There is one day in the year when Hasidic Jews PARTY

What happens when Hasidic Jews take one day of the year to drink and party? A community in which abstinence from partying culture is tantamount takes a day to deliberately change things up. This is my first ever vlog of this day. It's peak Purim, at the end of the Jewish holiday, when many men are drunk and the entire neighborhood sheds its mask, so to speak. What's underneath?
I used to dislike this part of Purim because I didn't like the role I was slated to play, in the women's section. I enjoy this role as a documentarian immensely, but it doesn't escape me that while the day is joyous, it isn't for everyone. This vlog represents my vantage point, as someone who has been gingerly exploring videography in this community. However, there is much left unsaid about the perspectives around gender and alcohol on this festive day. Perhaps for another time.
The song in this video is a popular Purim song ‘Nye Zhuritze Chloptzi’ which has Russian and Yiddish lyrics.
Here’s a traditional version of the song:
• Nye Zhuritze Chloptzi
Here’s the Chaim Shloime Mayos cover I used in this video:
• וודקה I חיים שלמה מאיע...
Thanks for watching! Make sure to leave a comment with your thoughts.

What do you all think of the diversity of political views expressed here through flags and costumes? - Israeli flags - armband that says "Zionism is not Judaism" - "Trump 2024"

Thank you Frieda for explaining so beautifully the meaning behind the tradition of Purim. I cannot comment on the Presidential Election as I am not an American citizen. I’ve seen a number of videos of Haredim leaders(I hope I’ve got that title right)speaking out about Zionism, its basis in Scripture, and its conflation with Judaism so I’m not surprised by the armband “Zionism is not Judaism”. Seeing people, who have the same traditions but are of different political beliefs coming to together to rejoice as a community is wonderful, Shalom Frieda, regards, Mary.

Thank you Zelde! It was an unusual moment for me. I don’t know what the future holds for me as a filmmaker of this community, I never know when I’ll say something that people will decide is not to their liking and then maybe I won’t be so welcome, but this Purim was purely joyous welcome surprise. It happened the perfect woman , the woman of my dreams . How in embarrassing what do I say , I’m a field agent supervisor for the FBI I froze , I couldn’t find a word to say . Her and friends returning to the bank it was about 200 yards away. They were cutting across the grass , the side walks were elevated . I walk rapidly behind her , I could see bronze skin and smell her perfume, it was the most wonderful flowers you have ever smelt, I could see her Black hair , glistening like Silk from the sun. . I was heading towards the Bank . I got closer and closer , the I pulled the front wheel up , best wheelie that I have ever done. The Doors were glass they didn’t brake. I turned to the left. I know Purim is about acting opposite on your usual behaviour( like not being able to tell Mordecai and Haman apart and also rejoicing on the triumph of not being decimated, also how Esther was kind of hiding the part of her being Jewish, kind of like a disguise.

Frieda, thank you. As always a wonderful video, so well done in so many ways as only you could do. While I think it’s interesting and entertaining to see the contrast of how religious Jewish communities (and some not so religious) celebrate the holiday of Purim, of course there is much more to say. While for some, it seems to be largely a time when it is permitted to let loose and drink until drunk, if you asked almost anyone (probably before they have drank the alcohol) what is the real meaning of Purim, and why is alcohol a part? It is not simply a way to “celebrate” as most people outside the communities would likely believe. I think it’s important to mention, and to ask leaders of communities, why alcohol is a part of Purim, what the reasons are. It’s not made up, like most things in the Jewish world, but for very specific (and religious) reasons. It is certainly a time of paradox, and I think it’s important to share that context, which is unknown to most people “outside”, Jews included, as most non orthodox Jews would not know or celebrate in this way, if they do at all. Also, it’s worth noting that Jews getting drunk does not mean that wives, daughters, or girls are sitting )or dancing, with or like the men (and young men, boys) dressing up, drinking, or getting drunk. There are ways women and girls (depends on age) celebrate Purim, but it is indeed different, and there is no girl or woman getting “drunk”, maybe some a little inebriated, but never obviously so, never immodest, and keep in mind the women have even more responsibility more responsibility through Purim, the same responsibilities with children and their complete care, as well as all of the cooking, etc, plus needing to get to shul multiple of times to hear (obligated on Purim like the men) the reading of the megilla uninterrupted. Having children of different ages participating in a variety of ways, including the specific mitzvahs of the holiday like the specific seudas (festive meals)they prepare, and the mishloach manot (specific types of food gifts) prepared and during Purim given to neighbors by families, children, adults, as well as money- tzedaka given for Purim, both locally and beyond. The roles of men and women on Purim is very different. While there is a great deal of drinking among men that remains festive, and has some boundaries still observed, there are questions and differences from community to community about the appropriate ages for drinking and getting drunk on this holiday, and certainly what is done differently by boys and men, and women and girls. It is also worth noting that while the men are most visible and outwardly expressive, this story is very much a beloved and inspiring story of a Jewish woman who changes the world. A woman who while enslaved in some respects, and must remain “hidden” and modest, is also wise, courageous, outspoken, and powerful. She is a hero (the central hero) to women, girls, and men and boys, in this story. The other central character is the evil character of Haman, and this is the day that everything turns upside down (metaphorically), and the possibility for what we may not see as possible becomes a possibility. Evil is destroyed. There is a hope on Purim, that the evils that remain in the world are defeated, and that what is right, good, and true wins. It’s a very unique holiday in different ways for men and women, and while the women may only be seen, caring for children, their families, and standing to the side as the men dance, are vocal, and party, the women love this holiday too, in many ways and feel the connection to the deeply wise, powerful, modest, hidden Esther.

