Did you ever ask yourself why every culture on earth steers men into professions that are demanding and dangerous? Did you know that men do the majority of the industrial,agricultural and sanitation work that keeps society going,and have done so since antiquity. Did you know that men make up the majority of work place deaths, around 90%. There are some cultures with social elements that could be describe as matriarchal for example the Iroquois,Trobriand Islanders and the Mousu China. And in those cultural the basic pattern of men do task away from the home especially the more dangerous and demanding ones, while the women work near the home. To be a man is to be treated as an expandable tool.

The long hours in labor, the immense pressure on organs, and the ripping of the vaginal canal and perineum not only guarantee an infection but also make hemorrhaging and serious permanent injury (like loss of bladder and bowel control from tearing) common. Pre-antibiotics, the death due to complications in childbirth was quite high. Given that it was almost guaranteed that women had to get married and have children, the job of childbirth had near "full employment." If we're going to restrict ourselves to labor paid with dollars, women have a long history of involvement in labor rights primarily because a number of female-dominated professions were incredibly dangerous as well---like textiles, milling, and agriculture in general. Women weren't given these jobs because they were safer (in fact they were often made unnecessarily more dangerous by working conditions to reduce costs); they were given these jobs because women were cheaper labor than men and these jobs could handle higher turnover in case, you know, a worker died in childbirth. Perhaps the most dangerous job ever was mining--something women generally worked except in the cases when they were banned from the profession (some of these bans had ulterior motives, like the 1842 Mining Act in the UK, which had more to do with religious and social control than Victorian sensibilities---Alan Heeson's paper from 1981 explains this in detail). And let's not restrict ourselves to legal professions since sex work and sex trafficking is probably one of the most dangerous (and unnecessary) jobs occupied mostly by women. This is especially true in war as women are often treated as spoils to be traded as slaves. If you're arguing that men (in addition to women) are screwed in this gendered society, I'm with you on that. No one really wins with the way things are. If, however, you're arguing that women are better off with the status quo and therefore shouldn't fight for a more equal society... well, I very much disagree and doubt any appeals with generic, "historical" statements are going to change my mind. In the west a common "defense" for harassment of abuse of women & children is "in other parts of the world, girls have no rights" ergo our lives are perfect in spite of the discrimination & injustices we face. IMHO the appropriate response is "we have it much better in the west, but still have much work to do. And what can we do for the women & children with even fewer rights & protections???"
