Guys an embarrassing mistake, I said the stretched out aspect ratio would be 1.66:1 with these lenses on this sensor, that is not true. It's actually 2.66:1, not sure how I made that blunder! Must need some more PHOOOOOOCUS... Here's the math....The stretch of these lenses are 1.5x , then you have the sensor size (same aspect ratio for full frame or super 35) which = 16x9. We times the 1.5 stretch factor to just the horizontal pixels, ( 16 x 1.5 = 24.) So now the new sensor size when de-squeezed, is 24 x 9. Which, when you divide by itself is = 2.66 horizontal pixels for each vertical pixel. Hence, 2.66:1 Thank you to those who pointed out this gaffe!.........Also, I have the free presets downloadable here along with some test footage if you want to mess around with it. makeartnow.sellfy.store/p/laowa-nanomorph-15x-desqueeze-presets-premier-pro-davinci-resolve/
hahaha Damn! I doesn't matter. Either way you gave the best Phoocus to all the info, for all of us fukes. This are not a reviews, are Joshreviews. Is going to be nice to see you new Bunker. Thanks for the inspiration 🙌💪
Thank you to have the presets free, rarely happens nowadays, most just capitalize on any luts etc. Also waiting for the new sirui line up, bc I just bough FX6, so FF/FE lenses would be better, so will have to see these compared (price including) which set to buy. And because planning to get the ronin 4D some day too.
Sirui is killing it lately. I just saw their new 35MM gen 2 the smallest anamorphic in the world. Can’t get my hands on it. And incase anyone haven’t seen it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ca_Yg6TKI3E.html
Welcome back Josh. The world and RU-vid are better when you are part of it. Was hopeful you had just been busy and everything else was going well. Great, great to see you again. Be well man.
Daaaamn, so many questions... Like i see your concrete walls and cant imagine how you solved the audio because i literally rejected a studio cause it had so much reverb/hall and those diy tube lamps are fire. Welcome back man!
I was just thinking about you this morning... remembering that wedding video you completely saved (a video I need to watch again). Glad to see you again!
Awesome, to see you back hope all is going well after the move.. My son Joseph has been on me about getting a few anamorphic lens and I know as soon as he see this I will hear it from him.. Thanks and going to check into these.
I have an LG ultra-wide monitor and that has a 1.33x stretch, so 1.33x anamorphic lenses aren't that bad of a choice. What I want to know is can you get the 27mm and zoom in with the FX30 and it's not as sharp? That is a 2.5x crop total, so 27mm turns into 67.5mm, which can cover a lot. Sounds like the Blazar Remus is the best choice for that Hollywood look, even with the optical flaws. I did notice that the optical flaws made it look more colorful Hollywood style and drew in my eyes into the center. It's like buy the Sirui Night Walker vs 7Artisans Vision cine lenses, each has a loot to them.
they seem pretty nice, im not sure about the flares even in the new ones tho, i feel they look kinda artificial with not much character im broke anyways ill keep filming w my helios 44
Yeah I'm backlogged on videos. :( all part of being a dad and moving across country. But that video is almost done! Maybe next week? It's legit. They fly very well!!
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL I get it. I’ve got a 10 and 8 year old that’s re busy with after school activities. My life is being their taxi these days. I’m hoping you throw in a little mount swapping for me to crib notes from as well as I’ll be going from DL to RF from time to time.
Hey, i got 3 sirui 1.33 anamorphic lenses, bought them when i was on the SonyFs5. Now i have the FX6 and looking to get the new Sirui anamorphics that are fullframe. What is your input - should i get these instead? Thanks for your work!
Josh: "The name is Focus, but it's spelled with a PH, so it sounds like Fuhuckus." Gerald: "So it's Phuhuckus?" Josh: "Wha? Yeah, yeh yeh, something like that, yeah... anyway, he's the kid that drank six cans of the stuff."
You know it's expensive when the Chinese version is 1000 USD, and I'm Canadian; today, that means around 1.300 CAD, which is too much for an amateur, even a prosumer with an a7III like me.
THE MAN IS BACK! Looking like a real Ohioan! This makes my day! I'm just across town so if you ever need a creative hand, Ill literally jog on over! 🙏🎥🔥🎉
Anamorphic lenses squeeze the image when you film it. And because of the physics of how light behaves thru the lens and the sensor, when this image is desqueezed in post, (or on a monitor), there are some unique and nuanced characteristics to the footage. In a nut shell, you can get a wider field of view than what the lens says, but still retain some of the telephoto properties of that focal length. Hope this makes sense.
Just watched A Clockwork Orange last night, actually kinda love the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. My wife couldn't handle the ultraviolence and left like a weepy young dovotchka.
Hey! The image you are ending up with is not 1.66:1 . Its more like 2.39:1 or 2.66:1. Which is in fact what most anamorphics give you. Clockwork was not shot with anamorphics and its frame crop is less wide in comparison to your footage. Its cropped left and right from standard 16:9 HD widescreen tv’s. So you would actually have black bars on either side as opposed to top and bottom like yours.
ZOMG! I was just thinking about you two days ago, I watched your goodby video. (This is David Schloss btw) and realized I didn't have your number to call and check in to see how you're doing. Hit me up, it's good to see you back and creating.
THERE HE IS! Happy to see ya again and great that you're out there creating. These look awesome. Anamorphic has become my go to and a lot of it is thanks to you.
