It was established well before the draft that Drake Maye was a rough prospect. He has natural talent, size, athleticism, and a strong arm. He lacks several things as well. Accuracy, timing, reading defenses etc. It's up to the Patriots to develop the kid and everyone knew that ahead of time as he is simply not a finished product at this time.

Going into the draft, I viewed Drake Maye as a boom or bust prospect. As a Patriots fan, I hoped the team would trade down from three to build the rest of the team before taking a quarterback. They needed so much more than just a quarterback. (Mac Jones was made the scapegoat for all the Patriots problems in 2023, but it wasn't all him. No, I'm not saying Mac was blameless, as he made his share of mistakes.) Last season the Patriots had a terrible offensive line and receivers that couldn't separate. Remember that the Patriots signed Jacoby Brissett as a free agent. He will mentor Maye and likely start at QB until Maye is ready. No reason to rush Maye into starting. The offensive line is still a huge question mark, especially since there is no left tackle on the roster. NO, Caedan Wallace (the third-round pick) is not a left tackle.
@Nikhil-gq6wx
@Nikhil-gq6wx 18 дней назад
@Mikerophone As a pats fan I think a good QB elevates his teams more than anything. Who was Cooper Kupp before Matthew Stafford stepped in. Also the Texans had literally no weapons when CJ stroud stepped in. Stefan Diggs did not even reach superstar status before he had a viable qb step in like Kirk Cousins. Yeah the pats did Mac no favors with Matt Patricia hiring, but Mac’s noodle arm did our receivers and our offense no favors either. 2. Drake Maye’s situation is not bad. He is playing across a top 5 defense when healthy. Also the patriots really crushed the draft by getting Jalen Polk and Javon Baker and Jaheim Bell as weapons and some new O line players to protect him. Also another good part of Drake Maye’s situation is that the pats coaching staff and front office is brand new so they have the patience to develop Maye since they are not on the hot seat

Patriots Receice: 2025 #16 overall pick (assuming they're a mid tier team) and a 6th round pick Giants Receive: #3 overall pick. I think a big reason he could be an upgrade to Mac is he won’t have the fear Mac had been playing with ingrained in him yet. Still might happen since they decided to take a Qb first instead of building up a stronger offense, but that’s just the rebuild philosophy i subscribe to the most. Situation is key. CJ Stroud likely would’ve been even better if he came into a really good situation. Drake is just gonna have to fight for his life for a season or two before they can really get good results.

What exactly has Jerod Mayo done as a coach to say that he has done a good job? If you don't want to label Drake May as a bust because he hasn't played a game, the same should go the same for Jerod Mayo. He hasn't coached a single game in the NFL. However, the fact remains the mistake Pats made prior to the draft. You didn't NEED to get rid of Mac Jones and get back peanuts when you still had him on a rookie deal. You could have traded all those picks that Vikings had to rebuild your team, while still have Mac Jones at QB. Perhaps get a stud OL and WR. Or drafted Marvin Harrison Jr., a can't miss WR. If Mac Jones still doesn't pan out, you would get another high pick to get your QB of the future. What can't miss qualities does Drake May have? Mac Jones has a better ceiling as a rookie than Drake May has, even if Mac was a rookie. Now, Mac already has 2 years experience in reading NFL defense and film study. You will need to start over with Drake May. Only problem Mac has is that he has lost confidence in his OL, which you could have solved by drafting 2 solid OL in a talented depth class. Once you drafted Drake May, just who are the players you surrounded him with? Any WRs or RBs that scare you? Any top 5 players at their position? It will probably be the same type of WRs that can't get separation.

Build a better foundation, start Brissett with an improved roster, and let Rattler marinade for a year or two, and if he doesn't work out, be able to draft a QB in 2025 or 2026 with a better foundation for a young QB then. That said, I like the idea of Maye sitting at first so let him grow into the role, which Mac Jones never got the luxury of.

