Bruh what?! Donald glover?! Jordan peele? They are too new to have any impact and influence. Only guy to have impact besides boots Riley that you mentioned is Jordan peele
@@vvsvellaire1455 idk about that. And I'm not calling they cloned Tyrone a knockoff when I say this, but there have been a lot of Get out type beat, Atlanta type beat projects since they came out lol. Also Donald Glover was doing Atlanta before Jordan Peele's first movie so he's up there. I really think afrosurrealism became popular in film because of them.
Man I wish this movie wouldn’t get lost as just another good movie, the message is so relevant and in our faces.… We absolutely have a genuine problem with brainwashing through consumption rather it’s Music, Food, Vanity, etc…. Upholding “cloned” personalities in our communities…. if we remove the satire, this could be used as an educational piece.
Art imitating life, just be happy that you saw through the vail. More truth hidden in plain sight as intended. If movies like this weren't labeled as comedies I don't think they would be funded
THIS THIS THIS! even with the satire I think it still does a great job of getting an important message across. Ive said it before and I’ll say it again: every Black person needs to watch this movie and really take it all in. Bravo to Juel
@7hundred7eventy7 The black church has always been a revered place in our community; both historically & currently--which made it the perfect base of operations for the agency. There are layers of context to that; dressing up misinformation & the guise of "religion" to maintain the status quo is probably one of the deepest nuggets in the film
@@francisko338 yeah like I said- maybe back in the day when we listened to our elders. The church is no longer a pillar of the black community, as much as I want that back.
@7hundred7eventy7 Yes, there is a generational shift in attitudes; more people are opting for spirituality versus organized religion, but depending on your location (I'm from the south), the black church--for better or worse--still has a cultural vice grip on our communities. Many people are practically reared in the church, with some of our earliest memories being tied to it. Example, I could probably sing a few words of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" or any number of devotional songs & typically, any black person within a few feet can finish the lyrics. Some may even say the church is an early form of brainwashing. Essentially, from birth, you're not really given a choice--you're subjected to an idea & are told what to believe without really asking any questions. It shapes a lot of our opinions, decision-making, & how we navigate through life. I think the movie touches on that aspect & while yes, attitudes are changing about the church, it's still largely a hub for projecting a belief system. Just like with the perm kits, the chicken, & club music, it's another "soft target" hidden in plain sight, but specifically because the church is so socially/culturally intertwined, I think it makes it more dangerous than all the others. Easier access to spread disinformation; control cloaked in morality. Hence the agency's need to headquarter there.
The scene where Fontaine breaks down his mom’s door is actually the scariest scene to me. The realization that it was all fake stuck with me for days after I watched.
@@oprincesslivie02 me and my girlfriend were wondering did he never think to open the door before then? Like he went all those years without seeing her and just never questioned it?
That person in the bloody clothes walking down the street was the first fontaine. You can tell by the way the second fontaine was looking like he kinda of recognize that person but couldn't tell because they was down the street. Frog saying off to see the wizard again is the confirmation. It's the little things in this movie that made it good have to rewatch to see new points of views.
The squidward connection blew my mind because it’s so fucking accurate my jaw is on the floor, and it makes sense for them to be the ones to figure it out because the original fontaine + plot armor duh
Black dynamite is the FUNNIEST SHIT 😂😂 I first seen it when I was like 17. I'm 33 now, and white lol I try to show any of my white friends it when I can. Lol the end, when he's fighting the Japanese scientist guy, he throws the boomerang knife and it cuts the scientist hand off. Black dynamite jumps into the scene abs says HA! I THREW THAT SHIT BEFORE I WALKED IN THE ROOM!! 😅😅😅 I love it! So many good parts. That one fight when he accidentally for real hits the guy, and he's like MUTHA FUCKA! and it cuts back and it's a COMPLETELY different guy now, not the one that got mad 😂 they didn't give a fuck 😅😅
You hit all the points. As a 90's kid I'm glad you touched on the Spongebob thing that was so deep, this movie was so good! Also I love the plot of the movie too. It's saying the people are the ones that can make the change and bring down the system. The people of Glen were able to come together, trick the people watching them, and expose the operation. It's a great feel good message and a great showcase of black talent.
That movie was awesome. The plot, the twists, the characters. The Isaac/Fontaine subplot was dope. I love a hood movie and a redemption story. Add sci-fi and I’m in heaven. Only thing missing was a Billy D Williams cameo. Loved it.
