Given the heavy artificialization of music in the mixing and mastering stages, there is a very good reason why my music collection ends rather abruptly in 1997.

@@TheJoyofVinylRecords AutoTune, Quantization, Compression and Limiting are now done as a matter of course. Life was much better before any of that came along. It is considerably less on Vinyl than in digital storage, so you're lucky on that count. Thing is I seem to spot it right away and find it totally cringeworthy.

@@Douglas_Blake_579 Rick Beato makes a very nuanced, detailed argument on his channel about why rock has been dead since the early 2010s. For the reasons you've stated PLUS how new commercial rock/pop music is aired and made solely for gigantic automated radio station conglomerates.
@Douglas_Blake_579
@Douglas_Blake_579 7 месяцев назад
@@TheReal1953 I don't care if rock is dead... It had a pretty good run. I would be happy for some fresh music -- real music -- to come along and replace it. It would at least give me something new and interesting to explore. Like most other things, music stopped being about art and entertainment a long time ago. Now it's all and only about money. I've listened to some of the "song soup" these guys are dishing up and quite frankly *it is not music* it is a constant similar sounding noise. Aside from my own personal revulsion, I feel sorry for the people now growing up without hearing real music. Even live performances are AutoTuned now. Many are just spectacle acted out over pre-recorded tracks. Be it Jazz, Rock, Classical, or even Disco... these people have no idea what they are missing. If you watch the reaction videos -- where they play an old song they've not heard before, and then say what they think -- most often you get a mind blown kid who had no idea how good it could be. One guy even commented "He's not even using distortion" over a live version of "Sultans of Swing". Maybe rock and R&B are dead... The problem is their replacements completely suck.

Love Samatha Fish, don’t have anything by her, but I should. I have also seen her in concert, when she opened for Buddy Guy. I don’t know the other too bands but I will check them out. My wife is a big Tom Petty fan, about the only thing we don’t have on vinyl, is Southern Accents, but we are looking. She was so happy when they finally repress Mojo, as that is one of her favorites. Now if we could only find the first Mudcrutch album.

Love Samantha Fish. Her best alum (in my opinion) is Black Wind Howlin' Speaking of the blues, I highly recommend you check out Larkin Poe (sisters Megan and Rebecca Lovell - who are descendants of Edgar Allan Poe). Super talented blues/roots/Americana/rock artists, Rebecca plays lead guitar (and mandolin) and has a powerhouse soulful lead vocal and sister Megan is an accomplished and renowned slide guitarist and provides beautiful harmony vocals. Dubbed by Derek Trucks as "the little sisters of the Allman Brothers," Larkin Poe's newest album "Blood Harmony" is nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category. Saw them last February in Austin Texas and they rocked the place down.

I do know of Larkin Poe, but am not very familiar with them. So now I will fix that. I had no idea the "Poe" in their name was related to Edgar Allen Poe. Very cool bit of trivia. I don't have hardly any Tom Petty, but I picked up that stellar sounding Wildflowers & All The Rest 3LP set back in 2020, and then Angel Dream in 2021 (part of the June RSD 'drop' that year). Last May 2023. I saw Frank Turner, with Chuck Ragan opening (long familiar with both of them) and The Interrupters were on the same bill...and I eventually discovered there were the HEADLINER. Their brand of anthemic punk wasn't quite my thing, but they do put on a very energetic performance and clearly were beloved by members of the crowd. I believe it was sold out. Coincidentally, I literally just added a Near Mint version of Hound Dog Taylor And The HouseRockers - Genuine Houserocking Music record to my Discogs 5 days ago. Last year I inherited several boxes of old records and a lot of jazz...but unfortunately a lot of it was trashed (no sleeves / lots of scratches), however this Hound Dog Taylor record was stellar and I just discovered it this past week; I had it cranked just the other day! Addendum from WIKI: Taylor had a condition known as polydactylism, which resulted in him having six fingers on both hands. As is usual with the condition, the extra digits were rudimentary nubbins and could not be moved. One night, while drunk, he cut off the extra digit on his right hand using a straight razor. I liked the static-180g joke.-- I mentioned Bedless Bones (poppy cold wave/EBM) from Estonia before. Glaring/None out of Berlin (synthy atmospheric coldwave, towards lofi). Mission to the Sun (Detroit, I believe) with weird broody sounds; I described their latest one as "eery stories that should never have been told"; on LA's Felte Records. Bestial Mouths out of Ventura/Sacramento: Sonic Youth on acid, super intense. Chasms out of LA with quiet cold wave. Snow Ghosts out of UK with folksy synth dark wave. Suir from Düsseldorf (I think, Germany for sure) with rocky dark wave. Social station out of Washington DC with old-fashioned new wave. Creux Lies from Sacramento, a Depeche Mode rebirth. Semiotics Department of Heteronyms from Spain with avantgarde synth pop, quite cerebral, but some also danceable. Also Rue Oberkampf, iamnoone, Swesor Bhrater, Lucy Krueger & the Lost Boys, NNHMN, Zanias, Pleasure Leftists, Karl Kave, Public Memory, Whispering Sons, Sounds Like Winter, Kill Shelter +++. I really like to discover and listen to new music. -- No blues here, I'm afraid. On the punky side: Dividing Lines, Arctic Flowers, Bikini Death Race, Lié, Esses, Cable Ties, Ötzi, Yama Uba.

