Looks like it handles properly - good takeoff and landing! They did a nice job with the shaking, pressure needle jumping, etc. I love the 109 in DCS (and did in countless older sims) but after hearing Flying Iron's engine sound I might end up with my first MSFS warbird for that factor alone. Really has the sound of some in-cockpit videos.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Cheers Josef! Yes, the 109 is definitely a bit of a handful, which I gather was accurate haha. There were one or two flight model issues, but FlyingIron already seem to be working on those (and indeed, they’ve done a lovely job with the aircraft overall). The DCS 109 is excellent, but I love having the entire world of MSFS to explore. If you do / did pick up the Messer, I hope you enjoy it! All the best : )

Hello Jackson, You firstly need to make sure that you have the BF109’s prop control set to manual (as demonstrated in the video). After that, I just use my normal prop axis control. The control bindings in MSFS are either “Propeller Axis”, or I suspect “Increase / Decrease Propellor Pitch” would work also (if you don’t have an axis available). I hope that helps? All the best : )

A fun little note, if you select the tropical filter the aircraft also has mounts added next to the cockpit. If the temperature is warm enough, an umbrella will be fitted for some shade.

A brilliant aircraft from FlyingIron once again. I've flown nothing else in the sim since I got this one and would probably have cost the ground crews many man hours in maintenance, particularly to the undercarriage. I was also surprised how tractor like it sounds in the cockpit and also double checked some of the videos online. Great touch with the wingman, thanks for another very informative vid.

Hi DC, The soundset is indeed a thoroughly impressive effort from FlyingIron! A little bit more supercharger whine would be nice during the flybys, but otherwise the 109 sounds very convincing. Definitely one of the best sounding aircraft in MSFS to date. I do hope you’re enjoying the “Messer” then! Happy flying and all the best : )

I do love inertial starters. I got chills from that crank. Having seen a BF-109 decades ago at an airshow where the CAF had a large part and the had some mock "dogfights" and ground attacks including their "Tora, Tora, Tora!" Runs. All with pyrotechnics for the bomb hits. One thing I remember is that sound. Spectacular. One thing I guess I have to get used to is the censored swastika. I get it but historical accuracy is a point of contention for me but everyone's doing it so unless I want to repaint, I'll have to settle for modern revisionism. On the weapons deal, if the don't want to go TacPac like VRS did, they could simulate the oxygen fired simulated gun fire like you see used at airshows. That keeps it "peaceful" but allows the wannabe airshow pilot do mock attack runs. On the side, I look forward to your briefings. Oh yeah, headphones are mandatory to enjoy this video. Crank it between narrations when he's showing the outside displays and you won't be sorry. QUESTION: Did the Gustav have a powered inertial starter or is it a work around to keep from animating a crew member cranking the fly-wheel?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Haha, I very much agree Kyle - there’s something very satisfying about an inertial starter. That sounds like a fun airshow! I’ve seen at least one 109 over the years and the sound really stuck with me also, specifically the whine of the supercharger (which is maybe lacking just slightly with the FI 109, though the sounds are otherwise excellent). I nearly made the same point about the swastika. I realise it’s a contentious subject, but I’m no fan of historical revisionism and personally, I’d rather see these aircraft as they flew. The only thing I will say there; these days (sadly?) even the real-world 109’s seemingly don’t have the proper markings, at least not the flying examples I have come across in RU-vid. So FlyingIron has “faithfully” recreated the modern aircraft in that respect. . . I would also like to see working armaments (as we’ve seen with the MILVIZ Corsair) and personally, I think that would be one of the next logical improvements for FlyingIron to make to their products (though I don’t believe they have any plans to do so). From the little that I know of the 109, I don’t believe it did have an electrical starter (the K variant in DCS still has to be cranked by the ground crew), I think it’s just a concession that FlyingIron have made for the sim (and fair enough!). Thank you very much once again! I’m glad you enjoyed the video : )

14:03 Slick as always! Warbird aeros are one of my favourite things to do. Top tips for barrel roll: before you pull up, pick a feature 90° off, pull straight up til ‘feet are on horizon’ then loaded roll to pull aircraft nose to your feature. Adjust controls to keep roll and pitch consistent. Aim for same degrees nose down as nose up. That’s the basics but let me know if you want the detail 👍🏻
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Thank you very much, sir! I knew it was a pretty abysmal attempt at a barrel roll haha; I’ve only done a very limited amount of aerobatics in the real world and as I mentioned during the video, it’s something I’ve forever been meaning to practice more of in the sim. I shall go away and give it another try and then come crawling back if it’s still a complete disaster ; ) Much appreciated, all the best!

