having a haibike trekking 4, I cannot stress how important a pannier rack is... so much better than a rucksack and if you need to carrier more you can add a rucksack. I use a brae bag on mine which is really easy to get on and off.

True. It took me years to realise how much nicer panniers were. Hardly ever cycle with a rucksack now (only mountain biking).

Hi; I am disabled - I have little or no sense of balance, so need a trike; I am also pretty weak as I also suffer from chronic fatigue 9amongst many other issues), and live in a hilly area. I have found it impossible to find a suitable electrically assisted trike that is road legal in the UK and doesnt cost £5,000; it would be great if the Everything Electric team could do a guide for people like me; who would love to keep riding, but are finding equipment info impossible to find/decipher.
@andyleighton3616
@andyleighton3616 2 месяца назад
As you probably know trikes are expensive anyway (not so many people want them), electric even more so. However I think there are some that are lower priced than 5k. A quick google suggests that you will probably end up paying about 2-3k for an upright trike - recumbents are more expensive. So there does seem to be some trikes out there that would fit your needs. As you say you are in a hilly area - definitely look for mid-drive motors.

Pity you don't give the motor power battery power and pricing range for each bike. It's very "all over the place" funnily enough. Simples to insert on eth screen each time a bike pops up. Motor 250W - 500Wh battery - 36V - Range 27 - MSRP between A & B for example. This video only really shows 5 different sorts of E-Bikes for different uses.

Have any of these bike's got regenerative braking to back up the normally very poor bike brakes especially if they re trying to stop a larger load or a machine that is going faster?
@nottelling41
@nottelling41 2 месяца назад
I've owned many good ebikes but none like these which are more for extreme cases or for style. Most people just need a boring bike with mudguards, disk brakes, flat handlebars and a rear rack, and a high torque motor with a torque sensor priced less than £1500. Folding bikes need to be carried often so must be light and quick to fold so electric battery etc. may negate the whole nature of the commuter folder. Just accept that strong ebikes with big batteries will be heavy.

I'm curious- what's the price range of a decent consumer bicycle, unpowered, in the UK? Not the fancy racing bikes. I'm curious how this compares to a Walmart bike here in the Central USA , to give some numerical perspective.
@xxwookey
@xxwookey 2 месяца назад
A decent bike is about £350. You can pay down to about £150 but that's not what I'd call 'decent'. It will work, but it will be heavy, none of the bits will last that long, you'll get punctures and brakes won't be very good etc. Spend 350+ if you possibly can and get something decent (or go second-hand. you can get a £1000 bike for £400 with nice things like hub gears)

Have you ever looked at e-assisted velomobiles? I have 2 velomobiles, 1 with e-assist and 1 without. My non-assisted one is actually slightly faster because or better aerodynamics. The e-assist is just handy when going uphill or pulling away from lights and means that its average speed is typically higher, except on a very flat route. When I bought the battery I thought I would need a big one because velomobiles are relatively heavy (25-35 Kg) so I bought the biggest I could (19.2Ah) but I have done an 80 mile ride and still had half the battery left so range is similar to some electric cars. The motor is only needed very rarely and the aerodynamics (Cd of only 0.08 on my non-assisted one) means that once you get up to speed (20mph+ even with luggage onboard) it is very easy to maintain it.

As a car driver and cyclist I want to see delivery ebikes require the riders to pass a DVLA driving test and mandatory insurance (unless they already have to and I'm just unaware) as they are definitely a danger for other road users. Of course they are not the only ones as plenty of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are also a menace. All the best everyone, even the delivery ebike folk. 😉

I've stopped even considering eBikes because of pneumatic tyres. Ebikes tech has changed bikes quite a bit but their tyres have not. In my area I was getting constant punctures and I will never fix a punctured tyre again. I use an eScooter at the moment with non pneumatic tyres so I don't know why they can't do that with eBikes.

