One of the things I like about those acid brushes is you can cut them shorter with scissors or a sharp chisel, and it stiffens them up a lot. Or, if you cut them on a skew, they can get into really small spaced or detailed work.
The two cheapest and most used tools in my DIY toolbox came from a 'Pound Shop' (Dollar Store) and literally cost £1 each here in the UK. A small hammer and a bradawl. I use both tools nearly every time I do some work. The small hammer is great for small nails, pins and staples where a big hammer would be too heavy. The bradawl for marking before cutting, poking a pilot hole for a screw, clearing out a drilled hole of sawdust, measuring the depth of a hole, stirring a small pot of paint, opening up the end of a glue cartridge that got blocked, even flicking a lost screw from under a skirting board.
That self abuse with face shields had me in stitches! Epic! Shame we can't get any of these tools in NZ...I'd have'em all! This is one of my favourites from Stumpy Nubs...but I can't tell you how many times I've learned and used tips or tools as seen on your show! Damn it's good. My favourite go-to video channel! Important tip on the TweezerMan tweezers: yes, they are awesome (I have a different model), but they have a pretty big issue with counterfeits when sold online, so it's usually best to buy them in store when possible to make sure you're getting the real thing. Target carries some models, beauty stores carry more.
Have a splinter? The best tool for removing them is a hypodermic needle. Spade-shaped and razor sharp with an ever-so-gradual hook at the tip. This is the tool you want for removing an embedded splinter. It's the best thing for getting in and under the splinter and lifting it out, when other methods typically push the splinter deeper.
Just a idea on the glue brushes. If you want to reuse them, keep a water bottle (with some water in it) handy and just drop the brush in, recap. I think it should work. I use old or bulk pack toothbrushes for edge gluing and the water bottle works great for those. The toothbrush spreaders work ok and can be trimmed to size.
Leaky Blast Gates- I need some of those clearvuecyclone gates - Nice piping setup! Here’s a possible idea, I now use 5” stretch wrap - the kind that comes with a cardboard handle -to pre wrap things like airtight fittings. The problem with permanent tape (aluminum, duct, electrical or paper tape) is residue. - To make sure the stretch plastic holds in place (usually unnecessary), I put some sticky tape over top of the stretch plastic wrap joint. That way I can easily take the fittings apart by cutting the plastic stretch wrap with scissors and there isn’t any residue or stubborn cleanup on the pipe and fittings.
My daughter picked up the 29 piece Fisch brad point bit set for Christmas. These things are terrific. No more cheap-chinese-tools twist drills in my woodworking!
a lot of that tools is hard to find here at brazil and the shipping and taxes makes kinda impossible to access but is very good to know their existence to find something does (kinda) the same job! tyvm!
I got the face shield yesterday, Tuesday 12/21, and wore it today while clearing 4" of snow. It works fine. It doesn't really fog up and helps to keep my face warm. But, because of the warmth of my breath, it causes the snow to melt and it's a bit of a problem seeing through it. I'll just take a soft cloth with me to wipe it off periodically.
As a fellow wearer of glasses, protective eyewear has always been a pain to use so I often didn't. I found the Honeywell face shield about a year and a half ago and now I use it always. It is super comfortable, stays open when open, and is really quite good at being non-fogging. Great collection of affordable shop toys!
Do you have any issues with it getting statically charged in any way? I have a cheap Chinese shield that is covered in fine dust in seconds when sanding or turning..
@@JkKarlsson I saw a hint about this a couple of years ago... Use either RainX or drier sheets on the shields, but can't remember which... I think it came from Next Level Carpentry.
I need to be faster! I ordered a couple of these items, but apparently so did many other people. At least one item will take a month to arrive. I have a face shield. I use the wire mesh shield often, generally when using the chain saw. I use the plastic shield some. I will see if I like the "Bionic" shield better and use it more often. I do have proper safety glasses, with side shields, which I use in the shop.
