I'm here with a bit of a controversial video...a list of movie adaptions I like BETTER than the books they were based off of! A. K. A. Book nerd Blasphemy :P
Hi friends!
I hope you won't hate me for this...
I'd love to know how you feel about book to movie adaptations, and if there are any films you also prefer over the book!
Look out for part 2 and 3 coming soon as well...
- Books I like more the movie adaptation (on the theme of the book IS always better)
- Movie adaptations I love just as much as the book (the movie CAN be just as good as the book)
Sending my best wishes,
Carolyn Marie :)

One thing that comes to mind where the movie is better than the book is The Devil Wears Prada. I feel like a LOT more people talk about the movie far more than the book (which is understandable considering it has a 3.78 rating on Goodreads lol)

@hectorrobertocontrerasmiranda
@@luqman7970 Lexi still has a point, the book is kinda meh and almost mean to its characters, plus there are some unnecessarily problematic undercurrents to some of them and the movie wisely cuts those issues

For me it’s Stardust, the movie is incredible and magical! When I read the book it was just missing the magic and emotion that was portrayed in the movie. Neil Gaiman is just a hit or miss author for me I’ve found, but I’ll always love the movie!

I liked the book Atonement by Ian McEwan - but I agree that the movie is even better. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. I especially love the cinematography and the score (the score always makes me cry, I listen to it very often). The green dress Keira Knightley wears is probably the most beautiful dress I have ever seen. I was just so emotionally invested. And I loved the acting of Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy.

Interestingly, I had to watch the movie for my High School History class. I think mostly due to its setting. But we were also discussing the social dynamics during the era. By sheer coincidence my English class at the same time had to read the book and compare the movie adaptation. So I viewed/read Atonement from a few different perspectives. It became one of my favourite school assigned book/movie due to that

When I read Breakfast at Tiffany’s for the first time, I felt disconnected as well. I saw the movie first and I loved it too, but as I kept thinking about the story and the differences (as well as got older), I felt that the books ending was more satisfying in the end. It felt more true to the person built up throughout the narrative.

I think I would have to say...North and South. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love the book by Elizabeth Gaskell. But the mini series from 2004 with Richard Armitage!!! I could watch that every week. It's such pefect casting. The chemistry between Margaret and Mr. Thornton...it was pure fire. The music...so beautiful. I own a lot of BBC adaptations but I think this one and the Jane Eyre Version of 2005 are the best ones. But the book is fantastic as well. I don't know if you have seen it - but you have to!! 😂😂

(Prior to reading the book) When I watched the 2005 movie of Pride & Prejudice I loved the actors but watching I felt like so many important scenes were being left out of the story. That's when I got inspired to actually read the book. THEN, I realized SO MUCH was left out of this movie version compared to the 1995. I know most of the time the movie versions leave a lot out but there was so much dialogue omitted from the 2005. Now I want to read all of Jane Austens books after seeing the movies.

Great video Carolyn - thanks for sharing your thoughts! I haven't read/seen everything that you mentioned but now I am intrigued to check out some of these adaptations :) One movie/show > book example that is popping to mind for me is "Normal People" by Sally Rooney! I recently watched the BBC series and it is so heartfelt and visually stunning. The cast did such a fantastic job bringing the characters to life. I liked the book too, and though I am personally a fan I don't think Sally Rooney's writing style is for everyone, so I appreciate the show for exposing this story to a wider audience who wouldn't otherwise have given it a chance.

Two book vs movie’s came to my mind while listening to your video: The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim and Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. I saw the movies first then out of curiosity read the books as well. Both, the books and the movies, are fantastic! However, IMHO the book should always be given higher recognition, since it was the basis for movie. But, I can not emphasize enough, both can give - and usually do - that something extra, so it’s worth reading the book and watching the movie!

Hi! I just knew The Princess Bride was going to be in there XD. It is my favorite movie of all time, but the book was it for me--Goldman's intros and little notes messed with my mind and actually made me think this was a summarized version of an existing novel (I searched through the internet for hours trying to find the original book!). So I do prefer the book. I haven't seen the movie for Bridget Jones's Diary, but I have no doubt that it's probably better than the book because it was so annoying to read. I understand vaguely the appeal, but I couldn't finish it fast enough. I haven't seen any of the Austen movie adaptations, but now I'm really looking forward to watching them! Can't wait for the next two videos of this series!

Agreed about the Princess Bride, and I can see some of the other choices you made, too, like Emma. One I have to add is "Jurassic Park." Maybe "Contact" too (Carl Sagan's novel). I haven't read the "Jaws" novel but really it's one of the greatest movies ever made and I think it's safe to give that one to Spielberg. Graham Greene wrote both the novel and the screenplay of "The Third Man" and he feels the film was better, without question. Great idea for a video series!

