Distracted. I prefer not having any music play when I'm working on something needing a lot of focus. At most I listen to instrumental music instead of music with vocals. That grill stand looks amazing! Those subtle curves and use of different species of wood really works well. I feel a 32 min video just does not convey all the hours of work you put into this. I also found the panto router segment of the video very satisfying to watch. I also very nearly spat out my morning coffee with laughter at the tip-toe joke 🤣
I find it so interesting that so many people share the same feeling about needing to pay attention in the shop. Thanks so much. Yeah this project was a ton of work and I had to unfortunately cut quite a bit for the sake of time and not being too redundant. I actually had a lot of concerns about that during the editing process mainly because I don’t think people really love watching milling which was a big part of this project. That and just working through all the different components. Glad you enjoyed it man!
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks I guess it's similar to turning down the music in the car when you're looking for a parking spot 🤷♂️ Watching the video didn't feel like you left things out. I feel you've shown enough milling in this video to get the idea across. It might not show how much you had to do, but it still works. Thanks for the video, Shane
Focused - great project. Love the wood combo and the curves really take the design up a level. I’m going to use that ledger board dado method on some future projects
Thanks! Yeah, I agree, the sapele and eucalyptus complement each other well. I love the ledger strip solution, that one saved me a ton of time in the end.
Now that is dedication! I also feel like this is a point where I should put that I’m not liable for any injuries that occur while watching the videos… haha
Focused. Totally agree with your take. Audiobooks (or in my case podcasts) require too much thinking for me. But put on my workshop jams playlist, and it gets me in the mood to just keep plugging away at whatever project I'm working on. What type of hand planes do you use?
Yeah, audiobooks and podcasts can be really distracting for me too. Music is great as long as it isn’t the same playlist for a week haha. I use a combo of Lie Nielsen and Veritas but lean more to the LN planes.
Distracted - I've been looking for a project like this! I don't have a big backyard and this corner bbq table would be perfect. I think I would just have to use dominoes though, I'm not sure about those mitered tenons. Those are sick! I feel like we are getting too used to how high quality your projects and videos are but top notch work on both dude!
Focused. I go between classical and old time radio shows (Sirius XM). Both work for me. By the way, I’m looking for a drawing bow like you used in this build. I paused the video but couldn’t read the brand. Can you provide more info or a link? Thank you.
Focused… If it’s music anyway. I have playlists that I use when I’m in the shop. It’s all music that I know and a little from every genre. (I actually have some 300GB of music on my phone.) It keeps the ADHD side of my brain occupied so I can concentrate on my work. I can’t do audiobooks though or even podcasts. It shifts to the active side of my brain and I’m too distracted to safely do any power tool woodworking. If I’m just cleaning up things (sanding, light chisel work, etc.) it’s ok, but I still FEEL distracted. Edited for grammar
Good question, I love using traditional mortise and tenon when I can and I don’t own an XL. Plus the PantoRouter can do a lot more than the domino can.
Distracted. If I'm doing something repetitive or that I've done 100 times, I can listen to whatever. If I have to focus on details or I'm doing something new, I have to listen to nothing, or to something like instrumental music.
From 5:30 to 7:30 The word “mortise(s)” was used 20 times. That works out to an average rate of 1 “mortise” every 6 seconds. Which translates to 100MPH (mortise per hour). Impressive… oh, and the build is absolutely amazing as always.
Focused. Sweet design dude! I’d love a set of plans, this is the nicest looking grill table I’ve come across. Though I will probably take like a month just to do the base joints. Keep it up, you’re my favorite actual woodworker on RU-vid.
Focused. I find jazz and classical are my go-to’s when working on complex / new to me techniques. If it’s something I’ve done a few times, I crank the metal. But, I do the same at my day job as a project manager at a software company….
My son tried one of those at a grocery store once and convinced my wife to get them. That will never be happening again haha. Glad you enjoyed this one!
Focused, music is required or I can’t concentrate. Oh, and loud. Phone is always turned up 100% with my airpods. Now… I’m disappointed you didn’t include video of moving that beast into the backyard, with something that big and awkward I bet it would have been really entertaining.
That’s the best way to listen to it! Haha, actually my father-in-law stopped by and he and I moved it to the backyard pretty easily. It just looks heavy and awkward. Eucalyptus is just as light as cedar, so I think in the end the entire thing only weighed about 120 pounds.
I'm definitely going to copy your design but with with joinery i can handle i'm not as talented haha .And i will have to make some changes to fit my black olive grill but definitely going to give it a try..Great video and again very entertaining !!
Focused. Mainly because I’m 80% deaf with some horribly distracting tinnitus. Anything that can drown that mess out helps with focus lol. Beautiful build brother. I’d definitely be interested in plans, though I’ll probably use cedar and cypress instead. Sapele and eucalyptus are hard to come by locally.
Focused and distracted. I've got a combo of bluetooth speakers and over-ear bluetooth headphones, so I like music when I've got all my stuff ready to saw, sand, router, or other tool that goes "Brrrttt." Then the speaker is for layouts, assemblies, etc. However, there are some days where my brain just will not do math, and I've got to shut the music off, wrestle the brain into compliance, and proceed. Then again, no podcasts here as those would definitely distract me, so it's 100% rage metal all the time. I like your grill stand, dude. I think the subtle leg curves are the chef's kiss - it makes it reminiscent of Arts and Crafts to me, which is my favorite. I agree with the other commenters that an update on the weathering of this would be cool. I'd also like your opinion after some use on that Grizzly drill press!