The bad news is its too late to ask Santa for stuff. The good news is my birthday is coming up soon! I could easily see myself using every one of those items. Thanks for the great ideas. Hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas and New Year.

Your list of past recommendations included the Nail Holder. I bought one when you first recommended it, and use it very often. I liked it so much that I gave one to my son. I have an acid brush that must be five years old. I plop it into a jar half full of water when done spreading glue. If I need to reuse it right away I have a paper towel to squeeze the water out of the bristles and spread some more glue. When finished with a glue up I run the brush under running water to flush glue away, rinse out the jar, and put jar and brush on a little shelf above the sink. In five years I must have saved 100 times 11 cents or $11.00 dollars. Cheese burger money! Yum, Yum.
same on giving up on all the other new "tools" for spreading glue and going back to the acid brush. those are a lot cheaper than ive been buying though, good find.
Hi James I want to mention a really good affordable item every shop and or tool box should have. I found at Wal-Mart checkouts is a round 3.5" magnifying mirror in case you get something in your eye if you don't find at the checkouts look elsewhere mine has come in handy many times hang one up at eye level. I even have one in my glove box. Protect mirror from scratches by putting in a zip bag.
That little razor saw really is great, I mostly just keep mine by the lathe for separating parts that I don't want to part off completely but it's a capable little saw for lots of jobs.
I saw a RU-vid video of a Japanese furniture maker using razor saws for hand cutting joints. It seems that razor saws are used widely in Japan as a normal tool. Mind you, they were very fine tools and like all blades in Japan extremely high quality.
Some great ideas here. I like the hold downs, but they are not available locally. What I can get are F clamps exactly the right size, so 20 minutes per clamp on the metal lathe and welder and I have the same thing for about NZ$12. The face shield is another great idea. I was looking for better safety glasses this week after feeling a woodchip from the table saw hit my cheek. That mask is so much better and I am sure I can find one locally. The Perspex Ys were a reminder that I should put proper extraction on my New Years resolution list. My wife is very understanding, but I must spend at least two or three hours a week cleaning up after myself, and the two big vacuums I use are almost as big as a proper extractor.
Machinist's tip for splinters: If you don't need the pointy ones you can use calipers. I'd say they're even better than flat tipped tweezers because they're so sturdy.
While sharp tweezers are helpful for splinters, _NOTHING_ can beat a glucose meter lancet. They are sharpened in such a way that they are basically micro-scalpels. Just by brushing one across your skin, you are able to slice through it like it wasn't even there, then stick it into the splinter so it can be dragged out. (They are also *fantastic* for dealing with pimples/blackheads/etc.) While you can buy a box of a hundred for less than ten bucks, you can also ask your local pharmacist for a few samples. Definitely something everyone should have in their home and shop. Cheers!
I have that face shield, and it has saved me stitches or worse more than once when a turning blank let go. I won't even turn on my lathe without it, and I'll sometimes wear it for a couple of hours with no fatigue at all.
The Zona saw is a surprisingly useful tool! I got one several months ago in a package deal with an aluminum miter box with thin kerf slots at 90, 60 & 45 degrees. Don’t confuse this saw and miter box with the ones sold in hobby stores by other manufacturers! Those typically have a so-so saw, and a miter box that features slots about three times the thickness of the blade! Two hints: At times, I’ve had the blade start to feel “sticky” in the cut, and I’ve found that a quick application of Pepe Lube (a dry lubricant used by jewelry makers, and sold by Pepe Tools) will have it sailing through the wood with ease! Hint #2 is if you buy the miter box too, cut a rectangular piece of thin plywood or wood and lay in the box. It will keep the saw teeth out of the aluminum when the cut is completed! Great vid!
I have a thin saw plus miter box, and I just verified that it is the Zona saw, sold by amazon under the name Olson. I use it all the time, and I'm not even a woodworker. It makes very nice, straight cuts in little things like dowels and pegs.
