There Are No Original Movies For The New Generation - Rant!

I remember growing up with Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Robocop and a ton of other original films. Looking at all the movies coming out today, it would seem that new generations of kids don't really have that. Everything coming out of Hollywood now appears to be a remake, sequel or reboot. Where are the original family movies!

No one even checked to see if I bought a ticket the last time I went to the theater. I just walked right through the front door and took a seat. It's like the entire industry has given up all pretense that this is a viable business model.

So many people just buy online beforehand to reserve the seat they want. And the people who sneak in will do that anyways. Honestly it may be cheaper to just not pay the one staff to check tickets. With AMC A-List (and similar memberships from other chains), it’s just one monthly payment for basically as many movies as you want to see.

I agree with your assessment. My personal and kind of extreme opinion is that the inflation of Hollywood budgets is a bubble that may need to pop. My hope would be that big production studios would need to restructure and sell assets. Smaller filmmaking startups would have a chance to attempt to create entertainment without the cushion of the current system. The unfortunately aspect of this is the loss of livelihoods for staff, actors, crew members, and more.
@jonfreeman9682
@jonfreeman9682 4 месяца назад
They spend way too much to make movies. Look at Barbie and Oppenheimer which were made on relatively smaller budgets the became hits but most Hollywood movies cost $200 million and up. Honestly not sure why they cost so much. And that's just the production budget.

They're all coming out on streaming services and because there's so many different ones to choose from, everyone's watching something different and it's not just effecting kids. People just don't talk about the same movies/tv shows around the water cooler like they used to. Would be really nice to see them do something like close off Stranger Things with a movie that comes out in the theater. Even if it came out on Netflix at the same time people would talk about it and it would become something for the modern era to look back on.

Inside Out 2 frustrates me the more I think about it because the plot doesn’t make any sense. You’re telling me that they introduce 4 new emotions and the plot isn’t that they need to learn to coexist to make sure Riley is a healthy Teenager? (When keep in mind they showed that Anger, Fear and Disgust can’t do the job on their own) And now Anxiety, Ennui, Envy and Embarrassment are kicking them out because “Riley needs more sophisticated emotions and doesn’t need you anymore”? They are literally just retreading the same ground where the new emotions are going to realize “oh no, we actually need them for Riley to be who she is and actually we can mix with the original emotions to truly give Riley the “sophisticated emotions” she needs”. You can’t tell me that someone in the writing room realized that and either didn’t say anything, or tried to say something and was silenced because Disney/Pixar thinks their audience is stupid -_-

What about Laika, Adam? They are my favorite animation company, and every single film they make is 100 percent original, and 100 percent stop motion. Since 2009 they have released Coraline, Paranorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. Yes, obviously some are better than others, but Kubo and the Two Strings is a genuine masterpiece, and it is definitely iconic and timeless. Their new movie, Wildwood, comes out next year, and hopefully that will be another masterpiece.

I remember Tim Poole saying something a few months ago, no matter what you think of his politics, I thought he had a point of saying that social and smartphones getting bigger in the early 2010s really stopped movies, shows, music, fashion and other things from growing or creating new things. Everything became about living off the past. Pretty much everything that Gen-Z or now Gen-Alpha are fans of were around before they were born. Things have gotten so damn lame; we are in the worst era for movies and especially music.

You’re so right about that assessment about modern day cinema Adam! With all the reboots, remakes, sequels, and prequels clearly everything is being both rehashed and half assed at the same time. Even for us who are boomers or millennials we obviously have practically nothing to offer the children who are 5-10 or even 13 years old looking back on what’s been out these past ten to twenty years and asking “What about us!? We want quality too!”. I truly believe that Hollywood is having a severe meltdown on the verge of collapsing and the entertainment industry is actually dying due to a lack of creativity along with pushing politics and reinforcing “the message” in almost every single movie at this point. This is exactly why I’ve resorted to everything that is nostalgic from my childhood from movies to tv shows to video games. All i can say is that it’s a damn shame that it’s come to this and i sincerely hope that Hollywood will put an end to all of this and start making new and inspiring quality content again much sooner rather than later. Thank you so much for your time and have a great day!

Original movies bomb WAY more often. The only movies people watch en masse are reboots and sequel/prequels. Look at the top grossing movies over the last few years. This year, Planet of the Apes 4. Last year Avatar sequel followed by Top Gun sequel. People cry about something then almost never back it up when an original film comes out. Part of it is because studios don't put any marketing behind original movies because they sense that they will bomb. People don't even like daring sequels because they don't follow the same tired equation. The same thing is happening with music too.

