I've witnessed the aftermath of 2 pits shot in a 5th wheel toy hauler by a few A-holes who thought it was going to be a piece of cake stealing the owners Can-Am Maverick. What's even more sad are the RVer who think it's a great idea to mount their security cameras chest level. I was sitting outside with the Mrs... We witnessed parents putting Halloween masks on their kids so they can smear vasoline on the camera lens.. The children ran back to the trailer and the father went back over and stole the RV owners $7,000 electric bikes.

Most family dogs won't attack an intruder it's been proven. Unless you have an aggressive dog which most people don't want the hassle the wrong person getting bit. I keep bear spray and a firearm as last resort. Can't rely on Law Enforcement to get there in time even in the city. I always call LE if something isn't right stay behind a locked door let them deal with it.

On the topic of boondocking is boring. The issue is people hear that boondocking is cheap. So they say great! We will do this next vacation only to discover that there is no one to entertain them. The thought is that when you are on "vacation" you need to do everything and see everything before you go home. The idea that you would go out into the boonies and just relax is foreign to many. I know people who even on weekend trips have to go go go. Because if you wanted to relax you could stay home. Sad but true.

Our very first night in an RV was spent boondocking. We rented an RV and it took us so long to get loaded up and our supplies and hit the road that it was near dark. We had not made a reservation anywhere yet, as we weren't sure how far we could get that first day, and we were unsuccessful finding a spot. I really didn't feel ready to drive the RV at night, so we were getting a bit concerned. As we neared the top of a hill, I noticed RVs and trailers parked in various places on either side of the road. We pulled off, looking for signs or other indications what the place was. Seeing none, we figured that with all the others there, it was probably OK, and if not, someone would come to collect fees or tell us to go away. We leveled the RV and got to cooking dinner, followed by a big casserole for breakfasts. We spent a very nice night there, and felt safe with many neighbors around. It was complete and total dumb luck that we found it, but it was great!!

OMG - We probably eat BETTER when we're boondocking in the middle of nowhere! Preparation is key... we are not full timers, but usually take trips of anywhere from weekend jaunts to weeklong+ trips. We "menu plan" ahead of time, then head to the grocery. I do a combination of "old school" cast-iron Dutch oven (over coals or campfire) and also use a small propane grill. I'll chop veggies/onions etc. before leaving home and bag/refrigerate them. Pan fried Perch, meatloaf, Dutch oven cherry cobbler... endless possibilities!! But then, I LOVE to cook out in the sticks! In case of rain, most meals can still be prepared inside on the propane stove. Note: If we're near a reasonably well flowing creek, we'll filter water for dishwashing (if needed) in our Berkey filter. We usually conserve, and rarely run low... unless we decide to stay extra days. The trick is to JUST GET OUT THERE! Otherwise, you'll never know what you're missing!!

Another way to work that learning curve, practice boondocking at home, or at a campground. Don't hook up to services like electricity and water. See how it goes. It will help you get an idea of what you can do, what you don't want to, and how long the water will last. All while you are right there with the hook ups right at hand.

Before we start our full-time journey we are making a list of what's absolutely needed for boondocking I will be taking some of my DeWalt cordless tools A drill, 1/4" impact, led flashlight, small circular saw several 5ah batteries especially the cordless Chainsaw you never know if a tree will be in your way or one falls blocking your only exit, it adds a little weight to everything. The tools can be charged via solar also the batteries can provide emergency power to start your vehicle (if you know what your doing) something breaks on your camper or vehicle these compact power tools have guts are super durable and light I'm not saying this brand is the best I just keep to one brand so I don't need different batteries and chargers.

All well said & spot on! Nice camp spot you're on as well. We do about 70% of our camping Boondocking & dry camping. Very, very seldom been bored in about 40+ years of camping. Just use a little common sense and be prepared for as many unknown as you can think of and know your limits. I have a small solar system and a small generator for backup. I also carry an extra 10 gal of water + 6 gal of gas in my pickup as a ' just in case'. I'm much more anxious in a RV park.

We just bought thedyrt PRO but have no idea how to actually find roads for dispersed camping. Would be interested if you covered exactly how you get started / find roads.... do you just drive down a highway and turn off on a road? and check with theydryt for color code on the map? How exactly does this work for newbies?
@plz1277
@plz1277 2 года назад
Google earth is key!! You can zoom in to see condition of roads, camp spots etc. I use combo of apps to ensure I’m on BLM/may forest and ref location on google. I look for areas already established. Keep in mind maps may be old so recent rains may impact. ALWAYS have plans b and c. Safe travels all!

Bought it in 2010 (during the market crash) for a great price and will be cashing out big time. I’ll be buying a truck and 5th wheel toy hauler and hitting the road. I’ll take my motorcycle and buy an ATV. Everything will be paid in full too with enough left over to last for years. It’s scary but is definitely going to be an amazing adventure. My main concern is going down a single lane road (32’ Class A with a Honda Fit toad) and having someone with a similar set-up come from the opposite direction. Neither being able to back up. Or, coming to a dead end dirt road, and nowhere to turn around.

Interesting, was watching a video prior to this one, and once it finished this video started. The previous video was on how the couple (twice now) having had their $7,000.00 e-bikes stolen off of their rig! This of course was in a regular campsite, but you truly do have to arm yourself with your own expensive options, just to keep the items you've paid good $$ for, which is truly a shame. They too now have added video cameras (at fairly great expense) to again, try and keep their own purchased items! It may be different while boon docking to some extent, and in some cases in campgrounds, it could be your neighbour campers that are stealing from you! Now that I have recently bought my own e-bikes, I'll be spending even more on the best of locks, and I may need to add video as well unfortunately. Also David on edit - I checked Amazon, and it seems even Amazon has none of the RV Window Dry Lube. Perhaps you might know where your viewers might find it? Thanks!

