Hey there, I’m Jenna! A Canadian who has been living in Germany since 2014 and sharing my experiences ever since. 🇩🇪

That's because we ate them all first. Unfortunately there are only a few in zoos left, so no more delicious bear steaks, bear sausages, baked bear ham and last but not least curry bear sausage and döner bear with garlic sauce.

We've been here (in Leipzig - moved from the US) since last summer, and I have to agree with most of what you said. The beer and bread culture here is awesome, the ability to get around on public transport is great. We experienced the nudity thing the first time we went to a nearby lake. We knew about it so it wasn't a shock, and I think you describe it well - it's just not that big of a deal to anyone and it's just ignored by everyone around (I won't be joining in anytime soon, but I can appreciate that part of the culture). I'd say another thing that makes Germans special (at least in our experience) is how willing they are to help you out when you need it. We've been blessed so many times by our German friends as we've settled in. Such wonderful people!

That's all nice, but aren't there some other things? E.g. Germany has the highest density of opera houses per inhabitant of the whole world and one of the highest density of choirs (after Lithuania); In addition, decisive remnants of the fact that Germany was once the land of poets and thinkers and was also a leader in science are still preserved; nowhere in the world is so much classical music regularly heard as in Germany! Etc. This may not serve the majority of RU-vid users, but it is still a remarkable reality!

Karneval is not just one week in february haha Regularly its from the 11th of November until Aschermittwoch but with a small Christmas break. This "one week" starting on Weiberfastnacht is just the so called "Straßenkarneval" but the whole Karneval is way more than just this short part of having party on the street.

Go deep south to the Black Forest Area, German speaking Switzerland and around the Lake of Konstanz. There you will find the 'Alemannische 'Fasnet' which is totally different, but the idea is the same - get rid of the winter ;-) . you have to mention that nudity in public is not allowed everywhere - we have special "nudity zones" on lakes, rivers and the ocean. If you run half-naked or naked through a city you get company by the police and a ticket for being a public nuisance (Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses).

Hee hee hee true story, happened in the Harburg district of Hamburg, south shore of river Elbe: two guys from the music scene decided to "flitzen" (undress completely and then run through public space as fast as you can so no-one will catch you). They were caught and brought in by the police, to a station on the opposite side of the district. After their identity was confirmed, police released them, free to go home. Still nekkid, with no money on them to call a friend (where would you put your purse in your birthday suit? Also mobiles weren't a thing yet) their clothes still waiting for them (or hoping so) on the other side of the district, where their flats happened to be, too. A looooooong walk, suddenly...

Naked, yes. Half-naked? Idk, maybe I live in a too rural area, but I see people in, let's say very few clothes all the time during summer. There's this one neighbour - whenever I see him outside during summer I think 'can someone PLEASE give him a shirt?'... But also police isn't present here... in the last 12 years I've been living in this town, I've seen police about twice. At all.

Another channel mentioned: Lüften! I found that really funny and interesting, especially i thought EVERYONE is doing it doesnt matter where you are from... But we germans are really serious about it and we have no AC, so it makes a lot of sense... AND it is fresh air in your house/appartment it is healthy unless you are living directly on an Autobahn or main street in the middle of an city of course :) Nice video and YES these are typical german things!

For the train system bubble: The reason we complain so much about it is: It was better 30+ years ago, trains were punctual down to less than one minute off. Busses were punctual on the same level. There were always people at (medium+larger) train stations helping you with problems. We were on level with Swiss, Austria, japan and all other which are now so much better than the German DB. But then "privatization" trend kicked in. Privat-public partnership. Which means: Winning were privatized, but losses are still up to the country. Result: The quality has been going down, a lot, really a lot. So we complain 'cause many many many still remember how much better it once was in Germany.

Same with the health and education system. Were great once, now they're just going to seed. I'm usually not one to cry for the "good old times", but undiluted capitalism is not doing the populace any favours at this point.

DB is still completely owned by the German state. The winnings aren't going into private hands. There are still a lot of people at train stations helping people. And if you call ahead they'll wait specifically for you.

