I played your video twice and still didn’t notice! Ugh! I have an urgent question after a video that came on my feed and I trust you above all mentors: the woman said she lost chickens to feeding them sunflower seeds daily as the fats aren’t good for their livers. (Note: the chicks she bought came with Marek’s. I had mine vaxed.) Every single home made recipe has a substantial amount of sunflower seeds in them for the protein! I do feed Scratch n Peck mash because it’s less processed and add a little black oil sunflower seed every other day for the added protein. Plus, I’ve been giving the girls 2 suet cakes from your recipe once a week with the coconut oil. They also get S&P scratch in the afternoon with a little more corn added as we are getting colder. Is there such a thing as “too much fat”?!? How do I know what is too much?? Their feed consumption goes up and down. Some days it’s about 2 cups for 6 hens (22 weeks) and sometimes it’s less. I really cut the treats down with greens/squash being the most given. My girls seem very healthy and perky! They love free-ranging the grass and in the woods with me as their “body guard”! I’m so tired of worrying. I will bet you did a video on this!

@@ASmileAdayful There is too much conflicting info for us newbies. My hens aren’t fat in the least. My leghorn is very slim and I always make sure she gets her own treats. But, I will err on the side of caution and not give black oil sunflower seeds as often. I’m more concerned that they’re 22 weeks and I see zero eggs.

@@lrg613 Oh my goodness I saw that woman's video as well and I felt so bad for her! Between the Marek's and the fatty liver, I'm sure she's really going through it. I hate to see that she is blaming herself, though, because honestly, if she was feeding a balanced diet it is more likely to be a genetic issue more than anything else. I am hesitant to go against what the folks who did the necropsy told her, however, their conclusions are certainly influenced by studies done in factory farms. Chickens are scavengers and have for millennia adapted to a variety of foods. This doesn't mean that overfeeding can't happen in a backyard flock, but in a flock that has enough space, enough enrichment, and a balanced diet, I'd say it's probably not anything she did. ❤

My chickens love mice. The extra protein in the cold of winter along with greens and scratch grains keeps them laying. The guinea hunts mice and kills them, then calls the hens to feast on them. All of the cats and poultry like to hang out near the haystacks looking for mice. Quite entertaining to watch, especially when the cats are fussing and playing with their prey and a fast hen runs up and robs from them! Love your videos.

I often make herbal tea with loose leaf herbs. As long as they are chicken safe ones, I always give the flock the strained out herbs after it's done steeping. They adore it and it gets them some extra nutrition. Rose petals and holy basil seem to be favorites, but they seem to like most things I use in tea. Sometimes I make them their own batch of tea so they have a nice warm drink. Obviously, never give black tea or others with caffeine and/or artificial flavors.

We were also so afraid to let our dog out with our chickens too at first..... But we really wanted to let our chicken's free range in the fenced in back yard which was the dog area too, we would swap them out during the day and that got old quick.... So, what we did was put him on a leash and walked with him close to the chickens.... We also carried a rake with us just as a persuader and a block just in case.... We were firm, but not mean to him. You have to get them use to each other.. Now with ours, we were lucky...But that's how we did it, each dog, each breed is different... Congratulations and good luck.

I also ferment to my Chicken Feed. I have a 5 gallon bucket going at all times. I use the one bucket method, and have been doing it for years. Another thing I do is that I feed all my chickens, no matter what their age grow or feed. With oyster shell on the side. Chickens need protein. And lots of it. I do provide supplemental light, I live in Washington state, and I just turn the light on in the coop this week. It's on a timer, and it comes on about 2 AM.

How do you ferment with one bucket?
@nogames8982
@nogames8982 4 месяца назад
@@jenniferdelgado8806 start out with one part water to one part feed. You can toss in a little bit of apple cider vinegar if you want to. stir it once a day. After three days, it will be fermented. Start feeding the chickens. When the bucket starts to get low add in more feed and more water. The existing fermented feed. Will ferment the new stuff within 24 hours or so so you just keep feeding. Two or three times a year I clean out the bucket completely and start over but you don't have to. Get a food safe bucket from tractor supply and go for it. so easy. No need for multiple buckets etc.

A quick way to remove chlorination from your water is to place a piece of charcoal, activated carbon, even wood or your finger into the water for a few minutes.... plastic does not work well... the organic material inserted will quickly absorb most of the chlorine gas in the water... If you test for chlorine comparing an untreated with organic material cup versus a cup that was treated, the treated cup will often show little to no chlorine remaining. It was a demonstration used by many charcoal filter vendors, but as a chemist I know that chlorine is quickly absorbed... which is why after a shower or swimming in a public ppol, you often get that chlorinated taste and effect in your body... you and the other swimmers/showeres absorbed most of the chlorine in the water that came in contact with your skin.
@n2skcmo
@n2skcmo 7 месяцев назад
You could also just leave the water out for 24 hours and let the chlorine evaporate.
@shdwbnndbyyt
@shdwbnndbyyt 7 месяцев назад
@@n2skcmo My method eliminates any chloramines that were used in water treatment or formed from the reaction of the chlorinating source with any amino acids or ammonia/urea, etc in the treated water as it flowed from the treatment plant to your home.... A lot of older municiple water systems are quite old. Akron Ohio had water mains that were over 100 years old back in the 1980's when I lived there, and contamination was common. In certain parts of the city the water often had a brownish tinge and a thin scum would form if you boiled the water.