Josh, out of curiosity have you tried shooting in DCI-4K mode instead? Shooting in that mode crops down by 1.1x (or 1.2x or something, basically it goes to 1:1 pixels instead of scanning the full 4.2k width) helping to give a “head start” on the crop you need to do for the lenses. Should help to give more resolution in your finals.
Yeah that was mentioned in the video. I have some sample footage if you want to see what the full sensor read out looks like. It's in the description, the free presets has sample footage you can mess with.
Real good to see you back! These lenses look amazing for the size, weight and price. Love the look with the diopter, and thanks for doing the full frame tests too, very encouraging to see the coverage. And there's EF/PL, great to see we haven't been left out!
Josh, I bought your Sirui 50mm when you sold your gear on GearFocus, have used it a handful of times. It isn't a go to lens but is so much fun for random projects and certain shots. Love these kinds of breakdowns from you - good to see you back!
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL "Chris, Go make some art!" which let's be honest, is about as apropos as you can get haha. It's taped to my locker bay I keep my equipment in (wonder where I got the locker idea?!) 🤣
I was all in on these Laowa lenses until I found out about the pin cushioning issue. Sure you can fix it in post, but who wants to do extra work when other lenses don't have this issue. I hope Laowa fixes this problem. If I had to choose between a lens having a pin cushioning issue or barrel distortion issue I'd pick barrel distortion. With barrel distortion it gives off that subtle fish eye effect which looks much more natural than pin cushioning in my opinion.
The amount of work you need to do In post is the same that you would need to do to de-squeeze. In fact you can save both as one power grade, along with your log transformation, and copy and paste to all the clips. It literally could not be easier and the trade off is the size. Very useful tradeoff for aerials and gimbal rigs.
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL Yeah, but wouldn't trimming off the distorted pin cushioned sides of the video/frame kind of defeat the purpose of using an anamorphic lens which adds data to both sides of the frame? Seems rather counterproductive to me. I did some more research on the phenomenon, and apparently front anamorphic lenses create barrel distortion which is an effect that I like versus using a rear anamorphic lens that produces pin cushioning. The tricky part so far has been finding front anamorphic lenses.
Why don't we all just stick to the SMPTE anamorphic standard of 1:2.35 eh? If it's good enough for Panavision and the vast majority of theatrical release films, then why do we need this plethora of "personal favorites"? just sayin.
There's something a little odd about someone with such obscenely decadent cinematography shots and an insane skill level.... yet the audio is painfully out of sync with the video. (Audio leads by about 50-60ms somehow) Absolutely great video otherwise, though! Loving the look of these lenses. makes me want to get back into precision grinding my own prism lenses to make compact clip-on lenses for smartphones; buddy I used to live with had a 5-axis CNC mill which we, somewhat ironically, used for grinding lenses rather than actually milling them. But hey, it worked well enough for small batches!
I appreciate your input on everything cinematic I just got a Lumix S5 most lens are expensive do you have any recommendations on really cheap lenses I mean really cheap like Max 250. just asking sorry if its a dumb question. when will we see you in Hollywood thanks for the videos
To be frank, all these budget anamorphic lenses are a bit of hype. I just watched another channel review anamorphic lense on a body that can’t shoot open gate so he he had to stretch and crop in to fill his frame…. It’s ridiculous.
Josh, what is that filter holder for the 12mm you’ve got? I’ve been trying to find a solution for a while now and just stumbled upon yours in this video!
This leads me to my toughts that I have had for some time, as Gh5 and Gh5s owner I still don't have a anamorphic lens in my kit, and that's is...well what it is. I have my eyes on the X-1.8> and up but are well aware of the price the follows that experience. I like the hear you toghts of a Cheap, mid and Top class choice for dark or low light capture...
I gotta say I do really like the 27mm PL mount Nanomorph I got. I tried the Fujinon wide angle adapter and it transformed this lens. It wider and closer focusing. Minimum focus of about 7" with adapter!! Fantastic combo. Got it off Indiegogo and the flares aren't so bad. I also added a Schneider Hollywood black magic filter.
@@alzibaba Fujinon RCV-82SC .82x Ratio Converter. It does add pin cushion distortion and vignette. I'm guessing the FOV is about a 35mm FF when you crop out the vignette. To me, it gives it more character and I can get extreme close focus while still be able to hit infinity. (Evil Dead II, Ash looking into camera laughing CU shot) I can get that same look when close to the subject.
All the footage I shot was with full frame. Thats what the presets are for, you can totally shoot full frame with these lenses, just download my free presets. In fact, I like the character you get when you film full frame with these lenses as opposed to s35.
If you can make one for me, i'll include in the kit for everyone and give you credit. You need to change the height of the frame to 66.7%, then use a lens correction of some kind to reduce the pin cushion, then you need to scale. If you're down, hit me up in my DMS and i'll share with you some sample footage to work from.
so.. I kind of feel like the 266:1 is a bit too wide with too much dead space on the top and bottom. what I was trying to figure out is if shooting in Full Frame allows for a 239 crop with more resolution than just punching in.. am I thinking about this wrong?
I missed your content so much. Believe it or not, I actually looked up you channel yesterday to check whether I'd missed a video. Lo and behold, here we are. Thanks for an awesome review.
