I really appreciate that man, and what you’re seeing is really the main hope I have for these videos. I want to reveal the depth of human capability in a way that inspires people to push further and it’s incredible to see you articulate the same idea. I also view strength (and life in general) in the same vain as what you’re describing. All the real power is in the flow and relation of things working smoothly, and much less about white knuckled tryhard efforts and continually bashing your head against a wall (as many people often do in fitness) Thanks for watching!

A combination of them all. Took it slow and “prepped” each one. One step at a time slowly grabbed the bar and finished with thumb positioning and playing around with trying to get max force through my fingertips. Once felt in a good place did a few. Practicing not going to failure of my back, but to slowly increase quality reps with this correct hand grip. Prep order currently: lateral tension -> hinge -> thumb

As a wrestler(and a pretty decent one at that) I’ve found that my grip tends to be my weakest link. The thing that gives out first and the thing that prevents me from performing certain pinning combinations altogether. I would definitely appreciate a video on grip strength for grappling and perhaps on other strategies to strengthen grip.
@kainickname
@kainickname 22 дня назад
Alexander Bromley's video on grip strength is as detailed as you'll probably need it to be, my forearms exploded over the last few months of direct training and I have no problem holding cradles and pins. We need a little bit more emphasis on isometric strength, in my opinion hanging from a bar for time is enough. Farmer/suitcase carries are great for it too, but if you start using them for grip specifically, they train so much of the other body parts that you need to balance your programming so it doesn't interfere with the other stuff.

THIS ACTUALLY FEELS CRAZY! Ive always had issues with back engagement and shoulder issues and they almost instantly clear up when using the correct grip! ive been using neutral thumb rotation for everything and it did work fine but it wasnt really good but NOW if i purposefully use internal or external for certain exercices the muscle engagement is MIND BLOWINGLY DIFFERENT. For Lateral raises especially external thumb rotation seems SOOO much more natural and acc doesnt hurt (which is an issue ive had for a years). So thanks a lot for this video, Im always learning things when i thought i already knew most of bodybuilding advices and basic mecanics. edit: I went to the gym todaty and tried internal for all pushing and external for pulling and damn ive never felt this good, i wanted to stay there for 3h tbh but had to stop it after 1h30 because i just couldnt do any more reps in ANYTHING ffs

I had already known about this through experimentation. I am hypermobile and double jointed so I assumed that was why i could do this. I see now anyone can do this. But what is amazing to me is when you made the comparisons to other parts of the body. My entire life I have avoided deadlifts due to injuries while performing the lift. I never thought to do the same thing with my spine and back as with my fingers to in essence lock your upper body. It's probably going to be a lot harder but the difference is now at least I will be working the proper muscles and strengthening them instead of simply injuring myself. Im 48 years old with Ehlers Danlos syndrome which makes me hyper-flexible and this video makes sense to me. Excellent content subbed 100%. I can't wait to try it. Don't worry I'll play it safe and only use the bar or light dumbells at first!

@darwinianfitness7311 19 дней назад
I’ve had something similar happen from jujitsu and I think it was a failure to maintain proper lateral tension in my fingers that caused the injury. I really doubt you’re “damaged” in any meaningful way even if you felt pops. My suspicion is that you could probably rehab the issue either by incorporating these cues and training static holds for a bit, or maybe worst case through some sort of finger extensor training (this can be achieved by extending your fingers against a rubber band). You’ll know if I’m right if the resulting pump from either creates a temporary effect of significant pain relief, or the sense that the joint has become “well oiled” and smooth. If that’s the case just gradually progressing should steadily reverse the issue. Hope this helps! Ps: I’m a huge fan of your channel Eli, and I’ve been watching your stuff since I was a kid. If I had to guess why the thumb mechanics work, I'd guess it's something to do with wrist rotations and counter-rotations. (When training with club bells and similar tools with a center of mass that's outside the hand in a hammer grip you have to engage the thumb in these ways to twist it or hold it in place against gravity.) It could be that stabilizing the wrist or creating that feeling of stability convinces the mind to recruit more muscle fibers along the upper body chain too -- that's just my thought on why it would have an impact on shoulder efforts. Might also have something to do with hanging on tree branches and the kind of efforts you need to make to swing or realign your body when doing that, since that's a big part of why we have hands and shoulders.

Great observations and detail. I think I have naturally been using these techniques without knowing. Even when accelerating as a sprinter, my start was so good people started copying my hand position. I think we are winding up the fascia

Best of luck! I find it very useful to practice these grip cues on your own wrist so you can feel the differences and adjust more easily. Done well, the combination of cues should create a pressure between the finger pads and knuckles that is very hard to slip out of

Many grapplers do use some of these cues instinctively. It was actually running up against them and feeling the crazy disparity in gripping ability that lead me to start trying to articulate these ideas. Thanks for watching!

Dude it’s crazy how night and day this is. I’ve been struggling to do pull ups, but after using a proper grip I cranked out a set of 5. I’ve been struggling to hit hard enough in armored combat, but can’t wait to try this out with a sword

That’s awesome! in my upcoming grip video for grappling I’ll actually be covering something I’ve been calling a “buckler” grip, which is essentially an extrapolation of ideas related in thumb pushing/internal rotation, and allows the hand and arm to become hugely reinforced in piercing and deflection motions. I apply the concept for achieving under hooks, but I’m sure you’ll find probably find it even more applicable with an actual weapon designed for those actions. Super exciting to see this video having such a wide audience of violence connoisseurs

I say play with both and see if one gives you a pump that makes your shoulders feel “well oiled” or pain free. Something that didn’t make the cut in this video is that changing my thumb position on some lifts rehabbed a very stubborn shoulder problem I just couldn’t tap into otherwise, and it sounds like you’re toying with a similar concept. For me at a least a protracted thumb was the move. But you might have something different, and you can’t go wrong with some good old trial and error. Hope this helps.