If you look up on the net, what are a band's greatest album, there is often either a consensus, or it is between an album or two. Not with Tom Petty. Some say it's Damn The Torpedoes, some say it's Wildflowers, some say it's Full Moon Fever, or one of his much later albums. That thin wailing voice of his, was always a good test of how clean your stereo was on vocals. His voice was really a bit irritating to listen to at times, along with the group Boston's lead singer when their voices would hit the higher registers. As your system got cleaner sounding over time, the stinginess of their voices in those registers became less piercing. What's worse is my familiarity with Tom Petty's recordings began with the old MCA Masterphile Audiophile lps. Which were even more bright in that particular frequency range where his voice could cause ear wince. But his music was good. As was much Southern Rock from that era. Who can remember some of the more obscure groups like The Rossington Collins Band and The Henry Paul Band? One song that they don't play anymore that I thought was a true classic back then, was Grey Ghost by The Henry Paul Band, along with Green Grass & High Tides by The Outlaws. Of course I liked Skynard and the more in the limelight groups too. I probably had more Poco albums than any other group back then, as they were in the cutout bins often, and at that age, low price was very much a big draw. Lately I've been listening to a lot of piano music like Joe Sample. He was the piano/keyboard guy from The Crusaders before going solo. The Crusaders were one of the best Jazz groups ever, with a discogtaphy that stretches a mile long. They were formerly called The Jazz Crusaders. Hard to think of a group who put out that many albums, without ever putting out a bad album. Free As The Wind is one of their favorite albums along with Unsung Heroes. They WERE Unsung Heroes. Joe Sample is the only Jazz artist that I can think of who has no less than 3 cds, that are "best of" compilations. On one of them called Sample This, there are a few vocal tracks; one with Johnny Mathis singing. Nice. Johnny is still going strong and performing, last I heard. He must be around 90 years old. Anyway, Joe Sample's recordings are always very class recordings with super high fidelity, and along with his great playing and creative melodies, his music is a real attraction to play on my stereo, which has the most realistic sound on piano that I've ever heard; vocals too. You can really believe tha a grand piano is actually in the room. The piano, with it's very wide frequency range as an instrument, is a great barometer of how flat your frequency response is. One peak anywhere in the midrange, and the piano doesn't come off sounding believable, and will sound artificial. Lately I've also been listening to various interpretations of the music of who many consider the greatest American composer of all time; Aaron Copland. Especially his compositions Appalachian Spring and Rodeo. His piano concerto is really good too. Also been getting into the music of one of the great pioneers of Jazz/Rock Fusion; guitarist Larry Coryell. Both his solo stuff and his groundbreaking album Introducing Larry Coryell And The Eleventh House. This guy rivaled Hendrix for one of the best guitarists of all time. He actually sounds like Hendrix at times, but only occasionally. He had a much wider pallette that was more melody oriented, and he often even played acoustic guitar like on the song called Spaces, to name just one. His album Spaces was the only album by a Jazz/Fusion guitarist that made The Absolute Sound Sounds Super Disc List, when it was regularly published years ago.

I loved Rossington Collins Band. I remember when "Don't Misunderstand Me" came out. Great song. I just looked up Larry Coryell. Yep - I can really get behind that. So good.
@sidesup8286
@sidesup8286 7 месяцев назад
Coryell is great. I first got a sampling of him from an audiophile lp, wbich he did in conjunction with another artist on a Direct Disk Labs lp from the 1970s or 80s. I recently got a double cd set of Larry Coryell The Vanguard years, which was in a big lot of Jazz cds I recently purchased. I got the lot for what averaged out to be 7 cents per cd. It's a real buyers market for cds now. I don't think it will last. I see a renaissance coming on those too in the future. The Vanguard label had a reputation for very good sound quality among classical music audiophiles. Sort of under the radar while RCA Living Stereo, Mercury Living Presence, and London/Decca lps got the limelight. What Jazz Fusion is, is a fusion of rock and jazz. I don't know why they didn't call it Rock Fusion; as Jazz needed more recognition and was more popular than Jazz. Maybe the genre would have become huge, just by simply having chose another name for it. Jazz Fusion implies that it's predominantly Jazz. As us Fusion fans know, a great bit of it has its roots more in rock; the other way around. A lot of it sounds more like rock; but with tone colors and musical exploration without chains, beyond rock using many different instruments like sophisticated keyboard contributions and horns. Some Jazz Fusion has no horns at all. Hard to think of many which don't use keyboards as a main instrument. In the late 1960s and 1970s we were hearing sounds and textures we had never heard before, from groups like Weather Report, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Soft Machine and Return To Forever etc. Even Frank Zappa got into it, and his Hot Rats album is on many a list of notable Jazz Fusion albums. Surprisingly I've never heard that one. Some of the most amazing virtuostic electric guitar players came out of the movement like Coryell, Al Dimeola, John Mcloughlin, Alan Holdsworth and Stanley Clarke.

Being born in 1974 and not really getting into music until the early 80s I have far too much interest in all of the great music of the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s that I missed to worry about the modern impersonators. Granted there are some amazing “modern” artists to be sure and maybe 20 years from I’ll give them a spin…

Great line Adam - "modern impersonators". I can think of a few who fall into that category.

Ahhhhh.....Columbia House.....the scourge of college record buying. Wherein they sent out Benny The Fish to break your legs if you defaulted on their idiotic terms.

Hey Rick, I'll definitely give Samantha Fish a try. I like trying new music. I'm just shy of 70 myself and like to keep an open mind about what I listen to. Being retired and tired of tv programming my afternoons are filled with music. Have you tasted Alice in Chains yet. LOL

Definitely enjoy Alice in Chains, but oddly enough I don't own anything by them. 😱