@xxwookey
@xxwookey 2 месяца назад
You can put a solid tyre on your bike if you like but the ride is never as nice. Less efficient too but I guess that doesn;t really matter for an e-bike. But if you buy decent tyres punctures are very rare. I've been using Marathons for years now (or cityjet on 26"/590 wheels). I get a puncture maybe once every 3 years.
@SlayerEddyTV
@SlayerEddyTV 2 месяца назад
@@xxwookey I have tried all those options. So called puncture proof tyres were useless. Some bike makers get branded tyres so I will have to wait until they get the types of tyre I was looking for. Tyre manufacturers like Bridgestone and others have been showing concepts like “Air Free Concept” for years that they said were coming but still haven't...that is what I am waiting for because like I said I will never fix a pucture tyre ever again and nor will I need to with my eScooter. The same tech will be used in other vehicles like cars but again they still haven't arrived yet.
@xxwookey
@xxwookey 2 месяца назад
@@SlayerEddyTV No pneumatic tyre is 'puncture proof', but the good ones are really good. What are you doing with your bikes that is giving you such a problem? - cycling through a nail-supply trench or something? Like I say I can't remember when I last got a puncture, using Schwalbe Marathons. Might be 3 years ago, might be 5, and I do 3000km/yr. The Marathon Plus is even thougher than the Marathon. There are other good tyres too. Still, sounds like you are set on solid tyres. They do exist - just buy some. I don't expect manufacturers to start supplying them by default because they are just not as comfortable or efficient. For the same reason of efficiency cars are not going to be moving to airless tyres anytime soon either. I've had two car tyre punctures in the last 20 years/120,000 miles. Not really a huge problem.
@SlayerEddyTV
@SlayerEddyTV 2 месяца назад
@@xxwookey Nothing...just cycling in my area on cycle tracks. I'm ok with my eScooter for now but I do prefer cycling. I'm just not looking for a eBike with air tyres. It just seems like whenever I go through and underpass it is usually glass and other stuff that was getting me a puncture almost everytime I went out, I thought it was me just not clearing the tyre properly when I needed to repair it but no it was just sharp stuff everywhere I go. Nah not solid tyres, something like the NASA airless tyres made with the company called The Smart Tire Company. Plus I have a condition which means it is impossible for me to put pressure on my hands so I couldn't repair a tyre if I wanted to, so like I said I will never fix a air tyre again. It will be airless tyres or airless tyres, they are just taking longer than I thought to arrive.

