when it comes to training we are all our own worst enemy. I’ve been bit by overtraining, it’s hard to slow down when you are really motivated

From my limited vantage point it really sounds like taking a week off for mild COVID was a taper and then you killed 2 weeks of workouts bc you were fresh, and week 3 the fatigue was catching up w you. And then the down weeks you didn’t actually come down compared to the totally off week. Point is, if you are going to train train, and if you are going to taper, taper. Anyone else see this story clear as day?

As a coach and triathlete myself, I can say that your coach is right about those changes. I saw what you did (on Strava and RU-vid) and can tell I have been thinking for a long time those changes were necessary. Listen to him. You got your lesson ! (and, for sure Covid played a big if not the main role in your perf. I thought, after seing that on Strava, that your race would be a DNS!)

This also confused me tbh. Not sure what the coach means about it taking a year to adapt to a new type of training, never heard of such a thing.

@@mattlogan1it’s definitely a thing in the track world- it usually takes a yr of training under a new coach for an athlete to return to their pb form

At around 9:20 you mentioned the brain protecting the body. Check out Tim Noakes as he has extensively researched and coined “central governor theory” which explains this to a T. As athletes, when we attempt to push our bodies to new levels we have to overcome the “governor” and this needs to be done in training. Good stuff!!!
@bigbattenberg
@bigbattenberg 9 месяцев назад
There is a point there. As a runner I know the feeling. Also I've picked up a lot from people like Kneesovertoesguy on training where he says things like "you have to feel safe in this or that position." Which is exactly the point - the brain is a defense mechanism. i always say not having fear of heights (for example) is unnatural. I used to do trail runs back in the day on normal footwear and sprained an ankle multiple times. I never was comfortable on the high elevation, cushioned shoes and every step felt like a gamble. After I switched to minimalist footwear everything changed and I now run completely uninhibited which shows in my results and recovery.

Havent watched yet but I was gonna say the carboload seemed way too excessive to me in that race video. But in all honesty I am slow age grouper. so what do I know.. but I think eating as you normally would is enough considering you are taking gels during the race... Dont forget it takes energy to actually digest food as well - thermodynamics. So when you use all those thermodynamics resources to digest and absorb food it actually leaves a small reserve of thermodynamics for other bodily functions...

I am a huge fan of you. But I am confused as to why you want to be a pro triathlete. There seems no gusto to your training. Looks like to just in slow motion and going through motions. Wish you a successful 2024. Training and racing are COMPLETELY two different concepts.

Great video. Two week taper and your worst result. Is the volume such a jump your body is struggling to absorb it? Love to see you in a year having become even more professional and disciplined in your personal admin and nutrition. Maybe that’s when heads will turn…. Hopefully you can tow the line in Kona?

You do sports long enough you're going to have bad outcomes. Doesn't mean it doesn't stink what happened, but you're going to have other opportunities to kick ass down the line. Looking forward to seeing what you do in the future! Exciting to see you have a coach and see what you do with it! Also, definitely don't blame yourself-as The Beaches say, Blame Brett! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h2kUX_Fmj7k.html

yeah when you have a covid infection, the sars-cov-19 virus attacks and hijacks healthy cells in your body (so hijacks your mitochondria), then your immune system kills the covid infected cells as you recover. so after covid, you will have a lower mitochondrial density than prior to covid and therefore a lower ability to adapt to your training. could definitely be a factor.

Spot on. COVID appears to be underestimated as mild as it was. He was still doing lots of training hours per week at the time. He admits in most of his videos he knows better and doesn’t listen at the best of time and goes so strong in training. it is no surprise that he doesn’t listen to the coach or his body or his mind. … and then did a race that he should not have. A big ego, tempered by amazing humility in the video. Are we all just waiting for him to listen, execute a plan and smash it out of the park?? I am

Having a coach that controls all of your training is silly. They will never truly know how your body is feeling.

Id say train the way that works best for your body. Or talk to this coach and explain that the load is too much. Remember what happened when you trained with Lionel. Its better to be a bit underdone than overtrained and tired.
