Honestly, I'd been wondering if there were any updates concerning Joey's main channel, since I don't recall seeing any new uploads on that channel, and a lot more on the secondary channel?
I agree, Unravel is one of the very few songs and just music in general that stays good and gets even better as I grow up. First time listening to it, I was in 5th grade, and it blew my mind because how impactful and different it is from other ops. To this very moment, it still slaps
Not a massive Kenshi Yonezu fan, just occasionally listened to some of his hit songs but man Kick Back is a banger for sure. The way how the bass and guitar and the song in general sounds just makes it so addictive to me.
I honestly think that Kenshi Yonezu was a great artist to pick for the Chainsaw Man OP, like his work with songs like Mad Head Love shows how he both has the hard hitting nature to match Chainsaw Man but also the weirdness that fits Tatsuki Fujimoto
(edit: minor spoilers for one of the early episodes of s1) This. We're talking about a character who, in the first couple episodes, literally risks his life just to feel a boob. The music doesn't just slap, but fits far better than it's being treated.
Maximum the Hormone probably fits CSM better, but Kenshi Yonezu’s Kick Back is the safer choice when it comes to finding something that appeals to a large general audience.
I'd say the CSM opening just gets even better the more you listen to it. The first time I listened to it I thought it was alright, but the more I listened to it, the more I fell in love with it.
I like how people like to call Lisa's songs overrated because it's always being used as an opening to a popular anime, but don't realize the key connection to those popular openings is Lisa herself. She's one of the most talented singers in the industry, only behind Aimer in my opinion. Girl knows how make a song have a long and lasting impact on your life.
@@vegancardigan IMO, her best work is "catch the moment". I don't know why or how, but it made me tear up. I still don't understand how it happened, but I love that song so much!!
I'm not really a Kenshi Yonezu fan, but I gotta sat that the instrumental department of the opening itself is quite outstanding. It's a clever composition on many layers of depth, both rhytmically engaging and innovative when referring to the uses of the modulation to pursue a narration within the song itself. Maybe I'm being a little bit bias, albeit I'd probably love this music composition even if not associated to such a popular and hyped piece of media.
Yap, incredible mixing and banger use of bass/guitar/drums, and don't get me started on all the little details in with the organ, etc. Massive L take from Joey. My only complaint of it is not using the entire song and having a 3 minute long op.... Massive, massive L Joey... At least he won the prize of "worst take" in the video
Yeah, people only hate it because it's not "heavy" (sad to hear Joey's also of this opinion). But it's better than pretty much any of the endings so far. It's very playful musically and lyrically and radiates Denji energy all over the place. In fact I believe it's an underrated song.
@@ChemyNoSurfea yea it has the same feeling to me as the animation, it's not going hard or anything but it's creative, crazy, showing the main feeling of Chainsaw man besides the grim parts
I enjoyed hearing your take on What's Up People. I hate that kind of music, but thinking about it in the context of the animation and the series as a whole it definitely fits the series well. There's a lot of what can potentially go into making a great opening song and accompanying animation.
Kick Back really grew on me. At first I didn't like it as much. Now I don't skip it anymore at all. If we're talking about just the song itself this is true, because the lyrics are quite ingenious and idk it just grew on me. I actually think it's a really clever move to have chosen this op for the anime. But man the visuals and layers in the actual op are on another level. I gained so much respect after I saw Mother's basement video on it.
Same tbh, at first i agreed with Joey. After listening to it some more, i realized it actually is pretty smart to use this. As unlike how people expect from the surface for it to be just badass rock and denji cutting some shit. It actually is much chaotic showing both sides of Denji. Just like the show itself
for me personally, it does felt CSM could have a harder opening song, but Kenshi Yonezu captures Denji's desire and desperation quite perfectly. And the song has a messy vibe to it, which captures quite a lot of the characters or story in the anime, but that's just me
I feel like the massive hype about it is just Norma shounen stuff. It's a decent op, but doesn't do anything transformative with deeper meanings like Clannad, Steins Gate, Sangatsu no Lion, or Code Geass op 5. I'd probably give it a 7/10, next to A Place Further than the Universe. Both capture the essence of their shows, but don't do much beyond that. What it does with movie references is cool, but also not that transformative to the story
@@seeking4948 then explain why. If you think it's a bop then sure, whatever. But to claim it to add anything to the narrative or transform the story would just be completely wrong
I don't know how people think that trash op is underrated , its so trash that it makes the second part of the series even worse , first op is better in literally evrey way
@@kingdoom5022 You mean the first opening with a generic song with generic visuals and elementary level symbolism? Nah, second opening is better in every way.