It's crazy to me that Tyrone's main color is green and teal linking him to squidward and Yo-yo the most opmistic one who never gives up even as she's mistreated by those she works for has the main color of yellow. Y'know like Spongebob. And I guess Slick Charles would be Patrick? Redish pink, closer with Yo-yo, hair that kinda makes him taller like Patrick's pointier head What am i saying
This is truly a horror movie. I linked the lack of security in this town as part of the experiment. They showed more than one "Glen". Why wouldn't this be a social experiment as well?
@124dkg9 ding ding ding. 100%, opps would have been killed and no one would really know except another clone which doesnt matter to the organization anyway
The movie's entire premise counted on people being stupid. The evil secret science people literally facilitated their own failure, the Nixon guy gave away his trigger word which opened the door for anyone to take the suited clone and have the suited clone kill Nixon. Somehow they didn't see that Yoyo hair was a wig despite testing black hair for years through the white dj and hair salon chick. And they had the whole hood monitored but never caught on to two of their clones plotting with a prostitute to overthrow their control. The evil people were stupid and sloppy and the town of the Glenn got very very lucky. That's the movie. The crazy part,....this movie could be viewed as a practice for the real secret science people controlling everything. The movie said and showed there are other areas like the Glenn around America, maybe the downfall of the scientists and clone lab in the Glenn was just a trial run for if other cities try and make that happen elsewhere. So that then next time the evil scientists won't be as stupid as they were in the Glenn. I only bring up this theory because of that homeless guy. The homeless guy was basically giving the trio clues throughout the movie like he was a robot or a genie or witch. He basically led them to where they needed to be for the plot to happen, as if he was part of everything and had a purpose beyond just saying some random mutterings to the trio. What if, the scientists were using the trio as a test for how to spot future disruptive personalities and mentalities (Malcom X type people) and then deal with them? The movie ended in a typical fiction fashion, the day is saved (only in that one city tho) and all the clones of the Glenn are freed. But as I watched and meditated on the ending, it felt more like a dishonest conclusion rather than the feel good ending they were shooting for. They won that day but what about tomorrow, what if the Government in that world turns on Black people because of the clones being exposed and they retaliate in all the other clone cities. The movie left me wondering how does a situation like this realistically end, because I know for sure that ending wasn't it. It was too positive, despite the darker implications of the premise of the movie and Tyrone disrupting the old ass clone's story about him and Fontaine being the only ones.
I think a lot of the so called plot holes in this movie can be explained by the organization's hubris. They're so overconfident they don't give a shit. You can see it in the scene where the nightclub chases down the Scooby gang and they just let them go. They don't give a hoot.
Thank you for your analysis, a banger as always. That Squidward theory is solid, and I'll rewatch it through that lense. A few points, though. 1. YoYo is meant to be an outlier. She's represents the people in the hood that have the drive and intelligence to recognize the indoctrination but give in "hood circumstances." 2. Sheep were the first cloned mammals, so all you need are key members in a controlled environment, the hood, to clone to shepherd the flock. (Dboy, Pimp, and TD Jakes..er..I mean.. Religious figure). 3. The hair, in several African diaspora beliefs, is where we keep our soul, our power. Its telling that that is the hardest to genetically manipulate. Great video as always, keep going sir!
I was writing a book with the same twist ending of turning black people white but not with clones😢 watching this made me feel like the Tyrone watching the news at the end
I hope you're not discouraged from finishing. There's a reason why multiple people will have the same or similar thematic or plot points around the same point in time, as it'll usually reflect something that's very relevant in the current times, and is a thought bubbling in the general sub conscious. And that particular one is definitely of current relevance, just considering the current post Cold War dominance of capitalism, and the way it likes to kinda wipe out organic, and genuine longstanding cultures and communities, in favor of trying to form everyone everywhere into an alienated, homogenized sameness in order to make them better consumers, out of a need to fill the emptiness in their lives
That's just on a general level too. There's more specific ways that theme is extremely relevant now, with unchecked gentrification of too many city neighborhoods/communities, and also the way the internet and social media makes too many people all have to follow the same things
This movie reminded me personally of Soylent Green (1973) and John Carpenter's They Live (1988). I also noticed that the Preacher looked like Fredrick Douglass and the church was playing Back That Azz Up LOL, I thought it was funny asf and maybe spoke to the hypocrisy of Black Christians
@NineNerdYards I believe that parts have to be real... like the music blaring over those two dudes fighting. They know more than the public about the music "they" release. That, the food, and the action of putting stuff in it to control the people. Also the "control group" idea of a town or a certain part of the country get "special things" in order to watch and see what happens. During covid, certain vaccines were sent to certain parts of the country. And then there were different reactions based on what company made the vaccines. It all seems like things that are too easy for the gov to do.
