I had a similar experience with another series by Sarah J. Mass, the throne of glass series. I thought the first book was okay, it had some romance, but was mainly about a conspiracy involving magic. As I read more, though, it got way worse. I eventually gave up on the series.

Well, that's controversial. It's impossible to destroy someone's community when people inside that community are actively participating. Moreover, almost every community has it's own "dark side" with weirdos. That doesn't mean, that the good, adequate side disappears. Same with book community. I could say that it was rotten by smut, but, actually, smut's always existed and been popular among middle- age women. Doesn't mean, that they've "destroyed" book community. No, not at all. They've created their own branch, if I can say so, and peacefully exist within it. People who don't enjoy that genre just stay away from it 🤷‍♀️

For a wonderful standalone book by the same author Tress of the Emerald Sea is outstanding! Great start to the author if you’re not interested in committing to an entire series!

Another good start I would argue is the first Mistborn series! I think that Way of Kings can be a little bit of a drag at times for newcomers, but Mistborn is fast paced enough to get the reader hooked onto the world of Brando Sando. I can’t wait for Stormlight 5 this year!
