Stripped threads on old cars just go hand and hand don't they...These thermostat threads did not want to budge. It lead to me doing something I didn't really want to do but hey, I've got to solve this coolant leak one way or another.
Ended up taking out the thermostat housing with the stripped threads and the water pipe and replacing both pieces. Check it out in the episode.

When I had no choice but to run open thermostat, I usually just remove the inner spring part out and still use the outer ring with the rubber gasket. Just letting you guys know just Incase in the future you notice you need extra cooling at the track. Use pliers and pry out the spring next time

Crazy man. I guess that really is common for people to not run thermostats. Maybe they are sealing up the thermostat housing with some gasket maker or something cause mine leaked hard with nothing there lol. Glad to hear you got yours all back together.

It really is lol. It's nice having the d15b8/b7 and the z6 in my garage to use parts off of. When putting the water pipe back on it actually really helped to see the back of another block and see how the pipe needs to wiggle through to the water pump inlet.

No need to knock off bolts off...next time just get a smaller size socket and hammer it into the stripped head. ...works great i do it all the time...if the smaller socket dont fit just strip the bolt a bit more until u feel a semi fit so itll fit semi tight where u can hammer it in tight to a tight fit.

Question: The water pipe with the o-rings, Do they just push into the housing and hold together with the o-ring sealing it? Like what I'm asking is, no fasteners/bolts holding the pipe to the housing?? Thanks!
@RefineMovement
@RefineMovement Год назад
That's right, the o ring is all that holds it. It's tight with a new o-ring.

next time when the head of a bolt strips take a smaller socket, any one that you can ''sacrifice'' and hammer it on the stripped bolts and it should work same principal for the '' I lost my wheel lock key'' method for thieves lol

My water outlet cover seems to be stuck to the engine. I assume it's the gasket that melted. How do I safely remove the cover without damaging the surface of the engine? fyi.. I have a replacement cover because my cover cracked. Also what kind of gasket maker do you use?

@RefineMovement 6 лет назад
I mean that’s pretty much what this video is about. I took the whole water pipe off the back of the engine block which included the thermostat housing. Mine had stripped 10mm bolts that wouldn’t budge.
@michaelnicolas9070
@michaelnicolas9070 6 лет назад
Sorry didn't explained myself correctly I want to know how you remove the water pipe housing you didn't show the process of removing I want to know how to take it off what did you use or do to take it off and by the way thanks for replying back
@RefineMovement
@RefineMovement 6 лет назад
I see. There are two more 10 mm bolts on the side of the thermostat housing that hold it and the water pipe to the back of the engine block. You should be able to find a diagram of that in a service manual or a helms I would think. Remove those two bolts and then the connecting coolant lines. There’s three hoses if I remember right. They are obvious and you will see them, they are connected right to the pipe. Once those are off then you will be able to just pull the water pipe and thermostat housing off the block. It’s a bit tricky because you have to wiggle the water pipe around a bit to clear the black emissions box on the back of the block but have patience and you’ll get it. I’d replace the o rings that are on both sides of the water pipe then if you’ve never replaced them. Might as well while you are there and since your removing them from their happy place haha. Then put your new housing on with new bolts that you can actually turn. Thermostat and all that then put it all back together. I know it’s hard to understand or be confident in what you are doing by someone just typing it out for you but take your time and look around in that area first and familiarize yourself with all the pieces. Makes it less scary when you go to do the work. Good luck to you man

D series engines older then 1996 have 2 bolts and they come off you can see one of the bolts in the thumbnail. If your d series is 1996 or newer the don’t have the bolts and they don’t come off.

Np dude, they are WAY better than vice grips, because pipe wrenches are made to grab on round things, i have a super small pipe wrench and its the best thing ever. You can also look at something called "strip bolt socket" they are made for removing strip bolts :)

Man this was hard to watch .. Super cringey unnecessary work I'm sure the bolts were fine until you stripped them another question why would you swap out a single cam with another single cam even if it is vtec seems like a major waste of time and money
@RefineMovement
@RefineMovement 6 лет назад
The bolts were already stripped when I got there. I tried a few different methods including a tool specific to removing stripped bolts, vice grips, and cutting a slice in the bolt and trying to knock it free. This is the way I saw to get it done and it worked. Sure, I didn't want to do all that but thats the path I chose and again, it worked. I swapped out the single cam for another single cam because that's what I wanted to do. I'm still learning to drive this thing on track and so I'm not looking for more speed at the moment. Still working on braking, heel toe, balancing the car through the corner and getting back on the throttle to pull the car out of the corner. It's for sure not a waste of time in my eyes and it's not always about the money for me anyway.

@@RefineMovement that's what I'm talking bout brotha! That Andrew making all us by the name of Andrew like jerks that obviously aren't caught up with your series. You had everything for the single cam and you upgraded engines as is anyways. Keep smashing on it man. You got the right direction for practice in the techniques you mentioned. Especially being "in throttle" throughout the entire turn enabling better rotation of your tires this creates better traction as well as weight transfer. Sounds like your talking with Bryn on track days @ the firm
