I bought a trio of honey gouramis for my 20g, but two of them started picking on the "third wheel" so I moved her into a 6g and she's so much happier. Very cute and curious fish. She shares it with cherry shrimp and ramshorn snails. Her name is Sunny.😊

That's really interesting to read. I'm currently starting up a new aquarium at home, it's about 8 gallon and I plan to have shrimps in it. I've always loved gouramis, but have always been thinking about them as fish that wants to be in a group and that my aquarium would be to small for that. In my aquarium I also have a lot(!) of plants and a big root where the fish and shrimps will be able to hide, so it should be a fun aquarium, just a bit small, but at the moment I can't have anything bigger.

I have a Pea Puffer in a 5 g in my kitchen. His name is Waldo because when I got him, he was so small that he was hard to find hiding in his plants. So we always asked , "Where is Waldo?" (based on the children's book of course.) Waldo loves small snails and frozen brine shrimp. He is not shy any more and always comes to the front of the glass to say hi. We all love this little cutie with his big personality.

Sparkling gourami are just the best. They are the fish that got me back into the hobby as an adult and I have been enjoying them ever since. From my experience as long as your tank has a ton of plants and hiding spots they won't hide on you. In fact, my sparkling gourami greet me every time I go near their tank! So much personality in such a cute and tiny frame. Love them.

My next nano tank is going to be a sparkling gourami alongside a school of CPDs! I love that they share somewhat similar color patterns (red along the fins and the spots on the gourami’s fins almost mimic the spots on a CPD). I love the idea of the sparkling gourami as the slightly larger centerpiece - it’s like it’s the King of its CPD counterparts!😁

I have kept all of these except for the honey gourami. The scarlet Badis are my favourite, due to their behaviour and striking colours, they want a lot of space for a tiny fish, if you're wanting to keep multiples, I get this video isn't about that, but hey, information is power. As for the little peas, I kept a group of six for about a year in a 20 gallon and they did just great. they had a baby guppy that got in on a plant, but that evaded my capture and theirs for the whole time they were together. The guppy used to steal the food right out of the puffers mouths and swim freely with them. i don't condone doing this as it may end in a bloodbath. I would just like to point out though, that just because something has worked for others, does not mean that it will work for you. I have found that fish, whilst most don't acknowledge them as sentient beings, I do believe they have memories and individual character traits.

Sparklers are some of my favorites mentioned. Cannot recommend a better "lurker" in a single-kept, planted tank. Always going to be poking around out from underneath or behind something, or acting like they are. Bettas might be "the cool kids", but sparklers are the "goth kids". It's like they're always up to no good. Cool video!

Honey gourami were the first fish I got last year when I set up my first tank and they're one of my favorites. I had a reverse trio in a 20 tall with some albino cories, they did really well and even bred a few times before the female died suddenly earlier this year. Been thinking about adding some more to the tank so it doesn't seem so empty. And scarlet badis has been on my Someday list from the start. I'd consider adding one to my 6gal bookshelf tank with my neon blue rasboras if I didn't already have shrimp in there.

They are so cute and have a great personality. I will put their food between my fingers and put it down in the tank and they will come eat out of my hand. Its sooo cool. I can pet them to. It took a few weeks for them to realize that my hand equaled food, but once they did, they quit zooming away. And then in no time they were coming up to my hand. They do like to hide when they're sleeping, but when awake they are out and about and they will zip to the top and zip back down. They're fun to watch.

@@realangiechrist I have mine with 5 long finned danios. 1 gold and 4 blue. And then I have 2 very old male guppies and 4 Corydoras. I have a 20 gallon long so there's plenty of room. The frogs are not bothering anything. Sometimes they will snuggle up with one of the Corydoras at naptime and sleep away. Of course they are under a leaf of a crypt thinking you can't see them, but you can. 🤫 Shhhh don't tell them. LOL

Would an HG and some green neons be crowded in a 10g? Would a sparkling be better with neons ?

Wow! Honey gourami would sure be pretty with green neons! A sparkling gourami would be fun too. In a 10, I’d do maybe just 6 green neons. ☺️

I put 6 sparkling gouramis in a heavily planted tank but I don't know if they are all still alive because they hide so much that I've only managed to see 2 at the most at a time. 😢

I have no idea why paradise fish aren’t more popular than bettas. They literally don’t need heat!

Have only kept honey gourami my group was aggressive (didn't matter where i tried them in the fishroom) ended up rehoming them only gourami species I've disliked so far.

I would like to keep pea puffers, but I want a heavily planted tank, and I’m afraid that the brackish water would not suit most aquatic plants.

We’ve only kept pea puffers (adorable and so entertaining!) in freshwater and they’ve done great along with all of our plants.

I don't think Cecil is a good name for a fish, I think it's a good name for a seagull... "Cecil the Seagull"

If you move up to a 20-gallon you could try a single Paradise Fish.

If you really want to lean into the fake-marine idea, how about some freshwater shrimp and snails pretending to be salt? Put in some fake corals, and voila! not-actually marine tank here we come. That's actually a highly entertaining idea. I'm not sure I'd put dwarf shrimp in with the honey gourami though. Gouramis tend to pick at shrimp even if they're too big to eat. One gourami and lots of shrimp with lots of hiding places might work though.

I don’t like the idea of solitary confinement for a fish. It’s not natural and inhumane. I keep peaceful little fish with my Betta’s. Ember tetra’s, Pearl Danios, Neon Tetra’s, Mystery Snails. I also don’t believe in tiny bowls for a Betta. 5 gallon or bigger is best with heat and filtration. Think of how you’d feel in solitary confinement with no interaction with others. 😢

Honeys are the worst, boring, no personality, dull look/coloration but to each they’re own I guess.

I just got a trio of sparkling gourami for a cube tank that has an orphan dwarf anchor cat and cherry shrimp. They can and will hunt in packs! They're going after the berried female shrimp.🥲

@@thesmallscape no, as I had no idea they were so predatory! I was worried more about bullying among themselves! I haven't seen any of the shrimp fry or adults in the tank. I had at least a dozen visible fry and 6 adults. They're either hiding really well, or... But I have a tank cycling right now for blue dream shrimp. I guess I'll move them there and get a new tank for my now on hold shrimp order...😅