I'm SO glad to see coverage of non-EVcar vehicles on the Everything Electric Show. But I look at this video with my own bias of what I want from an EV bike and still don't see it. Of course UK is severely nerfed in what a EV bike is allowed to be. So still DIYing my own bikes. @ScrapKing73
@ScrapKing73 2 месяца назад
Mid-drive e-bikes are at least twice as efficient as hub motor e-bikes. Which means much longer service life for the battery on a mid-drive, all other things being equal. Which means less e-waste. The gears act as a transmission for the motor on a mid-drive, whereas the hub motor is transmission-less. Which means the steeper the hill, the larger the cargo load, the heavier the rider, the worse the headwind, the better the mid-drive is over the hub motor. Combine that with most hub motors being pretty inexpensive and no-name, and hub motor e-bikes are an e-waste disaster and should not be promoted on environmental channels IMO.
@xxwookey
@xxwookey 2 месяца назад
Twice as efficient? Motors are motors and they are all pretty efficient. Pretty sure a hub motor is more than 50% efficient so there is no way a mid-drive can be twice as much as they are not more than 100% efficient. I've got a hub motor from 2007 that is still working so they aren't necessary an e-waste disaster either. Indeed, at leats the mountain-bike people have endless trouble with hub motors that only last 18 months and are very hard to get repaired so they _do_ have an e-waste problem. Mid motors _are_ technically better but the proprietary mounts/controls and batteries along with regular product churn is producing a lot of unrepairable stuff and whole bikes that have to be thrown away when only one bit of the electronics broke. At least hub motors are standard and can be swapped so I don't think this is anything like as one-sided as you make out.
@TheRybka30
@TheRybka30 Месяц назад
Hub motors allow for regenerative braking, therefore allowing a lighter and smaller battery to operate with the same range, depending on the condition. Smaller battery, less e-waste.
@ScrapKing73
@ScrapKing73 25 дней назад
@@TheRybka30 In theory, yes. In practice, no. The average hub motor bike weighs 20-30 lbs more than the average mid-drive bike, completely negating any efficiency advantage. Plus, we're talking about arresting hundreds of pounds of e-bike and rider, not thousands of pounds like an e-car, so the amount of potential regen is very small. Finally, what regen is done is generally dumped into the tiny e-bike battery so quickly that it ages the battery faster than ideal. So regen on e-bikes doesn't make sense, overall.
@ScrapKing73
@ScrapKing73 25 дней назад
@@xxwookey I took a mid-drive with a throttle and went up a hill with it in a bad gear, and the display was showing it drawing about 575 watts to do it. I did it again in a better gear and it was taking about 300 watts to do it. Had the hill been steeper, or the chosen gear combinations more/less optimal, I could have got an even greater disparity. On a mid-drive your gears act like a transmission for the motor. With a hub motor, the slower the wheel turns the less effective it will generally be at getting you up the hill. A mid-drive motor doesn't suffer this problem at all.
@ScrapKing73
@ScrapKing73 25 дней назад
@@xxwookey Hub motors aren't standard, they vary between geared and non-geared in broad terms, and then vary further within those categories when you get down to brass tacks. And beyond that, the problem is getting system-specific parts if the company goes out of business, or just loses interest in supporting old models. That could in theory happen with either hub motor or mid-drive, but in practical application it seems to happen a lot more with hub motor. Unless you're prepared to swap out 100% of the electric components if necessary, having a hub motor is not guarantee of repairability.
@ScrapKing73
@ScrapKing73 2 месяца назад
Not one of the five is a brand-name mid-drive model (eg. Shimano or Bosch motor). Which means not a one of them can be fully serviced in most bike shops. Which, if you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, isn’t great. And means many of these will end up as e-waste rather than being repaired, once something goes wrong that’s outside the skills of the owner or the willingness of a bike shop to make an attempt (despite a lack of readily available parts and service documentation for their electric systems). This is probably the only Everything Electric video I’ve hit “dislike” on. Ridiculous for a supposedly pro-environment channel. I know not everyone can afford a new brand name mid-drive e-bike, but not everyone can afford a heat pump or an electric car either. It doesn’t change the environmental calculation. To avoid as much e-waste as possible, I believe we should only be promoting e-bikes that can be fully serviced in most bike shops.
@xxwookey
@xxwookey 2 месяца назад
And how are totally proprietary, incompatible motors and batteries 'more serviceable' than standard, interchangeable kit? The lack of standards in motors is already a disaster if your primary concern is repairability. We agree that repairability is good, but the idea that 4 or 5 incompatible frame mounts and motor suppliers who won't even agree on a battery connector, or make new models compatible with the old mounts, is 'good' is ridiculous. Are you selling Bosch motors or something?

I am a keen bike rider who uses both electric and standard.....I am not lazy or unfit by any measure It depends on my needs of the day (work run, shopping, fitness etc....), as to what style of bike I grab at the time. I ride and enjoy it regardless.Your comment is a little misguided as it contradicts a number of people worldwide who are definitely not lazy etc. I also will say that bike snobs forget that if people ride a bike (any style), that is a good thing for health and environment (no pollution etc.).

@bradw8964 riding an ebike for a trip that could otherwise be just as well done by a bike is terrible for the environment- a waste of electricty. Just as using those bloody awful e-scooters instead of walking is a massively regressive step. Ebikes are, by and large, a marketing gimmick. UK cycling was booming, well before the rise of ebikes. The vast majority of the population don't need an ebike, a bike will serve them just as well, aside from the outliers I described. Like i said, they're a marketing invention.

@@ewanbent9028 if you can ride a 60k round trip to work every day on a normal bike in all weather without burning out, my hat comes off to you..... I beg to differ fully on your remarks as I feel you have completely misunderstood the nature of ebikes and the benefits they offer for a wide range of people with a wide range of needs. A traditional bike has evolved for a reason (as do cars etc). The style of comments you make smell of the same type of ofal that comes from the anti EV lobby groups who simply do not understand (by choice?) the real data that supports the benefits vs costs. Ebikes can and do reduce cars and petrol motorbikes.on the road- therefore less resources used (you can't argue an ebike uses the same amount of resources as a car or motorbike....surely?). Just a simple example of one resource debunking argument. The waste of resources and "just use your muscles" arguments are shallow, anti-chamge and baseless. Now, where did I park my horse.....?
