If someone was in your back yard, do you think you'd notice? One of the many things that makes living off the grid so difficult, beyond the distance, isolation and logistics of surviving in -20 degree weather, is the psychological games your mind can play when you hear sounds in the woods. And as it turns out near the end of this episode, we weren't just imagining things! We were scared half to death, and we have ‪@talandmads‬ to confirm it. This will make much more sense after you watch this episode! And speaking of, we either did something very right, or very wrong with the drywall. We are bracing for the comments on this one, because things looked smooth and level when we went to sleep, but a little off the next day. Did our drywall catfish us?! We love all the helpful comments from our Patreon Pack, and we read all of them, thank you! After a long week of hard work and a few setbacks, nothing like seeing some friendly faces will lift your spirits. It's good to be reminded: if you fail, try again! A bend in the road is not the end, and it's the courage to carry on that counts! Is there anything we missed? What do you think of the surprise? Comment bellow!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

What would you have done if you saw those two in the woods?! We tried our best to portray just how terrified we were in that moment… at the end of the day we know a few things for sure 1. Drywall is hard 2. There are people in the woods 😂 3. Friends make everything better and show up at the right time even if they spook you (love you Tal & Mads) 💛 4. I just love you two! You make drywall seem so fun, but yes it is hard. Speaking from a girl who has done drywall since she was a child (my dad was a general carpenter) if you think taping is the hardest part, I hate to tell you but you have not even got to the hardest part yet. The sanding is terrible and messy. Get ready for your entire house to be invaded by drywall sanding dust not to mention what it does to your nose and eyes. You will be cleaning gunk out of your nose and eyes at the end of every day. I feel for you. On a better note, it will look good when done. As for myself, I would have went to great lengths to avoid drywall.

Ladies, I had a finish construction company years ago and I hung tons of drywall and taped and mudded thousand of screw holes and seams and I have to say you are impressive as hell. I like how well you two work together and how you take the time to study each aspect of the job you plan to do. Impressive. I remember when I was much younger having to hang 5/8" x 4 ft x15 ft dry sheet rock over my head by myself in a garage. I had to use aluminum stilts to get the height I needed. That was not fun. Anyway, you ladies are doing a great job. I love to watch the two of you tackle some challenging projects and complete each one of them. Keep up the good work.

What I have learned in the past about doing dry wall. 1. thin the mud just a little if using "ready to use" type stuff. 2. A mudding tape gun is really nice. 3. before you let it dry, take a wet sponge and wipe over it. Really cuts down on the sanding part. 4. put on several thin coats, instead of heavy coats. 5.Using a credit card, wipe over all your screws, to make sure they are deep enough. If they aren't, now's the best time to sink them more. 6. A harbor freight drywall lift really makes the ceiling soooo much easier! Every job is a learning experience. And you gals are learning a lot!

Some quick tips for next time: The paper on the ends will just pull off in one long strip. Buy yourself a drywall screw setter bit so the screw doesn't punch through. Only $5 or so for a 3-pack. Use fibre tape, it is stronger but it also is sticky so it will stay in place on the ceiling. If you want a future crack free job, invest in some Durabond 90. Use it to fill the joints and then a thin layer on the fibre tape. It is more work to sand so do not leave excess on the panel. Think of it as a concrete foundation. If you have to sand it, use coarse sandpaper. Finish with regular drywall compound.

Drywall mud shrinks while drying, nothing you did wrong. The problem is if you put it on too thick, it takes alot more sanding, but you two will handle that too. Great videos, keep up the entertainment aspects :)

I am impressed with how well you have done your first drywall job. It is not easy without lots of experience. Unfortunately I have lots of experience. I truly dislike doing it, but I do when needed. A little tip or two for you. First whenever you are placing the drywall on the ceiling it is much easier with a t-brace. The top of the t is on the ceiling and the bottom is on the floor. It needs to be about the same length as the ceiling frames to the floor plus about an inch. Once you have lifted the panel up you put the brace about two feet from the edge and kick it until it locks in. Then you can let it hold the panel up and you can start putting in the screws. Second tip is to add about a half a cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid or equivalent into the drywall mud and mix it in thoroughly. This modified mud will flow much smoother and I never have to sand the seams. All that I do is drag the wide knife across to remove little specs. It is so much easier this way, but you have done very well. Bravo! Kindest regards Your Pal Al

