What I want to know is who in the world came up with this? Same with knitting and crochet. I mean, knitting is basically two sticks and some yarn and crochet is a hooked twig. Who looked at these twigs and said "I can make something with that!" and got some yarn/rope and came up with stitches and what not. It's crazy! TYSM for sharing Steve!

It started in Japan, making the sash for the ceremonial robes and the cord for the sword handles

Braiding started with all women since the beginning of time. It was before Pantene. The Japanese certainly have perfected the craft with the long cords they make. Much respect for the Obi. Women have braided hair to keep it out of the way, ever since we convinced men to stop dragging us around by it. Long before God separated us by race. ❤✝️🙏

@@alfkey4155 No. Braiding hair is a woman thing. We've been doing it since the cave age. Long before God divided up the races and tongues. The Japanese have just perfected it beautifully. The Obi, a belt on a kimono, is apparently made with kumihimo in Japan. I saw one video and it was beautiful, tho' she messed it up at first. She still made it 5 or 6 feet long. I was flabbergasted!

I have never had the opportunity to work on this craft. I decided to buy a Kumihimo kit at thrift store today. I always thought it was a fancy way of braiding. I’m going to try it today.

I still remember how we did this in the late 80's and early 90's safety pinned to our pegged jeans and tying knots.

Thanks for getting to the point. Some instructors take a while and I like your no nonsense approach. I just jave the square one but it makes round spirals just fine. A multi functional tool.

Steve, this video was fascinating, I have never heard of this form of braid making before, and I think it's utterly beautiful. I was mesmerized by the last two you did, I must say! I would really love to see you create bangles, and other things with the braids, so please do make a video showing us how you do that, if you wouldn't mind. I think this would be a great art form to get into during cold winter evenings by the fire. I would also like to see you making the braids with beads on them, I think you mentioned that on another video. Can you show us all the ways you can use the braids please Steve? Thank you in advance. God bless you and yours, now and always.

This would be a video that I would watch over and over again (10 times or more) before I even tried to do it.... Not sure what mine might turn out like!!! Takes me a bit to get some of the newer crafts. However, I do LOVE a new challenge.. I will have to get the stuff together first before I even think about trying it. So it will be a while. OH WELL!!! Something to look forward to. Stay safe, you do you, and stay crafty 👍👍🛎️🔔🦋🦋 Please show how to make jewelry

When I was a girl I made bracelets from embroidery thread. They turned out kinda like the first 1 on the square thing. I used a clip board or my toes to hold it 🤣😂🤣😂. My dad was a boy scout leader. They did lots of things with knots n whatnot. I had way more fun with them than I did with my girl scout group

Thats what I used because I had lots of it. I also had leftover waxed cord from a macrame jewelry project. I think any cord you like works fine.
