Worked on a vertical press years back. The vertical press would pick up the plate, turn it a little, then bend it, repeat. I much preferred horizontal rolls, much simpler in my opinion to achieve accuracy & I got pretty adept using them. The times I had to pull out the "experienced" guys because they screwed up over pressing & rolling was nobodies business, until they realised just to let me do any bending/rolling. As for challenging death, not really. Although I remember a foreman back in my apprentice days kept lifting the end of a plate with a simple plate hook while I was rolling a long plate. I told him to move out the way as it would slip at any moment if he kept lifting on it. He ignored me (because "I'm the foreman, do as I say" BS) then subsequently got smacked in the face with a flying plate hook. I pi$$ed myself laughing as he walked away with his tail between his legs!! Another time I was left alone to do what I did best 🤣
Fry: So what do you do, Bender? Bender: I'm a Bender. I bend girders. That's all I'm programmed to do. Fry: Were you any good? Bender: Are you kidding? I could bend a girder to any angle - thirty degrees, thirty-two degrees... thirty-one... but I couldn't go on living once I found out what they were for. Fry: What? Bender: Making suicide booths!

Holy Moly ! Great video 😁 The start of the vid is impressive, who would believe it is possible to make gears and machinery so big that can still do actual mechanical work ?! These aren't just metal statues they are actually pieces of gigantic precision machinery! Also the thick plate steel being rolled into a gigantic barrel/pressure-vessel is truly amazing also. I am truly humbled by all the math involved in designing and manufacturing things like this, including the physics, the material-science,the metallurgy, the manufacturing process and techniques are all very amazing to me ! Thanks for a truly interesting vid ! 🌞 I just subscribed !
I was thinking the same gigantic machines that can cut within .000001 of a inch and bend .0000001 degrees... It's insane how they get such a big machine to do that.
I'm a Material Scientist, metalwork and woodwork teacher. You are correct, to work materials to shape and high degree of accuracy needs a very good understanding of the physical properties of these materials. One of the biggest challenges to making a light bulbs was drawing tungsten through a die, it was achieved 100 years ago. We are still learning about materials especially in the electronics field.
As awesome as this is… it’s nothing compared to the battleship armor bending machines they had back in the time of the world wars. 2 feet plus thick steel…
They had two plate rolls at Williamson Production Works in Lafayette . There was a verticals roll that would roll 6” thick by 6 feet wide into a 48” diameter while hot from the heater oven. It would roll 4” thick to the same dimension while ambient temperature. The Hauser Roll machines were “monsters”. I saw them doing that several times.

No será mucho?