Glad we didn't trade down for "alright" draft compensation. Let's calm down about Drake not being good or being good, it's literally just rookie camp. I'm not expecting a guy who had footwork and throwing mechanic issues to turn into the next Tom Brady/Patrick Mahomes type of player in one practice. The rumor that the Giants would trade their 2025 first round pick in addition to switching the 6th pick for the 3rd pick in the 2024 pick is baloney. The Giants would have traded for the Pats' third pick if they could steal it. However, the Giants want to win in 2024, and if they did not want to win in 2024 they would not have signed Drew Lock. and they would not have traded for Brian Burns. Only wishful thinkers thought the Giants would have traded high draft picks for an unknown like Drake Maye.

Intuition is significant. Any job interviewer knows if this is the guy or gal in 30 seconds. On the same scale, seeing Maybe glitch, seeing him doing everything with his legs except the right thing, seeing him go through his throws in painful full slow motion, oh no, how stupid could Mayo be?

Too soon to tell. Give the young guy mid-way through his 2nd season. Even rookies who have success in year one, usually it takes 2 consecutive seasons to be viewed as a good QB. Defenses always adjust. QBs have to continuously adjust too.

Yet Penix was deemed a great prospect NFL ready but because had 3 major injuries. He isn't nor will he better than Maye. But he had a ton of game experience under his belt, accurate, strong arm and can read defenses. These pundits and scouts are so biased. It should come down to game film and what the players have done. Period.

The Patriots are incapable of developing a rookie QB. It takes the right GM, HC, OC, QB and OL coaches, plus the right offensive teammates. Look at the coaching and offensive personnel that developed Love, Purdy, Burrow, Mahomes and Allen. Herbert and CJ Stroud are outliers, immediately performing without that level of support, but better support than the current Patriots. Over the next two years Herbert will flourish as Harbaugh puts the coaching and player personnel in place.

Literally they planned this early on when they signed Brissett and are being patient about Maye and are in no rush to throw him out there unless he’s shown he’s light years better than Brissett in training camp. They want to develop him they want to make him the best he can be before we kill his confidence like Mac like a Zach Wilson. Study reads study progressions nfl game planning continue to perfect his mechanics. He’s 21 years old if they fix the few minor things to improve with him and continue to build this offense which I think they had a great start with this years draft. Polk and Baker are 2 guys that fit his best targets in college they have a great catch radius and if his throws are off they’re able to fight for the ball and bring it in bailing him out. Yeah the line is the big question no doubt on that but if they fall into the top 10 for the draft next year there’s the dude of LSU there’s the dude from Texas they can draft and they’ve got their career left tackle. Patriots have silently done great for a team no one wanted to come to this offseason, brought back their key guys and got guys to build and grow with their QB. It’s up to the new coaching staff to help make him the best he can be and if they succeed he’s gonna have a great career.

Mayo is tempering the expectations. Better play it safe. He might want to keep Maye the whole year on the bench. What better way than keep saying, he is not ready and there is a lot to work on. Everyone would know that there is truth behind that and will help managing the push when we will be 2-11 to change Brissett to Maye.

Why are people making a big deal out of this? Everybody knew Drake was a project and needs to sit for a year or 2. Jarod Mayo literally said this before they even drafted him as well. He only has 2 years of starting experience from college and is the youngest QB in the draft lol. The best thing for Drake is to sit for a year and everybody knows this. But if the media is going to make a big deal out of simple statements and put him under a microscope how good is that for his development? Brissett is the 2024 starter, talk about Drake Maye in 2025 when hes actually expected to take over lol.

Any time that a franchise bypasses a haul of draft picks to settle on one particular player, you have to be concerned, because that is literally putting all your eggs in one basket. Having said that, it is always going to be 50/50 at BEST whether a highly drafted prospect pans out. If Maye is a "competent" NFL QB, and nothing more this is still a bad pick. If he turns into an incompetent washout, it is a horrendously bad pick for leaving 3 Number One picks on the table to draft him. Unless Maye turns into a top 10 (or top 5) NFL QB, this is lose/lose and lose again for the Patriots.

I watched the tape of Maye skipping comebacks and putting open dwing passes in the dirt. How anyone thinks he's more than a project QB is beyond me. Not saying he can't be become good but his tape is bad but no one wants to say it for some reason.

@@codylasik1380 we was wild on his pro day throws compared to Penix who was throwing lasers in 30mph wind... game tape can be deceptive (still should never short arm comebacks but whatever maybe the wideout stretched the route too far, I dunno) but your pro day is scripted and made to show your best and he didn't. If you like Joe Flacco levels of ball placement then I guess he's going to be a HoFer.

