What trees and plants are safe for your budgies? It can be hard to figure out. And once you know, how do you find the right tree or plant type? In this video, I give a list of some of the plants and trees that are safe. I also give some hints and tips to distinguish between different plant and tree species. I hope this can help you provide the right perches and food for your birds!
This list from Budgie World is a good start: www.budgieworld.org/wiki/safe...
But always compare several sources before you make any descision.
You can use a plant recognition app to determine whether you have the right plant. For instance, LeafSnap: plantidentifier.info/
About the pitch pine, which is not safe, you can find out more about it in this list:
www.thespruce.com/pine-trees-... (number 25 on the list).
I know this video is not about herbs, but this link might be helpful as well:
www.birds-online.de/nahrung/gr...
I also looked at this list of plants:
www.liparrots.org/toxic-plants/
(I'm not sure why garlic is on the 'safe' list. I wouldn't feed my budgies garlic).

In the description you can find links to helpful sources. I also found an app that can help you recognize plants and trees. It's called LeafSnap. So far I really like it and it will help with finding safe perches 😊

I'm not an expert, but I think cockatiels and budgies are quite similar in that sense. They're also from the same region. This website has a list that is for several parrots, including budgies and calopsitte: www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml

Nice video !!! I have a question.. 😅Xtra - vital it's good food for budgies?
@misty_blue
@misty_blue 3 года назад
Thanks! I looked at XtraVital and it seems like pretty good food. It has pretty high reviews, contains many vitamins and even egg. I can't tell for sure, because I've never used it, but others seem pleased with the food. Although, some people say their budgies don't want to eat it and it has fruits, which are higher in sugar. I've seen from several sources that you shouldn't give so many fruits to your budgies. Instead, seeds, pellets, veggies and egg are better. Someone said XtraVital smells like citrus fruits. I read acidic fruits are not so good for budgies. So... perhaps the quality of the ingredients is quite high, but maybe the fruits are not so good. That's my first impression of XtraVital anyway 😋 To give your birds more vitamins, you could also try giving them sweet potato, capsicum (bell peppers), spinach and similar foods. Egg and egg shell are also very good for them.

@misty_blue
@misty_blue 3 года назад
@@equestrian_8499 if it has a lot of fruit, it might be better to take it out (unless your birds don't eat it anyway). My budgies do eat some dried fruit, but only a few crumbs per month, so then it's fine 😋 I saw especially lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit are not so good. But I don't know if you can find out what type of fruit the mix has. If it only has the fruit aroma, unfortunately you can't take it out.

Can I give curry leave to. My budgie is if safe please tell??
@misty_blue
@misty_blue 3 года назад
I found this from Alen Axp: 'Can budgies eat curry leaves? Budgies can freely feed on these leaves. Many have been spotted eating them with no harm experienced. Some budgie owners call them their pets’ delicacies. Do not be scared to try them with yours and see the outcome. If the results are desirable, you are good to go.' alenaxp.com/what-budgies-can-eat-and-what-not/ So it looks safe 😊

Idk if you’ll see this. Thanks for the vid and I know you covered a lot of trees, but what about the Leyland Cypress? Is that safe for budgies. I’ve debarked a branch and sanded it down so it can be used as a perch. But is this wood safe for my budgie?
@misty_blue
@misty_blue 3 года назад
I've been researching about the Leyland Cypress and I couldn't find much about it. This website does say the tree contains toxics: www.hunker.com/13428793/leyland-cypress-toxicity But it looks like it's mainly the sap and leaves that cause problems. Personally I think a perch without bark and that has been sanded, can cause almost no threat. I suspect the budgies will only chew it, but not eat it. If you want to be 100% sure, maybe it shouldn't be used. But personally I doubt it will cause problems. I read several pages and no one wrote about cypresses (only the page I shared said that horses ate leaves and had health problems). So, I think cypresess rarely cause problems. Otherwise people would be reporting on it.

One of my new budgie is tail bobbing Is that normal?????
@misty_blue
@misty_blue 3 года назад
It could be normal. Our budgies sometimes bob their tail when they're sleeping or singing. So it's not always because of pain or discomfort. If your budgie is tail bobbing almost constantly, it could be a sign of illness. You can look for other signs, like diarrhea. If the poop is runny, black or looks strange in some other way, it could be another sign of illness. You can also analyze your budgie's behavior, whether it is active and relaxed, for instance. A swollen vent could be another sign for some health problem. I hope your budgie is fine! 😊

Are Indian Almonds tree branches also safe for budgies?
@misty_blue

I researched for a while and didn't see Indian almond on any list (not on safe lists but also not on unsafe lists). To be safe, it's probably better to use other woods. Not all woods have been tested so some can't be found in the lists.

Eucalyptus leaves are safe to eat or not for budgies?

Can we use ice cream sticks to make budgie toy to chew? If Yes then Do we have to wash it, boil it of any other process.
@misty_blue
@misty_blue 3 года назад
Yes 😊 I used them to make a ladder for them. I washed them thoroughly with hot water, but no soap. Since the wood doesn't come directly from nature, it doesn't have mites, so it doesn't need to be treated very much. Of course you could also use apple cider vinegar or plain vinegar to disinfect them.