another Easter egg is the fact everything has been in front of their faces the whole time but they just look over it like how in the end he sees on tv “clones” getting found and sees himself and the fact him and his friends don’t get the idea he’s a clone also just “ain’t that you Tyrone” shows how oblivious everyone is irl when looking at stuff for instance it might or might not be coincidence Jamie fox had rumors of being cloned before this movie aired and then he’s one of the lead stars in a clone movie 😲
Thank you for your professional approach to reviewing this movie. I loved it, and was puzzled as to why many of my favorite volgers and video essayist did not have any comments. I'm sure it is linked to the generous use of hood-vernacular and their fear of cancellation as the dialogue is a minefield of the N-word and jokes about hood culture. Still this movie is artfully constructed giving me wonderful Easter-eggs to discover with each re-watch. It's hard to believe this was Juel Taylor's debut film! I look forward to his next offering.
I love weird black artistic media, the representation it holds with neurodiversity and the stories based in reality it shows us. I'm A Virgo and They Cloned Tyrone are my favorites of 2023!
So... people will think I'm crazy, but the government started cloning trials with rats in the early 80's and progressed to larger mammals. By the time they started talking about "dolly" the sheep, they were already testing how they could "modify" or "enhance" the subjects with gene alterations. Not to mention their cross-breeding attempts like the goat-sheep hybrid "geap"... really weird that they stopped talking about it, especially since you can literally clone you pet for $50,000 in China.
The interesting thing I’ve found when studying this film is 1. Who’s the “they” in the title . 2. The old Tyrone represents to me sometimes how it’s our own people who sell us out even though they think they are doing so for the “greater good”, because his solution was for unity (which is an innocent desire) however he wanted to unite through assimilation when that’s usually never helpful but unity through diversity is the real power
I have been very excited for this movie for a while now. When I found out they were having a midnight showing of this movie at my local theatre before it got put on netflix I had to go see it. It was pretty great. I do understand the complaint about how was a escort, a pimp, and a drug dealer able to uncover this mass conspiracy but it's a personal weakness of mine when some random underdogs are just able to stumble their way through victory through smarts and a bit of luck.
Right off the rip. ha ha "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" = Donald Sutherland "They Cloned Tyrone" = Keifer Sutherland I was really getting "Body Snatchers" vibes from this movie when eventually Kiefer Sutherland showed up. me: "OK, I see you." Of course "Body Snatchers" was a jab at Social/Political brainwashing.
This movie is connected to the Black Dynamite universe, Fontaine is sipping Anaconda Malt Liquor, now I wonder if it had the same effect to blacks as the Dynamite movie had
"A white woman with a weave" I was holding my laugh the whole time till you utter that phrase and i just burst out laughing ...now i am definitely watching this movie
It’s very obviously an allegory to how the government keeps black communities down but the right wing took this movie and completly misunderstood it embarrassingly predictably
@@ididntaskverified3663so the solution is to ignore, gloss over, hide, cover up etc real history and current ongoings for the sake of "unity"? to ignore that it's happening/happened and not talk about it, is to uphold the very systemic oppression we should be seeking to destroy.
Movies like this give me hope that great movies can still be made. When studios leave them alone and let writers make the movie they want genuine art can be made Loving these black cinema films
Fantastic analysis of the movie. I can tell you really did your research and even have a point of your own to add to the discussion. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Just one of the best films ive seen in the past 5 yrs tbh. It was funny as well as introspective but the elements of horror were what really stood out to me. To have psychological horror mixed with scientific atrocities based in real life made the tone that much more sinister. There were parts that demanded to be taken seriously but the movie always managed to use its comedy to cope with the trauma. Just -chefs kiss- beautiful. Yo yo is my favorite and i wish i could watch her own series of Nancy Drew-esque adventures.
but think about it. “really these are the three people that uncover everything”. exactly why they kill n reclone over and over and clear their steps. i think the simplicity fits exaclty in the plot when considering reality
Yeah I get the WHY they are the ones that figured it out. My nitpick is about the how. I was just saying they could have made it more interesting if they actually had to do something special to infiltrate the base and get information. But they really just walked in and out like anybody else could have.