A lot of urban legends out there, I did get creeped out a couple times on BLM land and had to leave the hair stood up on my neck like something was very wrong! It's always best to follow your gut! It's very unlikely to run across a Cereal Killer (sorry YT made me change that) humans are animals just like every other creature we survived this long for a reason sometimes we sense things we can't explain it's built in to us. Now if you've just left a dispensary in Oregon your senses might not be very helpful (Nothing against it just making a point 👉😀) the best advice is stay aware of your surroundings avoid getting involved in issues that are not your problem (you can unfortunately get caught up in long expensive legal issues even if all you wanted to do was help) I know someone that has a YT channel they saw someone getting robbed and stepped in, a year later they had a felony warrant out for there arrest in that state over 1000 miles from home because the victim mistakenly thought they were the aggressors because she was hurt badly and in the ER for weeks her memory was confused because of her injurys they spent thousands on legal fees to clear their names 😮‍💨 it's a sad state of the world today how you can be the best person in the world and still have your life turned upside down. 😵‍💫😵‍💫

the idea of a weapon like a bat or a knife is great but there is a problem with it. If you don't know how to use it odds are it's going to be used on you. example would be swinging your bat at someone. average guy gets out of the way someone who has been around this type of thing steps towards it. the handle where you hang onto it won't hurt me and now I am inside it's effective range. either I take it from you or start beating on you since your hands are busy holding a bat. same holds true for any weapon. As for firearms or anyvweapon for that matter the best advice i have ever gotten is if you're dumb enough to pull it you had better be smart enough to use it.

I'd skip the ice and get a 12v fridge/freezer of whatever size you can fit. I have a 50 liter one behind my passenger seat in a Prius, and keep it at -20C/-4F. For stuff you want cold but not frozen, just take frozen water bottles out of the freezer and put them in 2 nested cooler bags for your leftovers etc. With bottles going back and forth between being ice and water each day, there's always a nice partially-frozen bottle of water in one place or another. Then you can drink the water off, and pour any drink you want, over the ice remaining in the bottle. Continually buying ice adds up, and you invariably will ruin food in the water it creates. The only water my system creates, is a bit of condensation on the frozen-solid water bottles when put in the cooler bags, but there's not an ongoing supply of humid air into the bags, so it's a very limited amount of water in the cooler bag. Just putting a hand towel in the bag is more than enough to keep it dry.

Definitely would have weapons, preferably a firearm. Nothing fancy, just a nice 40 cal. Glock, and a small derringer to keep in my pocket. Dog and security cameras are a given.

Just remember each state has different laws regarding that fire arm. Know before you go.

@@plz1277 Yep, it's a maze of laws if you're driving though a bunch of states. As for people randomly attacking you out of the blue, I wonder if that's ever happened to George,. Usually there's a reason, or at least weakness inviting it. I'm not physically intimidating, but in my entire adult life, 100% of men considering attacking me, instinctively knew they'd be better off waiting for a target who shows fear. Maybe I'm biased due to having been in plenty of fights as a kid, I learned boxing as a teen from the champion of the NYPD, and I was also a sprinter. So maybe I give off vibes of being physically confident/competent/fearless/whatever. Ironically, many gun owners get into guns due to having more fear (including fear of a fist fight) than the average person. Plus there's a free gun for the bad guy who takes them by surprise or has them outnumbered. If in a bad situation, leave. If they try to stop you, hit them with bear spray and get out of Dodge while their aim is about as good as Hellen Keller's for a while.

Crooks are lazy, otherwise they'd have a job. The chances of them going mile and miles out into the bush are not good, even then they would have to stumble upon you. As for guns I don't think they're a good idea. It's way too easy to get yourself in trouble with a gun, especially a hand gun. If you really feel the need to arm yourself a short, but legal. shotgun is probably the better choice. Personally I've opted for bear spray and a tire billy, perfectly legal, unless you're going to Canada and less chance of you going to jail. I think Walmart parking lots are probably a whole lot more dangerous than National Forest or BLM land.

Bear spray is legal in Canada, $44.00 CDN at any outdoor supply shop. You can't buy it for personal defense but if you are attacked and "happen" to have it on you well there's your loophole. You are right with the firearms part of it it seems that criminals here are allowed to do what they want but if you use a gun to defend yourself then your life becomes a living hell. buying a gun or ammo here requires a PAL after a 2 day course record check references and such that take 4 months max to finish you are approved. My wifes took a year mine took 18 months the renewal has taken 6 months. it's a bloody joke here.

Yes it happens. BUT, it happens from small towns to the largest city. Only you the individual can decide if something makes you too uncomfortable to do.

Agreed, it is unfortunate but people get murdered everywhere. I guarantee you less people get murdered camping than in a city. Also, how often do you hear about someone getting murdered while camping? Once a year?

People are unfortunately murdered everywhere even on city streets in broad daylight.

It's a shame, like any murders. Their situation was not that of an average boondocker/camper. It seems that they were considered Moab residents, were living fulltime in the vehicle, and were boondocking in probably the nearest national forest to Moab, a wildly popular tourist destination considering Arches National Park is right there too. Who knows whether they'd developed a stalker while living in the area, rather than this being a random attack upon boondockers. I didn't seen any reporting on whether they had jobs in town or what their routines were. Then there's the possible hate crime angle, again with the chance that it was a random attack of opportunity by a hater, and the chance that they were noticed frequenting the area and attracted a stalker/hater rather than a stalker/predator. In any case, they noticed a creepy weirdo camping by them, and chose to post about it on social media rather than spend that time beating a hasty retreat. Rookie mistake, which most people make at some point, and most people get away with, but they got unlucky that it was someone who was actually out to kill and dismember them. Terrible.