I have never understood why teams spend a high 1st round drart pick on a qb, only to watch them spend all season buried in the grass or injured on the sidelines because their oline absolutely sucked !! How the hell is ANY qb going to be real successful if they are on their back or running for their lives all game, especially a rookie. Then people call them a "bust" At least if Williams sucks in Chicago, no one can say the organization didn't put him in a position to succeed. But I feel bad for some of these guys.

Jacoby Brissett likely will be the starter, with Drake Maye sitting for a year to develop the skills to be a starter. (Mahomes and Love sat behind starters their first year in the NFL, and it definitely paid off.) Maye was always a prospect that would need to work on his fundamentals, starting with his messy footwork. Clemson, Florida State and Miami are the ACC schools with good, respected football programs. UNC, along with Duke, are basketball powerhouse programs.

Even at the time I knew the class of 2021 was HIGHLY overrated but I am fully 100% sure of this class. I think the top 4 QB's will be great quarterbacks at the very least and maybe even 5. Zach Wilson and Justin Fields were not very good in 2021 and I never had any faith in either of them. I was also concerned by Trey Lance. This class FEELS real.

As a pats fan I'm not worried, the patriots aren't going to be a winning team this season, Jacoby is gonna be the starter so maye can develop. As long as AVP stays as the oc for the pats for at least 3 seasons then drake maye should be a great qb and get the pats back to contention

When is the last time the Patriots got a draft hall for first a pick. The pats are known for trading down and acquiring more pics .The one time we got a whole slew of first on pics we don't do it. I've said it from the start this was stupid. So what if Drake may turns out to be good. There are holes line is bad the d and the O line is bad. Had so many holes three first on pics would have help that situation. The coach just did what the fans and the New England media wanted. And I think that was a big mistake. There were other serviceable QB's in the draft. They should have traded the damn pic.

I wouldn't even have drafted a QB in the top rounds this year_ I would have went all out on OL, WR, & RB, and Work on developing Zappe & Rourke behind Brissett while the Offense is built....THEN see what we got, and maybe get a top round QB in the 25 or 26 Draft_ I would have picked a QB in maybe the 6th round to toss them in the competition mix this offseason, but I say build the supporting cast 1st_ But whats done is done_ I just hope that #10 Jersey doesn't turn out to be 'The Mac Jones curse' in the future

starting drake over jacoby shows little football knowledge. jacoby with these weapons is better simply because he can read offenses and has experiences with facing MULTIPLE COORDINATORS. He's well coached, consistent, and over performs. He played well for Cleveland, Indy, and NE. He was consistent and showed he's smart. He has familiarity with Mayo and other coaches who were former players. Drake only needs to see pre season and late game appearances on blowouts.

Josh Allen had similar issues during and after the draft. Was arguably the worst QB his first couple of years. I think Drake will need similar amount of time and support to fully develop. He doesn't have physical limitations and has shown mental toughness and ability to fight through adversity in college. Unlike Mac Jones Maye's issues can be fixed and improved upon season to season.

As a patriots fan I’m not concerned(yet). Like u said the guy hasn’t even been a patriot for a month and this is coming from someone who would’ve rather had MHJ but i think it’s way to early to call him a bust and definitely to early to say we made the wrong decision, the guy hasn’t even played in preseason yet😂😂😂😂. I won’t even be mad if he doesn’t start until after like week 10, the patriots aren’t gonna be good again this year so it would be better for him to sit behind Brissett as he’s already been here and it’ll give more time for Maye to improve which he obviously needs and i speak for every pats fan when i say we don’t want Drake Maye to get Mac Jonesd. I don’t need him to be CJ Stroud or Tom Brady, just be above average and put the right ppl around him to be a contending team in the next 3-5 years don’t rush him out there.

Few quarterbacks are successful with poor offensive lines.and crappy receivers. I remember watching the Giants of the 1960s who were a classic example of this. Fran Tarkington was running for his life with almost no one who could catch the ball and hold on to it. The only exceptions being Joe Morrison and Aaron Thomas , who passed away this week.