GREAT flight. "One" of the best features of this plane are the engine sounds. I like the head on low pass view and the camera shakes when you pass by = wonderful. If you are a warbird pilot, this is a model you would love to fly. My only 2-cents is that the stick looks like it came off an old bird but the rest of the cockpit looks brand new. I do like that it has the spinny thing in front. Thanks for the review! !! !!!

Love the cinematic story with a wingman. Thank you for extra work you put into reviews. This is the level of detail I am looking for - a no brainer purchase a couple of days ago. A bit strange with the top of loop issue. Flying inverted in general is no problem. Guess we pull too much G over the top. Fun to figure out more. There is major flaw with such a great sound - Lack of fly by. FlyingIron works with Corsair model in DCS, they know the - hit F3 button for a fly by view. If they fix this, I will instantly buy the Spitfire and Hellcat. Promise.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Thanks very much Øystein, my pleasure as always - I’m just glad you enjoyed it! FlyingIron have pretty much slipped into the “day 1 purchase” category for me now; they’ve barely put a foot wrong since coming to MSFS and their dedication to their products after release, is also exemplary. I think the inability to fly a loop, was a bit of a flight model issue, which FI do seem to have addressed with the first patch. I guess we won’t see a native flyby view in MSFS until 2024 now haha, but I gather the most recent version of Flight Control Replay (actually, the same tool I used for my virtual wingman during this video) will include a flyby camera, so that might be worth checking out if you’re really keen. Many thanks once again! : )

I have it since day 1, strong contender for #1 Warbird in MSFS at the moment. Few notes on the review: -Radiator open = arrow right, not down -If tooltips are enabled, you can see plug fouling status right on the lever. Quite handy. -while all FI products have Workshop page in Tablet, this is the first one, where wear and tear is actually implemented AFAIK. In older products it's just for display (only engine stresses implemented). In Messer, many more component can fail with harsh usage or just randomly (notably landing gear). -Autopilot can be used outside of tablet with Keyboard/controller keybinds, of course GPS tracking and all usual modes can be used. No limitation on just HDG and ALT hold. -Simplified ground handling - only thing it does is link rudder input to differential brakes. Useful for people without rudder pedals. Aircraft has the same custom FlyingIron ground handling physics, this cannot be turned off. -Battery, disconnection should be only via tablet on ground (IRL done by ground crew), but if someone have Battery keybind on Honeycomb rocket switch, it works just with that.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Hello Tomas, Great to hear that you’re enjoying the 109 and I very much agree re the number 1 spot! - Haha indeed, I did mess up the operation of the radiator. I noticed whilst watching the video back; initially the control was in shadow, so I didn’t see the text there on the right of the control. - Tooltips?? Come now, that wouldn’t be very befitting of one of my videos : P - Yes, very true re the Workshop feature and it’s great to see FlyingIron flesh out that functionality further. - Your other points are noted and good to know. Cheers! Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Happy flying once again : )

In the loop, "the aircraft almost wanting to snap" would be because one slat went in before the other. During the war, this may have saved many an allied pilot who was in the sights of the Me-109 pilot and whose aim was put off momentarily. BTW , the Luftwaffe pilot had no idea of "BF-109"-to them , it was the ME-109 (pronounced "may" hundert neun"
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
100%, Dackah. The problem was, I couldn’t get over the top of the loop without the slats deploying, the 109 was just bleeding off too much energy in the manoeuvre (and I wasn’t able to get the aircraft through the loop any more quickly - I already had full flight control deflection). There was an issue with the aircraft’s flight model at the time, which has subsequently been corrected by FlyingIron. Cheers for the info. All the best : )

As ever, a great review. Regarding the engine sounds comment at 32:55 I mentioned this at Sim Outhouse. A deep powerful purr when viewing the external model, but a bit clattery inside - what AvAngel calls the 'tractor factor'. However, I was linked to some videos, and it is indeed a lot more authentic than I would have first believed. It's also been pointed out that you can't wear a modern bone-dome helmet in the 109 due to lack of head room. Hopefully, as you say, a pilot figure in WW2 garb will be forthcoming. I've never been that enamoured with the 109 in flight simming, but this is irresistible. I'm reaching the point where I'll buy anything Flying Iron produces. They are absolutely superb. Thanks for the comprehensive review.