People literally only hate it because "Screamo bad" despite how perfectly it captures the tone of the series and Light's mental state. The art is also a hundred times better in terms of symbolism and how characters are presented.
Personally, felt like Kenshi Yonezu was a perfect fit for chainsaw man. He’s such a chaotic character and is you watch his music videos, he resonates Denji energy. Ill admit I’m little bit of a yonezu stan, but I think the opening is perfect.
The first times that i listen to it, i didnt like it because of the Auto tune, but when i reach the middle of the series i like it so much that i putt in my phone as ring tone
I honestly am not a big fan of metal music, but FaLiLV spoke to me. Let me hear introduced me to my favorite metal band(yes I know they are part of the electronicore genre). The contrast between So's very digital vocals to Minami's screams or unclean vocals are just sooo fucking good all the while the other band members are popping off. Also the way they just switch genres or styles mid-song is just soooo good. The transitions are insane especially in Let me hear. Anyway sorry for the long spiel but I just really love that band and I think they make amazing songs(especially The Demon Called Careless).
The channel named ‘The Anime Man’ gets the trivial stuff uploaded to it. The channel named ‘Joey’ gets the anime stuff uploaded to it. Perfect as all things should be
I actually love the chainsaw man opening, like at first I was like “oh,. This is it?” But now a bit into the series I’m loving it, the visuals, the song.. everything
I loved blood circulation WAAAAY over silhouette. For some reason the opening gives me a slight sense of dread exactly what Naruto and co were feeling at that moment in the anime(with kaguya being revealed) and i loved how the opening shifted from a sense of dread to a sense of hope in such seamless fashion. It is SO under rated
I honestly just want to see his opinion on the 3rd ending of CSM considering his high high praise for Maximum the Hormone and how he wishes they sung the opening
Was just about to comment that. People should really stay for the csm eds, they are so good. They give exactly csm vibes every time. Kinda sad to think about what the people are missing out on. And as a total Maximum the hormone stan, i recognized them immediately. Loosing my brain over this shit. Sounds so good
Honestly I know people were expecting some heavy metal, screamo type music for CSM’s opening but I was always expecting something more electronic hip hop or techno etc. The style they went for just fits so perfectly with CSM imo and I can’t really explain why.
In my opinion Fear and Loathing and Las Vegas is an amazing band and the vocoder (not auto-tune) works great, that's what makes them what they are. The screamer who also is the keyboardist hits hard. They mix different genres together and I think it works amazingly
I would love to see a video about the best *music* in anime. Not just openings or endings, but songs within a show. For example, Nana, Angel Beats, Your Lie in April, or my personal favorite: the song in Given season 1. sooo good
I have to say, the chainsaw man opening doesn’t deserve this much hate. The song describes Denji’s desire to get close to Makima very well. His voice is amazing and the meaning behind the song is deeper than most people thought.
Yh fr it's just MTH fans whining that the opening wasn't metal enough. As if dark, gritty metal fits the show better than Kick Back. The only thing MTH could offer is the chaos of the show, but istg if ED 3 was the OP I'd skip it every damn episode - ED 3 is the most overrated piece of garbage I've heard in some time (though I will say it's great until they switch genre).
No one talks about the Monogatari EDs. Kimi no Shirakami Monogatari is probably the greatest ed of all time and Shiori is ClariS’ most underrated song.
hot take maybe? music-wise i think the song is fantastic but visually? the kaleidoscope gimmick is over-used in the opening and makes for a pretty boring visual. it's nice to watch the first time, but then i got bored of seeing it lol
There are soo few that talk about songs done by egoist. The band was literally formed in anime guilty crown but became a real band. They also made psycho-pass opening and ending songs
Fun fact about SAO op1: Years ago, when I didn't know this anime existed, I was listening to shiz on soundcloud and I heard the english version by K0y0mi that someone illegally uploaded there. It was so extremely good it actually made my heart flutter. So I looked up the song and found Sao. Completely expecting it to be a romance anime where the couple help each other to go through hardships, I thoroughly enjoyed the Eincrad arc. We don't talk about the later arcs.
I think My War is a great song for an opening. It definitely is the proper song choice to show how different the season is from the past ones. It’s just that the visuals could’ve been better.
Colors is my favorite too. I stopped watching anime back in '10 and FMAB was my last watched anime. So when I heard Colors, it brought me back and I started watching anime again. I'm still grateful to FLOW for producing this beauty.
So glad that Joey LOVES the second SAO opening, I like Eir Aoi's voice and definitely would jam out to the songs she sings! I probably would adore her more if I watched the anime they were associated with.
