It's actually mind blowing how so few cars are actually reliable out of warranty....this channel has stopped me getting myself into trouble by buying used German car...such good info and lots of laughs! Well done!!!
There's loads of great German cars, you just gotta know which ones to pick, like a F20 1-series for example is great, some engines have some niggles but it's pretty rare.
@@kristoffer3000 actually problems are not pretty rare. Particularly on the diesel 2 litre engines in the F20, the timing chain fails quite often, I personally know 2 people that had issues with that engine, after I told them not to buy it. But the petrol engines from the 120i and bigger are quite good.
@@Blondul11 They fixed a lot of the timing chain issues so it's much rarer in F-series cars than it was in E-series cars, they're really not bad engines at all. Also all the petrol engines are good, not just the 120i and up.
@@kristoffer3000 tell that to my mate with a F20 120d, and my mate with the same engine in an X3. Both had catastrophic timing chain failures. BMW only really fixed these issues in the LCI of F20.
I don't trust Mat Watson. He once reviewed a car that I was very familiar with and he said a lot of things that weren't true. So now I wonder what else he's saying about other cars that I'm not familiar with. This channel is one of the best, for both facts and entertainment
I had the pleasure to swop cars with a mate for a week a little while ago. He took my 2016 BMW F80 M3 and I got his 2017 X5M50D. Same chassis as the one in this video. It’s a absolute beast of a machine! I never ever liked the idea of a SUV. But I must admit, if I ever had to get one it would be something like that one. How to describe the X5M50D in one world….I would have to say : “Capable”. It can really do everything. That’s the pro of these kinds of cars. But that’s also the con at the same time. Because even though it’s so capable in every department, it doesn’t really excel in any area. It’s comfy, yes, spacious, yes, fast enough yes, luxurious enough, absolutely, good-looking enough, yes, driving dynamics & handling, very decent. But there are so many cars out there that can do the same job, or better, and do it using less fuel, that are lighter and thus use less consumables like fuel, brakes, tyres etc. So imo, even though I respect the X5 massively, especially as a BMW fan of 30yrs and BMW-owner of 10yrs plus, I would rather have something like a 3-or-5-series touring to be honest. Does the same job, for much less money, and running costs are cheaper too. Win-win. Once again thanks for the top review Adam. Informative, entertaining, great visuals, and SUPER funny too😅Great stuff, keep it up👍 And as always, my rating for this review is a solid: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 😃From a loyal follower in sunny South Africa🇿🇦☀️
I own one and can confirm that this car is an absolute beast. People that want to hate SUV's clearly haven`t owned and lived with a high performance SUV. This is to me the perfect compromise for people that do not care about the show off factor and track racing but rather care about the high performance engine and the drive compared with the practicability. Unless you are planning to take this to the track (which you won`t because you are buying an SUV) this will give you all the handling and performance you need in real life, and then some. PRO`s: Surprisingly great handling for an SUV. Great comfort and high driving position which is very good for overtaking and going in and out of the car in tight parking spots. Fuel consumption on highway driving is very good and you can tow anything. Bose sound system is great. CON`s: Very stiff ride as it is a proper M car with stiff suspension and low profile tyres. Bad fuel consumption for city driving. Tyres is very expensive (325mm wide in rear) but there are cheaper alternatives (hankook) and I would say I change tyres about every 18-20 months on average (obviously depends on mileage and what type of driving you do). I bought the car 2 years old and it had depreciated 50% due to above average mileage. Since this is has only depreciated another 30% in my 5 1/2 years of ownership. ISSUES: To start with I`ve had absolutely none of the issues mentioned in the video expect the oil issue which I solve by always having 1L of oil in the back of the car that I fill immediately when the oil light comes on. I had a 5 year warranty and extended it by 2 years. Year 4 I had an issue with the tyre sensors that took several attempts to fix. Year 5 it had an issue with the main computer/control unit which also took a while to solve. Year 6 it had a cracked cylinder and I got a brand new engine installed. Year 7 the rear right air suspension got replaced. All this, including brakes, got covered by warranty. It has been flawless for 1 1/2 year since the engine was replaced and since the warranty ended and the first 25k service is soon coming up. Considering all the new X5M/X6M/M6/M5 (and actually now the Range Rover Sport Supercharged) all have versions of the same engine I would say this is a lot of bang for your buck compared to those new and considerably more expensive cars. I was selling at the end of the extended warranty but with the new engine I will keep it for many more years.
