When Alta Motorcycles went out of business Anton Wass saw an opening in the market. We asked him what he thinks lead to the failure of Alta and how will the Stark Future project be different.
Anton Wass is the CEO and co-founder of the exciting new Stark Future electric motorcycle company. Since their launch only a few months ago, the Stark Varg has received 5,000 orders and has become the highest selling dirt-bike model seemingly overnight. We talk about Antons history in business, the genesis of the Stark project, racing, an electric future and how a lack of sustainability is hampering the motorcycle industry. This is the debut podcast for our new European studio, so we hope to be bringing you more great content going forwards!

Ultimately it will be performance that kills gas bikes. In the right hands, E bikes are going to hole shot every single race. No gears, instant torque, back brake on the handle bar, less gyroscopic force.... The sh..t these pros are going to do on an ebike in the future is going to blow our minds.

If the agreement between Alta and Harley Davidson was as you say, then H.D. was in breach of that agreement the moment they stopped funding Alta, and Alta therefore had no obligation, at that point, to refrain from seeking other funding sources ... so I don't buy it. We'll never know unless someone who actually knows shares it with the world. If I had to guess, I'd say H.D. pulled out for 2 reasons: 1-Alta wasn't profitable, and 2-H.D. got into bed with Alta for the tech, and once Alta shared it with them the decided they could use what they learned to develop it on their own. When BRP purchased Alta, they publicly stated they were not interested in furthering the development of Alta's bikes, but only in owning Alta's tech. Don't know what was so special about their battery technology, but 2 pretty big companies saw something in it.

Ive been really excited to see electric dirt bikes after riding a stealth bomber about 7 years ago. Ripping through the trees with an electric motor feels like you are flying. Being able to hear your mates and chuck some banter around adds a new level of fun. The torque of an electric motor is incredible. Having the option for the rear brake on the left hand is a game changer. It creates a new riding style that feels way more playful and controlled, you can tip the bike over and two wheel drift into a right hand corner like riding a MTB. I really hope these bikes make it to Aus.

@@craigallen111 I think he’s saying with non motocross or sx riding. Enduro & hard enduro you use the clutch relentlessly, preloading the flywheel and slipping the clutch to not have it spin. @fetB
@fetB Год назад
@@stevenllewellyn8906 how would it spin with traction control. It's literally what it is designed to do, and its so much more effective with an electric motor because, unlike an ICE, it can stop and rev up at will. That said, it is true that the riding is different, as the clutch acts as a manual, variable traction control, but at the same time, this could very easily be emulated by mapping the same effect onto a button, or a lever for that matter, which means, effectively, nothing about the riding would change. Instead of a friction plate, the output is then temporarily, manually adjusted with the same lever telling the motor controller how much torque is to be delivered. The kind of power curve, meaning linear or progressive, could even be changed on the fly. Not to mention, this would also eliminate clutch fade.

Alta was like a very good university project but they could not produce it. It was too much a backyard build. Stark is doing it at a production thinking level and i hope they succeed. They are doing it the right way i think and building the bike from the ground up for electric vs adapting. Like tesla in a way. If they can control the price and make it affordable with good parts and service they have a very good shot at making a dent in the market. Their biggest argument is the absence of noise and emission ( even if producing battery is not much better) it should open area that were only accessible to mtb for noise reason. The motorsport haters are going to be confronted by their own arguments…. I predict a lot of $ from mtb is going to migrate to electric off-road markets. The possibility to travel 5-6h into the mountain or forest in almost silence is going to be very attractive.