I think one of my iceberg reversals was The Magicians. I liked the books. I liked their dark take on the toll of magic in present day and what adults would do for power once they found magic was real, but the show was just a completely new level of amazing. It is and will probably always be one of my favorite TV shows. They took the premise of the books and went wild. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it was just so imaginative with everything it did. The acting is great and the characters felt so real especially their complicated interpersonal relationships. Definitely recommend it! And I think I need to do a re-watch soon...

Oh man. I loved those books so much. I've reread the trilogy multiple times, which is something I rarely do. The show was a completely different beast, and I don't even know how I would compare the two. But I'll admit to a lot of frustration when I first watched it over story changes that seemed to be driven more by a lack of budget for decent FX. I enjoyed the show more when I was able to force myself to forget the books exist.

I agree almost completely with your choices of film over book. Two movies I adore over the book and would highly recommend watching are The English Patient and Out of Africa. They are visually stunning, and the acting is outstanding. Both bring the story together in a way which enhances it greatly in my opinion. Two which I consider to be equal to the book are A Passage to India and the 1980's miniseries of The Raj Quartet. Again, unbelievably outstanding acting and visually gorgeous. I'm loving this theme and look forward to the next two parts to hear your further opinions.

I started reading Les Mis in grade 10 because I found the box set in my school library and thought it looked so cool. The edition I was reading had 5 volumes (in Vietnamese, btw), but I couldn't pass half of volume 1. It was partly because I stopped reading in general for a while, but also because I was a bit tired of what was going on in the book, even though I really liked Jean Valjean and Bienvenu. The musical movie took me back to the book (even though... I saw it on HBO about 5 times before I actually sat down and watched it). I've read bad reviews about Russell Crowe's Javert but I loved him so much 😂 When I started reading again I started to love these characters more. I think the cast was wonderful. When I first watched this video the only movie and book that I had read, was Atonement. I agreed with you, completely. Now, I have to preface this by saying you inspired me to want to buy the Penguin Clothbound Classics, but to be honest I couldn't afford them, but now they have the Little Clothbound Classics I am collecting them. I bought Breakfast at Tiffanys. I have seen the movie many times and loved it, I am huge fan of Audrey Hepburn and have seen all her movies. I never met her, but I did see her in person at a film preview of Robin and Marian, it was at the Director's Guild in LA and I saw Audrey Hepburn and Sean Connery in the theater and the cocktail party after, (I was underage, so I didn't drink. Audrey and Sean were surrounded by media, so I never got a chance to even get close to them, but they were beautiful.) I was excited to get the book a few months ago and read it for Shorty September. I enjoyed the book very much, but I think the issue with the book is Holly herself, she is smarter and colder than the way Audrey played her. Also, there are some ugly parts of her character that was not in the movie. There was also no love story between Holly and the narrator, (he had no name in the book,) and that was the central focus in the movie. Anyway, I think that is all very off putting if you're a fan of the movie.

yes completely agree with all of these. Atonement in particular keeps popping into my mind recently even though I haven't read or watched it recently. There is something so amazing about the visual aspect of that movie. The lush languid pre-war summer country house scenes and then the gritty grey war bits. Also from memory the ending of the movie was different from the book, not the outcome but how it was presented, it took my breath away in the movie version. A book/movie you haven't mentioned is Forrest Gump, the book is awful don't read it unless it's a $1 bargain book from a bookstore and you just want to satisfy your curiosity. An example of what's in the book but not in the movie: monkeys in space. I'll leave it at that lol.

So, between The Bridges of Madison County and The Devil Wears Prada, we come to the conclusion that Meryl Streep can actually make the movie better than the book. 😆 Just like Tom Hanks, with Forrest Gump and The Green Mile. I agree with you on The Princess Bride and Bridget Jones's Diary. Totally disagree on Les Misérables. 😁

What's fascinating about Emma, the book, is that it translates so well to cinematic (big and small) adaptations -- with each version always possessing elements and quirks which, together, readily illicits endearment. Give Romola Garai's turn another try after binging on Gywneth Paltrow's, Kate Beckinsale's or Alicia Silverstone's take. You'll really appreciate what a genius Austen was in creating her most infuriating, yet loveable brat! 🤗 The Godfather film is a genius adaptation of a terribly written, but entertaining novel (Do skip the Johnny Fontaine storyline). Will you do a series on great adaptions of terrible books?

