Rod! Great video, I loved it! Days at the river are so much more than just simply fishing. The time you take to share your knowledge about fishing, the value and unique nature of different salmon species, and the importance of protecting the water shed are just a few of the take aways from this season. This was the first year I really dedicated a lot of time to salmon fishing, thanks to you! Only caught 2 coho and several chums - most trips I was out the entire day with no bites or anything. Can't wait for next year - hopefully I'm more successful. Will try steelheading this year too... doubt I'll have any luck but we'll see.

Caught my first vedder fish this year. 1 22lb spring, and three coho between 4-8 lbs. I’m hooked now. Just watching this makes me want to drive out and fish haha

You should fish the Vancouver Island areas more often...(as in "all" around the island [from Vic. to Pt. Hardy] around the N. tip of island & back down the west side of the island back to Vic.👍🤗✌️

There is no waste to any salmon: 1. Head - cut in half just like you did in the video and broil in the oven seasoned with salt. 2. Bones - pan sear or broil in oven. 3. Roe - get them off from the membrane with boiled water, rinse a few times in cold water, marinade in soy+sake, you have Ikura to make great sushi bowl. Or simply marinade in salty water. 4. Sperm - battered in the mixture of egg+water+flour, deep fry, makes the best tempura. 5. Stomach - save a bunch in the freezer, and makes good stir fry with spices.

Loved the cooking segment - really happy to see all the fish used. I caught some coho on the fly in the Chehalis this season. After having a section of filet frozen for two weeks we made nigiri sushi, and with the peeled off skin we put some butter in a frypan and fried the skin and ate it like potato chips. It was delicious!

Coho, Japanese mayo and dill in the oven 😋.

I cut salmon into roast sized pieces and cook what I dont freeze in roasting pan with onion and a little dark homemade beer.the onion and beer and juices from fish turn to nice jelly.My biggest coho so far 20 lbs and I have seen a chap at the cleaning table with a 30 lb. coho.Havent seen anything that big in 10 or 12 yrs. here in SOOKE.

I've always heard that the vedder gets super crowded around salmon season (heard it referred to as "combat fishing"). Is it really that bad? Looked ok in the video!

Rod, I've been watching your videos and trying to figure things out, I would not have much of a chance without your content, thank you for sharing. Tried bait casting and coho spoons. I managed to hook a 1 Pink (spoon) and 1 coho (roe) after long days of trying. QUESTION: On the spoon fishing, I understand to cast upstream, let it drop to the right depth and then slow retrieve....my question is do you let it keep hitting bottom as it drifts down river? I was doing that when I caught the pink. Otherwise how do you know what depth? Also, will Spring and Chum go for spoons as well? Thank you for your help!

Good on you Rod, for showing what to do with the parts of the fish that many simply throw away. I like using the entire fish too, especially to make delicious soup with the head and spine.

Hey rod, just wondering where u find these secluded spots on the Vedder. Every time I used to go it was packed with people and wasn't much fun, I'd definitely go out more if I could find a spot like this and like the spots in ur other videos

Haven't hooked up on a Coho yet all I can catch are chum.

I thought that once they start the migration they are not tasty anymore. We have Coho salmon in Ontario too, but they were introduced from BC.

its easy if you go to the rapids and drift into their holding spots

Hi Rod , when u process fish, I would recommend put paper towels under the fish, to prevent slip while holding sharp knifes. I didn’t try fishing this season yet, due to COVID-19. But your video already took me on the journey. Nice music!Thanks for great videos , as always👍

I have only seen guys do that with a bait caster lol throw with the right, witch to the left and reel with the right lol that’s a first for me

Last year, the brown trout and Atlantic salmon run was incredible on the Saranac River from Lake Champlain in Northern New York. This year has been the opposite. I have tried several times with no catch, only saw 2 fish hit the surface, and haven’t seen ANYONE else catch a fish. We had a drought this summer, so that may be part of it. Or it could just be an off year for spawning. Guess I will just have to go to Aldi’s.

Hi Rod, thanks for all your content over the years..my question is this; out of all the river species of salmon which would you say is most accessible for young adults? This year we have pink which I suspect you’’lol recommend but this coho fishing looks a little to challenging for My son in terms of probability of catching something. Thanks!

I don’t do any of that with my coho but that being said I’ve never caught one 🤣. But that’s normally what I do with my salmon just do a couple steps a bit differently. Well guess I’ve caught two coho but they were in a lake and were accidental. Keep up the awesome videos.

It's my first year fishing for salmon. So far 4 trips to Vedder & stave lake dam, 0 fish/4-5 bites. Just bought new rod, reel, wader, hope I have better success next year.

I enjoy watching your videos. Would love to fish up there in Canada some day. I use paper towels or my FilletAway fish mats to keep my fish from sliding around when filleting. I was cringing waiting for you to cut yourself. Just an observation. Nice job tho. I try to not waste fish as well. I scrape the backbone, in behind the collars, and save the belly meat. I package it all together and use it for chowders, salmon tacos, pasta dishes, etc...

Salmon head,skeleton, belly meat are great for making hot and sour soup...kind of like the Thai Thom-Yum soup.

Aaaaw I’m so happy for Jenna, she finally got one - her hard work paid off!! And yes it was definitely a hard season, but nonetheless, it is a very productive and promising fishery, I feel very lucky to live in BC. I can totally relate to how you felt when you lost that coho 😟 one day, I got one too, and right as I was reeling in... the wind.. it was so strong, it blew my line around the tip of my rod, never happened to me before, it was the first time.... so I lost the fish. A big one too! But luckily I did still land one that day as well ☺️ another time, it was so cold and wet, I couldn’t reel the centerpin properly - every time I set the hook, I feel the fish pulling, I lose it, because my hand is too cold to react lol 😂 I tried to steam a coho jack this year with some soy sauce mixed with hot oil poured on top and green onion and ginger. It taste absolutely amazing, so sweet and tender, melts in your mouth! ☺️☺️🐟🐟 tight lines! Thanks for sharing as always 😀

Nice video Rodney. Those lost fish sure hurt. I still remember that one you were trying to net for me, I had my drag set too tight from fishing the upper the day before. I was so mad at myself for snapping it off after the fish was practically on shore. It was a strange season for me, usually I catch a lot of jacks and wild coho along the way, but this year it was almost all hatchery. I only landed 4 wild coho and no jacks at all.

Great video, and it don’t matter how you fillet your fish, you eat everything and waste nothing, that’s how it is in our household too. Salmon is too good to waste.

You all haven’t really seen coho fishing until Alaska! Simple!

First year I tried salmon fishing the Vedder saw a bunch get caught and got a small jack myself but nothing significant

They only thing that makes salmon hard to catch is the lack of besides the ordinary challenge of it. Your lucky to have a hatchery nearby to give you eaters.

I could only catch one Jack coho this entire season, what methods would you recommend. I usually bait fish but willing to try something new.

I want to get into coho fishing here in Washington. What type of rod and reel is good to use. I don’t know how to use a casting reel just spinning reel.

1st year on the vedder. i made about 20 trips out and only caught 1 coho. Hopefully more next year!

Went to the vedder and fished a few times this year, nothing amazing but regardless a beautiful place to enjoy the day.

how is coho salmon fishing mid november?

Hey Rod, love your videos. Last year I caught my first coho on a Gibbs Koho. No luck this year, but have caught a few chum. When chucking spoons for coho, do you recommend fast or slow moving water? Shallow runs or deeper pools? It looks like the water you were in at the beginning was pretty shallow and fast moving? Do you "drift" your spoon?
