I'm actually surprised how serious this adapter looks. The outer casing seams to be injection molded and someone has made a really good job packing everything in such a small form factor. As a designer I can say that someone has put a lot of hours and some money developing this thing. I hope we will soon see a video with someone charging a Leaf with it. This would be a real game changer for the Leaf. In Sweden where I live the ratio between CCS and CHAdeMO chargers is more then 10:1. I would definitely buy one.

Fortunately here in the UK there is provision for ChadeMo in most of the new charging hubs being built. Many networks recognise that early adopters still exist in quite large numbers.

@@trevorberridge6079 I'm not sure if that's true.. Where it is there tends to be only one or two chademo, shared with CCS without dual charging.

I'd like to see the whole thing potted though once the design is more final... at 300V+ DC there is a substantial arcing potential to have that many parts that close together... especially since the contactor isn't breaking both positive and negative.

@KCTalksEV 9 месяцев назад
It will be a game changer for the LEAF and the Triplets if they can get a reliable CCS to ChaDeMo adapter, purely as they will now be able to access the entire network. In the UK, there are still ChaDeMo being installed, however give it 10 years and these cars will only be able to 7kW AC charge. When the Leaf 62 and UX 300e can get in excess of 200-250 miles, it may be less of a problem. However, for the Leaf 40 (and earlier), if the price is also right this will be a game changer. I believe Muxan will do a CCS conversion kit for around 3450 euro).

Thank you for reporting on and researching of this topic, Dala. Everything I've observed so far indicates that any successful CCS-to-CHAdeMO adapter is probably going to be rather large. I'm concerned that attempting to fit all the necessary electronics into the confines of a handle-style block of plastic, like shown in the video, is not a good approach. It's going to weigh down on the car's receptacle and induce physical stress over time. I'd much rather see a design in the form of a briefcase or box that can rest on the ground and have a separate cable (~2m long) attached to it that's terminated on an ordinary CHAdeMO plug. In North America, it should have inlets for both CCS-1 and Tesla NACS. Europeans would probably be fine with just a CCS-2 inlet. I'd rather have an adapter that takes up some physical space, has some real world electronic flexibility and durability and actually works . . . unlike the "convenient" one built into a handle that doesn't!
@Outworlder
@Outworlder 8 месяцев назад
"It's going to weigh down on the car's receptacle and induce physical stress over time. " - The question is, is that something the connector cannot handle? Because there are some really heavy CHADeMO connectors + cable out there. Most CCS are not as heavy.

Agreed, I reckon they shortly close the charge port contactors in the car to sense the battery voltage. To avoid pack voltage on the CCS inlet they leave that one contactor open. With that sense phase done the car side contactors can do their thing fully separating pack and charger as appropriate.

In CCS the EVSE sets the voltage and the EV measures it before closing its contactors. In Chademo it is the other way round, so you need to separate the two sides during the handshake phase.

looking inside, it has all the necessary components! maybe there should be two contactors, but in fact there are already too many contactors in the circuit, the car has two+1s in the battery and one in the PCU, the internal charger has 2+1s with precharge This self contactor is therefore only for safty to interrupt its operation in case of adaptery failure. On the adapter, it is necessary to turn on the 12V relay circuits on the ato side and communicate all toghter and then send the combined can+ information to the ccs CP line.

The one contactor not a problem, because, you have 2 contaktors inside car battery, you have 2 contactors in charger - and the HD wires never powered with on end not connected. The 2 contactor reguirment is that, if you put cable on water, then catastrofe happens, put you allready have many conatctors in line, thats already dooing safety stuff both ends! I thinks even one contactor dosent needed, but some safeti 400V DC + is not bad at all! because one is 0V and other is live 400V DC + and you know witc is higger voltage.

Like Dala I wouldn't trust this when it hasn't been tested for real. I also don't trust that they advise adding a resistor to make it work. Why didn't they put it in to start with? Sounds like they're just trying to avoid giving a refund. I'd be surprised if the resistor solved all the issues. If it did then I'd expect the company to put the resistor in future units BEFORE they ship them out. But I think it's a case of buyer beware - caveat emptor.

I read on another article that some official Nissan group does not trust this adapter and that it has not been tested in North America. You take risks if the adapter and charger does not work together. Given NACS are the new standard in North America, I might as well wait until the new cars come out with the NACS plug. Hopefully Nissan will go with the flow and place NACS plugs in their EVs. I would love to get another Nissan EV, yet if they sell EVs with no NACS plug, i will have to look at other EV options.

I think it's actually quite awesome what was made here, certainly not easy... but is it legal to use this device? In case of some 'glitch' one could theoretically fry the charger or worse, the battery.... I wonder if both the protocols are secured on both ends to cover such unforeseen usage.

this is really interesting! We need affordable ways to get CCS charging for CHAdeMO-vehicles. CHAdeMO-vehicles will be around for several years. Unless they can charge from CCS, they eventually have to rely on AC only, and become short range commuters, without option for occasional long trips. I guess an adapter will probably be the less expensive option. While a CHAdeMo to CCS modification-kit will be more expensive. But a kit will be more user friendly.

The use of the battery and the need to charge it via USB-C is an interesting choice. I wonder why they don't just trickle charge it off the 12v coming from the pilot pin? Maybe it caused the voltage to sag too much, dropping down too low so that it wasn't in compliance with J1772 voltages? The spec requires "vehicle present" to be ~ 9v via pull-down resistors between Pilot and Signal Ground.

Probably only a very low current sensing circuit not feasible to charge a battery. I decided to buy a Tesla with the NACS charging port (I don't think you have these in Europe, or do you?) Anyways, in my short assessment, NACS is superior in pretty much every way to both Chademo and CCS. As I'm sure you know, most of the US domestic manufacturers have coalesced around NACS within the past few months so it seems like CCS and Chademo are pretty much dead men walking in the US.