OK mama Berta here who did her She Shed help with drywall. My son told me to take a sponge damp, not soaking, but you can smooth out your drywall mud and make it smooth. Knock down the big chunks but you don’t really have to sand, makes such a mess to do that, so do it the girl way, no he worked in a hospital, and that’s what they did. Also a second coat of mud on your joints makes it look better. So much better with friends there I almost thought you had a Sasquatch! Laughter is the best medicine.❣️❣️❣️🙋‍♀️🌵🥰

You guys did amazing for your first time. If I’m using paper tape like that, I find it easier if I dampen it with a sponge and it will have less bubbles. You need to tape so that the drywall mud doesn’t crack where there’s a seam. You can also try the fiberglass, mesh tape. I find it much easier to work with. The only other thing you can try is make your seems a little bit wider with the mud, a little bit thicker in the middle and then thin it out towards the outside edges. It seems like you’re doing more but in the end it’ll be less sanding and easier to create that flat illusion. Lastly try to avoid four corners together. Stagger your seams next time it’ll make it stronger other than that amazing job. I think everything you’re doing with the cabin is awesome and special. I absolutely love watching your videos. I find you girls extremely inspiring.

heheheeh great work. Maybe a tip for next time. When I've had to do drywall ceilings I've made up a couple of timber stands that look like a T . The cross piece is as wide as the drywall sheet and the leg of the T reaches the floor and the whole T is just a kittle bit longer than the height of the ceiling. You can then sit the sheet on top and wedge the T pieces against the ceiling rafter to help hold everything in place while you screw the sheet off. Love your work !!! From Australia :) Oh something else, we glue the sheets with Gyprok Glue (brand name I think). After it sets you can even remove the screws so that over time as things move you don't end up with little round cracks around the heads of the screws.

Drywall finishing is an art form. It takes practice. Just keep in mind that the more mud you use the more sanding you’ll have to do. I think you did a great job! You’ll be able to start a construction company by the time you finish the cabin lol!

You did great for your first time! I personally prefer the mesh kind of tape instead of paper tape, as it's self-sticking (you only have to put mud on top) so it's easier to apply. (I also feel it creates a stronger bond structurally.) So that might be something to try on a future project to see what you like working with best. But honestly, everybody has to mud and sand and mud again to get a really smooth finish. That's just how it goes, so don't feel bad. One actually important thing, though: It's considered best practice when drywalling to stagger your rows of drywall so you don't have four corners meeting like you see at 10:30. They should be more like a typical brick pattern where the seam for one row is in the middle of the next row's sheet. The seams are the weakest points, so staggering them is stronger, and it makes it easier to hide those seams when mudding. It's how the pros do it! :)
@garyquartley1084
@garyquartley1084 Год назад
Yes, self adhesive mesh tape is the right stuff. I've got a roll of paper tape thet's 15 years old!!!! and you WILL need to sand and re-apply more filler "mud" xx
@danielbenyon6390
@danielbenyon6390 10 месяцев назад
I agree whole heartedly with your points ! ... Just make sure to push the mud through the mesh tape, .. paying close attention to make your first layer a thin scab layer , usually with durabond , because it's a quick hardening product, by the time you get to the end of your first layer of mud the area you did first is dry and ready for layer #2 .. switch compounds and lay in a layer of mud to almost fill the tapered cavity between the sheets , I prefer a thinner finishing compound for this layer , you don't want it to crack because you layed in to much mud and caused it to cure too slowly. Next is your third layer with a 10" wide knife, again finishing compound for a flat level finish, remember that thin layers control shrinkage and decrease the amount of sanding that you will have at the end
@hayojelken8180
@hayojelken8180 Год назад
Great job. Just one suggestion: stagger your joints so that all sheets don't meet on the same rafter. This will spread out the weight and the one rafter won"t sink down.
@Greg-pt7ur
@Greg-pt7ur Год назад
The matching ceiling seams may not cause problems but -should- have been staggered, one at each end. As it is, the seam -may- crack and show. Drywall comes in different lengths (up to 14 foot), to do away with those butt-end joints, you could have used longer drywall and cut it to fit perfectly, leaving only tapered seams. Tape work IS the challenging part. Less mud is the secret. Don't put it on thick if you don't want to have to sand it off later. That is more work and mess than you know. Walls first or ceiling first in a small room doesn't make that much difference. Professionals do ceilings first. The difference is every inch of the edge is supported by the walls and not just by the screws. A very small detail but could be important in a big room. Love watching.

