Watching Ryan experience genuine anger and resentment towards the adults/staff in this game honestly felt extremely satisfying. It felt like I didn’t need to be as angry and salty as I would have been, because he was viewing this both from a child’s and a former child’s perspective.

Now 8bit needs to play The Friends We Left behind which takes place in the timeline Anthony was the detective that came back to the asylum

It so awful to think that, back then, it was considered normal to do these kinds of tests. These nurses, and doctors only saw these unhealthy children as non-human and some of them had to have been mothers/fathers of other children too

I've been in places like these because I am autistic and had traumatic experiences that caused mental problems. This game made me cry. It's so sad, yet every place I've been to had people working there that treated the kids like they hated them with a passion. The weaker the kid, the worse he got treated. I stood up to them so many times, protected other kids so many times, but I got punished in ways that no kid should ever be punished. Sexual abuse is quite normal in these places. In reality, these places are much worse than this game is portraying. In the last 30 or so years I've had many psychiatrists and therapists, and most are plain evil and sadistic. They always make me feel like I'm wrong and defective. These people don't accept that people can be different, and they punish you for it in the most sadistic ways. These people made my life worse instead of better. All I needed was someone to understand that I am different and would just listen. I truly hope with all my heart that this will stop one day and that people who have mental problems and/or disorders will get the respect they deserve.

Sadly kids were sometimes completely abandoned by their parents in these homes for years or even decades.

Something i think everyone missed and even i didnt notice until almost the end.....Hollows first sacrifice was her colour....she knew she was going to off the kid by the dumpsters so she gave it up cuz she didnt feel like she deserved it after what she was going to do. omg the lobotomy shown in here is also the most cruel version. it was some doctor who decided ''let me just take two ice picks and GUESS where to smash them, then wiggle it to screw up the brain'' it was done without anastethics, the patients got electro shocked till they passed out for it, and ofc since its behind the eyes the skull never gets repaired after either. SO may died as the doctor got cocky and started doing tricks (even doing 2 patients at once) just to show off

i love the design of polo, especially the necklace, as it would make sense for a kid to think of those faces, and for those who dont know, those faces are for levels of pain on charts, normally found in hospitals, smiling face is no pain then the red angry face is alot of pain, just thought it was a really cool detail

as someone with a personal experience with the psych ward, a lot of this hit close to home. no one ever realizes how horrible it truly is to reach out for help and someone makes you feel horrible for it. a lot of the staff i had didn’t care about us and it was very disheartening. it’s insane how people will treat you for a paycheck. luckily i was able to make connections to the other kids there, that i even keep in contact with one of the people i was with. to anyone struggling, you are loved, you will make it through this, and you are so strong

I was institutionalised twice last year when I was sixteen, and while it was nothing as horrendous as asylums and the game depiction, my gut genuinely twisted as some aspects of the game reminded me of how I felt at the time. Till this day, i have vivid nightmares about my time there, and im terrified of being sent back. Asylums were incredibly fast from perfect or humane, but even today mental hospitals lack in areas

the "it seems he makes tapes of his victims" perfectly lines up with how he put a camera infront of you when you were asleep. He was going to kill you.

This game was so disturbing yet strangely hartwarming at the same time.

Seeing ryan actually get mad about how the nurses are acting is so fucking real.

This game made me get absolutely EMOTIONAL. normally im not one to be emotional with games but this one just hit a right spot for me. the story to me is unique but it also shows the cruelty of some people in this world and how many kids are treated too. seeing how many are mistreated and dumped to be left in a hellhole of a place? the amount of souls left to rot for nothing. But this game truly does hit a nerve in me and it gives off vibes ive never really seen before. i really do would love to see a sequel of this too! this game has tons of potential and im dying to see the story continue to see how the life of the kids turn out to be... and all their imaginary friends too.

i find it interesting how we were given hints as to who the "ghost" was the whole time. (The only other person with glowing eyes, The only one who would know Anthony was awake, probably other stuff i missed.)

Theory Time! I am almost certain that Hollow is the Ghost of Anthony's Dead Friend. One Hiccup to this possibility is that we only see his disturbing behavior begin as a trauma response to Hollow beating the bully, though there shouldn't be any confusion that he and Anthony are clearly not friends. What adds to this unique quality of hers is that Hollow can still live despite Anthony dying in the first timeline and can bargain for a magical cosmic event with yet another supernatural entity. Functionally speaking, all the other Imaginary Friends should be able to do this too if they weren't solely the product of their children's Imaginations. Only Pooky seems to be able to manipulate His environment, with his Fire unlike the others.

This game needs to become an anime or movie, this is incredible and so appetizing in entertainment. This Dev really went all out in production and Ryan playing it makes it an absolute masterpiece!!!

other than the tests and stuff this is still pretty similiar to asylums today, with the strict schedules, being treated as inhuman, and being punished for being sick. its horrible, but theres one thing that this game misses, the uncanny feeling of every item being slopped so people cant hang themselves on it, truly the darkest thing i found from experience. (not crazy btw just bad decision one night)

21:00 Because mental challenges were poorly understood and apparently zero effort was made to try here, it was acceptable to treat them poorly Mercifully the rules have changed and such unethical things we see here in this game are not allowed in the medical community. Also mental illnesses and challenges are better understood. However, I can never say for what goes on behind closed doors in treatment centres for any sort. There can still be nurses and doctors who behave like what is seen in this game. I will say with most certainty that the path to the knowledge we have now on these matters was also paved with the blood of those who suffered at the hands of madmen such as these. Madmen who may still exist today.

