@@dr.jetheller6256 I don't remember so I will definitely have to cheak them out. I do think that "mental illness " is still very misunderstood to this day. There is a very good possiblity that a lot of these "symptoms" is a thinning of a Vail but people's minds can't understand or process it. Ending up in a psychiatric ward or the hospital. Or they can and other people just label it as "crazy" doing the same thing. Which is really sad. That is why you won't hear of people experiences with a "unknown" because they will either be labeled crazy or taken to be a lab rat.

@salty sailor lol if someone says hey hear voices, does not mean it's in their head. Could be as simple as not seeing who spoke. If your in the woods by yourself and you hear voices from somewhere I would not jump to conclusions. Also we don't know a fraction about the universe or different realities. Disembodied voice does not automatically mean your crazy.

I wish he asked "mark" if he is his friend at the end. Honestly the story kept showing a great friendship bond between them, not to mention the protagonist showed great respect for mark the whole time, listening to his stories and generally being a good friend.... not all creepypastas need to end badly.

While I kind of agree with you, because I loved their dynamic, the ending was fairly Lovecraftian, and the rest of the story hinted at that. If you know anything about Lovecraftian horror, it's that the more humans know, the worse off we are. That there are things which are best left unknown... Given that, if you so choose, you could interpret what Mark did in the end as a sign of friendship, since he kept Zach from coming back to learn more.

I took it more like Mark belongs in the "natural supernatural " of beings as those things go..But Humans are trying to force a unnatural evolution playing around with things that they don't understand and couldn't possible understand, forcing monstrosities to exist beyond the natural flow of this reality. He's angry at the stupidity of humans and what they *do *to the unknown.

Pretty nice story :) Like someone else said, the ending was a bit abrupt, turning into a mimic right away from just the question (that also had no build up whatsoever). Also, how is the obvious question not "so, do you still want company?" Like, he's been friendly all along, you've been hanging out for a long time, he hasn't hurt you yet. See if he wants to be a friend, learn more. He could obviously kill you whenever he wanted to, and probably still can even if you try to stay away from the forest. Ask if you're welcome, leave on amicable terms. He's not the scary nightmare thingie in the forest.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse a bit, littering the comment section with my two cents, but I actually disagree. While the story could have gone that way, and there was something of a tonal shift which I do find problem with, the whole story hinted at "there are some things which you don't want the answer to", and it was pretty Lovecraftian in that way. In Lovecraftian horror, learning more is actually a very bad thing (if you wish to question my assessment of what it is to be Lovecraftian, I invite you to read the first two paragraphs of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu", which is almost inarguably the most well known of his stories). Honestly I adore Lovecraftian horror, so this was a surprising breath of fresh air in some ways, though it didn't manage to tick all the boxes of course.

@@FrankLeeWillis Fair points, except there's nothing Eldritch about the old man. But then, this doesn't read very Lovecraftian to me. The thing about knowing more in Lovecraftian horror is also, sure, it might be bad, but the protagonist is never in a position where knowing less is an option. Stopping, walking away, deciding that they know enough? That doesn't, and can't happen. If this were a Lovecraftian tale (and my reading is that it isn't) then believing he can just walk away scot-free is just hubris, it'll come back to bite him. He's on the inside now and there's no turning back, especially not after obeying and spreading the word of this creature, trying to lift the veil for everyone.

@@Ellanion Oooh, you actually make a good point about the fact that he was able to walk away!! Then again, Mark went off about how humans think they're safe, but aren't, so who's to say he was truly able to? Though, I'll contest your point the protagonist in Lovecraftian horror is never in a position in which knowing less is an option. It's curiosity which drives them forward, which is hubris in and of itself! The dude in Innsmouth? Was curious about his roots. In Cthulhu? Was curious about a statuette, etc. etc. It's just that, by the time they realize to stop, it's too late for that. Though it didn't tick all of the Lovecraftian boxes, I think that it did tick some important ones, and my favorite ones to boot, so I'm a little biased!. Honestly though, you made some really good points!

I really like your idea. It can really be about any war. I have been thinking about a story about Finnish winter war against Russia. Something killing soldiers from both sides, making it seem like they died of frostbite/froze to death during the night. A soldier who is local in the area realizes that something is off; a man who was dressed similarly but farther from the warmth was fine, someone sleeping next to the victim was fine. Victims were dressed warmly enough and were in enough shelter....

When I was younger in my backyard there are woods and I went back there as usual to play and hangout and I heard this voice coming from deeper in the woods not from my house shouting my name not too loud but loud enough for me to hear not too far away casually like we were friends just calling out to each other but I called out in confusion “hello” and he just kept calling my name. He sounded like a young adult male but no one I know. I ran back home really scared asking my family if they had been outside calling me and no one said they were. I still get goosebumps from thinking of it because I never knew what it was

Honestly, “Mark’s” description of the scene in the woods between the guys in suits before executing the victim in doctor’s scrubs sounds a lot like the events that happen in the creepypasta story “Blacksite 7”, which Creeps has also narrated. Like shockingly similar, right down to 2 of the figures arguing right before one draws a gun and shoots scrubs guy in the head.

This was good. Had to stop 3 times and come back to finish it but I did it! I saw a mimic one time in its human form, it was a sight to behold. He passed a human to those that was in my group, but because my son and I had just talked about them, I was still open and receiving information from the other side when I saw him. I didn’t lock eyes with him, I avoided his stare as we gave him directions to where he was acting like he was going! Haven’t seen that again!!

tbh that twist came out of nowhere reminds me of the disney twist villain trope ->- not enough build up and not enough clues actually barely any clues he just says do u know about mimic? and the question is basically thrown out just like it was thrown in pretty uneventful really but good job in the narration it sounds great as usual!

I like mark. I would go back and say hi. Despite him being a mimic, he hadn't done anything to harm him. I'd at least go back and keep talking with him. He seems decent enough for an eldrich abomination.

Disappointed by the ending. But I enjoyed most of it. Was kinda hoping for, "I still see Mark from time to time. He continues to put on the act for my sake" Something like that. It kinda feels like most creepy pastas devolve into clichés at the end.