5:32 i think the statement works both ways A good anime opening can easily carry the show, or at least make it known; and a good anime can make the openings known Its a symbiotic relationship Artists boost the anime, the anime boosts the artists
honestly wished they got sigure instead of TK for the chainsaw man ed but i guess we should be grateful they get any representation in any form of media at all, and hopefully the song lives up to the expectations
With Chainsaw Man, I was in the same boat as you Joey where I didn't really like the OP, but now, by episode 6, I think it bloody slaps, so maybe you just need to give it a couple more weeks. It was kinda like when I heard "My War" the first time and was like "what the f*ck is this?", but after each week it slowly grew on me and now its one of my favourites.
I don't think I have ever agreed so much with your music takes as much as in this video. I thought for the longest time that you do consider TK's TG opening overrated but you have gone the extra mile to state the difference between overrated and overplayed. The chainsawman OP has grown on me, I was of the same opinion that Maximum should have been the artists to make the OP 100% but after some episodes I have realised they wanted to tone the show down, make it more atmospheric instead of batshit crazy, so I get why they didn't wanna play into it with the op too. The ED by Maximum was great tho xD all of these ED's go right into the playlist xD
Hey Joey, I don't if this was discussed before, but it would be really cool to find out more about HOW Anime Openings are chosen. Does the studio buy the rights to use the song? Do the rights holders line up and pay to be featured in Animes? Are some songs actively commissioned? Thanks for considering my topic =)
My War is one of my favourite OPs. I love the orchestral, dark sound. Also it feels like the complete opposite vibe to shinzou wo sasageyo, both the visuals and music
This is definitely an unpopular take but I think the CSM opening is Kenshi's best song (and the best anime op of the year ofc). His voice fits the feel so well imo and the song is really unique as well. I also like the first ending by Vaundy but it sounds a lot more generic. Also wtf the Alfheim op is mid asf
Rare Joey L for Unravel and CSM OP take. CSM quiet moment are as good as the chaotic moment, which is why going all in with band like MTH might not be the best choice for the OP which job is to represent the entire story. And also why MTH song work perfectly as the ED3 that represent that chaotic episode 3.
I hope to see Chainsaw man op 2 to be more darker heavier as the story become more gorish and complex, but for the first "fun" part I think it fits well
Can't believe Joey doesn't really like Kenshi Yonezu's music. I've been following his music since he was making it under the name Hachi, and he has so many good songs from that time and now. His song Shinigami is SO GOOD!
But to be fair "kick back" was pretty average for his standards... I'd argue the first ending song "chainsaw blood" is way better...I mean I feel in love with that song over the op when I first heard them
Two anime openings I think are surprisingly under mentioned when people talk about good openings are Papermoon from Soul Eater and the High School of the Dead OP.
@@kingdoom5022 Damn that would sound like a brutal diss to someone not familiar with the Monogatari series. But I have to agree. I'd put these OP/EDs above Platinum Disco: Sugar Sweet Nightmare Ren'ai Circulation Kimi ni Shiranai Monogatari Marshmallow Justice Naisho no Hanashi Perfect Slumbers Mousou Express White Lies Snowdrop Mathemagics Mein Schatz Étoile et Toi Though you can argue that White Lies, Mein Schatz and Étoile et Toi are too different to compare, which would elevate it from my #13 to #10. So just _barely_ but it makes the list
@@hundvd_7 I mean, at this point, arguing over which Monogatari songs are the best is like trying to rank Beethoven's symphonies. Even the worst one is great. It's really in the details of personal taste and I don't really see the point in dissing each other. I'm like "I prefer this one. Oh you prefer that one? Yeah, that's respectable."
Why does everybody do the equation Opening = Song ? 😥 I rarely see the visual get talked about and they're just as important (if not more, depending on the opening itself)
The composition for unravel is so wonderful. I'm obviously biased because I've never experienced it in isolation, but genuinely the complexity of the song and the way it meshes orchestra and LTS' unique 'acoustic/metallic screamo' sound (I can't find a better way to put it) is just amazing. Definitely overplayed for most ears, but I can listen to it infinite times and notice new stuff in the song because it's so heavily layered. Also on the CSM op, I think it's just too vanilla of a song. I'd expected something more avant garde, weird and chaotic. I love how in the trailers for CSM they used the chainsaw sound as an instrument, and I was hoping they'd gone for something more in that direction. It was just a bit of a disappointment.