Hey anyone else realise that the yellow imaginary friend (I thinks its charlottes) is actually a voodoo doll wearing a Straitjacket which was worn in the times that the game is based for the mentally insane? Even if they were kids who had done nothing wrong. Its really sad...

I even paused the video at the start to read the content warning in full and sat through this entire video anyway. Gotta say, I love the designs of the imaginary friends, but man was this entire experience heart wrenching and painful, I was raised by a monster that thought these kinda places shouldn't of been shut down and, among other things, had threatened to send both of his offspring to a mental hospital if we acted up and I seem to recall he even mentioned something about lobatomies at some point... Though that might've been related to a different combo and his reading hobbies as a kid... Ngl my response every time Ryan asked how these characters could treat the kids yhis way in this game is because, they're not people, not in such monsters' eyes, and I appreciate the way this subject was handled. Didn't play things up like horror games love to do and toned things down enough to be stomachable. I didn't know I was on the autism spectrum until I was 18 because mom knew but feared the consequences of an official diagnosis, but she passed away when I was around... I think 12, though it's a bit of a blur, time just kinda stopped mattering at some point and I've tended to have delayed emotional responses, possibly ever since she got sick. Wish I'd had any support, though I am still greatful I was born either after or around the time the last of these places closed because I wouldn't wish such treatment on anyone, it's horrible, though I suppose the path we now walk today, with all it's medical advances, had to be paved somehow... Just wish we lived in a better timeline where history wasn't written in blood and suffering... That all aside, questionable video to watch in the middle of the night while I'm having trouble sleeping, but who needs sleep anyway? I have an 8BitRyan video to watch instead! Seriously though, I love picking apart all the little details on the imaginary friends, like how the green one has crayons for fingers, someone had to have had a ton of fun designing these characters and I love their models. This game was so good and I know I would be in one of those asylums if I wasn't born in the year that I was born in. I absolutely hate how they treated people with mental illnesses that they can't control. I have Autism and I love how this game represented different types of mental illness.

i genuinely believe that is one of the best stories in indie horror that i have ever seen and especially recently. i was just completely blown away with how detailed the story became as it progressed and how drawn to it and the characters i was. i love how the dev told this story while taking inspiration from history. i absolutely loved the twist with hollow and her trading her eyes for more time with someone she cares so deeply for. just wanted to say how much i love this game and so glad ryan played it so i could witness this masterpiece!!!

I love this happy ending for Anthony and his friends and their imaginary friends and i can't wait to see the sequel of this game. 😀😀😀😀

This was actually such a cool game! I love Pooky so much! Along with Hollow and Polo! Honestly, all the characters were amazing and I am so so glad that Nic lived since it typically is a cliché were the person dies like that!

I guess the first sacrifice Hollow made was her color? The second being her eyes. This asylum is stronger than every single army in the world💀. Pooky being able to lit a full building on fire within seconds, and become a literal walking magma, smash/melt Boris's head within a stomp while leaving a trail of flame. Hollow being able to time travel. This is just 2 out of the 8 imaginary friends.

Man, this game is a work of art, I'm glad I got to witness it. Also, I want an imaginary friend to dismember the ankles of people who give me grief too, I love Hollow for that. (Thank you Ryan for being amazing and playing this game, the experience of watching it was amazing.)

Ryan, if you're a fan of quirky character designs, music (possibly even rhythm gameplay) and fast-paced action, which i know you are because you're a fan of DMC and various rhythm games: I strongly implore you to look up and play No Straight Roads and keep an eye on the upcoming Genokids. NSR is a short, boss-centric hack-and-slash game with style for days, and Genokids is about a rock band fighting off an alien invasion with gameplay like aforementioned DMC.

Grant Marrs ABSOULUTLY COOKED with this game

I was in a mental hospital in 2017. It wasn't as bad as this, however there was a distinct feeling that the nurses didn't see us as human, even the doctor in some aspects. They would talk about patients behind their backs, mock us, talk down to us. The doctor even threatened me with electroshock therapy because I wasn't improving. At the time I wasn't aware that electroshock therapy was illegal so I agreed because I was desperate for an answer to stop my mental breakdowns. I will never go back to a mental hospital again. They do not care if you get better. You're just a number to them.

This was such a good game, The story was great and my god it was nothing but a roller-coaster of emotion, but in a good way. It does suck to think stuff like this did happen back in the past, I love seeing stuff like this.

So apparently this is the prequel to another game or a continuation by the same developer called "the friends we left behind" would love to see a play through for it as well. I've check it out it's seems pretty good as well

I loved everything about this game. Especially the interesting way the concept of imaginary friends were used. Like a darker toned anime.

I remember seeing a trailer for this game many months ago on the game's Steam page and honestly forgot about it completely until Ryan uploaded this video. I watched this all in one sitting and it was so good, I was so invested in the story and wanted to cry a few times :D I rarely get emotional with games, so the story was really well made since it made me feel a lot of things! I really hope there's gonna be a sequel, would love to see it!

I haven't even finished the video yet but I want to thank the game devs for handing such a topic. I'm an autistic person with fibromyalgia (a congenital chronic pain disease), if I had been born like 50 years ago I would've been sent to an asylum like this, and most likely I wouldn't have survived.

Hollow traded her appearance for his life back the first time Anthony died, then years later after he became an adult, wracked with guilt about the disappearance of his friends, Hollow offered to trade her hair to turn back time again, but the beings from The Void wouldn't accept and instead took her eyes. But Hollow didn't mind as long as she knew that she could still keep Anthony and his friends safe 🥲🤍
