What do you expect when they've been taught Critical Race Theory since they were children? It's a derivative of Critical Theory which sharply splits everyone into either oppressors or oppressed. This one places white people as the oppressors no matter what. They say existing they are contributing to an oppressive symptom of whiteness like original sin. Anyone who denies being/acting racist means they are still a part of it. In grad school I saw that literally said out loud in a panel that was like a Chinese Communist struggle session.

What they fail to realise (or admit) is their insistance that white people can't participate in other people's culture is EXACTLY the thing they complain was done to them when they weren't allowed in ballet. But you know, they don't want a world of equality and fairness. They want revenge.

I'm extremely white, 1st generation Australian out of the UK. My husband's father is also very white, but his mum is an Australian first nations elder. My husband is white passing, but our boys, those boys are practically translucent. One snowy blonde, one a redhead, both with blue eyes and porcelain skin. But they do have a grandmother who is an elder, and they do get showered in gifts depicting 1st nations art and language. The looks I get having these boys enjoying their cultural heritage is wild. I do in fact find myself minimising it to make life easier, and that's really sad, because it is their heritage, and they should absolutely be able to experience it without judgement but here we are.

I didn't care because I was doing me and I felt really beautiful in those clothes. An Indian woman came to the shop where I worked and asked me where I was from. I told here in Maryland. She proceeded to ask me in a not so nice way "why are you wearing Indian clothes."? I looked her straight in her eyes and asked her "why are you wearing western clothes"? She had nothing more to say.. Keep dancing what ever kind of dance you want. Living your life, Be happy!

One thing I've noticed is it's not usually people from the country in question that have problems with "cultural appropriation", it's usually the second gen or later that came to the US and England. For example, there was a movie called Ghost in the Shell, based on a very popular anime where Scarlet Johansson played the lead. Asian Americans seemed very upset because a white actress was playing an Asian character. But when they asked Japanese people if they had a problem, they said no, the character is an anime character and isn't particularly any race - they had no idea anyone had any problem. I do understand there are legitimate racial and ethnic issues but woke culture has made everyone so sensitive. Phony issues get in the way of dealing with actual problems - wearing another culture's clothing is not an actual problem.

For those complaining it is never cultural appropriation for them to take and use white culture, it’s never taboo for them to use what they call white privilege to improve their lives, or just to go through their daily life. The multi dysfunctional standards they use to blame, judge, and attack others can never be used to look at their lives. No that is forbidden and racist, homophobic, or some other tag they will use to explain their views when facts can’t be used or go against them.

Set up a giant military force in the native land of the culture, using threat of violence/imprisonment to outlaw any and all expressions of said culture and then copying everything from it in one's own land, in place of the original culture? That's the only way I can think of.
@Undomaranel
@Undomaranel Месяц назад
Disagree. The whole "appropriation" thing came about because people DID take from other's cultures without crediting, a hold over from actual colonizing attitudes. Look at how black/ African American influence in music was handled as recently as Michael Jackson and you'll see corruption was very much alive. The issue is in the 2010s all the college kids HAD to prove how sensitive and anti-racist they were because Obama was president. That's when we saw the rise of "My culture is not a costume" and stereotypes being pulled (Speedy Gonzales, Apu). Just like body positivity, the cultural appropriation movement started out with a smart and solid message... until woke imbeciles bastardized it into the most basic and racist components.

I would think it's because the Irish don't face discrimination for being Irish (as far as I know). Usually, what makes cultural appropriation what it is is that people who don't experience discrimination use a certain part of another culture for their benefit even when the people of said culture face discrimination for exactly those aspects. That's how I've understood the concept, at least Edit: Some kind people have pointed out to me that I was utterly uneducated and the Irish did, in fact, go through decades or discrimination. Always happy to share the culture. I actually find it quite annoying when people criticize other's learning our dance and our ways. This is how I see it..... They are calling people out for "cultural appropriation" and telling them to stop when we are actively trying to share our culture and keep it alive. If someone were to come up to me and tell me they stopped some white girl from dancing and learning Hula to help preserve my culture I would tell them they are not helping preserve my culture at all by doing that, they are helping to erase it. There is a difference between mocking a culture and appreciating it and I would argue that the people criticizing this girl in this video for actually doing it right are the ones that are actually insulting the culture...

There's appreciation where the person is engaged in actually trying to get an understanding. Then there's mockery. Then there's ripping someone off in a shallow way. It would be worse if someone wore a culture's religious garments and, i don't know, recorded a music video. I grew up in Asia and a lot of my white classmates had spent as much time in Thailand or India or wherever as they had the west. They often spoke their local language. Cultural appropriation can only be committed by a dominating / oppressing culture - for example the culture of former colonialist European occupiers in America or Africa who committed "cultural appropriation" by exporting and selling (=exploiting) indigenous practices (and wealth) like dances, craftwork or clothing to their own advantage. They were and still are making money with it - and the original culture does not profit. This is the concept of cultural appropriation.

They'll make some excuse for why it's okay for them. It's only not okay if you're white practicing another culture. But it's okay if you're a different culture- they can do what you want. Their reason is because white people have a history of oppressing other cultures, so now we can't appreciate the cultures we used to oppress.
@SkyeAten

Exactly haha. And people are out there complaining that ballet shoes don't match darker skin tones, and are literally asking for attire to be changed to suit darker skin ( yes great, good to diversify), but this girl is just dancing, not even saying like "ah can we change this, I don't like that" and people are losing their minds... over the fact that she's simply dancing. lmao... why can't we all share and enjoy each others culture? It does call for some change sometimes, like the ballet shoes, but if that is OK, why not this girl just dancing???

Im a 40 yo white woman... From Australia and when I was in primary school, once a year the school would celebrate "international Day" where students who had drawn a country from a hat would come to school dressed up in traditional clothing from the country, give a presentation to the class on what they learned about the country and would bring in a dish from the country and we would all have a big lunch together where everyone could share the international food they bought and learn and celebrate true diversity and culture. It was the best! No one was offended and it was a very multicultural school! It brought everyone together!

Brava! Well said Amala! People these days are so ready to judge others because they perceive them to be one thing or another by the color of their skin or garments they wear. I applaud when someone of a different culture is willing to respectfully participate in another culture's tradition. To share the joy of something that has been shared from generation to generation. How else can we grow to respect the people and history it comes from. How else can we appreciate cultures other than our own or what is assumed to be "our own" or the people from which it comes if we are not willing to learn from and of other cultures The same with other faiths, other foods, other music. Thank you for sharing this!

By this logic all Europeans are racist just by the fact that we learn 3 to 5 languages depending on the country (I'm European and we don't see each other with a skin colour but from a cultural background based on the country or countries we are from and living in). The wrong cultural appropriation mindset is such an American idea, the rest of the world doesn't share or agree with, it's just showing how much literacy they have.

I've come to the conclusion that cultural appropriation is just another concept that's been retooled to act as a wedge issue. Divide and conquer is the oldest play in the book. Yes, it exists when someone doesn't give credit to the cultural origin or engages disrespectfully. But, most people are engaging in another cultural practice because they are truly interested or have some connection to it, however slight.
@jaredsalazarofficial
@jaredsalazarofficial Месяц назад
We all see the pattern here. Those who call "cultural appropriation" often are non-locals who assume they understand the culture, meanwhile locals appreciate others learning their culture.
