Coming back from burnout as an ICU nurse has been difficult and a journey in self love and patience. Was a marathon finisher in 2018 and by the end of 2021 was bedridden with depression and PTSD from my job. Depression is no joke, the journey has been very hard and at times painful but I am getting there. Hoping to do a full marathon again in 2023.

I was an avid runner in my teens and twenties and gave it up through my thirties. Heading into my 40’s I’ve started running again and have been focusing on just enjoying it. Things are much harder at this age but I still enjoy it so much. Your advice in this video is amazing and I’m going to keep this in mind when I’m thinking about giving up again!

You give me faith that I'll soon be able to go out for a run! Glad to see you're both feeling better, it'll be two weeks tomorrow that I got Covid. I still have the cough and stomach ache and will be sure to take it easy when I get back out there! 😀

Good video Ben and very timely. Like you, I had a back injury which limited my running capabilities. Not 100% sure how my back injury was caused (I have my hunches) but I had to and continue to work through it. Just as I felt as I was turning a corner on the injury I got covid as well. It was humbling to go from a 5K time I was proud of (and making gains on) to running 2 minutes slower and feeling like I was dying during it. For me, it has taken over a month (and I don't think I had a very serious case of it) and I am still not where I was. I am being patient and practice what you preach and I am making gains again (not as fast as I like however). I am glad you've gotten over the worst of it and just take your time getting back to running and stressing over your times. Love your advice and wisdom!

You two are the best! I love seeing new uploads every week and this week I could relate having had covid recently. I’m training for my first half marathon found post covid my breathing is much more obvious while running, I sound out of breath after km 😞

Timing! I've been bedridden with Covid for last few days. On the plus side I've been catching up on all the Sweat Elite videos I've been missing in the last few months and have watched all of Phily Bowden videos back to back. I first had it in March 2020 and went straight back to a gradual build up after the 14 day isolation period. I ran my fastest 5k and half marathon and ran my longest distance (33k) within the succeeding 6 months. I was much sicker last time so hopefully I won't have been set back as much now. Good luck with both your recoveries.

Love your channel. I dealt with a mysterious injury a few years back that sidelined me for a whole year. Long story short, after MANY health practitioners and therapists they couldn't figure out what is the root cause was. I still deal with pain, however I learned quite a bit about how to take care of myself, prevent future injury, and enjoy running even more because of the journey.

Great video , Ben, especially as I am returning from Covid at the same time as you. Started off with 5k walks with jogging down the hills, and today was my 1st slow 10km jog keeping the heart under 130. I really liked the bit about life balance as I am a life-coach from materials called Man of Impact and Significant Woman - it's great stuff for focusing on your purpose in life!

When we had the couple of 40c days her last week in England I skipped a run. Crappy sleep and well over 20c at 6am just wasn't worth it. Picked up as usual couple days later after a good sleep. Totally the right decision for long term. I struggled enough those 2 days without putting extra load on myself. Its a journey after all. 🙂

First point is all too right. I was training for a half marathon this year, came down with COVID and had to take two weeks off. Went back, tried to simply resume where I was, and swiftly gave myself an ITB strain which forced me out of training for an additional four weeks. I could have gone faster by going slower.

Love the channel and videos. Hope you are feeling better and getting back to 100%. You and Mary are very inspirational and I am learning a lot from your advice. I am training for my first half marathon in November. I am 47 and have never run a race longer than a 10k. I am using Polar's Running Program for my training plan, which is all HR based. I have enjoyed it thus far and I don't feel like the runs are making me overly fatigued. I do wonder on race day what I should do: focus on keeping my HR in green for a while, and let it drift into yellow and red zones as race progresses. Or should I focus on trying to complete race by a specific time (with splits) on race day? I have watched a lot of videos and read materials (including from Polar) on using HR for training runs and prep for races, but I have not seen any guidance on what to do on race day. Use HR? Pace? Can you help? Again, sincerely hope you feel 100% soon.

I was able to massively PB a 6 miler and a 5k four and nine weeks after having Covid. Key ingredient: take it slow and easy. I was on the bike trainer going REALLY easy once I was out of bed (was in bed for two days), and then took the running very very slow and easy coming back. Thankfully, all my symptoms during Covid were flu-like (body aches and super tired), nothing in my chest, but I did not want it to go there. You can't be too careful with this. Need to ease back in.

Just started a running journey nearly 2 months ago 8th of june, to kickstart 17th of September I give it a go a marathon, after 1 month training I done 21k 2:28 , 10k 55:28. I can say life is busy 1 kid and a chef job late finish but I can still manage to run 35-50k a week only evening every 2nd day after 9pm when everyone is sleeping. Questions longest rubn so far 30k in 3:26 it was rough. my aim for the first marathon is sub 5 hours and gently build from there is it possible ? I tend to run with tickr chest hr monitor, easy run zone 2 , tempo run zone 3 50%+/zone 2 10km or more per run. The running is the only exercise when I can turn my head completely off soo good. I find the channel calming and very useful kind of friendly structured approach. Keep on going
@ThisMessyHappy
@ThisMessyHappy 2 года назад
Hey Daniel, thanks so much for the kind words and really best of luck on your journey. Can I offer you some advice that I hope you’re able to take on board? I’m worried about the volume you’ve introduced so quickly. And the distances you’re running. My goal for this channel is that everyone is inspired to run for life. To do this, we need to take our time. It took me years to build to 50km per week and 21km runs. My fear is that, short term, your body will manage but longer term you’ll start to get overuse injuries and it will knock you out of running. The muscles will be compensating at the moment but it might not be long until one gives way because it can’t cope any more. I didn’t do a 3 hour run until 6 years in to my serious training. Granted I’m an extreme case but I’d say you’d need minimum of 6 months to safely get to that level without any effects down the road. Please don’t see this as criticism. I want to help and want you to stay running. I’m just very worries that this is not a long term sustainable approach. Hope that helps 😊

@@ThisMessyHappy You was never been brighter just ran 21k on terrain grass/hard stoned running paths. It was amazing about 250 people with various distance. I planned 42k but in the half my knees said its enough its very weird even when breathing, legs , shoes , kit is on check one thing what you cannot train as fast as you can the knees. I am glad I stopped and I listened, keep making videos they are awesome.

How long for covid recovery is everyone’s experience? I’m day 8, still a decent red line. 10km in 4 weeks which is usually no worries but awaiting first few runs to assess ☺️

I posted above and started my 5km walk on day 8 which seemed ok, did the same on day 9, 10 and my first slow long jog today day 11. But thankfully, I only had the cough for 3-4 days for which I am so grateful to God
@ThisMessyHappy
@ThisMessyHappy 2 года назад
Mary and I tested positive for 9 days and the first few runs after that were very very modest. Started with a 3km then 5km and then 8km. All extremely easy and controlled heart rate. Attempting a 10km tomorrow but again, super easy. Won’t be doing any intensity until September I reckon. But then, when you’re training for a 100km race you don’t need to 😂 rest up and take your time 😊

Please please use professional advice (physio) for overuse injury....For the injured part of the body (the victim), there is the part of the body that creates the issue (the villain). The villain is always lurking somewhere quite unexpected and logic defying... Attending to the victim without dealing with the villain is relatively pointless....