I think Unravel also is a „You love it or you hate it“ anime OP. I dont know if its just not my style but since the first time I heard it, I just god damn hated that opening. I hated the slow opening and then the loud yell singing. Its just not for me. And then we add the overplaying part. Wether you like the anime or not, I personally love the Fire Force Opening atm. Its just fun and upbeat. Probably nothing special but its something I can listen to more than once.
In terms of KICK BACK, I am quite the Yonezu fan boy and it is easily my favorite OP of the year, but I will say it was definitely a bit of a business decision, like getting the biggest artist in Japan for the OP of the most anticipated Shonen anime in recent memory, so maybe had CSM not been as popular, Maximum the Hormone or SiM would’ve been chosen. With that said it also seems like a lot of passion was put into it with Yonezu and Daiki Tsuneta being huge fans of the manga and all the details they put into the song itself representing CSM. Also with the second half of the story being even crazier than the first half, I think it’s fitting that they leave a band like MtH, SiM or King Gnu for season 2. To each their own though
I loved the Psycho Pass OP, still listen to this song, same to unravel. I totally recommend the "First Take version" its chefs kiss. Also, please give a try to more of their songs, they have a lot of nice ones like "flower" or "Monster" and many more!
The thing you said about Naruto opening 2 being the peak, made my day - YES, It absolutely is, every bit of it! I also think that Haruka Kanata portrays the exact feeling one would expect going into Naruto
The thing about Aot Final op is that it is a completely different perspective and almost another show entirely. It's no longer about them over coming the titans, "freedom", glory, etc but now it's the tipping point to the islanders and Yeagerist causing death and destruction on the rest of the world, in the name of their own freedom.
I would disagree about Chainsaw Man's opening; Kick Back is pretty good for me. While I agree that Maximum the Hormone would be a great fit to CSM, I think it's already great that not only did they have an ending theme on CSM, they also have their song incorporated into the actual show sometimes. *I think that's more than enough to put MtH into CSM's sound*
The Chainsaw Man'OP, I think, may not be as banging, but it addresses youth (got melody that tells the story), got the brisk feeling (the two who don't care), and the lyrics that summarise the perspective of Kenji, which I feel it fits the meaning of the anime pretty well.
As a metal guitarist, I spent 10 mins rewinding "What's up people" every time I saw an episode of DN. Reminds me a lot of Chopsuey with all the craziness going on. Literally a headbanger. 🔥
That dude is nuts.... The Evangelion opening, almost single handedly, planted the seed of appreciation of the Japanese language and it's beauty, in my young mind... This seed, put me on the path I am on today where my Japanese level is almost N3 level, and I'm studying every day out of pure passion and a deep spiritual appreciation of the language. He deserves the L + Ratio... 110%
18:45 hell yeah the OGs know..."haruka kanata" was what made Naruto ops in it's early days...even though my favourite is the 5th one "seishun kyoushoukyoku"
As a Silhouette enthusiast, I would like to point out my reasonings as to why it's better than Haruka Kanata. Firstly, I believe that an opening is like a math equation. You add in both the visuals and the music to determine if you like it or not. Silhouette has the superior visuals. The scene of a young Naruto growing up whilst he runs in the battle field still gives me chills till this day. We've seen that boy grow up into the ninja that he was when that opening released. Secondly, I think that Silhouette fit the visuals perfectly. The opening was about the journey of the four main characters we were following: Naruto, Sasuke, Madara, and Obito. It didn't need a hard hitting song like Haruka Kanata. The angelic tone of the vocalist of Silhouette set the tone for the opening. It's kinda like Red Swan in Attack on Titan. Instead of having a banger like the first couple of openings, they chose to slow it down and hit you in the feels instead of your ear drums.
When it comes to Chainsaw Man. I think Kick Back was a good song, but the artist I would've wanted to sing the OP is TK from Ling tosite sigure. I know I'm a massive fan of his and that the ED he made was fire, but I think he would've been better for the OP.
In my personal opinion, CSM Op is good enough, and especially because we actually did get a maximum the hormone song for one of the endings, which is actually exactly what I imagined Chainsaw man's OP to be like. It more than makes up for it that we get SO many different endings, everyone can have their favorite song.