This video essay is by far the best one I've seen (if anyone knows any other good ones please lmk) on this movie. All the other ones I've seen just kinda explain all the surface level stuff and don't really do any research or go super deep into their own thoughts, so its just a 10 min synopsis. Just subscribed, loved it
19:22 Holy s**t Im glad Im not the only who picked up Clarence Thomas vibes from the OG Fontaine. Great analysis of this movie. You've gained a follower.
Saw the movie today and loved your video, some scenes left me speechless and gut ridden like Fontaines first death and his need for a mother help or presence. The film was a shocker with great twists and i have so many questions still
I think with them resolving and discovering everything so easily, it’s a nod to complacency within the community, we very frequently encounter what should be life altering and knowledge of where products our community uses are coming from, who owns them and how harmful they are but we just mind our business and move on
Duggg this film too, especially the performances and the lofi scifi! Great analysis, per usual. Thanks 9NY! Speaking of which-- and you probably get tired hearing this haha (but it's because we luv/respect your takes sooo much)-- when you coming out with a breakdown of Atlanta's final episode, YO?! Dying for it.
15:56 I have never ever watched SpongeBob and didn't have a clue what that little boy was saying. But I started LMAO when this Squidward walked into a home whose address was 304, and we all know what that stands for on the internet.
I think it should be pointed out that the car that Yo-Yo saw was not the car that Issac and his goon was in. She saw the "company" car that picked up Fontaine's dead body. That was how the conspiracy really unravelled. Another reaction channel compared the "Sponge Bob" life lesson to the "Thomas the Tank Engine" life lessons in Bullet Train. Also, black hair being "stubborn" is kind of a thing. The organisation has been working for a very long time. They've become complacent due to the power they have over people. Notice the surveillance equipment was from the 60's. One guy was taking notes on paper and pad. No need to spend money on certain things when clones are so expensive! Also Frog knew a lot but who would believe him. I'm sure many others found out the secret and were "removed" by company men like Nixon. Afterall it was his job to "clean up."
21:19 think the whole point is that the agency doesn't care if some people figure it out because the think they're powerless. the real difference that allowed our protagonists to storm the facilities and expose them was because they got their community to come together, wich the agency thought could never happen. if it stayed just three of them, they really wouldn't have been much of a threat
Original Fontaine is a geneticist. So with that being understood it is likely he is a very high iq individual. Who else to find the underground cloning operation than the person who really got it going. Honestly a great fucking movie. Will likely be watching it again quite a few times.
I started watching this movie without really looking at the title, so i was not really aware of the cloning. Making this movie one of the greatest watches cause it was super trippy
Olympia black means nothing, damn. I was doing mental gymnastics trying to crack that, I even somehow linked it to the World Record short from the Animatrix 😆
Yeah I would think the words allude to black exceptionalism given how the word Olympia connotates to the Olympics and the name meaning for Olympia is "from mount Olympus"
Thank you for this analysis and explanation of this movie. I didn't fully understand it after watching it a couple of times. Also, I fell asleep on it both times so there's that. But, now I have greater understanding. I think I'll give it another go. I hope I don't fall asleep on it again.
Accidentally clicked a trailer i couldnt wait and wasnt let down. I watched that shit twice. Made me have hope for new cinema. Hopefully the director will be pushed
I think a lot of the so called plot holes in this movie can be explained by the organization's hubris. They're so overconfident they don't give a shit. You can see it in the scene where the nightclub chases down the Scooby gang and they just let them go. They don't give a hoot.
The first two acts of this movie were amazing. The third act wasn’t as good. I don’t think the takeover of the the lab worked because the action was shot and choreographed poorly. However, I really liked this movie even with its flaws. Looking g forward to Juel Taylor’s next film.
Y'all watch Gravity Falls? Weird synchronicty, in the clone episode Dipper finds a magic photocopier and clones himself. His first clone he gives the name he always wanted but could never pull off Tyrone.