I am so glad you mentioned the bread and specifically the issues you'd had in Canada. Not uncommon at all. In most cases in US/Canada, they use excess amounts of yeast and flours with additives and preservatives, yes even in Canada. There are great quality flours out there but most US/Canada bakers are focused on high volume, not quality. What you have in Germany are artisan bakers, it's awesome. German bread volume and consumption means it does not need a lot of shelf life and regulations ensure the flours and ingredients are better quality than US/Canada. Canada is better, but lowers standards to open up to US product manufacturers. My wife ran a home bakery and followed traditional European artisan methods. We had many customers that thought they were gluten-sensitive, but after eating artisan bread and not having any issues, they loved it and became regulars. The flour with minimal additives and artisan methods produce a bread we can digest easier. You can freeze and thaw quality breads and reheat them for fresh bread when you want it. Thanks for your videos, they are nostalgia and educational. As the name gives away, I have German heritage, all my relatives live there; I have lived in Canada almost my whole life.

You pretty much summed it all up perfectly! ✊ My aunt is severely gluten intolerant in Canada … hives all over! But in germany she ate pasta, pizza, bread, pastries everyday with no issues! She actually brought some sacks of flour back to Canada with her 🤣🤣

I would not call all bakers in Germany artisan bakers. There are many chain bakeries that produce bread on a industrial scale with industrial methods.

@@FranziskaNagel445 yes but even huge chain Bakeries like Merzenich still use good quality basic ingredients and good recipes. The bread from said bakery is the best bought bread I've had. I've also been to the manufacturing plant in köln Niehl so I know what it looks like being made and have greater trust in their bread than that from other chain bakeries but I don't think they vary wildly.

@@jolioding_2253 You are right. My point was not that chain bakery bread is bad. I buy my bread from Badische Backstube and I am happy whith their bread. It was that the quality difference between US and german bread is not a result from artisan vs industrial baking but rather focusing on quality or mimizing costs and maximizing shelf life.

Hahaha, I liked it so much, when you say that Germans don’t care about what others think might relate to us running around nude - good conclusion! One special thing in Germany is also the textile-free Sauna. I went there once with a Californian friend and she was totally unprepared but handled it greatly. Since then, whenever foreign friends ask me to go with them to a wellness or spa bath, I always make sure that they know, we are not wearing clothes in the sauna and that it´s often a mixed sauna. Most of them are very excited first, but once they´re in it, they experience the same as you did: nobody cares and it helps to focus on people`s faces when entering ;-)

just to correct you a little: there are more than 3000 registered types of bread in germany. We even call our beer "liquid bread". So don't mess about bread with a german... Fun fact about moving: Germans do not move that often. On average 4,5 times in their life (the half time is important!) It's not rare to find people living for decades in the same apartment. But i cannot deny that WHEN we move we're usually quite organized. Even when a german saying means "3 times moved is like one time burnt down"...

Fun fact is, when you think you are safe somewhere on the other side from germany to go nackt swimming or stuff, you can be sure that when you come out of the water someone you know is waiting there for you and say "hi du machst hier auch urlaub und wie ist das wasser"

Since you mention moving ... note that some of the cardboard boxes used for that have the inscription UMZUGSTAG FEIERTAG ... like your moving day is a holiday, a celebration. I personally consider moving to be quite stressful and not what I'd love on a holiday, though.

Not everywhere, right. In many parts of northern and eastern Germany it is not or hardly celebrated. It is originally a Catholic custom, so it depends on the people living in the area. But in some evangelical areas they celebrate it too.

Carnaval.. IT is a catholic thing in the Netherlands. Carnaval is followed by a 40 day fast (Lent) till easter. Dutch carnaval.. they trow stuff of a car while Wearing a costume. They go home drunk enough to Piss in someone garden and like on the parked car they drove their bike into. I think everybody that does carnaval shoeld be cleaning the town for a week as well. And they must do the 40day fast as well. (Not a fan) Beer..hate IT. Whisky and wine. Trains.. so inconvenient. I drive a car. Watersports;) the Netherlands. We even have fun on Frozen water. The beach.. not into nudity. Not being nude myself, not like IT if someone else is. German Bread, good. Dutch Bread.. better. Northamerican Bread laste weeks on the counter i heard. Dutch Bread Will grow mold in a week. Skills for moving? We are to cheap to pay 4000 euro to a company do we have practised a lot. Kitchens are not to hard to put in.