I remember though when the Disney channel was making original movies that you could watch at home. Like Smart House, Zenon, Quints, Motocrossed, and Halloweentown to name a few. The main problem is people aren’t really accepting when it comes to new things they aren’t familiar with and instead of going to learn what it is like Gunns new Authority movie, people will gravitate to hate saying “nobody knows these characters it’s gonna flop” there’s always gotta be an excuse for everything 😬

I think we’re seeing studios take fewer risks with genres where the theatrical experience is considered dispensable. Family films are the toughest to market because of cost benefit analysis. Families can achieve the most similar experience at a significantly lower cost by streaming. We’ve seen a similar thing happen to female dominated genres for decades now as tv broadcasters felt this was their most valued demographic. The evolution to streaming hasn’t changed that. Other genres like thrillers are enjoying a resurgence in a more serialized format which has reduced the demand for thrillers playing in a theater. Comedies are unique in that the genre has actually experienced a decline in popularity which may have to do with them becoming too inoffensive. Franchise fatigue is concerning because audiences voting with their dollars have proved that these type of films are the only ones people show up to watch in the theatre. I do think the problems with Hollywood are mostly self inflicted but where you’ll find disagreement is on the question on when this shift started happening. I think it’s been decades in the making.

Something I didn't hear Adam bring up that I think is worth the comparison between growing up around the 90s to now is that there were still plenty of sequels and franchises coming out especially around the time of home video releases. Back to the Future, Home Alone, and Jurassic Park became bland franchises despite solid original movies. Disney was notorious for their home video sequels. Heck, even the Batman movies are technically reboots. Maybe they just didn't seem so dominant though with home videos and with less movies being released in theaters back in the day?

You forgot E.T. The age of creativity in the 80s and 90s is not coming back. Next time you're in Target or Wal-Mart, go down the action figure aisle. A large percentage of it are all the same franchises and IPs from the 80s and 90s. A lot of it has the exact same packaging or cards, trying to profit off the retro audience. The only new brands are some anime and a few more recent games. It is a small area compared to everything else. It's been this way for the last decade. You have more faith than I do that it will come back. Anytime they try, these original films never have the lasting cultural impact of the others. It's all about what makes money and nostalgia sells so when Hollywood is done milking the 80s and 90s, get ready for the last originals from the 2000s to get made. That number is nothing compared to the 80s and 90s but they'll figure out something.

Hopefully there will be a boomerang to bring some sort of innocent, silly stuff with originality for the kids. I am so glad I am not a kid in the stupidity. I still have hope.

Look, I'm going to be real chief. Kids nowadays are better off reading actual books, because at least authors of kids' , teen and young adult books are wayyyy more creative than movies for kids/teens nowadays. And then if they're lucky, there will be one or several movie adaptation(s) of one of the books and one might even not suck. But screen writing for kids/teens is just dead. It's all about franchises that already sell and that might continue to do so like exploiting the chicken that lays golden eggs to death.

3:03 when you start to list the movies that were cultural icons of the time, half of those friggin franchises are still going 😭 Also, there are many facets as to why the movie industry is the way it is now, but one main gripe I have is the runtime. Why does every movie have to be over 2 hours? The commercials and the trailers plus the movie turns out to be nearly 3 1/2 hours, if it’s a Scorsese or Tarantino movie, it’s over 4. I remember in the 90s many movies that were a tight 90 minutes and that is perfect, 30 minutes to set up, 30 minutes of drama and 30 minutes of conclusion.

It is not just nostalgia. The older movies took chances. Look at Goonies. Out of nowhere goofy fun entertainment never had a sequel. Just a random fun movie. I miss that. Not all were great but they took chances.

One hundred percent agree with you! I have lots of GREAT Ideas for new generations of productions but Hollywood wants to keep lying their asses off and rinse and repeat the same bs over and over again! Seriously, tons of fun and great storylines I’ve presented many of them all and crickets from the apes only still in tinsel town because they’re actually cowards and scared of the whole truth and stories of the world’s actual history records here. Great as always thanks for the laughs regardless of us all being in hell still here on this ancient archaic af planet still being run by the ancient apes only here. Js!

There is original films out there. The problem is that they get overshadowed by IP films because people choose to watch IP movies that they'd hate just to hate on them instead of paying attention to original films. And people's excuse for not watching original films is i kNoW nOthiNg aBouT iT but isn't that the point of original films?
@Missjunebugfreak

You're right. A lot of people are too lazy to seek out films that aren't IP-related. Plenty of good original films but you have to actively seek them out.

Yeah it's not like they're a bunch of original horror movies coming out. It's always been all the same crap. I remember a few yrs ago everyone hated boss baby and emoji movie, I'd take these movies over bland original movies. Let's just have good movies, who cares if it's original or not. Jurassic park, jaws, the exorcist, godfather were all based on books. Very rarely are films original ideas. Most of the time they're based on books

There is, but are indie. Everything new is online now. Just look at Digital Circus or Helluva. But yeah, mainstream reflects todays society. Great for old people due to nostalgia and how good things were for them back then, but nothing for the youth for a better future.

I see original film all the time. I never get this conversation. There are a bunch of remakes but there are like 60%-75% original filmsat the theater... you all just don't go to see it. People only go to something in mass when it's something there familiar with. Also there are "literally" thousands of original films/series each year; in theaters, streaming, tv, and cable.... You All Just Don't Watch because.... (whatever you all's reason). You can watch something NEW Everyday if you wanted.

My man, the 90s had a lot of iconic and original movies, Pulp Fiction, True Lies, True Romance, A Few Good Men, Unforgiven and so on. Even the 2000s had a good run. It went to sh@t in the early 2010s.