I have this car and hk is standard. The b&o was around a 10k upgrade. The hk sounds really good so i could just imagine the b&o but for 10k i dnt think its worth it. I went with the heating package. Wheel and rear heated seats.
Thoroughly agree that these things are ticking time bombs. Took a used one for a test drive, got about 50 metres down the road when the engine light came on and it limped back to the dealer who shrugged his shoulders and showed me a Q7.
I think a lot of people are wrong in terms of reliability on these bmws, yes previous X5 had horrible reliability, but this particular X5m is pretty decent with reliability, they just use more gasoline, and the X6m is a better looking coupe.
The cornering and braking are amazing, and you wonder why it can be that good, then a short time later you need to pay for new tyres and brakes, and all of a sudden the mystique is ruined, it simply relies on expensive and fast wearing rubber and brakes.
I've got a 2016. The OEM tires are a joke when it comes to wear. There are much cheaper all season tires for 1/3 the price that have gotten good reviews. The OEM pads also suck. The PowerStop Z23 pads are way better!
Was it worth it tho? I wanted a trackhawk but not willing to give Jeep anything close to 90k and this seems like a good substitute and only 33k used here in Texas....but it's still a bwm😮💨 I have a 07 335i so giving more money to another bmw never seems like a safe bet especially looking to make the x5m a "family" car. It's between this and a 2014+ 650i
I wouldn't buy a brand new one , never mind a second hand one , even if I were a millionaire. You also didn't mention turbo failures due to the turbos sitting in the V of the engine.
I'm sure it'd make me smirk devilishly during a test drive. But the repair cost when something goes wrong past warranty.... not worth it for me. I'm happy w/my 4M Audi Q7 3.0T. Only major repair/replacement were hydraulic engine mounts recently done - drive feel is like being in a new car
A wank pheasant sh*t box. Pig nose grill cars are very hit & miss & this one a cousin of mine owned & the gearbox died before it hit 100,000km despite being well treated & they "fixed" it & traded it towards a Porsche Cayenne, which has done nearly 250,000km & travelled from Coffs Harbour to Perth & has never had an issue.
This and the Mercedes and Audi equivalent are basically un-ownable at this point. Too heavy, too complicated and too expensive when it breaks. The ONLY solution is to buy a used Porsche Cayenne, GTS or Turbo if you must have a V8. Still expensive to run but due to Porsche in Australia having an extendable warranty for up to 15 years it can be managed, you know what your in for! So if you want German Monster SUV's with power, comfort, tech and handling. Head to Stuttgart my good friends.
I found a 2015 model for 25k and its in excellent condition with only 80,000 miles. It has a defuser and 22in wheels and lowering springs. I am in love, i think I'm going to buy it this week
I have a 2016 X5M. It looks and drives like new due to regular servicing. I've had the rear airbags go, but I have the extended warranty so that repair was fully covered, as was a turbo line that was leaking. No rattles or anything within the interior. She does burn through tires, but that has to do with my driving habits. I do not regret the purchase.
These videos keep getting better and better - not sure how that was possible! Still patiently waiting for the F22 series M240i! Looking forward to that 😅
My uncle has a 2018 one, and drives it really hard but also maintains it and services it very well. It has the same kms as this one. The oil thing is true, that it needs a lot of oil, he tops the oil many times in between services but I think the issue only matters if you ignore the low oil warning. The only problem he had was a broken suspension air bag leading to the car sagging, but he ordered an OEM part from Germany and had it fixed, didn't cost as much. Other than that didn't have any issues. It drives so well and the thing that surprised me more than how fast it was how good the brakes are. Love it when I get the chance to drive it and it sounds so good straight from the factory and even better with a few tasteful mods.