Here > Subject: Green Is Not So Green > What is a battery?' I think Tesla said it best when they called it an Energy Storage System. That's important. > > They do not make electricity - they store electricity produced elsewhere, primarily by coal, uranium, natural gas-powered plants, or diesel-fueled generators. So, to say an EV is a zero-emission vehicle is not at all valid. > > Also, since forty percent of the electricity generated in the U.S. is from coal-fired plants, it follows that forty percent of the EVs on the road are coal-powered, do you see?" > > Einstein's formula, E=MC2, tells us it takes the same amount of energy to move a five-thousand-pound gasoline-driven automobile a mile as it does an electric one. The only question again is what produces the power? To reiterate, it does not come from the battery; the battery is only the storage device, like a gas tank in a car. > > There are two orders of batteries, rechargeable, and single-use. The most common single-use batteries are A, AA, AAA, C, D. 9V, and lantern types. Those dry-cell species use zinc, manganese, lithium, silver oxide, or zinc and carbon to store electricity chemically. Please note they all contain toxic, heavy metals. > > Rechargeable batteries only differ in their internal materials, usually lithium-ion, nickel-metal oxide, and nickel-cadmium. The United States uses three billion of these two battery types a year, and most are not recycled; they end up in landfills. California is the only state which requires all batteries be recycled. If you throw your small, used batteries in the trash, here is what happens to them. > > All batteries are self-discharging. That means even when not in use, they leak tiny amounts of energy. You have likely ruined a flashlight or two from an old, ruptured battery. When a battery runs down and can no longer power a toy or light, you think of it as dead; well, it is not. It continues to leak small amounts of electricity. As the chemicals inside it run out, pressure builds inside the battery's metal casing, and eventually, it cracks. The metals left inside then ooze out. The ooze in your ruined flashlight is toxic, and so is the ooze that will inevitably leak from every battery in a landfill. All batteries eventually rupture; it just takes rechargeable batteries longer to end up in the landfill. > > In addition to dry cell batteries, there are also wet cell ones used in automobiles, boats, and motorcycles. The good thing about those is, ninety percent of them are recycled. Unfortunately, we do not yet know how to recycle single-use ones properly. > > But that is not half of it. For those of you excited about electric cars and a green revolution, I want you to take a closer look at batteries and also windmills and solar panels. These three technologies share what we call environmentally destructive embedded costs." > > Everything manufactured has two costs associated with it, embedded costs and operating costs. I will explain embedded costs using a can of baked beans as my subject. > > In this scenario, baked beans are on sale, so you jump in your car and head for the grocery store. Sure enough, there they are on the shelf for $1.75 a can. As you head to the checkout, you begin to think about the embedded costs in the can of beans. > > The first cost is the diesel fuel the farmer used to plow the field, till the ground, harvest the beans, and transport them to the food processor. Not only is his diesel fuel an embedded cost, so are the costs to build the tractors, combines, and trucks. In addition, the farmer might use a nitrogen fertilizer made from natural gas. > > Next is the energy costs of cooking the beans, heating the building, transporting the workers, and paying for the vast amounts of electricity used to run the plant. The steel can holding the beans is also an embedded cost. Making the steel can requires mining taconite, shipping it by boat, extracting the iron, placing it in a coal-fired blast furnace, and adding carbon. Then it's back on another truck to take the beans to the grocery store. Finally, add in the cost of the gasoline for your car. > > A typical EV battery weighs one thousand pounds, about the size of a travel trunk. It contains twenty-five pounds of lithium, sixty pounds of nickel, 44 pounds of manganese, 30 pounds cobalt, 200 pounds of copper, and 400 pounds of aluminum, steel, and plastic. Inside are over 6,000 individual lithium-ion cells. > > It should concern you that all those toxic components come from mining. For instance, to manufacture each EV auto battery, you must process 25,000 pounds of brine for the lithium, 30,000 pounds of ore for the cobalt, 5,000 pounds of ore for the nickel, and 25,000 pounds of ore for copper. All told, you dig up 500,000 pounds of the earth's crust for just - one - battery. Sixty-eight percent of the world's cobalt, a significant part of a battery, comes from the Congo. Their mines have no pollution controls, and they employ children who die from handling this toxic material. Should we factor in these diseased kids as part of the cost of driving an electric car?" > > I'd like to leave you with these thoughts. California is building the largest battery in the world near San Francisco, and they intend to power it from solar panels and windmills. They claim this is the ultimate in being 'green,' but it is not! This construction project is creating an environmental disaster. Let me tell you why. > > The main problem with solar arrays is the chemicals needed to process silicate into the silicon used in the panels. To make pure enough silicon requires processing it with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrogen fluoride, trichloroethane, and acetone. In addition, they also need gallium, arsenide, copper-indium-gallium- diselenide, and cadmium-telluride, which also are highly toxic. Silicon dust is a hazard to the workers, and the panels cannot be recycled. > > Windmills are the ultimate in embedded costs and environmental destruction. Each weighs 1688 tons (the equivalent of 23 houses) and contains 1300 tons of concrete, 295 tons of steel, 48 tons of iron, 24 tons of fiberglass, and the hard to extract rare earths neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium. Each blade weighs 81,000 pounds and will last 15 to 20 years, at which time it must be replaced. We cannot recycle used blades. Sadly, both solar arrays and windmills kill birds, bats, sea life, and migratory insects. > > There may be a place for these technologies, but you must look beyond the myth of zero emissions. I predict EVs and windmills will be abandoned once the embedded environmental costs of making and replacing them become apparent. "Going Green" may sound like the Utopian ideal and are easily espoused, catchy buzz words, but when you look at the hidden and embedded costs realistically with an open mind, you can see that Going Green is more destructive to the Earth's environment than meets the eye, for sure.

