Real talk, we *have* to give up the idea of KingdomPhylumClassOrderFamilyGenusSpecies, and just revert to clades. Maybe Genus and Species have some usefulness, but its totally understandable that the complex paper was discussing what the heck those even are. Its sensical for SOME animals, but like... Look up a ring species, and that californian lizard, sometime. Species might not even exist as a concept. And don't get my started on the Eukaryotic Family Tree. It will destroy your idea of a kingdom and a phylum, if you look into it. It's one of my favorite things to learn about, but this is why I am a Cladist. You just can't rank that stuff into 7 neat categories! Evolution didn't progress in chunks!

I learned about diatoms from true crime of all things apparently they can figure out what body of water or even dirt you've been in by what diet tones are found on the body or around the crime scene kind of like using leaves to determine if you were in someone's backyard that has a certain type of tree. Because there are so many different diatoms and they live everywhere but there is usually specific ones found more often in certain places than others

Actually, one of the things you can figure out from diatomes is whether the victim drowned or was killed and then dumped in the water! They're so small that if you breathe water even for a short while, they will find their way into your bloodstream and eventually your bones! So if the body has diatomes in their bones, they drowned.

Molecular clock is a figurative concept used to date things based on the rate at which they mutate, so basically checking their sequence to other lineages to find difference, then doing some math to figure out when those differences occurred to get an approximation of how old that particular mutation is, and therefore how old that lineage is.

So, while I appreciate her offering some solace on these issue, she seemed a bit ambiguous about how tenuous our existence might be, as separate from her saying the world itself will be ok, as well as being unclear on exactly what she meant with big oil wanting us to feel helpless. Does she say this meaning big oil does this so we don't take the needed steps to fix how we live, like finding oil alternatives?

And I just felt compelled to say THANK YOU in particular for the bit at the end of this video about Climate Doom™. But hearing you say all of that really helped me out of a spiral today. I can't remember if I commented this before or not but thank you Octopus Lady, for your message about the climate crisis. Understanding that climate change IS reversible is so empowering. Don't get me wrong it's gonna be a lot of work, but it is doable! I'm currently studying Conservation Biology at Uni and we just had a class discussion about the film 2040, discussing what parts are good and what are some criticisms of the film. During the discussion, your message popped into my mind "The earth has survived way worse than us...when you convince yourself that we've irrevocably damaged our planet you are playing right into the hands of the fossil fuel industry, they want you to be trapped in hopelessness...that means they can keep getting away with what they're doing, DON'T LET THEM. WE CAN STILL FIX THIS." There are definitely technologies out there than can help solve the problems we're facing, people are looking for solutions. Again it's going to be a lot of work but it definitely doable! You've helped switch my mindset from "Climate pessimism" to "Climate Motivation". I don't think I've felt this driven to continue pursuing my career. Thanks for being an inspiration! 🍃🐙

It helps remind me of my university and work days. I was one of those biological sciences majors that specialized in wetlands biology. Diatoms are found almost in all environments on the earth where they can find a source of water and in some cases a viable liquid. And don't for there are 3 metabolic processes and possibly more as they keep finding more about the deep sea vents. I will agree that it us so difficult to remember these metabolic processes and then they throw them on the same test so you can mix them up trying to write them down.

@@BlueRidgeBubble yes and no. Human beings are causing an extremely rapid change. Keyword rapid. Over a natural, untouched cycle, species die out, and others evolve to adapt. When the change is too fast, plants and animals, and human beings cannot keep up. Also, aside from the natural climate change, we have created harmful chemicals such as pfas (forever chemicals released by plastics) and other compounds that destroy and alter dna, and affect fertility. These are not natural and should have never been introduced into the environment. The only way i see the earth returning to its natural state in the next several hundred thousand years, is if humans were to die off, or immediately change their ways.

The climate rant earned you my sub. A realistic outlook on this "crisis" is hard to find, especially among academics like yourself. This is the 3rd movie I've watched of yours. I, too, have been frustrated to the point of near madness in contemplating the siphonophores... When 2 palps merge, does the first one instruct all others with the body part assignment?🤔 These are things we both need to know for some reason. Obsession or compulsive curiosity, I think.😆 I am a fishmonger/fisherman/artist from New Jersey. I also have a channel on these same subjects, some other random stuff as well. Thanks for the education, the laugh, and the reminder that I never found the answers to these nagging questions!😁

I don't know much about fishing but I wonder if we can fish algea as the substitute for other marine animals. From what I read, algea provides all kinds of nutrients that humans need, so I think maybe we should eat algea instead of other animals. The same with mushrooms, as some manufacturing facilities are creating meat from mushrooms.

This video with practical advice is a reassuring piece that is well done. Science expertly laid out for ye old consumer to digest.

Climate doomerism, climate apathy and blind hope exist to stop political action against polluting industries. What matters so stuff gets better is that we organise a better world on the individual, local and collective level. As an individual, you can go on a plant-based diet, change to cycling, insulate your home, use renewables and not fly. Locally, you can create and support community supported agriculture and agricultural cooperatives, ride share, create housing cooperatives according to the Passivhaus standard, and sabotage polluting industries. Collectively, you can join progressive, democratic socialist parties and left-wing labour unions and participate in the global climate movement.

Diatoms are indeed beautiful, and you can find them in any puddle. Dirty, slimy sort of places that have been that way for a while (like a puddle that's turning weird and green after a week or two) are often good places to look. And any ol' microscope can let you see them.

Okay I did a quick comment skim and now several months after the video was published I’ll try to explain a molecular clock. Basically some parts of an organism’s genome are going to be extremely important for the continued function of said organism - stuff that codes for functions relating to basic metabolism, for instance. Because these parts are so important, mutations that occur which change the output are unlikely to be passed on (because the organism won’t survive). Therefor all the changes that accumulate in these regions of the genome are going to be neutral mutations - mutations that don’t actually change the output of that region. Since those mutations are neutral, any one mutation is just as likely as any other to be passed down and become “fixed” in a population (as more individuals in a population branch off of that original mutant parent, and you have mixing with other parents, etc). This process of neutral mutations accumulates at a pretty constant rate which is calibrated against fossil and historical records. So you can compare, say, genes for hemoglobin between horses and humans and see the difference between the two of them and get an idea of how long ago the two species diverged just based on how different these regions of the DNA are.
@scaper8
@scaper8 Год назад
Old video, so I don't know if you'll ever see this, but a molecular clock is basically the idea that a genome aquires mutations at a fairly standard rate. So, you can look at the number of differences in the genomes of two related things and get a rough idea of when the two lines diverged.

Saving this video for future use because it's full of so much info that I'm constantly trying to convince people of. Diatoms are EXTREMELY important, 70%+ of oxygen is provided by phytoplankton, and the world is not screwed! The planet has been through so much worse and shrugged it off after a few million years like it never happened. I feel like paleontology needs to be required in school to teach people the importance of the ocean and how extinction events were caused, and also how life recovered from those events.

Nice! I've been promoting the idea for a few years that we should promote diatome microblooms on the open ocean to drastically increase the rate of carbon repatriation. It wouldnt take much. Say a tow-behind buoy that every so often 'seeded' finely ground silica & some nitrates. If commercial freight carriers would tow them we could create little dense pockets of blooms that wouldn't last long enough to be problematic. Each seeding might create a hundred foot bloom for a day or two. Not sure on specifics, require actual testing to figure all that out and dial it in for optimizing.
