In this movie reaction we are watching The Raid: Redemption (2011). We have been watching a lot of foreign films on our channel lately (specifically martial arts related movies) and The Raid: Redemption was so highly requested that we had to check it out! A rookie member of an elite team of commandos, Rama (Iko Uwais) is instructed to hang back while his comrades-in-arms go ahead with their mission to take down a brutal crime lord called Tama (Ray Sahetapy). However, the team's cover is blown, and Tama offers sanctuary to every criminal in his high-rise apartment block in exchange for the cops' heads. Now Rama must take command and lead his remaining team on an ultraviolent charge through the building to complete -- and survive -- the mission.

John Woo's "The Killer" (1989) isn't a martial arts movie (although gunfighting really is a martial art), but it's a classic Hong Kong action melodrama. Wonderfully acted with gorgeous cinematography, it is one of the most beautiful and most elegiac of Hong Kong's "Heroic Bloodshed" genre, and I consider it John Woo's best film. It's also the movie that introduced the charismatic Choy Yun Fat to mainstream western audiences (he was already a major star in Asia and had an international cult following). "Hard Boiled" (1992), alsdo starring Chow Yun Fat, is Johh Woo's most over the top exciting movie. While "The Killer" is like a Shakespearean tragedy with gunplay, "Hard Boiled" is more like a roller coaster ride, and it does include some good martial arts from a bad guy (also named Mad Dog) you may find yourself rooting for. "The Man From Nowhere" (2010) is Korean action movie with heart. A shattered man who used to be a special forces operative, regains his humanity protecting a neglected child from ruthless drug traffickers. Interestingly, the director chose to use Filipino martial arts rather than Korean because he wanted a style that looked quick and efficient rather than flashy. "Sicario" (2015) Isn't foreign or martial arts and not really action either, but describing "Man From Nowhere" reminded me of the sequel "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" (2018). Both of these are powerful films with some intense action scenes that you should watch because they are great for starting discussions about both cinematic technique and about philosophy/ethics.

The Raid 2 was originally going to be The Raid 1 but they had no budget for that movie so with low budget they make this "The Raid" first to gather money (that's why the shooting was mostly in that building) and see the audience reaction (and it works, MASSIVELY). The Raid 2 was a masterpiece (crazy actions everywhere, interesting plot, creative fighter character, lot of settings, etc)

Some suggestions: "Ong Bak" (2003, Thailand). It has two sequels but as far as I remember I liked the first the most ; "Revenger" (2018, S.Korea) ; "The Night comes for us" (2018, Indonesia) with the same actors as The Raid ; "Headshot" (2016, Indonesia) ; "The Villianess" (2017, S.Korea) Just remembered some other movies: "SPL / Killzone" (2005, Hong Kong) and "SPL2 / Killzone2" (2015, Hong Kong) ; "Police Story" (1985' Hong Kong) I think it has about 5 sequels ; "Flash Point" (2007, Hong Kong)

Randomly got your channel recommended for your first Ip Man reaction. Glad you guys liked it, but yooo The Raid is definitely my favorite Martial Arts movie, so glad you loved it. I would recommend "The Fist of Legend" with Jet Li (it's a bit older but it was basically the Ip Man before Ip Man came out). Also Chocolate (2008) if you want a dope MA movie with a female lead. Looking forward to more reactions!

This film was an effort by the filmmaker to introduce Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat to world cinema. It started with "Merantau (2009)" then "The Raid 1 (2011)" and "The Raid 2 (2014)". Followed by "Headshot (2016)" and "The Night Comes For Us (2018)" by different director but still mostly with Raid team. Most of the fight choreography in those films are based on Pencak Silat fighting style. I recommend watching them all (in order). 🙂👍

You should react to the sequel. It's probably be the best fight movie ever. Other recommendations are the man from nowhere(2010), not quiet like this, but a brilliant action film with great storyline and characters. Train to busan(2016),imo the best zombie movie ever made. If you want early Jackie Chan movies, watch project A(1985), Who am i(1998), wheels on meals(1984),police story 1, police story 3: supercop(imo the best in the series). That was a fantastic reaction. You two caught SO MUCH that most people miss their first time through. And I could tell by the small bits you didn't catch or stumbled on that it wasn't from a pre-watch, that was just genuine good observation. I still consider The Raid to be the greatest "martial arts" film ever made, mostly because the story and atmosphere around it was so well-done. Script, camera, choreography, lighting, plot, character development, literally everything was done right. Good catch on the camera work, I love how you both started to notice that this was shot like an A-list cinematographer with the angles, camera movement, and lighting.

since you guys love anime and are now exploring martial arts movies, you should definitely watch kung fu hustle. it's the closest thing to a live action anime.

Next the sequel THE RAID 2
@rizurper
@rizurper 2 года назад
The sequel The Raid 2, however, it's way more brutal, more violent, and more gory. The choreography is still awesome. Do at your own risk (: Other works from these guys: MERANTAU, the first movie of these guys, has same director. Decent story, but it's not as brutal as the Raid. Can you spot which one is Mad Dog here? The Night Comes for Us, the Sarge from the Raid plays as the mc, but the mc of The Raid plays as villain, different director. It's 5x more brutal than The Raid 2. Has better story. Other martial arts movie that worth to try: Rurouni Kenshin, a samurai movie, great visual and fight scenes. Kung Fu Hustle, martial arts with comedy touch. Ong Bak, classic Muay Thai

That amazing guy who played the top henchman is Yayan "Mad Dog" Ruhian, an Indonesian Martial Arts Master, primarily of "Silat". (To oversimplify it terribly, Silat is a family of Indigenous martial arts, which for centuries was only passed down by mouth, not writing, that emphasizes mobility and using the ground to your advantage, so it's very low-to-the-ground, fast, and intense, with knees and forearms flying everywhere.) Fun Trivia: Ruhian was hired as a fight choreographer for an earlier movie ("Merantau") from this same director, but they couldn't find an actor who could handle both the acting and fighting required, so Ruhian auditioned and got the part. He's also in John Wick 3, should you ever get to that movie ;)

Yayan Ruhian, who plays Mad Dog< is also in "The Raid 2: Berandal" playing a completely different character. He's still an incredible badass, but he may also make you cry because his character is so tragic. It's not giving away any of the plot to explain his back story. He's the most loyal assassin long time friend of one of the gang bosses in the movie and helped the boss rise to power. He and the boss are so close to the boss that he has been like an uncle to the boss' son. Years ago, he lived the rich life with the money he earned as an assassin, and attracted a young woman who eventually married him and had a son with him. When she found out that he was a professional killer, she left him in disgust and took their son with her. Since then, as a form of self imposed punishment for his sins, he lives homeless on the streets, but he's still completely loyal to the crime boss and answers the call whenever the boss needs him. Meanwhile, his wife only lets him see her when she meets him so he can give her the money he's earned and forbids him from seeing their son.