@@paulkolodner2445 Zona really raised the bar when they developed the thin kerf box! I’ve used an X-Acto razor saw and box for 30+ years and I never had issues with the saw. The sloppy box was always the weak link!
You can get small-tipped tweezers for about 75% cheaper if you look at ones marketing towards craft and electronics work, instead of one marketed as anti-splinter. It's the same thing.

Great video; now I have a nice Christmas list for myself! I spent the last few months building deck with Ipe which creates splinters that are so long, sharp, and strong that you almost have to admire them. Those Splintertweeze tweezers would have been very handy.
Bridge city delivery to the UK is preposterous - $134 cheapest shipping! $760 most expensive for the mini miter - I'm guessing it will be hand delivered... very cool, but no way!
Good recommendations! I bought one of those "ink brayer" rollers for spreading glue after the last time you mentioned them. They're amazingly useful. And I agree on the MicroJig push blocks. You'd think all push blocks would work the same, but the rubber on the MicroJig ones is _much_ grippier than any others I've tried. Not super cheap, but worth it!
I'm not sure I'm sold on the face shield. Can we see another demonstration of cheapie face shield in action. 🤔 Just kidding I have the better face shield and it is far superior. I honestly don't remember if it was a recommendation from one of Stubby's previous videos but I'm willing to bet it was.
All acid brushes shed a little at first. You gently pull the loose ones away before you use it. In the video you can see my pulling on a brush several times without them coming out.
@@StumpyNubs These kept shedding unto the 10th hole and beyond. I tried a couple more, and all I have to do is run the bristles across my fingers, and I get bristles. Even my HomeD throwaways do better.
For removing splinters... use a micrometer. The ends are perfectly parallel. Unless you pay a lot of attention to the tweezers you buy, the ends rarely match up correctly.

Seeing the push stick, made me think of my new table saw. My saw is a Ryobi BTS-11 that I just got a couple of years ago, and has the push stick "built in" to the top of the rip fence!! I DO like how the push stick is "available" where I need it, when I need it!! My only problem is when I need to use a jig on my rip fence I have no "alternative place" to set the push stick so it is "out of the way"!! My solution is I will be mounting a piece of PVC someplace on my saw soon!! I say "will be" because I hadn't really thought about a solution for this problem until LATE the past year and I have only owned the saw now for two years, AND it is now winter!! But I will be adding the PVC tube to the saw in a place where I can temporarily move the push stick when I need to move it!! This way I can still set the push stick back in the built in position when the saw is stored, and stash it when it is in the way!! Though I do love my saw....it has a number of "small problems" that solutions could fix it!! BUT you have to know I bought the saw that I did, because it was the only saw small enough to fit in the space I have allowed for it!!
Stuff is so cheap in the USA. The items you say all cost under $30 can cost up to $90 here in New Zealand. It's what we call "The New Zealand Tax". It's when retailers double the price of something because "New Zealand is so far away from everything and it's a tiny market".
Nice selection. I have a couple of them, the 11th finger is great and I use mine all the time. I actually got it free. I also have the push pads but not exactly the same one you showed. Works well but I find I have to clean the grippers often.

5:00 find the entry hole, grab a pencil, back of knife, etc. and push on the opposite side in front of the splinter so it goes back out the same way it came in. No tweezers necessary.
I have a pack of those brushes. They look like the same thing. I am a big fan of the disposable aspect, but ive found that the bristles tend to come out 1 or 2 at a time. Pretty annoying when you're trying to get a nice glue joint. I use my channel lock to clamp the tip of the aluminum handle to help hold them in place.
Same here. Tried spreading some 5 minute epoxy on a small cherry trim piece and had black hairs sticking all around. Yikes! Quick grabbed a rag and saved the project. Fix! This might work- squeeze to tighten the bristle crimp in a vice then rake the bristles with a wire brush to pull out loose hairs.
I am even cheaper than you Stumpy, I use my old toothbrushes for my glue spreaders, cleans easy, reusable, free! Thanks for the video, always enjoy your tips/tricks.