5:37 The warm meal for supper/dinner makes me visualize the cowboys assembled around the fire for the night and getting their baked beans. Same for the settlers on the march. Only opportunity to really cook. Perhaps that's how that difference developed?

🤣 it’s so neat to see it from others point of view. I remember my first Abendbrot was in the hospital when I gave birth to my son and I was so confused! One slice of salami, one slice of cheese and one slice of very dark and dense brown bread. I think I cried 🤣🤣 … blaming it on the post-birth stress, but I remember thinking “do I have to pay for the real dinner? And no one informed me” … but then again, the lunches were incredible there! We even got cake for dessert at lunch! 🤣

Why you can't eat bread in North America is not because of Gluten. lt's because of the fermatation respectively the lag of fermatation. Good bread should ferment for at least 4 hours, but industrial bread ferments an hour or less

Yes, a lot of Germans are there own handymans in their own house. I have built my Ikea kitchen by myself und I even renewed the electricity in my old house. Some people like to do it, but the main reason is that handymans are very expensive because of the high taxes in Germany. Even if you are academic, you have to work 3 hours to get 1 handyman hour. And, there are no allrounder handymans in Germany. For every subject, you need a specialized one. Germany has got a big "Baumarkt" culture where you can buy all stuff you need to "do it youself". "Do it yourself" is an english expression which is directly used in Germany.

Hello 2 Million Views Baby! 🤣 Zur Freikörperkultur in hab ich noch etwas amüsantes zu erzählen: Wir waren vor langen Jahren in im Waldbad eines FKK-Vereins in Hamburg.. Wir, meine Frau, die Patentante meiner Tochter, mit meinem Patenkind, unsere Tochter und ich lagen, wie die Natur uns erschaffen hatte auf eines Decke, sonnten uns entspannt.. Plötzlich passierte uns von hinten ein, gleichfalls naktes Paar.. Der Mann drehte sich kurz um, lächelte erfreut und meinte, wie groß doch unsere Kinder schon geworden seien.. Wünschte einen schönen Tag und eilte mit seiner Frau davon.. Fru und Patentante schauten ihm irritiert hinterher.. Bis die Patentante lachend herausplatzte: "Himmer, das ist ja unserer Gynokologe" Woraufhin meine Frau nur lachend erwiderte, daß es ja nur fair sei, ihn auch mal nackt zu sehen! You are absolutely correct about the bread thing. The bread in the US is disgusting apart from what you get in some small town bakeries. Everytime i get home from a vacation i'm looking forward to finally get some fresh german Brötchen again.

I must agree on the bread and beer part, but other things.... Moving house for example is hell. We have a saying that goes "2 mal umziehen ist wie 1 mal abgebrannt." So I try to avoid it if ever possible. I live 12 years in my current apartment, and lived 27 years in the previous one. I think mostly people move because of a job, or if they get children and need a bigger place. And about the "going naked on Rügen, because nobody knows me there..." - good thing you are the only tourist who comes to Rügen... :)

Hallo Jenna, it is nice watching your Videos. Here some Background informations for you about Germany. 1. Das Reinheitsgebot für Bier. It was Witten in the middelage, to keep all rivers in those dass Clean, when Beer was brewed. Because Esch River in that time was a cloake with much dirt, dead animals and such Things in it. Not tasty. 2. Nudity: in the east German beaches there are 3 areas you can visit: a) with swimming clothes, the textile beach; b) without any clothes, the nudity beach; c) the Natural beach, you can bevthere ad you Like, with or without clothes. You only have to Clean Up your little area of beach by yourself. Mostly, Natural beaches are a little far away from the parking spaces. 3. Bread: If you have difficulties with your stomach, Look for bakeries, who give the bread time to become bigger, Minimum 24 hours. Slow baked bread disturbs gluten

