maybe I could plant a spark in a child who might grow up and do that. So right now that’s the new dream. To work with the ocean, but on a smaller scale. Sometimes you just have to shift things around a little. Life happens, things change, but Alan is right. Hold on to being a dreamer, even if you have to loosen your grip on the dream itself. I’m still just a retail worker right now, but I’ve sent in my application to a local zoo and I just really hope maybe one day it could lead to something bigger

I have to say, I enjoyed Timothee Chalamet in Dune, but i didn't get a heartthrob until I saw him in this. His energy in this is so joyful, and his smile's so cute, I fell head over heals, and walked out of the theater like a drunk.

Love the closing message on this video. About ten years ago when I was going thru a tough time I read a book called "Paddle your own Canoe" that brought me to a similar conclusion. It was what motivated me to go back to acting at the local community theatre which was the last time that I had felt really alive. Have been continuing to perform there ever since and have enjoyed every minute of it.

very fitting actually. I had aspirations to be an aerospace engineer or physicist but was not allowed to attend highschool and was made to work in a kitchen instead without pay. plus some trauma related to math due to biological parents. I may be good at math but it causes panic attacks. This helped reframe the situation. I might not build aircraft professionally or enjoy being a physicist with access to amazing equiptment and research opportunities like i always dreamed. but I can always continue in my spare time. and pursuing a career that pays me enough to fulfill my dreams helps put into perspective what i need to focus on. The hardest part to overcome is knowing how happy it made them to see me "fail". When they were supposed to lift you up. I suppose failing is simply giving up on the dreams at all. and you cant ever truly fail if you dont give up. Now if i can be a bit better about watching others enjoy an education and opportunities I was not allowed to have I might be easier to get along with. Bravo gentlemen. Life changing enough that I had to comment.

I have learned recently about toxic hope. I believe that's what kept me in my long abusive and emotionally destructive marriage, and what still keeps me angry at him for cutting our kids completely out of his life and not pay child support for, ever. Today my 12 yr old got a birthday card from ex's very frail 80 yr old dad, Mark, but it was signed for Mark by my ex who wrote "love, grandpa" and that's it. A WHOLE CARD he could have written something nice on to his own son, or even signed "love, dad and grandpa", but nothing. That toxic hope keeps me angry at ex, disappointed by his lack of fathering ability and wishing he'd wake the heck up someday. Someday I will move past that and the sheer gall of the abandonment won't pain me, but it is not this day.

I loved this movie. Especially just the message I got of even through the worse - you can still hope and follow your dream. It is amazing. - I also never heard of Timothy Challamet until this movie (Never saw Dune until a few weeks ago - yes I live under a rock). I was very skeptical of this movie because I absolutely loved the original wonka movie with Gene Wilder. But this movie was amazing all around and I LOVED how well Challamet portrayed Wonka. It gave me young [Gene Wilder] Wonka vibes so much and I felt the two felt connected.

This movie surprised me. It delighted me. I loved Gene Wilder's Wonka. I loved the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I wore out my copy, it had to be replaced. I even recall one year that one of the large department stores was doing a Willy Wonka-based Christmas display and I couldn't go because I had chicken pox. I don't remember any other years I couldn't go. The Willy Wonka I knew was full of child-like wonder and curiosity, a fascination with things that other people might miss, and soupçon of cynicism. Scratch that; reverse it. Carry on. Timothy Chalamet's Wonka was that innocent and curious person who could see the joy in everything. The one we caught a glimpse of at the end of both the book and the first movie (we do not accept Johnny Depp's Wonka). It wasn't the costume. The costume helped, but it wasn't the costume. I had wondered what I loved so much about Wonka and you pointing out that he was about hope, that made sense to me. But that wasn't it. When I was a child, people called me "sunshine." Not facetiously. Everything wasn't puppies and rainbows, but there were a lot of interesting and fascinating and intriguing moments and creatures and people and things and places that brought joy in the most mundane way possible and so many missed it. As I've aged, I relate a lot more to the older Willy Wonka. This movie helped remind me of that person who could look at a cardboard box and see the beauty of the pattern in the corrugation. Realistic optimist. Sometimes shit happened, and sometimes you were going to be sad, but everything didn't have to be horrible. That's where my head was. Then again, maybe that is hope. Also, Sally Hawkins does have an incredible, warm smile. How does she do that?