Oh girls, they cheated you. That is the hardest tape to use. My husband and I have restructured all of our homes for the past 52 years (that is because we love old houses that have character). There is a taping product that is so easy and forgiving. It has a sticky side and is made of net. You put it up first as it sticks to the drywall. You put the mud on second,and because it is netted, it presses through the holes to fill the gaps. It costs a little more, but it’s worth the time, energy,and hassle that it saves. You two killed it though 🤩‼️ I’m so excited for you both! Oh yes, another nifty hack, is when your putting up drywall, cut a 2X4 very close to the length between the floor and ceiling. Next cut a piece of wood 4X4-4X6 that is any thickness that you have lying around. Nail it to the top of your 2X4, and place it any place that might want extra support while screwing the other end for instance. It saves your neck, shoulders, or arms. You can use this trick for supporting cabinets. I’m 72, so this has really helped me when doing or last (I do mean LAST) remodel to our off grid 118 year old farm house. My husband and I LOVE your channel ❣️

There is only so much you can do inside with HOA management, but can still put hardwood flooring, paint, new plumbing and lighting. My friend, La’ona has built two remote homes, one is a cabin and the other is an A frame in Alaska. Her channel is called: 1 woman building in last frontier. It makes me want to try my luck with building but I work spring/summer/fall as a Wildland firefighter and it takes up all my time when building is suppose to take place in Alaska.

First off when drywalling either walls or ceilings you always stagger your board-joints, meaning if you start with a full board 4x8 and say the next one is smaller like 4x4, on the other side of your room away start with a 4x4 piece first and then you use a 4x8 piece so the seams will be staggered. that will make your ceiling much stronger and easier to hide your seams. Second of all when muddying your tape in your seams you put a good amount mud on the seam then stick you tape to it and put more mud on top and use your 6” Blade and drag it across and the excess will squeeze out on both sides. Then you come back quickly with your 12 inch knife and smooth it down. That goes for plywood also. Good luck to both of you and I enjoy your videos. Thank you both for sharing.

The #1 thing I learned about drywall when I attempted it was that you can't have 4 corners of it touching. It's supposed to be offset from each other to avoid seams like that (they become a weakness). Maybe that's just a US thing, tho? 🤔 Good job either way, I know those are HEAVY!!
@ebg100

yes, the joints should be staggered. after they paint or wallpaper, it will crack right at the spot where the 4 corners are meeting. Not good. I hope they fix it.
@maudmain6586
@maudmain6586 Год назад
scrolled 20 mins for this comment, it is the number #1 problem for sure. It's not impossible to fix, but it does mean cutting out a section of ceiling to replace it with staggered joints. I'm not a drywaller, but I was definitely cringing. Good effort overall! Its a tough job (have done plenty of ceilings personally).
@annasbanna
@annasbanna Год назад
You gals did a great job at your first drywall attempt, congrats. As someone else commented, its a good idea to stagger the butt joints as it strengthens the application. When i first drywalled, way back in the early 80's, I learned the hard way about how much mud should go under the tape. The result of too much mud under the tape, I had visible humps after all was sanded and painted. So, I textured the ceiling to hide the imperfections. Also, I learned when encountering bubbles in the tape, I used a sharp utility blade and cut out the bubbles and slapped on a little more mud to fill in the shallow holes left. Oh, one last easy trick to cut down on excess mud before sanding: use a putty knife (a 6 inch wide one) and scrape, gently, all the excess before sanding, taking off the ridges and clumps. Can't wait to see all the things you are doing. Love your videos. xoxo

Drywall seams should be offset to prevent cracking and strength. Paper tape is applied to overfilled seams and pressed into the drywall compound then overcoated. Knife widths increase with each subsequent coat. Final coat width is feathered out to roughly 2 feet. AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! Okay, I feel better now.

HI! When I drywalled my basement by myself I rented a drywall lift - it's literally a machine that holds your drywall panel and allows you to winch it up to the roof. It was invaluable (again, I was one person). The drywalling was easy -the mudding was hard! Lots of sandpapering afterward to get down the rough spots. With the ceiling, in the end, I had to hire professionals to fix it and it's still not perfect - small bumps really show up on ceiling. The walls worked out much better.

A simple 2x4 T-square the right length can hold one or even both ends of drywall to the ceiling. Using mesh tape is soooo much easier than paper tape. But for first timers "ya done good".

Whipping the joint compound (The mud) with a drywall whip and a drill motor before you start the taping process will make it a lot easier to bed the tape. Adding some water will also help. A four inch knife is what you should be using to bed the tape. then a 6 inch for the second coat and so on.