The problem I have with electric bikes is that there is no clutch. Ive been in situations where i lose control ans have the throttle wide open. I could simply pull the clutch in and regain control. also ive used the clutch to meter the power. Professionals for the most part wont have this issue but what happens when they do?
@willschofield1210
@willschofield1210 2 года назад
Should be very easy to add in, would just be a fader switch with somthing to provide resistance to feel like a clutch at the lever. Be highly tuneable.
@howleyboy3664
@howleyboy3664 2 года назад
Clutches are a relic of gas engines and ultimately reflect the inferiority of that platform. Clutches are necessary for shifting gears because gas engines have limited power curves. E bikes will be tunable and you will be able to dial in your throttle. You won’t need to feather your clutch because an electric motor has instant linear torque. Twist and go.... Furthermore, you wont need to garb a handful of clutch because you will have the back brake in its place. If you get into trouble, just grab the brake. That back brake could also be tuned to act as a clutch. Ultimately the performance and tunablilty of e bikes will kill gas bikes. In my opinion....

@fetB Год назад
@@howleyboy3664 true for general riding, but clutch slipping is (for ergonomic reasons aside from necessary) a practical thing in trial and enduro, but as Will said, very easy to emulate by making the clutch lever essenitally tell the motor controller to reduce torque/revs in whatever linearity or curve to rider preference.

I believe the throttle on the Stark is CanBus controlled. If so, a clutch should be an easy addition. A clutch is critical for logs and rocks. It can be simulated by turning the throttle off and then back on despite the throttle rate programmed in. Everyone doesn't have to love the Stark or any other electric bike. I do believe, 100%, when you ride one, you will understand the hype you see on these channels. Its performance is unfathomable. When solid state batteries hit...and enduro riders can go hit the woods for 4 to 6 hrs, gas bikes will be the last thing on their minds. It simply will not matter. The ride matters....and to ride a Stark Varg is stupid good.....way beyond my expectations...and I was warned. People are literally scared to admit how good it is.....because they believe they have to be wrong. It doesn't seem possible. The development team did an outstanding job.

Everyone is saying electric is the future, why ? I think the reason Alta failed is because the majority of the consumers don’t agree . A lot of people still enjoy the raw aspects of a gas bike . Sure the technology is there but is it needed yet ? Honestly I don’t think it is having an electric bike is still somewhat a gimmick to own it doesn’t far out way a gas bike there’s no real positive to owning one . Yeah ok gas prices are increasing of late this may be a reason but until a month ago that wasn’t the case . It’s not like they’re any better if anything the charge times and unavailable power sources in remote areas is still a major issue . Cool little tech bike but still not essential yet

Yup. I have both an Alta and gas bikes. Frankly the altar is the best bike I've ever ridden and I'm super fast on it for all the reasons mentioned in these comments. But usually you always find me on the gas bikes because the electric bikes just don't have the range and juice for me to ride the way I like to ride for more than a half hour and to me that's unacceptable.

SX & MX will be ruined if a electric bike occurs. As part of the viewing package the sound of the boxes and action is a major part. It's only taken 120+ years to maybe compete with a ICE. Let's not get too carried away with predictions