Better off going for the X5 50I, still got the 4.4L V8 and a hell of a lot cheaper to buy and run. At 445hp it's got more power than you will ever need, plus it's a more comfortable drive with less stiffer suspension.
You guys are so good that I watch your reviews for cars I don't even care about because I know I'll still be entertained. At this point I even look forward to your safety rundowns. Keep up the amazing work, guys.
I couldn’t justify to spend for the X5M so I just settled with X5 M50i. The M50i is even more than enough for public roads. And the engine is running too hot in summer so I can’t imagine how hot the S63 is..
So fantastic the best driving dynamics but as they age becomes like Russian roulette if it goes bang drop your pant get ready for good old rodgering without ky as it will financially eff you
Spot on with your review. I came close to purchasing the X5M but being somewhat cautious of ongoing running costs I opted for the X5 M50d, triple turbo diesel is a great alternative with very similar specs without exposing yourself to the inevitable costs of fueling and fixing the V8. Highly recommend M50d as the go-to variant of the X5.
Totally agree re the X6/X6M, hideous! Ditto Mercs equivalent, thouggh the BMW wins the ugly stakes hands down. Just look up the price of Tyres for the X5M (or any X5 for that matter), and they go through them at a ridiculous rate!
My oldies have had 3 BMWs since the early 2000s 318i, 325i and now a 2008 X5 3ltr diesel since new, most that’s ever gone wrong was a few switches here and there no word of a lie. The X5 has 150 thousand kilometres on it and it’s never missed a beat in 15yrs
Quite an eye opening video to be completely honest as was expecting this would be a bit more reliable than this. I couldn't help notice that the X5 M has quite a lot of similarities in terms of problems to the Alabama Trashcan you guys reviewed previously especially since both are made in the states which doesn't help. The way you reacted to the picture of the X6's rear end makes me wonder if it is classified as a form of psychological torture lol 😆. Congrats guys on hitting 120k subscribers. Just goes to show that your hard work is paying off. Brilliant video as always guys and have a good weekend. Look forward to next week's videos as always 👍.
Terrific review .... and I agree the ergonomics in BMWs is just stunning. The X5 is a master stroke. In 2000, at BMW car club Oktoberfest in New Hampshire I got to drive the X5 at its introduction and was immediately blown away. I'm glad that hasn't changed dramatically. 50 year BMW Enthusiast here... and still find no more appealing marque. However BMW has certainly come up with some doozies in the aesthetic Department! Just perusing my local dealer I saw a beautiful M3 dark blue with saddle interior, 3 pedal, that caught my interest. But that front end grill, ugh. Didn't really need it anyway as I am very happy with my lo mi E46 330ci vert and '72 pristine 2002. Don't need no high-tech uglies! I rented a 5 series 4 years ago and the drive was awesome! I had a blast with the paddle shifters. When I got home I started looking for a used one it was that good. Then I suddenly realized it was nothing to look at. Come on BMW get it together.
Great review and yes I use to own a M5 but when I got my X5M I was and still in love will always keep one at the house getting ready to upgrade to the new one this year.
I have a F85 since new, 2018. This review is spot on. Never missed a service and never missed a beat. Much better than to drive than AMG GLE63, similar to Cayenne Turbo, but 50k cheaper.
Buy the 50i instead. It's still plenty quick and has all of the features but it rides way better and won't have all the rattles and squeaks because it rides better and won't have been driven as hard. It will also be cheaper.
Save a whack of money and buy the six cylinder diesel X5 ! Tremendous torque making it blisteringly fast, fiftys mpg and best resale values of any 4x4. BMW's best kept secret !
