Lanre Oladejo As a rule of thumb your role will be to try to stick to best practice - vanilla - as much as possible , given the dependencies: soft, hard, business or technical. That is if you are not doing the implementation. In which case the same stays but you need to think margin and plan your contingencies like they are going to happen, because they will, at all levels..

@True TT A "Use Case" simply means what the end user wants to the system to do or let him/her do for a given process within the Business Constraints / Logic. Technology limitations, Design Constraints, and/or Business Requirement may lead to Business Process Re-Engineering (nice words to process change) recommendations/approvals.

This is great. I too have had a long career as an Business Analyst and Data Analyst managing data and data process’ without SQL, and only very specific proprietary systems tools. I've been thrown into a Business Analyst position out of nowhere and I felt immediately overwhelmed. However, after watching some of the videos posted by Bridging the Gap on RU-vid and at their website by Laura Brandenberg I feel more at ease and realized why I was thrown into this without asking for it. I ordered the book cause I'm old fashioned. I still learn better by reading. Laura is very likable and so clear spoken I actually enjoy the videos. I'm glad that I found this resource and its website when just starting this new role.

Great info & tips! I'm interested in becoming BA but I don't have a college degree, can I begin looking for a jr BA role, as I work towards getting my degree? Also my current job is similar, as a records mgment specialist, involving speaking to stakeholders, acting as an interepter between a records management agency & the business end user. HI there, it certainly sounds like you have some transferable BA skills that will help with your transition. I'd suggest as a next step going through our free training to help you plan out your BA career path. I have 2 test cases to solve from potential employee and 2 days given. And i have no idea how detailed solution i should provide. Do i need to provide user stories or just a high overview what should be done to develop solution. Its about implementation of digital payment requests. From creation to pushing to Treasury and making actual payment.

Update: In result I just created public space in my Confluence server, wrote most important questions i had, based on my assumptions made some examples of flowcharts and builded main wireframe in Axure. And send them email with links to my solution. I would write some user stories in Jira but i thougt that this would be too hardcore for first ofline interview stage. If they will be really interested they should invite me to office to discusd about my solution. If no... well.. fine. Will keep learning Kubernetes and programming.

Sounds like you took a good approach. Often employers are looking at work samples for your analytical skills. And, since it sounds like the assignment wasn't super clear, they may have also wanted you to ask clarifying questions.

As a BA. how much tech skills do you need to be successful? As in understanding coding languages, and computer science? Surely, if you're telling businesses what to do with their IT systems, you must need to be quite confident with IT?

Hi Live Life Outdoors, It depends on the precise role requirements, but many business analysts are successful by being able to describe WHAT the technology needs to do (the functionality and data requirements discussed in this video), versus HOW the system does it (i.e. is coded). I was successful as a BA without knowing coding languages or SQL and many of our participants do the same once they learn essential requirements modeling skills so they can get to the right level of detail with their requirements.

Hi Charan, It's really up to you. The skills I discuss in this video are what you need to succeed as a business analyst on a software project. I personally do not know how to code. It is not a necessary skill set unless you want to move into a software development role, or a more technically-focused BA role where light coding may be required.

Let me tell you something here.. here in India a Tester or a Developer is a BA than a skilled BA.... So the basic knowledge of a BA here in India is of no worth... I am a BA having 9 yrs of experience, now am in a search of a job .. when I attended some interviews I was asked these questions of how do you code etc.... I wondered why would I need to code something... You may ask me why didn't I look into JD before interview, reason being why are companies expecting such high end technical skills for a BA so had to attend it... And I understood they need a developer who can talk to business and say an yes for everything and deliver business ask , they don't wanna analyse... They are ok doing rework... I mean pathetic.. Most of companies are MNCs, note that

Hi Madupathy, I hear you! Many companies are using the Business Analyst job title to represent roles that are not really business analysis roles. Sounds like this might be more common in India.