Chaisawman's Opening is great. Kick Back got so many layers put into it making it really fun to sit down and just listen to it quietly. It is a really great song man. But Joey is correct when saying that they could have picked a better band to suit the csm vibe. I personally think King Gnu is perfect for Chainsawman
I introduced my friend to Death Note, and I can clearly remember his first time hearing that 2nd OP by Maximum the Hormone and letting out a pleasantly surprised "OHH! Shit's getting real." Hearing them again for that Chainsaw Man ED lit me up. All their music makes me want to rage in the pit
I'm so so so happy that you mentioned "Platinum Disco" cause I always didn't understand why noone talked about it. I thought maybe I was weird cause the opening slaps and is a total vibe........nice
Can't believe Joey has read monogatari and thinks Nadeko is the worst character D: I'm still expecting the Off Season adaptation to see everyone start loving Nadeko after watching Nademonogatari 😌
I looked up the parasyte opening, and it immediately pissed me off because it reminded me of the HunterxHunter ending (just awake, I looked it up😅).. . Also, HunterxHunter's second ending almost made me cry because, in my view and taste of music, there was many perfect opportunities for a heavy double kick drum section while the singer is doing his thing.
A video about personal ancestry on The Anime Man channel, and a episode of Let's Fight on the Joey channel? I think there might have been a mistake. lol
While i enjoy kick back, I actually think the endings they use for chainsaw man are the real star of the show (music wise) Chainsaw blood by vaundy is such a good song and is what I invision when I think about chainsaw man. Just my opinion though the whole selection of songs for this anime overall is amazing.
I don't know why but whenever I scroll wheel click on the channel icon underneath the video to open it in a new tab, it brings me to JoeyAnime which has no videos, 26 subscribers, and one playlist.
I can 100% understand and respect your opinion on the CSM opening, but the song is a banger for me, I love Kick Back lol Also, loved watching this series back when you did it on the main channel, happy to see more of it!
I know it’s probably not the intention but for parasyte op I think the auto tune fits the theme of the show, for example we think of auto as the more natural and human sound compared to screaming which in the op is like the voice of the parasites which scream is definitely more natural than auto, a unnatural thing. Just like how in the show human do more evil than parasytes as they are just trying to live, something naturally and necessary, but is mistake for something bad. Now there is more to it and stuff but that’s just one of the reasons op is genius
I agree with many things you said, like Tank!/Gun's & Roses, and also what you said about Haruka Kanata and Silhouette. And who could ever hate Flyers? Geez.
The best anime opening is Gundam 0079. It’s just perfect for the show and really adds to the atmosphere of the horrors of war with the juxtaposition of a super robot music and the show itself. It’s like a piece of propaganda in the world itself.
If I had twitter and joined on this I would have said blue bird (naruto) was up there, haven't heard silhouette. I would have also mentioned GO!!! as an underappreciated naruto opening, but you joey had the right opinion. Haruka kanata is probably the best naruto opening. Personally I always thought that bakuman had the better "blue bird" opening. Talking underappreciated series right there. And I never watched evangelion, but Cruel angel's thesis FUCKING SLAPS, it's SO GOOD. Otherwise I think giving just a very small clip of the most known part would be helpful for videos like these where you discuss anime openings/endings would help quite a few people who aren't as familiar with all the series being discussed.
i started laughing so hard when you mentioned brokencyde. my childhood lmao and bro, people that say naruto openings are overrated just dont like music. haruka kanata, diver, sign, go, etc. there are a lot of bangers in naruto/naruto shippuden openings. i bet its the same people that says Whats Up People is bad
I’m 17mins in and surprisingly haven’t seen any Kuroshitsuji opening mentioned. I was honestly expecting at least Monochrome Kiss. (And I’m saying this as a Kuroshitsuji fan too.) Also… jeezus Joey just threw me back so hard by mentioning Brokencyde. (I saw them live at one point too. 💀)
The CSM opening song has so many intracicies and depth to it. If you sit and listen to the song with your eyes closed, listed to the song itself and the instrument placements etc... It's actualy insanely intricate.
I’m so glad someone has brought up how good staple stable is. Ever since it came on in the first episode of Bake, I grew more and more in love with it. However, despite how overplayed Renai Circulation is, I still somehow haven’t disliked it yet. It’s still good. And overall, monogatari is dangerously oversaturated with good OPs. I have trouble choosing my favorite between like five of them. Mousou Express, Platinum Disco, Kaerimichi, chocolate insomnia are some of the songs I still love very much and listen to regularly.
I get your point for Chainsaw Man's opening. Maximum the hormone would technically fit for the gory, chaotic side. However, it wouldn't work for the emotional and deep side. I actually think Kick Back is the perfect song to represent the whole Chainsaw Man experience. MTH wouldn't be enough as an OPENING (especially season 1). I really don't understand why people don't enjoy the song itself, it's the most unique thing I've heard in a extremely long time and the chosen chords are perfect for Chainsaw Man's vibe. I'm still glad we had MTH as an ending tho, it was stunning