I have a 2017 CPO with extended 3rd party warranty and maintenance plan I will say it has been pretty good. Anyone thinking about getting one just get all the plans that will protect you to have a piece of mind and enjoy it I get topped off with one quart of oil ever 3 to 4 months not bad at all. looking for a 2020 M5 next.
True. But I've been lucky there or had a different experience. Could never afford a new one...but inspite of the high costs of repairs off n on its been worth it. Always have fingers crossed though 😉
Crazy fast SUVs are amazing fun as they appear to defy physics. If I had the budget, I'd take the X5M over the X6M. The X6M defeats the purpose of having an SUV.
Have an X5M from 2017. Bought it with 52000km and now it has 80000km. Immediately after Purchase, the dynamic Stabilizer at the front was leaking. The rear Silencer rattled and was replaced. Everything was under warranty. Otherwise there have been no further problems so far
As others have said the X5 m50i is likely the better overall choice. That being said, if you go test drive an X5M, you may end up buying it regardless of what your logical brain should be telling you. I made that mistake at the Porsche dealer... I have taken both the X5 M50i and the X5M out for lengthy test drives, both are amazing SUV's. The X5M is noticeably stiffer, and not the best on bad roads. The M50i still has a lot of V8 grunt, but it doesn't look as good as the X5M and it doesn't make quite the same exhaust noises. I think its worth owning an X5M at least once to experience it. My neighbor has one and I can always hear it start! Goes through rear tires like crazy though but its been reliable for them.
Had one of these. Drove up to 100k miles. What a great car. Mine was almost full optioned. Full individual build. It all depends on how often you do your fluid changes and such. It was fantastic minus the MPG which was the reason I sold it. Also BOSE?????? I’m pretty you could only get them with Harmon/Kardon or Bang & Olufson (best option).
A real flex is buying one of these and properly maintaining it, engine failures and all. You buy a luxury car and the first time you carry it to th shop you have heart failure, you probably shouldnt have one
Hey guys, I really love your channel and I been a subscriber for a long time, it's a fantastic channel, what I don't understand is why there aren't more subscribers, you keep the reviews to the point and are an honest opinion on cars that we can realistic afford, as the cost of living now, the dream gets further away, so I really do hope you get more subscribers, you guys deserve this to be huge. I'll keep my fingers crossed and will share.
Can't talk about the X5M but have owned 3 X5 3.0d's. The last one did 170k without anything but scheduled maintenance. The 3.0 turbo diesel had plenty of torque, plenty of room, plenty of storage and averaged 8.0 litres/100km fuel burn which is awesome for a car it's size. Currently own a new 2020 X5 3.0d which has been flawless. Personally, I think the 4.4 litre twin turbo is overkill.
For all those soy boys out there saying these are ticking time bombs… exscuse me, this is one of the finest engines every created in the world of v8s. This engine is no different than any other performance oriented vehicle, especially this one. Sure it has its quirks, but high performance race engines such as this one was built to endure extreme stress and as a result, just like a nascar requires loads of service, so doesn’t this. It drinks oil, burns through tires, when tuned it might break a drive shaft, and banks solenoids will need to be replaced regularly, but if you have the knowledge and understanding of the care and time you need to put into this engine then this engine will never disappoint. If you like cheap inexpensive reliable even after 20 years with no oil change type reliable, don’t buy this car. This is a true driving machine, not just a car for point A-B.
These are made in the USA so of course you are going to have reliability issues, just like the US built MB ML's ( except from to 2011 to 2015 ) and GLE's. German built MB ML's from 2011 to 2015 seem to have NO issues at all. Reliability differences between US and Germany built cars is outstanding. Moral of the story is that it is better to buy a less "prestige" European car, like a VW or a Skoda than ANY US built car.
First you point out that it's made in America and then you say that it rattles a lot for a European car. It's not a European car, it's an American car, and that's why X5s have always developed rattles early on.