I definitely agree with you on the Guernsey Literary Peel & Potato Salad adaption. The problem with the book is that it was unfinished because its author died while writing it, so her daughter finished it and you can see it gets kinda messy by the end, things like the romance weren't supposed to happen but the editors felt it would make the book better, so they feel forced, as there's no real foreshadowing for it... The movie makes changes and makes everything more cohesive, Lily James is gorgeous and everything just flows better. Another book whose adaptation I preferred was The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald. It was such a calm and beautiful movie, and I just thought the book's writing wasn't nearly as beautiful as the movie led me to believe it would be? Also, The Chronicles of Narnia, definitely! And, talking about series, I think Netflix's Shadow and Bone is doing a great job adapting what could be just a banal YA book, with the changes it made and its awesome cast. I don't agree with you completely on Les Mis, though. Whilst I agree you could definitely cut half of the book and get the same plotwise, I didn't like the movie adaptation of the musical nearly as much as I did the actual stage musical (I really didn't like the director's choices in cinematography and sound), and I actually think the musical adaptation did cut some necessary development, especially on Marius's character, that could've made everything go a bit smoother. Not that I noticed it when watching the musical for the first time, but I did realise it once I read the book and I now miss them. Looking forward to the next parts of this video! :D

With the 2020 "Emma", it's more than the visuals .... the real clincher is Anya Taylor-Joy and her unnatural charisma serving as the perfect fit for this title character. Every second she's onscreen, you're drawn into the hare-brained schemes and fancy English lunacy. I love her with every fiber. It's a similar thing with "Breakfast at Tiffany's", where Audrey Hepburn brings those extra special ingredients that elevate the story and make it beautiful. With "The Princess Bride", fun fact: it took William Goldman 15 years between publishing the book and getting a film version onto the screen. He knew it would be a film from the beginning and kept fine-tuning the script for his close buddy Carl Reiner to direct, until Carl's son (Rob Reiner) became a director and brought the childlike enthusiasm Carl could no longer provide. Goldman understood film as a medium, so on a script level it really pops. My controversial opinion is on "To Kill a Mockingbird": Harper Lee gave us a book that's very tangential, to the point where at times it feels bloated. Horton Foote was a screenwriter who knew how to boil the fat down to its essence, resulting in a very focused and effective film. Having the perfect casting for every role, i.e. Gregory Peck as Atticus, also helps.

Yes, the author of Suite Française wrote the book during war and it got lost since she was killed in the Holocaust. It was rediscovered by her daughter if I remember correctly. I actually liked the book even more than the movie, when I finally read it since it shows way more (pretty different) people and how they handle the occupation. It really captures French society back then

You nailed the examples of the movie being better than the book in most cases. As an ardent fan of the Guernsey Literary Society, I have to disagree with its inclusion on this list. What made the book fascinating were the letters, the friendship between Juliet & Sophie (entirely missing in the movie: I loved reading about their life in London, working at a bookstore and the Blitz days). Juliet was also sharper and sassier and more self-deprecatory in her letters than I imagine she would be in person. I didn't find that in Lily James's portrayal. The movie skips many of the literary references and bookclub moments that enriched the book. Not a fault of the movie -it is difficult to translate the epistolary form to the screen without sacrificing something very special. Which is why the movie is good but never lives up to the book. I wish it was made into a miniseries to do full justice to the book

In no particular order: Jaws, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jurassic Park, The Godfather, Forrest Gump, Misery for movies. I could probably think of more given time. Whethter the 1981 BBC mini-series of Brideshead Revisited is better than the novel I'm not quite sure. Call that one a toss-up.
@jamesduggan7200
@jamesduggan7200 Год назад
Well, Space Odyssey was a book written after the movie's success. As for Clockwork Orange, likely the Pt 2: About Equal is more reasonable, as Burgess' novel is a masterpiece too IMHO. Probably I disagree about Misery and Jurassic Park, tho perhaps less vehemently. As for Gump, I'm not at all familiar with the novel, but when one of the two is a tour de force it is difficult for the other medium to produce an equally powerful counterpart.
@thelasthandbook6704
@thelasthandbook6704 Год назад
@@jamesduggan7200 The novelization was written concurrently to the movie, though it was released after. FWIW, the movie itself is based, albeit loosely, on an earlier short story by Arthur C.Clarke. Hard to say, I think it is the sort of thing reasonable people can disagree about. 🤷‍♂ IIRC Anthony Burgess' biggest gripe about the movie was that it was based on the American edition of the book that omitted the last chapter (finally included in American editions sometime in the late 1980s) that his American editor in the 1960s considered "too Pelagian." Hate to say it, I'm inclined to agree with the American editor.
@jamesduggan7200
@jamesduggan7200 Год назад
@@thelasthandbook6704 In terms of the movie only, Clockwork is a bit over-rated, as it moves the audience primarily with sex and violence. Plus the incredible scoring of the film - I still listen to their versions of the Ninth. Besides Alex there is no character development, and the settings tend to be a bit inconsistent. For example, at times the housing project where he lives seems quite nice, almost chic, at other times is presented as a slum. Similarly for the abandoned theatre, which suggests depression and dilapidation inconsistent with say the Milk Bar where he and his droogs drink. However, it is much easier than the novel, which can be so frustrating in the first few chapters, with its strange lexicon.
