@Rocky, I have seen how you explain the reason why after Flip's passing you're not emotionally ready for another dog. I totally understand that. My 17 year old cat passed away August 30th of this year. I'm not ready for another cat. I still have 2 cat's and 1 dog. I've tried for over 30 minutes now to ask you about how do you get someone to accept the fact that you're not ready for a new animal? I kept trying to go into details about it but couldn't get the right words. Help, please.

I think a lot of these reasons people give are lies. She might have nipped someone or they find out dogs are more work than they thought. People think it’s better if they have an excuse.

I stayed in an abusive relationship for too long, any moment is too long, because he would threaten to take away my dogs. Thank goodness I couldn't have children! Never stay for your pets, but I know how people feel when that's used. I cannot imagine a time when nobody wants the animals in a breakup.

Agree it’s awful. It’s the AKC (American Kennel Club) current breed standard. Breeders dock the tail within days of birth. Ear cropping is done later in puppyhood. Credit to this girl’s owners for leaving her ears intact. They probably didn’t have a say in the matter about the tail docking. Veterinarians and the public need to keep up the pressure on the AKC to change the Doberman breed standard to keeping ears and tails intact. Ears and tails are so important to canine communication. It’s baffling that anyone would want to take away our ability (and other dogs’ ability) to accurately “read” a dog’s body language. 😢

I agree. I have a doberman and I refused breeders that insisted on the ear operation. Unfortunately her tail is docked as the breeder picked puppies for owners based on personality and couldn't get all the potential owners to agree to tails. Sad times.

@@sapphy2530same here. My Doberman has full ears but a docked tail. He’s 7. Now the law has changed so the breeders have to leave them fully intact. A big win!

@@karenm3822 some breeds have a breed specific rescue organization that cares for that breed to place them in homes looking for just that breed.

For example, it can be a loose network of people familiar with a particular breed's needs and used to accommodating them, as well as screening thoroughly for a proper adoption. They also often foster along with same breeds or others, in like homes, for training and socialization. It's like staying with family or friends instead of hospital or jail! Tey can help transfer across country with volunteers for adoption travel, and there is a return policy if it doesn't fit. Finally, it provides a place to reduce deaths from puppy mill over breeding!

@@karenm3822a lot of shelters in the USA are unfortunately kill shelters…they put a time limit on many intakes, it’s heartbreaking. rescues won’t put down dogs or any animals. They find fosters for them and people can go to rescues, especially if they are looking for a certain breed. Rescues are also key for dogs that have been in shelters for long periods of time, many will scour the USA and specifically step in to save them

I was about to make the dumb comment. They are in to self gratification. They want a puppy. It's cute, fun. They don't put in the effort to socialize or train it. They get bored and then go on to the next thing that entertains them.

My husband and I would never give up our dogs in any situation. He was career military, we were being sent to an area where hurricanes are common. My husband traveled frequently and before we ever moved we had a plan if I had to relocate due to weather with our golden retrievers. Worst case scenario I'd load my suv with pet food & meds and drive as far away as possible. I'd sleep in the suv with my dogs for a few days if need be. Luckily we never were in that situation.