Is it? I never heard that about Amish folks. I didn’t grow up around alcohol except on Purim but a lot has changed. There are no bars and nightlife culture but people drink at weddings and other festive occasions.

@zimrasawyer1881 6 месяцев назад
In my experience, it is very rare since alcohol isn't expressly forbidden and is used in mostly ritual or happy occasions, people get drunk but no one seeks out drinking just to drink. And most of the time if the parents catch their young men drinking too much they nip it in the bud.

I came across something awhile back regarding the book of Esther and was wondering what your thoughts on this were.. I've always been intrigued by comparative mythology ( I'm not saying that's what we're dealing with here is mythology only that I think that studying how things are the same is equally as important as studying their differences.. According to the Talmud, The Megillat Esther became the last of the 24 books of the Hebrew Bible to be canonized by the Sages of the Great Assembly. it was a redaction by the Great Assembly of an original text by Mordecai. It is usually dated to the 4th century BCE.... However, in the 6th Century BCE, when the Hebrews were captive in Babylon. The Hebrews, naturally, adopted many Babylonian customs. The Babylonian calendar was easily accepted and is still used for religious observances. Their New Year celebration consisted of a ten-day carnival, during which the people drank, feasted, and staged processions. The king, during this festival, was stripped of his insignia and humiliated to remind him that he ruled by the grace of Ishtar, the Great Goddess. ( I find this reminiscent of saturnalia where slaves became the masters and the masters slaves) The name "Esther" probably derives from the name of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar or from the Persian word cognate with the English word "star" (implying an association with Ishtar)... So in other words, Ishtar becomes Esther and the god marduk becomes Mordecai according to the theory.. Do you think there is any validity to this at all? There are numerous examples of this type of similar themes and word cognates used throughout this Hebrew Bible.. for example Noah and the numerous much older flood myths of sumeria, Babylon and akkad.. Moses having a similar narrative to sargon of akkad ( both were placed in baskets and sent down a river to bee found, adopted and eventually rising to Great prominence) and the story of Samson sharing many of the same themes as the Greek Hercules... Personally I think it speaks to the deep allegorical and symbolic value of these stories but I'm curious what you think as someone who was raised with very specific beliefs. Do you think there's any validity or value to any of these parallels? Are they ever discussed or explained? I'm sorry to be so long winded but I rarely get an opportunity to ask someone with such a unique perspective . thanks 🙏
@Israellover101
@Israellover101 6 месяцев назад
If my opinion matters at all.... I'm an Orthodox Jew who grew up learning the Torah (still am😊) To simply answer we do not believe that, we grow up being taught the ways of the Torah from a very young age and that is how we live the rest of life. Anything beyond that and outside Torah boundaries are not our beliefs and contradict the Torah.
@4everseekingwisdom690
@4everseekingwisdom690 6 месяцев назад
@Israellover101 yes I completely understand and I greatly respect anyone who devotes themselves so fervently to Ha Shem. I'm just wondering what the teaching is regarding stories that have parallels? I'm in no way denying the validity of scripture, I see it as if these be more than mere coincidences then it speaks to the incredible wisdom and importance of what's written that it was recognized as such by many people. This is what drives my question not denying but affirming it. I'm assuming you mean things like this just aren't generally talked about as focus is on the scripture itself?

Your expert thoughts would be welcome on the ways in which these people were transgressive of their own normal standards. It seems based on the video that people: drank more alcohol and were accepting of such alcohol use dressed somewhat differently but still within very constrained limits were less earnest and serious than normal. However, all other norms remained fully intact, such as those on inter gendered mixing, wearing clothes such as jeans, etc. Is that a correct understanding ? For example, did you detect any marijuana usage ? Was there any use of bawdy or obscene language ?