I think it’s not only the excellent floor, it’s also that the bread here is mostly sourdough and is not rushed. I read that if bread is made the old fashioned way with proper time to rise, the gluten strands are broken down and therefore more easy to digest! It’s the factory bread that has caused the massive rise in gluten intolerance. I’ll take any excuse that allows me to ear as much German bread as I want! 😜

I think the movin part is just a combination of laziness and effectivity. The more efficent you work, the faster you are done ^^ and btw Karneval starts on the 11th of november at 11.11 am and not on Weiberfastnacht. I personally don't like Karneval at all and I grew up and live at the area. That's just personal preference

Well, I always hated Karneval, even as a kid I wasn't really into it. Und deshalb möchte ich dir wirklich für die Sichtweise danken, die du mir hier gerade auf Karneval gegeben hast. Der Gedanke, es als eine Art Einläuten des Frühlings zu sehen, ist total schön und ich glaube, um es besser auszuhalten, werde ich ab jetzt versuchen, es auch so zu sehen 😅 . Danke dir dafür!

Well the thing you'd expirience with bread in Canada might not be related to gluten but more to the way wheat is treated shortly before harvesting with glyphosate.

@@lifeingermany_ Um, that is done in Europe as well. The amount used might be smaller, but it is enough to kill the plant itself. Harvesting is just easier that way and there is no other way to achieve this, yet. Doing it not at all would result in, well, let's put it in straight words, fewer food. We're working on it. Mhm I have always read that (US) Americans move more often than Germans. I just looked it up for Cananda and seem like Canadians move about 5-6 times in their life, while Germans move about 4-5 times. Maybe there is just more of a DIY culture, esepcially when it comes to kitchens and you often help out friends when they move as well, so we gain experience througj that?

I am German and almost 30 years old. I moved 10 times in my life up to now. In the majority of times I moved within the same town/city. In total I lived in 3 different cities (not counting limited periods of months I lived somewhere else for an internship). I believe here in Germany you can really rely on family and friends when it comes to moving. As long as there is enough food and beverage to keep the helping hands at strength everyone is happy to be together. I moved a lot during my young adulthood... And to be honest I was kind of relieved when I settled in my current apartment because I knew its going to be long term this time. :D

@@kolli7150 Usually you are right. However, when my parents moved from one part of the city to another, they hired a moving company. The advantage-> the gentlemen packed everything, really everything, themselves and the items were fully insured. We had offered help, but at the time we were "rudely" turned away with the reference to our small children. We organized the last move of my parents (in the same street) with the grandchildren and their friends. Oh yes, and our only move together so far was a disaster for the "Freundeshilfe" because they suddenly all (5 people) had to do something else, my family was left to help.

In the Middle Ages, there were areas where the bishop was very strict and people had nothing to laugh about. Except on the days before Lent, it was a bit more relaxed. Then, of course, people overdid it and carnival was born out of this celebration. In other areas, where people had fun all year round, there was no need for that.

I was at work a few years ago and a german colleague was complaining about the the DB. I said he had nothing to complain about compared to the state of the trains in the UK. Indian colleague just looks over, shakes his head and said "you both have no idea".. Trains, bringing people together :-) FKK culture takes some getting used to, you can be walking down the beach, you see people, further on you see people with dogs (dog beach) then you notice people naked.. Same thing happened in Holland.. Bread, why do the people serving the bread always stand in front of the bread and then ask you what you want.. "I'm not sure, I can't see what you have"..

If i have to choose between car and train I would mostly take the car. The DB is still too expensive and is not always good connected, especially in more rural areas (the car is twice as fast and cheaper). I comparison with American trains it looks good. For Germans, it's ok.

1. Discounters,. supermarkets and chains (like Kamps): I never buy bread or Brötchen (little breads) in these shops. The price sometimes is cheap, but the quality is poor, because they are made by machines. No baker´s hand ever touch them. So look for a local baker! 2. If you go to England or he USA: if you don´t speak or understand some English, you are lost. In Germany, English is taught in all schools, beginning in the primary school 6-10 years. When you are lost, for instance in a shop, you only have to ask "is anybody here who speaks English?"