Thanks once again, Paul! Haha indeed; I was initially unimpressed with the internal sounds, but totally changed my opinion when I heard the real thing. I guess the larger displacement plays its part, but there is definitely a “tractor factor” XD I gather a period-appropriate pilot will be added at a later date (if the most recent patches haven’t taken care of that already). I’ve always loved the way that the DCS 109 “feels” to fly (very convincing overall), but other than that, I’ve never been all that enamoured with the Messer. That’s one of the things that I’ve loved with doing these sorts of reviews though, it tends to give me a new appreciation for the aircraft covered and indeed, I’m a big fan of the 109 now haha (one certainly can’t go far wrong with any of FI’s output!). It’s not an “urge” Jocking, it’s a simple mispronunciation haha. As C-990 points out, I don’t think any of us could claim to be perfect linguists, even in our own languages, let alone someone else’s! To a Brit, the “s” and the “sh” don’t sound hugely dissimilar, whichever way round one puts them. Messerschmitt is an interesting one; the word became part of the English lexicon also and words / pronunciations often tend to change between borders and languages. You are of course correct; I mispronounced the name, but it wasn’t done intentionally and I highly doubt it lead to any confusion, as to what I was reviewing. I’ll try and get it right next time ; ) All the best!

In terms of the flight model, hands down the 109K wins (in fact, that addon always sticks in my mind as being one of the most convincing, when it comes to the “feeling” of flight). I jumped back into the DCS 109 just the other day, in order to compare and I have to say that visually, it’s looking a little bit dated now and I prefer the sounds of the MSFS 109 overall. Both are superb addons, I just find the DCS maps a little bit “uninspiring” these days and hence prefer flying in MSFS. Cheers and all the best! : )

That looks like a lot of flap area for takeoff. It looks the same as full flaps for landing. 10 to 15 degrees is pretty much standard flap setting for takeoff; any more and drag starts taking hold. All that flap area looks like it would do more to keep the aircraft on the ground than it would serve to help get it airborne. Does the 109 need flaps for takeoff in a clean configuration?

Hi Santa Six, For sure, each sim tends to have its own strengths and weaknesses and high speed aerodynamics / manoeuvring at the edge of the flight envelope, are not strengths of MSFS. I do prefer the flight model of the DCS 109 but, these days I generally just like to cruise around and for that sort of thing, there’s no better sim than MSFS (unfortunately, the maps in DCS just feel a bit dated / restrictive). Thank-you, thank-you so very much for another most informative review.. This is Guerry from the States, and when it comes to aircraft reviews, iTB is far and beyond my favorite “RU-vid” channel for new MSFS addon products. By no means have I made a shrine to your channel. But your reviews contain the most salient aspects of a product, and you package it in a video that is not too long to bring snoozes from the audience and not too short for the audience to feel starved for information. I guess that is sufficient to satiate my sycophantic obsequious intent to gain favor (JUST KIDDING!). As with you, I’ll state what I did not like before that which I did. Actually, this is not so much a complaint as it is a disappointment. I have many more hours of practicing with other aircraft before I ever attempt to tackle the BF-109 and enjoy it. This is where replicating flight characteristics so well has backfired to a degree Face it; fighter aircraft have one purpose. They exist to mitigate an opponent’s aerial advantage(s). In the case of the BF-109 and others, they are essentially a package of canon(s) and machineguns that have to fly fast with the dexterity and coordination of an Olympic gymnast. Furthermore, these WW2 warbirds weighed about the same as general aviation aircraft, but were powered by thousands of horsepower cranking a propeller that weighed-in at a quarter of an imperial ton. On takeoff, the pilot cannot apply full power until air passed over the control surfaces fast enough to overcome the tremendous torque generated by the engine turning that huge propeller. Otherwise, one might find himself upside down, making a takeoff much more difficult. Given all their advantages, they are very unforgiving. But please do not misunderstand me. I would jump in the cockpit in a New York minute if I had the skill. I love to fly cross country, but I also like to get to my destination in a timely manner. In MSFS, I can fly any aircraft I want, and the maintenance and fuel are free When it comes to what I most earnestly appreciate, the detail FlyingIron put into this simulator almost pops from the monitor as a 3D image. It is absolutely beautiful. It is stunning. It is the most realistic resolution I have seen yet in an addon. FlyingIron should spend the afternoon on me patting each employee on the back in a most sincere manner. Furthermore, as far as I could tell from my past, in-depth research into WW2 fighters, their BF-109 imitates exceptionally close to the real aircraft. The designing staff and programmers have definitely earned their pay with this software. I have already described my disappointment with MSFS for not allowing weapons to be shown, et. al. For anyone who has read this far and wishes to know my reasoning, I will happily repeat my statements. Again, thank-you so very much for introducing us to FlyingIron’s BF-109. I highly encourage replies to my comment, whether good or bad. For my primary objective for subscribing to this channel is to learn from whomever is willing to enlighten me.