It's not hard to dry wall, what's hard, is getting it to look good. Laying the tape and mud so it becomes invisible after sanding, and painting. As your cabin is more rustic I don't think it will matter at all. Slap on some paint and it will be gorgeous. I believe you can do anything you choose to do.. Happy snow and Happy home.

Stagger the butt joints (non-tapered edge) so they are easier to finish and less apt to get a large crack. The other way to eliminate butt joints is to buy bigger sheets of drywall that will be cut to the size of the room that way the butt joint is against the wall and can be covered with wood trim around the ceiling/wall. Add a little dish soap and water to thin the compound (mud) out to make it easier to tape and finish the joints and screws.

A tip when putting on mud ... put in on fast, get as smooth as can in 2 or 3 passed with the trawl, then leave it. let dry sand high spots then fill in low spots on second application on mud the next day. If you put tape into the mud while its still wet, it helps.

Ive been binging this for the last two weeks and loving every minute of it. 😅 I have a real estate business, and if I could throw my 2 cents in. When you do drywall, always get bigger sheets than you need. I think you used 8ft sheets. If you used 10ft, then you wouldn't have to do any butt joints, which are a massive pain in the a$$! Also, when mudding, apply more than you need, its always better to build up and sand down rather than have divits and bubbles. You got this.

I replaced two ceilings in my home (ripping out the old plaster and lath ceilings - so much dust my neighbour called the fire brigade thinking the house was on fire), one by my self. A couple of Dead Man's Props will save your arms soooooo much. You can make them from scrap timber, basically they are just tall T shaped props that you use to hold the drywall against the joists, instead of balancing it on your head or holding it up.

Love you guys! This was such a fun vid to watch. Drywall is very hard especially ceilings. Whatever you do don't paint your ceilings with high gloss paint. It shows every imperfection in your mudding. Peeps in the wood. I would encourage friends to never do this wo a warning that they are coming. Seriously, this could get dangerous in either you think it's them again but it's not, or it is them and you don't think is. And yes, working on house projects with friends is way better than just working by yourself or with your partner. As my Dad used to say, "Many hands make for light work."

When separating new 4x8', 4x10', or 4x12' double sheets they have a tab that instead of cutting to separate sheets you just pull the tab at both ends Does not need cutting! By cutting tabs you might have a wider seem than normal - you need to Thin out your Mud from the bucket add water and use a spin mixer! -3 coats of mud per seam - scaping seams and screw holes with spatula or fine sand paper before next coat The more you do it the better you will get

Get a 1 gallon pail, take some pre-mixed all-purpose mud, and dilute it with a few ounces of water, mix well. You will find this easier to work with when taping, and the tape sticks much better. This method is a little messier, but you'll get the hang of it. Have fun.

I noticed a video on TikTok you were getting some wood that had been split! FROM under a tarp??? Putting split wood under a tarp with sides covered does not allow the wood to dry, The tarp traps moisture in the wood! When it gets warm the moisture in the wood comes out of the wood and then stops at the tarp not allowing the moisture to be removed! This picture of your wood being put in your wheel barrel shows ice on the edges of the firewood/ That shows me exactly that the wood is holding moisture! The fix is to build yourselves a slanted metal roof with some open sides (side the sides with 1x6 1x8 1x10 whatever you want to use! so, by using a 1x6 start at the bottom and use another 1x6 as a spacer and then next board and go to the top/ This allows wind to blow threw your walls and that will dry your wood forever

Happy Sunday Jasmine and Crystal. I have been watching you for the last year and you convinced me to subscribe. I have a lot of respect for how you tackle as much of your labour projects as possible. Yes you can tape and mud. Professional drywallers do it everyday and have all the tricks of the trade. Tapers each have their own methods of mixing mud. All the best in your endeavour.

Ha!!! You two can handle anything! Drywall is easy if you have enough muscle to hold the panels up. It takes patience and thinking every step of the way. I prefer the mesh tape over the paper tape. I’ve done just like Jazmine, patching holes where I had electrical work after buying a house that had been remodeled and they left the old style fuse box and I wanted to put a breaker box in so that meant braking through the sheet rock in a few places. You girls can do anything you choose to do simply because your intelligence tells you to research and plan what you want to do. You girls ROCK!!!🙏✌🏼🫶🏻 Much love from Alabama!

What a fun video! I'm reminded of the time I did a drywall ceiling...all by myself. I used my head, too, with the help of a couple of 2 x 4s screwed together to form a "T," and tall enough to hold up the sheets of drywall while I did the screwing. 🙂
