My theory is that he was perhaps a preacher when he was a human. He wears a religious outfit during his song and also preaches to his audience. One of his eyes is also different than the other, referencing the evil eye which is mentioned several times in the bible

@@hsiaoaod personally i think it could be due to our ancestors seeing people starve to death. Starvation can cause a person to go pale their emaciated bodies look almost elongated plus starvation makes people desperate making cannibalism easier.

Few people realize just how terribly terrifying the Wendigo are, they're smart and deceptive, one time a Wendigo disguised itself as a wounded child and revealed itself to be a Wendigo and caused people to turn cannibalistic. It's said that the chieftain found a mother pulling chunks of meat out of her babies face and a father desecrating the newly fresh corpse of their own daughter, eating her until there was nothing, genitals first. They're fucking terrifying and I think people need to know more about them, they're devilish spirits of mans desperation and will lie to get what they desperately want or need.

He's a deer in a situation where he's be pushed into being everything deers aren't normally, he's gone off the typical path and onto a new one and that terrifies people. No one can predict what a deer that only feeds off others will do. So I think people miss all this by tracking him onto misunderstood native american folktail that is misconstrued to be about deer when they never have been.

Came from a non-indigenous piece of literature. and was then popularized by Steven King in his book titled “Pet Semetary”. The wendigo was and I quote from Basil H. Johnston “gaunt to the point of emaciation, its desiccated skin pulled tightly over its bones. With its bones pushing out against its skin, its complexion the ash-gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave. It just deepens characters sm Though I'm thinking of minor af characters Ms. Mayberry from Helluva Boss makes vaguely snake-like (?) sounds when annoyed, but more than that what gets me every time is that Katie Killjoy made cicada sounds frequently during her segment with Charlie -- and then oH she's pissed and the extra insect legs come out I couldn't place the sounds Vaggie made in the Pilot. There seemed to be something but I think they could've been sfx (I always appreciate her bow turning into horns though)

Thank you for pointing this out! 😁 While I think the modern interpretation is fun it’s unfortunate that it often gets mistaken as the original. The actual lore of this creature is super interesting and I wish more people knew about it. I found the Until Dawn version to be pretty good. Though it’s not like I’m an expert on this topic. It was good from my perspective but it totally could have still gotten stuff wrong.

It’s why when weirdos go to reserves to speak with natives about them, natives don’t want to tell anyone about them. You’re inviting danger via speaking of them.

I've heard people say that you can't say the creature's native name, but you can call them their english name. I live near the Appalachian Mountains so we've got all kinds of stories and such to share, but I'd stick with not saying EITHER name to be on the safe side. I don't mess with the supernatural 😅

I was about to say in regards to the deer connection. The first instance of a deer like wendigo was from an early 2000s horror movie where the creator openly admitted to doing exactly zero research. Classic wendigo just looked like gaunt humans

Some sources mention them taking parts from animals and adding them onto themselves as a makeshift disguise, but many of them seem dubious.

Yes, I personally don’t think Viv would associate Alastor with a wendigo, as the inclusion of them in popular media is something that has to be done with a lot of caution, and VivziePop has also decided against connections to real-life events for similar reasons. In general, I don’t feel all that comfortable with how popular wendigos are getting in media, especially as a fan of folklore stories myself. Popularity often leads to misrepresentation and misinformation, and there are a lot of other stories and creatures from the same regions that require a lot less caution to represent accurately and respectfully. Indigenous Americans or otherwise.

Really glad you are talking about it cause a Wendigos appearance is more like an emaciated corpse with elongated limbs, talons, and lack of any form of hair on their body. I will say though there have been stories of them mimicking noises so making deer noises wouldn’t be ruled out. (And yes we do find it a little disrespectful)
