For me, I’ve learned to take my time with all the different Derwent colored pencils. I gave away my full set of Procolor pencils only to repurchase them a few years later. And now I really enjoy them because I’ve learned to use them better. The Coloursoft are my hidden gems that I purchased open stock from an art shop where we vacation several times a year. Somehow that makes them a little more special. I’m anxious to try them in Maria’s books. TY

I gave the Colorsoft away. COULD NOT stand them. I gave them to my Boyfriend's Mom. BUT, I did learn that if you don't like them now, keep them and try them on different paper. LOL!! It's SO much fun to rediscover and fall in love with them!

I purchased the 60 set of polychromos and absolutely hated them. Now 5 years later I pulled them out when I kept seeing tutorials with them in worlds of wonder and started using them again and now I love them and am getting the big wooden box with the full set in a few months.

I think that Prismacolours are actually very different to any other coloured pencils. They are almost a different medium. The Polychromos, Derwent Artist, Derwent Lightfast and these Coloursoft have to be used in the way I was taught at college years ago. Very traditional methods. It took me a long time to adjust to the way that Prisma colourists blended colours and, although I like using them, it feels very strange. I’m pleased that you and other people are now using the other brands of pencils and demonstrating these techniques. Thanks for your very informative channel.

I completely agree that Prismacolors are in a league of their own not like any other! I will definitely be using the Coloursoft in more videos to come. Have a great day.

I don’t think that Prismas are better or worse, just not really typical coloured pencils. In fact I’ve always compared them to being more similar to oil pastels. They are different. It always saddened me to see and hear colourists criticise artist quality pencil brands for being exactly that, coloured pencils. There has been a lot of misunderstanding and I’m pleased that you and others are educating people about this.

I fell in love with these when I got them for Christmas. I tried using them like Prisma’s at first, but it didn’t take long until I decided to use them like a layering pencil to blend. After that I was really impressed. I use my Dahle 133 and I’ve had no breaking issues like I’d heard from many others. I’m glad you love them not, because they are great pencils.

I purchased a 12 set of all of Derwent colouring pencils to test drive. I love the Artists, the Procolours and the Coloursoft pencils. My 12 of the Chromaflow had a couple of breakages from the beginning so they are on the back burner.

Coloursoft pencils were my first pencils after the Crayola. I adored them immediately and they worked well with Crayola. I've since added other pencils to my stack. I actually enjoy Coloursoft more than Prisma, which is heresy, I know, but we're each unique in what we want. When I color to just relax, the Coloursoft are what I reach for because they perform consistently every time, have a broad enough range of colors, that blend beautifully, without being overwhelming, and work in the books I have . I also find the larger barrel and broader tip really useful for certain coloring times / images. They work really well in sketch books too, especially in ones with a bit of tooth. We have so many options in pencils and it's lovely to hear how different colorist use and enjoy them, even if they didn't have the same result for me. All of us have different hands, pressure, lighting and books - there really can't be a one-for-all pencil brand IMHO. I'm glad you gave them a second chance and found Joy in them.

I have a set of these pencils, too. I find myself not using them because I'm not a fan of them. Maybe it's because of the way I was using them. Thank you so much for making this video and explaining it. I'll take them out and try them again ❤

I felt the same way a couple years ago which is the main reason I wanted to make this video. I think we all change our coloring style over time, the pencils we like, and even the coloring pages we prefer to color. Hopefully you will take them out and try them again. If you find the right paper, it makes all the difference in the world no matter what pencil you're coloring with. Happy Coloring!

Enjoyed this. Thank you for showing what pencils work well on the different papers as well as different pencils requiring different technique. It’s funny how some higher priced pencils don’t work well on certain papers but some other budget priced pencils perform brilliantly on that very same paper .

I bought the Coloursoft a few years ago and then I bought the Procolour and put them together in the same pencils case, the Procolour are a little harder pencil but they also have plenty of pigment and great colours, I use them singularly and together. You can buy them individually, wondering if you would get a few Procolour and see what you think?

I have the Color Soft pencils as well. They aren’t my favorite even though they are on the soft side. I was disappointed, not in the performance, but in the lack of color choices. Derwent’s choice of colors for these pencils is disappointing. I got so accustomed to the brightness of the colors of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. I still have them and occasionally use them but I have a collection of most of the Derwent line of pencils. Some I like better than others but now I can mix and match colors in all the sets as needed.

Very interesting video. I perfectly agree that each set of pencils is different, and we just need how to use them. A couple of yeras ago, my partner gifted me a set of Derwent Artists, which are not considered good pencils, especially among colorists. However, I learnt how to use them and, even if I am still a beginner, can enjoy my colouring with them. Reguarding the use of black for shading, I read that some artists use indigo instead, because they consider black a "flat" colour. Some others use indigo for shading cool colours, and a warm brown for warm colours. In every set of professional pencils, we can find raw umber and burnt umber, two colours used by some old masters for shadows (umber means shadows or shade originally, a word that comes fron Latin).
@michela5411
@michela5411 Год назад
Just a little correction: the blue used for shadows is mostly ultramarine blue, not indigo. Another way to create shadows is to use complementary colours + blue. This is the way they teach at art schools, but artists love to use their own techniques, because is all about creativity!

That is so pretty!! 💖 Thank you sharing your growth story! 🤗 I wonder what other paper they would work well on and which ones they don't? Remember that windows do sometimes get dirty, lol!! 😂 With the modern tree house fad, I could see a young family living there or one of the mouse families!!🥰

Here’s my tip… integrate them with the Derwent Pro-colour set. The palettes are complimentary and very few duplicates in the sets. I use them in books that you want a nature/landscape/botanical colour palette.

I am very new at coloring. I am actually so confused about which pencils are the best to shadow. You are speaking to an advanced customer. You go into too much detail and continue to speaking in detail. I have watched your tutorials, and I like them. However, it would be better to slow down and just be showing us so basic

@Pamela's Passion for Pencils Thank you. I had an accident in August 2022. I fell and hit my head. I had brain bleeds. Had two brain surgeries. I am recovering. I started coloring in coloring books. Today, I saw my therapist and showed him my coloring book and the pictures I have done. He was really excited and told me to color every day. I love your art and want to have my pictures look beautiful like yours. By the way, I will be 76 years old June 30th.