That's the best way to do it! Thanks, man. I'm glad you like those sweeping legs. I'll definitely give an update on both the grill table and the drill press!
Focused and distracted - I agree your take on when to listen to which. Would you please post an update in time on the heat from the grill vs. an entirely wooden structure? I’m keen to replicate what you have built, but had in mind to use fire bricks under the grill for fear of too much heat. Thx and looking forward to your ongoing success.
It's so nice to hear that I'm not alone on that one! Yeah, I can absoluelty post an update. When I designed this one I did it with the fact that I was going to use the ceramic feet to lift the grill about an inch off the lower shelf. But I did end up having to buy two sets as three didn't balance it well enough for my liking.
Brand new to the channel- could you talk about how you set up your shop, what equipment did you get and in Ed at order. Lastly what equipment do you recommend and why. Thanks.
#distracted - Always turning the Radio off, when i need to concentrate. One question occured to me while watching your video: are you using regular beechwood dominos? The ones you used seemed to be quite light in color. I always wondered if beechwood dowels would be enough for outdoor furniture since they are encased in other wood and sealed by glue? Only to always play it safe in the end and invest a bit more money in oak dowels..
There's nothing like silence to get on track quickly. Yeah, I just use the normal beech dominos, they might look lighter just from the lighting in the shop. As long as your joints are tight they work great for exterior applications.
Focused. I tried to listen to babel to learn a new language while working. That didn't work, so I just listen to political podcasts and get depressed about the state of our world.
Thank you! Skip planing is where the boards are relatively flat, but not perfectly flat so you run them through the planer on one face, then flip the board over and run it through on the other face. This gets the boards flat enough to use, but it’s not the traditional way toflatten them.
I listen to an Audiobook and it keeps me focused. Else my mind will start to wonder stupid things like "If electricity comes from electrons, does morality comes from morons?"
Distracted, but I still do it. How's that osmo uv oil hold up over time? You'd mentioned using it a few times, I was wondering how it hold up with say cedar as I'd love to find something that gives just a bit of protection but helps keep that non-gray look on occasion.
Haha, we're all guilty. The uv oil holds up really well. I have had it on a few pieces that see a ton of weather and haven't had any graying. You just have to reapply once every two years or so in my experience.
Distracted. I always put on a playlist of songs I can sing along with. I really love the look of sappele. Or sapelle. Sappelle?? Well, the stuff your using in this build anyway 😄
Distracted: I'm with you, if it's mundane and routine, it's podcasts, but the minute I need to figure something out, I need to turn it off or I end up despising whoever's taking, and they usually don't deserve that.
Focused - I find listening to instrumental music allows me to stay focused on "the task at hand". I love audio books for simple, repetitive tasks like sanding. Your videos are fantastic and your humor is really dry, just how I like it!
Focused... But I'm really just kind of a hobbyist so I'm not sure if I really know at this point.😊 I was wondering if I could ask you a question, I've been looking at grizzly table saws and I was wondering if you had an opinion on them?
That’s all right I’m sure you’ll find out due time. I really enjoy all of my grizzly tools aside from my drum sander and I have a couple friends that own a Grizzly table saw and they’re super happy with them. I actually had an issue with the laser assembly on my drill press and the new part should be arriving today so customer service is really easy to work with as well.
Focused. great video! thanks for posting! I made something similar for a weber kettle grill several years ago when I was just starting out in woodworking. Considering remaking it after watching your video. Looked for the plans on your website and etsy but didn’t find them. Do you intend on releasing the plans? Thanks again.
Thanks man I really appreciate it! I haven’t quite gotten enough people to request plans to make them yet, but it’s getting really close and if I do, I’ll definitely let you know.
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks thanks. Forgot to mention that I like all the dad jokes in your videos! Here’s one for you: Why should you never mark a board with a dull pencil? Because it’s pointless.
Focused! Your tips, edits, designs, and joke are always spot on. I love your work and your style. Thanks for sharing, you’re by far my favorite woodworking channel.
Distracted! I'm newly retired and am getting ready to start woodworking with kitchen cabinets for my rental apartment. (My second floor) I have been watching all kinds of woodworking in order to get allot of different ideas. Not just cabinet making, but everything I can in order to get allot of different joinery ideas. I am an electrician of 45 years so I know that, tools make the tradesman! And tools I have. So, you may hear from me again with a question or 100! Thanks and great channel.
Distracted. I'm the same way, if I need to really focus, I put on music that I know but... it can't be music that absolutely slaps because I'll find myself singing if I'm not careful. I appreciate that you make longer videos. I hate watching a large project come together in under 10 minutes. I pick up so many more tips in videos like these.
Focused! Another great build! I’ve been looking at those steel framed grill stations with the fake brick to get inspiration to build exactly what you just built! Thank you! The only thing I was looking to add were some stainless steel drawers or stainless cabinet to keep charcoal and supplies it. I know it will kill the look, but sometimes function over form for convenience!
With Music I know, "Focused" I love listening to music I know while in the shop. Oddly enough I love listening to the band "Tool" while using tools. Lol!
My cousin has been wanting me to build her something like this for her Egg. Nothing has looked right until now! Yours is perfect and gorgeous. Love all your work. Thanks for sharing.