It is a German cultural thing: Every German is a DIY-junkie. We just LOVE to do things ourselves. Which is why the builders warehouses (Baumärkte) are doing so well. 😊

DB - you forgott expensive. we pay triple what we pay in France for the same distance in an RER when we take the RE (equivalent train types) Bread - yeah and about 50 words for breadrolls. No probably not, but there are many! And which word is used is partly up to location, partly up to personal preference. Examples: "Brötchen", "brötli", "Bürli", "Semmeln", "Semmerl", "Weck", "Weggle", "Wecken" - the latter three all being plural of "Weck"-, "Laibchen", "Laabla", "Kipf", "Schrippe", "Rundstück" There are at least four of these, which I have never heard to date, but as I said- it mostly depends on location and perswonal preference, point when in doubt.

Where I am in Germany we don't have Karneval, just Fasching (like a very diet version of Karneval I would say) and I know literally noone who likes it D: I love the idea of dressing up in fun stuff but I never do anything because I don't have anyone who is in anyway interested D: at least they dress up for Halloween... not sure where the difference is? no clowns? (didn't work out my one friend went as pennywise a few years back...) idk what everyones problem with Fasching is...

When you hear someone saying "Feierabend" you know that this person will now relax, drink a cold beer or get something nice to eat and just want´s to relax, calm down and enjoy the few hours this person has before going back to work tomorrow.

Well, in 2021 ~ 82% of all trains were on time, and in December 93,5% of trains were on time. The max delay was 5,59 min. I am not a fan, but I think that’s pretty good.🤔

I beg to differ: Those statistics are misleading. Deutsche Bahn defines a train as on time even if it is 5 minutes late. And that can cost you your connection. I had to put up with this for 30 years and I am fed up. I don't mind to be late at my final station. But to see a train slam shut the dorrs right in your face and make you wait for another hour, or more due to a late next train, then you will see it in a different light. What really would count as a benchmark is how many journeys are on time. Give or take those 5 minutes. There was once a time when one train would definitely wait for the connecting to arrive and have the passengers change over. But those are long gone.

@@user-sm3xq5ob5d Wenn die Anschlusszüge warten würden, wären sie selbst ja wieder zu spät und irgendwoanders würden noch mehr Anschlusszüge wieder auf diesen warten müssen etc. Letztendlich verästelt sich das dann bis in die letzte Regionalbahn oder bis ins Ausland. - Fazit: Meckern ist leicht, aber Verständnis für die Komplexität des Fahrplans aufzubringen, da sind viele intellektuell überfordert, weil sie nur sich selbst sehen. Und dabei haben wir noch gar nicht über Baustellen, Pannen und andere Komplikationen gesprochen …

sry to have to correct you - but according to the latest "official" statsitics on beer consumption, germany is only placed third, right behind the czech republic (first) and austria (second). This statistic, of course, is only for 2020, but there doesn't seem to be newer ones, at least not for whole years. ... and if you ever needed proof that germans are knit-pickers and know-it-alls ... I think i just confirmed that ;)

About 20 litres of wine per capita, almost 100 litres of beer per capita. Doesn't necessarily say anything about the numbers of x drinkers, but I don't think an average beer drinker consumes 5x the amount of the average wine drinker. Also: Why not both?

Karneval or as we say in Hamburg Fasching is a kids event in the primary school and kindergarden. The people in western Germany aren´t tippical German. They are some special kind of German. From my perspective it is a little bit of never get grownup.

In the Middle Ages, beer was healthier than water. At that time the water quality was miserable. But today we have both good beer and water. I don't like beer myself and unfortunately the doctor recommended that I drink wine only rarely. water and rivers. Traditionally there is hardly a place that does not have access to a stream, river or body of water. That was and is important for settlement and agriculture. But also water sports or a holiday at the sea is very popular. Nudity, I think Germans are relaxed about doing that in permitted places. I only remember the attempt to monitor and regulate everything in the East. Until people insisted, this is a nudist beach and if you are a general with many medals, you must be naked here. And then we only address you in the non-polite form like everyone else. When it came to sexuality, the non-American influenced East was even more relaxed than the West. But that's mixed up today.
