Gates exist as a necessary mechanic for the campaign, you need them to be able to wall off over train tracks. They exist cause the game needed something for the train tracks.
they existed before the campaign if i remember correctly, the only reason why they are never used in survival games is because they have low hp compared to their surface area, and although they do allow for easy freeway for large amounts of troops, you can always just delete a section of the wall and be better off for it, towers also completely replace them for things like getting rangers outside your walls for kiting. gates are and have always been horrible well before the campaign.
Now that was a strange map and I loved it. Firstly liked the 100 days limit more, since you can clear map and settle in more places. The pockets were sooo satisfying. Also I enjoy clearing Doom Towns early like this so that the resources they drop are actually very valuable and worth all the effort. Can speed up expansion immensely. When they are cleared at the very end of the game the resources they drop are pretty much worthless at that point.
I gotta fight the boredom in the days before the final wave on 100 days sometimes and I get a little to overwhelmed on 80 days it's a weird gap in difficulty for sure
I don't know if a step less enemy population actually has less mutants and giants, but there are 12 and 6, so I guess this is maximum population and only 100 instead of 80 days.
I think gates would be more useful if it was a 1x1 wall block that lowered into the ground. same hp as a wall but passable. And of course don't forget the lock feature...