Haha! Feel free to try and “gain my favour” as much as you like, Guerry : P In all seriousness though, thank you very much for your kind words regarding the channel / it’s content! I can see what you mean regarding the trickiness of the 109 and indeed, the aircraft is not a great option for everyone; but I suppose we can’t hold FlyingIron to account, for trying to faithfully recreate the Messer in all of its challenging glory. As with any aircraft, practice makes perfect ; ) I 100% agree regarding the weapons and actually, since FlyingIron market the 109 directly, they are free to add weapons should they so wish. So far, we’ve yet to see any such functionality on their products, but the addition of visually modelled weapons / visually modelled effects (as we’ve seen on the MILVIZ Corsair), seems to me like the next logical step they should be taking, to enhance their (already excellent) products further. Once again, thank you very much for your thoughts. Happy flying and have a great weekend! : )

Its basically useless for me at this stage..
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 10 месяцев назад
Hello Matt, Well, the 109 has a castoring tailwheel - ie no steering per se. The aircraft has to be turned with rudder (which will only become effective with a decent amount of airflow / prop wash going over it) and differential braking. I believe if you turn on the simplified tailwheel option (from the tablet), that may help you out. The 109 is indeed a pig during the takeoff haha; I don’t know how true to life that behaviour is but, it will be particularly tricky to handle using a gamepad. As I mentioned during the video, I find that full deflection on both the rudder and the aileron, before even beginning the takeoff run, is the best way to go. I had the same issue with the engine dying during the landing; again, I don’t know whether that behaviour is accurate but, given that FlyingIron left it in after the first patch, I would have to assume that the cutout has been intentionally modelled. . . I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best!

Thanks you very much once again, SW. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! Haha. Obviously I don’t have any real-world experience with the 109, but I hear it can be a handful. FlyingIron have done a pretty good job at replicating that XD Cheers and all the best : )

Does anyone else have a constant banging sound they hear when flying the plane? It happens when I put the gear up. I can't figure out what it's from.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Hi SW, That sound is most probably the slats deploying / retracting, as you manoeuvre / reduce speed? If you look out over the leading edge of the wing during your manoeuvres, I’ll bet you see the slay deployment coinciding with the banging : ) I hope that helps. All the best!

I got this plane and have a strange problem. Elevator control is fine on the ground and during take off but during flight I lose all elevator input. The stick or the elevators do not move. Anyone else seen this? I also get weird ground effects and the aircraft becomes indestructible even after the first patch.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
That’s all very odd, Lee - a shame to hear that the first patch didn’t fix your issues. I really can’t come up with too many ideas as to what might be causing the problem. . . Is your sim flight model set to “Modern”? Are you sure you haven’t got any control binding issues etc? With those sorts of issues, it’s probably worth getting in touch with FlyingIron directly (I’d imagine they’ll be pretty responsive). Sorry I can’t really be of more help on that one. All the best!

Curious if you wouldn't mind sharing your Track IR settings? Your head movements are very smooth 👍

Hi Exoneer, You’re welcome to try my TrackIR profile, it’s available for download over on Flightsim.to (just search “Into the Blue” and you should find it). I hope that helps! All the best : )

Great vid as usual. Have you tried the K version in DCS? That’s a handful as well!

Thanks very much Lead, I’m really glad you enjoyed it! I jumped back into the DCS 109 just the other day actually. In terms of the flight model, hands down the 109K wins (in fact, that addon always sticks in my mind as being one of the most convincing, when it comes to the “feeling” of flight). I I have to say that visually, the K is looking a little bit dated now and I prefer the sounds of the MSFS 109 overall, but both addons are superb and both are complete handful, yes XD Cheers and all the best! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations agree with you completely. The DCS model could do with an update. The MSFS 109 is now in my hanger due in large part to your excellent review. 😃

Does anyone else have a landing gear problem on my console the landing gear doesn’t come down at all the emergency release doesn’t work either
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Hi Popzom, You don’t appear to be the only console user that’s having a problem with the landing gear. Have you checked the tablet, to make sure that you don’t have any systems damage etc? Given that I’ve read a number of similar comments at this point, I’m afraid it could be that there’s a bug with the 109 on the console. . . Other than throughly checking the tablet for any aircraft damage, I’m afraid I can’t really offer up any other suggestions on that one. If the issue persists, I would recommend getting in touch with FlyingIron directly. Cheers, all the best!

So is the BF 109 in the MSFS marketplace or is on a website?

Sorry for the slow reply StorageShock. At the time of recording, the 109 was only available from the FlyingIron website, but I believe it may also now be available from the in-sim Marketplace (and if it isn’t yet, it should be soon : ) I hope that helps. All the best!
