In Finland, inmates at Open Prisons go outside to work, study and have therapy horses. They have keys to their rooms and their own kitchens to cook in. Finland believes that by treating criminals as equals, and giving them autonomy, they will rehabilitate and better adjust to life outside of prison.

It's almost like they want to fix the problems, rather than just keep them out of sight. Weird 🤔

Finland is one of the most humanitarian countries in the world, in my humble opinion. They really focus on, not only their own problems, but set an example for the rest of the world as well. These prisons are more about rehabilitation rather than punishment. You have a label as a felon in America, and your entire life is ruined. This sends a hopeless message to people on the outside, in impoverished areas, who really have no real quality of life in the first place. People want to call America a Christian and completely liberated foundation. Its not. In any sense of the word. Most politicians who claim to be Christians or patriotic are bribed by major corporations. And the New Testament says that money is the root of all evil. You do the math. Do you really want to help people? Or do you want to use their mistakes and misguidance to rake-in more tax dollars, so you can keep breaking the law yourself behind closed doors and out of the public eye. And this is coming from a US Veteran. Ty ladies and gents.

There is a lot of good in the US, but a huge amount of potential is being lost because of the pursuit of maximum profits. Certain services (such as prisons) should not be a business but a public service.

Important thing to note; for the heavier crimes, places like this come into picture AFTER the sentence has been served. in all practical essence, this entire thing is a half-way house between the endstages of the sentence and you getting out.

The purpose of the prison is not to isolate people from the world. But I really try to help her get back into society. What's strange about it? People's starting points are very different and people make mistakes in their lives. Is not it better for everyone to give a new chance? Another option is to increase fear, isolation and violence. Police (unnecessary) violence (in USA) is just one piece of this whole. If you are aggressively approaching the capture situation, you will likely get an aggressive response. For this reason, the police also fear and shoot "securing their own security". just in case. This results in overreacting and by-pass victims. Violence has become a thread that is very difficult to break. Turn subtitles on: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RkqPxsUSGTU.html

This is a bit misleading clip. Those sentenced to less than one year's sentence may, at their discretion, be placed directly in an open institution to reconcile the sentence. The conditions for the placement of those who have been sentenced to longer sentences in open institutions will be assessed at some point in the execution of imprisonment. Only those who have been behaving well and who are not dangerous to others, will have a chance to be transferred to open prison at the end of their sentences. Escaping the open prison results every time in placement in a closed prison. For such inmates, it's not possible to be placed in open prison ever again.

Beautiful idea. It's too bad that the American prison system has already created so much savagery within its prison walls. If you weren't a hardened criminal when you arrived, you most likely left there being one. They have intentionally left no room for redemption or rehabilitation. Instead they have created a booming business. Each prisoner with a value equivalent to piece work. The more you get, the more you make.

And maybe the biggest problem is the privatization of prisons in the States. The owners make profit for having many inmates who work for them for basically free. So they are modern day slaves.

In the states, our entire social system is a joke. And our prisons basically are cages and a gas chamber. I look to Finland to design my rehabilitation system when I get to finally build my own town.

This is as shocking for me as the long term incarceration in the US including the lifetime jail terms of which I disagree. Proponents of this soft treatment as in Finland are invariably claiming good results but if the reality in my country is anything to compare then things are not as rosy. Here in Greece sentences are also light. Murderers typically are incarcerated 15 years and they get days off as well. Hundreds of prisoners are released due to crowded prisons etc. Well they claim good results but try telling that to the new victims of the prisoners released early. Therefore I think it is mostly up to the Finns being a society of decent people where this could potentially work. Not in my country or the US which by the way I love like my second home.
@omranhashim1028
@omranhashim1028 5 лет назад
Nickos1b You bring up a good point. Society probably does have a lot to do with it, but it also sounds like Greece has other factors that could be affecting the incarceration rate. Perhaps economy, political instability, or other factors, I don’t really know much about the situation there. But I think what’s more important than the length of the sentence or an open prison is the philosophy of trying to decrease the number of people going to prison and trying to rehabilitate the ones that do to where they don’t return to the crimes that led them to prison.
@infinityentity
@infinityentity 4 года назад
Society can play a part but the biggest difference is rehabilitation, they give the prisoners the help they need to build stable lives so they won't have a reason to reoffend. If you don't show a willingness to improve you'll spend your time without ''soft treatment'' but overall prisoners are not dehumanized because of their crimes.

I admire how Finland deals with their prison inmates far as giving them the freedom to move around outdoors and trusting them to be around the people in the community. But do you think this program would be so successful if there were prisoners of multiple races there? I ask because I don't think it would work here in America because of fear and racial differences.

if my family member was murdered i wouldnt be the one deciding his sentence for that reason. Again if for nothing else this actually works better than your conventional prison in the us for example. I would much rather have a safer country with less people turned into monsters by their enviroment and the prison system with infinetly less chances of your family getting hurt than one based on punishment and revenge.

Revenge only creates more suffering, as a finn I see no point in that. Also I shouldn't have any right to have a say in how the murderer is treated because I wold surely have a bias