He either didnt feel like roosting with them becase of bullying or just didnt feel like pushing his way into their little loft since they tend to block the opening, perhaps he didnt see any room. I was beyond heart broken, especially since he froze alone. Im devastated but even if i had placed him up in the loft, usually my presence wakes everyone up and the come down to be nosey. They used to have a variety of seed and grain, but the past few months we open the bags to find mostly wheat grain and hardly anything else. My chickens have stopped laying with this feed. It is normal for them to slow down in winter, but they completely stopped and it coincided with the dietary change. And yes, I have compared the bag from what we used to get and what we get now, the labels are exactly the same, but what is in the bag is entirely different. Please tell me I'm not alone in this, no one seems to be talking about it online.

Im bad. I used to get test pop. Popcorn has to b popped to check the moisture. Free & they loved it. Winter i got bread that was under/over bakedfrom sandwich shops. Nice supplement & switch of diet. Also not the best is stale chips... but chickens escape, they come running when u shake the bag... great for pigs & goats too

Hi Dahlia, does your netting help deter the hawks? I set up a netting like that, but the hawk still came to the chicken area & got 4 of my babies! So sad!!

I kept a few easter eggers and gave the rest of the chickens away so that I could order a new flock last April first. So the few old chickens give us a few eggs, but I am getting a few Cuckoo Maran eggs. Small but they are starting. Because we are in cold eastern Wa. I DON'T EXPECT MUCH UNTIL END OF Jan.

The real snow started here, but not too much for the chickens to stay "inside" yet. Once the temperatures stay below freezing I stop feeding the fermented feed because it just freezes. I grow barley sprouts all winter to supplement their pellets. Yes, the trays take over part of the kitchen, but I have complete snow cover 4-5 months every year. I'm gonna check out your flock block recipe.

I 've noticed over the last 3 months their layer grains have changed 😣 Last month the bag was full of empty hills. Noticed the color is different and the girls hardly eat any of it-they just throw it out !#$@! Been looking for a new layer grain. Your not crazy- your right on the money!

How do keep fermented feed from freezing? I don't have electricity out in our yard so I can't use a heated dish. We have below zero to teen temps coming in Kansas this week. Winter is always a stretch because I can't ferment or grow sprouts or give them warm oats or polenta because everything freezes. Is there any way other than electricity to keep their food warm enough to not freeze? I'm pretty creative but haven't figured it out. Do you ever answer any of these questions?

I live in the city and have to keep my chickens confined in a run. We have built them deluxe accommodations. We love our girls. However, I have been leaving the feed out for them so they can free feed rodents and other critters can get into the chicken enclosure. Is it bad for me to leave the feed out for them? Will they overeat?

Is it okay to feed my flock layer feed if I have a rooster?
@amyheath8261
@amyheath8261 7 месяцев назад
Different people say different things, layers pellets have higher calcium than a rooster needs. Some people say it’s fine, others don’t.

I use lay pellets because it is more efficient 9:49 t. I keep 2 roosters with 7 maran hens in one pen, Auracannas have a rooster , flock of 8, 20 assorted hens,flock of 18 in larger shed and pen have 3 roosters. The roosters are for just keeping the hens happy.

I keep giving the girls pep talks and Big Girl is laying in the nesting box with the fake eggs every night. Still waiting.

@@sararose1966 Finally getting eggs this week! The Leghorn produced first and the first few were squishy. I put a separate bowl of oyster shell out since the combination grit/calcium wasn’t cutting it and the shells are perfect the last few days. Someone else with a light brown shell also started laying yesterday. I have to go back and look who lays what color since they lay mid-morning and I always miss it.

We free range our chickens, but I also always make pellets and some kitchen scraps available. But my chickens WILL NOT eat greens. They leave them behind every time. Any suggestions?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 7 месяцев назад
Sounds like they have access to a lot of greenery from free ranging. Maybe once they don't have access to grass they will try the greens? I wouldn't worry about it too much but you could also try only giving them as much feed as they will finish by the afternoon, and then giving them some greens for the second half of the day. ❤️

My girls LOVE shrimp trails. I give them oyster shells (for calcium), so I figured why not try shrimp tails? (We only eat shrimp once or twice every few months, but when we do, they get the scraps). I figure they are smart and wouldn't eat it unless it benefits them in some sort of way. (Except for Styrofoam, keep that FAR away from them. They're really not that smart when it comes to that stuff 😂)
